NFL Player News - Week of 8/1/16

HOU - WR DeAndre Hopkins returning Source: ESPN.com - Tania Ganguli

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins will end his holdout and return to the Texans Sunday, July 31, the first day of training camp. Hopkins expressed his disappointment in Houston's lack of contract negotiations, but he also stated his desire to help the Texans win a Super Bowl.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

As expected, this won't affect Hopkins' ADP. He is criminally underpaid, but such is the life of NFL players until they are no longer playing under their rookie contracts.

PIT - WR Sammie Coates wows in practice

Source: Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - Mark Kaboly

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Sammie Coates made several spectacular catches in practice Saturday, July 30, including a 40-yard touchdown and a one-handed grab.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Coates is trying to win the outside receiver spot opposite Antonio Brown. He has a high ceiling if he can win the role as a deep ball and potential red zone specialist in the hole left by Martavis Bryant. This is as good a start as you could have hoped if you're targeting Coates in the second half of your draft.

MIA - RB Arian Foster activated from PUP list

    Source: NationalFootballPost.com - Aaron Wilson

Miami Dolphins RB Arian Foster (Achilles') was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list Sunday, July 31.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a good development if you are targeting Foster. It shows that he is recovered from his achilles tear. If he can stay healthy through training camp, he could get the majority of the work in the backfield. Look for his ADP to rise and possibly surpass Jay Ajayi.

DAL - WR Dez Bryant sloppy in first practice

Source: Fort Worth Star-Telegram - Drew Davison

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant dropped multiple passes in individual drills during his first practice Saturday, July 30.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Nothing to worry about yet, and Bryant being on the field is a good sign that his foot issue is not a problem heading into camp. Still, Bryant did not look like himself last year, and he himself has said the problem was partly mental. Seeing Bryant make a vintage Bryant play in the preseason would go a long way towards giving us a sense of security when we take him in the first round.

BUF - WR Sammy Watkins passes conditioning test

    Source: NFL.com - Marc Sessler

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot) has passed the mandatory conditioning tests but remains on the Physically Unable to Perform list as a precautionary measure. However, he has been running for several weeks.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Watkins should be ready for Week 1 on his current schedule, but the more important immediate issue is Watkins getting through reconditioning without any soft tissue injuries. He's still worth a third-round pick as long as he's ready for Week 1 at Baltimore.

DEN - RB Ronnie Hillman tweaks back

Source: The Associated Press - Arnie Stapleton

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman (back) left practice and jogged to the locker room Sunday, July 31, after taking a hard hit to his back.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hillman is fighting just to stay on the roster at this point. Kapri Bibbs could push him for that spot and Hillman can't make the club in the tub.

SD - Stevie Johnson injures knee

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken

San Diego Chargers WR Stevie Johnson (knee) was carried off the practice field Sunday, July 31, after injuring his right knee during a passing drill.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Tyrell Williams, a great athlete (4.43 40, 39.5" vertical, 6.74 3 cone) with size (6'3" 204 at his Western Oregon pro day) could be the next man up if Johnson's injury is serious. Deep dynasty leaguers should keep an eye on Williams, who scored an 80-yard touchdown against the Broncos in Week 17 last year.

BAL - Slow transition for Keenan Reynolds

Source: The Baltimore Sun - Don Markus

Baltimore Ravens WR Keenan Reynolds said he is not where he wants to be as he transitions from playing quarterback in college to receiver in the NFL. He said he is trying to learn from the veteran receivers, and special teams coordinator Jerry Rosburg said Reynolds will be given opportunities to show what he can do as a returner.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Reynolds had a great offseason and the Ravens injuries at wide receiver could open up a roster spot at the beginning of the season if Breshad Perriman or Steve Smith are not ready to go for Week 1. Reynolds' ability to contribute as a returner and core special teams player could help his cause.

GB - WR Jared Abbrederis making plays in camp

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Ryan Wood and Tom Silverstein

Green Bay Packers WR Jared Abbrederis has impressed in camp while WR Davante Adams and WR Jeff Janis have been quiet in the early going.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Abbrederis should be Aaron Rodgers' choice to win snaps at the third wide receiver position because of his precise route-running and timing. The Wisconsin product has to stay healthy to fulfill those wishes, but if he can, he'll be on our early season waiver wire watch list.

SEA - RB Christine Michael emerging as leader

Source: 710 ESPN Seattle - Liz Mathews

Seattle Seahawks RB Christine Michael is 'kind of the leader in the (running back) group now', according to offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, who added the third-year veteran has 'always been explosive, but he's come a long way (maturity-wise)'.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Michael has impressed in a vacuum before, and to be clear he's still not assured of a roster spot with three draft picks and Thomas Rawls at the position. If Rawls isn't ready to take his full workload to start the season, Michael is the best candidate to help lighten his load.

