I think you hit the nail on the head. Witten and Gonzalez.

Probably Tony Gonzalez. For old timers I always liked Dave Casper. He was Gronk before there was a Gronk.

Mackey, Winslow, Witten, Tony G, Ditka. It's tough. Sharpe was great. Gronk could end up the greatest. It depends how you look at it. Generation, blocking, catching, numbers, etc. It's not clear cut at all.

Can't believe no one at least gave a shout out to Ozzie Newsome in the thread. Newsome and Winslow in the early-to-mid 80s really paved the way for the Tony G's, Sharp's, Gates and Gronk's, the real receiving tight ends of the past 15-20 years.

Good call. Tough to decide. You have guys like Smith, Smith, Sanders too. I think it's Tony G. He did it all. I haven't seen enough of the old guys besides clips, and stats to know.

Hardest to cover was Sharpe. What an awesome mix of speed, power and route running. My Favorite was Dave Casper (Stone Cold Raider fan)

Tony Gonzalez. #2 of ALL-TIME in receptions, #5 in receiving yards

Gates is a strong candidate. Poll this one. Tough question, depends on your era. Blocking used to take up a TE's receptions when football was played like men.

Actually Richard Caster of the Jets pre-dated all of them as probably the first mainly pass catching tight end. He just was not as successful long term as Winslow and Newsome.

Jerry Smith was 1965-77 and retired as the all time touchdown leader for tight ends with 60.

He is still 4th all time 40 years later behind Gonzalez with 111, Gates with 94 and Sharpe with 62.

I remember the Dolphins players making fun of him for not being able to walk off the field on his own. They were right.

He played an amazing game, but the guy was a little dramatic at times.