HOU - DE J.J. Watt uncertain about return date

    Source: NFL.com - Marc Sessler

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (back) acknowledged Sunday, July 31, he isn't certain when he'll return from back surgery.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Watt's back surgery is the kind of procedure that tends to take on the long side of the recovery timeline, although Watt played extremely well through a plethora of injuries last year. He's still a good candidate to be the first IDP off of the board, but a lot later than he would be going if he was completely healthy.

HOU - WR Jaelen Strong in great condition

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans WR Jaelen Strong showed up to training camp in 'optimal condition,' according to the Houston Chronicle's Aaron Wilson. He has lost a lot of weight since last year and looks quicker.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Strong should be considered the Week 1 favorite to start opposite DeAndre Hopkins. He's on the borderline of draftable as first-round pick Will Fuller surely will steal snaps and threaten Strong's spot on the depth chart if he doesn't continue to play at a very high level.

IND - WR Donte Moncrief almost at full health

Source: The Herald Bulletin - George Bremer

Indianapolis Colts WR Donte Moncrief (toe) said his surgically repaired toe is 96% to 97% healthy.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Moncrief's draft stock shouldn't be affected by this issue unless it slows him in the preseason. We'll watch to make sure Moncrief looks like his old self. He could easily outperform his ADP as long as Andrew Luck returns to form.

NYG - Odell Beckham suffers minor injury

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. (foot) was cleated, has a cut or two and will be sore for a couple of days, according to head coach Ben McAdoo.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

So far, so good with the injury scares to wide receivers at the top of our board. If Julio Jones' potential foot issue lingers, Beckham could become a top two wide receiver.

PHI - RB Ryan Mathews timeline update

Source: The Philadelphia Inquirer - Jeff McLane

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) is not expected at practice until later this week, according to head coach Doug Pederson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If he does return later this week, it will be a best case scenario for his ankle injury. It's possible Mathews has an uneventful camp and starts the season as the lead back, with a chance to return value on his fifth-round ADP. His injury history suggests that this will be just the beginning of a string of maladies this year that keeps him from hitting his ceiling. We'll watching this closely, with newly extended Darren Sproles likely playing a large role again too.

CAR - RB Cameron Artis-Payne impressing
Source: The Associated Press - Steve Reed

Carolina Panthers RB Cameron Artis-Payne's speed has been impressive early in training camp.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Artis-Payne is trying to hold off Brandon Wegher to back up Jonathan Stewart, a role that could see multiple starts if Stewart's injury history is any indicator. Artis-Payne wasn't overly impressive in his late season opportunity last year, but he still managed two double-digit PPR point games in the three weeks Stewart missed (Weeks 15-17).

OAK - TE Clive Walford not being restricted

    Source: ESPN.com - Paul Gutierrez

Oakland Raiders TE Clive Walford (knee) has been a full participant in training camp following an offseason all-terrain vehicle accident.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Walford isn't a TE1 for fantasy yet, but he had some plays showing surprising downfield speed last year, and with a strong wide receiver group, he could face some of the better matchups each week in the middle of the field. He's worth a late pick if you wait at tight end, and he is certainly on our breakout TE candidate list.

MIA - RB Kenyan Drake running with second offense

    Source: Sun-Sentinel - Omar Kelly

Miami Dolphins RB Kenyan Drake ran with the second-team offense Sunday, July 31. He did not appear to have a firm grasp of the offense, in the opinion of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel's Omar Kelly.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Drake was a very raw runner at Alabama, but he has great size and speed. The Dolphins could make use of Drake on plays designed to get him the ball in space, but he is unlikely to play a large role in the backfield unless multiple injuries strike on the depth chart ahead of him.

MIA - Isaiah Pead working with first-team offense

    Source: Sun-Sentinel - Omar Kelly

Miami Dolphins RB Isaiah Pead received plenty of repetitions with the first-team offense Sunday, July 31.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pead was a bust of a second-round pick for the Rams, at least in part because his rookie year sapped his love of football. Damien Williams' conditioning issue has given Pead an opening to make the team as the #4 running back.

LA - WR Tavon Austin carted off

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Lorenzo Reyes
Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (leg) was carted off the practice field with an apparent leg injury Sunday, July 31.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Jeff Fisher updated the media and clarified that the problem was cramps and that Austin didn't eat lunch, so this shouldn't be anything to worry about going forward.

Why not? He actually looked good when he made on to the field for Houston last year. A healthy Foster (I know that is a rarity) is the best RB on the Miami roster right now.

    Tuesday Update

BUF - RB Reggie Bush joining Buffalo Source: The Associated Press - John Wawrow
Free-agent RB Reggie Bush (49ers) agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills Monday, Aug. 1, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
At 31-years old, Bush is expected to compete with veteran Mike Gillislee and rookie Jonathan Williams for a backup role behind LeSean McCoy in training camp. Even if he's not the true backup behind McCoy, Bush could give them a change-of-pace look if needed.

NO - WR Michael Thomas making good impression

Source: The New Orleans Times-Picayune - Larry Holder

New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas has made one-handed catches in training camp Friday, July 29, and Saturday, July 30, and he has been better than advertised, according to beat writer Larry Holder.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With Anquan Boldin signing in Detroit, the main threat to Thomas's fantasy value in his rookie year has passed. He was already developing great trust with Drew Brees in the spring, now he is generating buzz with downfield plays. He could easily be Marques Colston plus, and Colston had over 1000 yards and eight scores as a seventh-round rookie.

SD - Stevie Johnson to receive second option

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Updating a previous report, San Diego Chargers WR Stevie Johnson (knee) will receive a second option on his torn meniscus before he undergoes surgery.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Johnson's timetable will be known after the surgery. He's not going to be ready for the start of the regular season, and we'll have to see what the second opinion says about surgery. After that, we'll know about his recovery time.

PHI - TE Zach Ertz to be featured in red zone

    Source: PhillyMag.com - Josh Paunil

Philadelphia Eagles TE Zach Ertz will be featured in the red zone, according to head coach Doug Pederson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ertz has not been a prolific touchdown scorer earlier in his career, and not because the Eagles had a clear dominant red zone option. This could be the Eagles' intention, but it's not a reason to move Ertz up the board because he hasn't shown the skillset yet to convert more opportunities into scores. Ertz is a low TE1 on default target volume, but if he hits this year, it will be on reception numbers spiking, not touchdowns.

GB - WR Davante Adams struggling

Source: Green Bay Press-Gazette - Ryan Wood

Green Bay Packers WR Davante Adams dropped passes in the two-minute drill and in the end zone during practice Sunday, July 31.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Adams is losing his grip on the #3 spot, if he ever had it going into this offseason. Jared Abbrederis has had the most positive open to camp, but Ty Montgomery is still on the PUP. The most likely outcome here is that the #3 wide receiver spot in Green Bay doesn't provide consistent fantasy value. It could help the case of Richard Rodgers or Jared Cook if one of them can dominate tight end targets.

BUF - RB LeSean McCoy making good impression

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy impressed the coaching staff with how hard he worked during the offseason, and they expect him to have a very productive season in 2016.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We could see McCoy getting a larger workload and producing like a low-end RB1 for fantasy owners this year. The Bills are going to be a run-heavy offense, and they'll use Mccoy as much as they possibly can. He has a current ADP of RB11 (3.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

NO - TE Coby Fleener building chemistry with QB

Source: The New Orleans Times-Picayune - Larry Holder

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener said he has been working on building a chemistry with QB Drew Brees during the early part of training camp. Brees said he believes Fleener could catch a lot of passes in 2016 because he will have favorable matchups.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Message! Fantasy owners are going to want Fleener at the right value this year. The Saints TE position has been one of the most productive each season. Whether it's Jimmy Graham or Ben Watson, TE1 value is certainly there. His current ADP is TE6 (7.01) in 12-team PPR leagues.

NYJ - RB Matt Forte being cautious with hamstring

Source: New York Daily News - Seth Walder

New York Jets RB Matt Forte (hamstring) has missed the first four practices of training camp after tweaking his hamstring while running on his own, and he is being cautious with the injury to avoid a setback. As a veteran of nine seasons, there is not a lot of urgency to get Forte on the field.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

As long as Forte shows he is healthy within a week or two, it shouldn't affect his draft stock. If this turns into a a 3-4 week injury, it indicates a more serious hamstring strain and one that throws his ability to avoid another hamstring issue in-season into question. Move Bilal Powell up your board a bit either way.

MIA - RB Jay Ajayi out of practice Monday

Source: Palm Beach Post - Hal Habib

Miami Dolphins RB Jay Ajayi (knee) is out of practice Monday, Aug. 1. It's not known if it's a day-to-day thing or in any way symptomatic of the knee injury that caused his draft stock to fall a year ago. Ajayi has maintained that his knee is a 'non-issue,' according to his doctors. Some have speculated his knee is bone-on-bone, which could shorten his career.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This issue is a bone bruise in the left knee, and it's not on the right knee that allegedly had a bone-on-bone condition, Ajayi has said that he will return in a few days, but every practice is important as he battles for starter snaps with Arian Foster.

TB - WR Kenny Bell part of tight competition

    Source: PewterReport.com - Zach Shapiro

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Kenny Bell looked like an 'MVP' during practice Friday, July 29, according to head coach Dirk Koetter, but Koetter said Sunday, July 31, the competition in the receiver group remains close.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It sounds like Adam Humphries will be the #3 and slot receiver, but Bell could still situate himself as the top backup outside with a good summer. Bell is still a good dynasty stash and has a higher career ceiling than Humphries.

DEN - RB Ronnie Hillman sits out Monday

Source: The Denver Post - Malika Andrews

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman (back) did not participate in practice Monday, Aug. 1.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hillman took a big shot from LB Zaire Anderson on Sunday, and he had a bruised back. Rookie Devontae Booker may have a chance to overtake Hillman for the backup job behind starter C.J. Anderson.

CHI - TE Zach Miller has concussion

    Source: ESPNChicago.com - Jeff Dickerson

Chicago Bears TE Zach Miller (concussion) has been diagnosed with a concussion, according to head coach John Fox.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bears tight end group is scary thin after they failed to land Jermaine Gresham and Josh Hill in free agency despite strong offers. Miller finally emerged from a long history of injuries to produce last year, but this is not the start he was looking for. Miller was released from the Bucs after a 2013 concussion, so we'll watch Miller's return timeline closely.

BAL - WR Mike Wallace works with starters

Source: The Baltimore Sun - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens WR Mike Wallace worked with the first-team offense in practice Sunday, July 31. Injuries to WRs Steve Smith Sr. (Achilles') and Breshad Perriman (knee) helped facilitate Wallace going with the starters.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wallace's failed conditioning test appears to be a blip. He and fellow free agent pickup Ben Watson could be strong producers early in the season as the Ravens offense gets healthier.

    18. NYG - DE Jason Pierre-Paul impressing

Source: New York Daily News - Pat Leonard

New York Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul has impressed as being 'big and fast and explosive,' according to general manager Jerry Reese. Head coach Ben McAdoo said he has to tone down Pierre-Paul because he is 'going so hard out there,' according to Reese. The Giants general manager added, 'He looks like the old JPP.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pierre-Paul won't play with a club on the hand injured by fireworks last summer, which is a good sign. He still won't have the function he had before the accident, but he should be improved from last year and ready to be a fantasy DE1 again in IDP leagues.

MIA - Isaiah Pead nicked up

    Source: ESPN.com - James Walker

Miami Dolphins RB Isaiah Pead (undisclosed) left practice Monday, Aug. 1, and he's being evaluated by trainers.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pead had just been thrust into first-team snaps while Jay Ajayi sat with a bone bruise on his left knee. The comeback attempt could come to a halt if this is a multi-week injury. Another comeback story, Daniel Thomas, could get more runs if Pead has to miss time. The backup going into the season, Damien Williams, should be activated from the PUP soon and could establish his claim to stick as a fourth back.

BUF - Optimism in QB Tyrod Taylor talks

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor continues to negotiate on a contract extension, and there's plenty of optimism that a deal is struck before the season opens.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a bit of a turn in the tone around these negotiations. Perhaps Taylor is willing to take a deal in the Andy Dalton/Colin Kaepernick mold, which would pay him around 15 million a year, but basically in the form of team options every season. Taylor is playing for two million dollars plus a one million dollar incentive bonus, which is backup money. He could increase his pay this year greatly, but he would also lose the chance to lock in an even bigger deal if he excels this year.

SEA - RB C.J. Prosise to miss time

Source: 710 ESPN Seattle - Liz Mathews

Seattle Seahawks RB C.J. Prosise (hamstring) is expected to be sidelined for seven to 10 days because of a first-degree hamstring strain.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bad news for the rookie here. Prosise is competing for a spot on the depth chart behind starter Thomas Rawls. There's even a chance he earns a larger role if he stays healthy and impresses in camp. A converted WR from Notre Dame, Prosise has one year under his belt playing RB. With him out for a week or so (and Rawls on active/PUP due to an ankle injury), Christine Michael and Alex Collins will get more playing time.

Arizona Cardinals WR John Brown (concussion) will not participate in practice Monday, Aug. 1, because he is taking part in the concussion protocol.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's going to take some time for Brown to get through the protocol. In the meantime, J.J. Nelson and Jaron Brown get an opportunity to show more as the team's no.3 WR.

Chicago Bears WR Eddie Royal (concussion) has been diagnosed with a concussion, according to head coach John Fox.

Royal will have to go through the league's protocol before returning. That means we may not see him for a couple of weeks.

NE - RB James Develin healthy

Source: Boston Herald - Stephen Hewitt

New England Patriots FB James Develin (leg) is fully recovered from a broken right leg that cost him the entire 2015 season. He's ready to return to form; without him in 2015, the Patriots' rushing game posted its worst totals since Develin joined the team in 2012.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
This should be a boost to LeGarrette Blount, especially in the first four games that Tom Brady will miss, that is assuming Blount makes the roster.

SD - DE Joey Bosa talks quiet

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Mike Florio

San Diego Chargers DE Joey Bosa haven't negotiated since Thursday, July 28, when the Chargers made their latest offer, according to sources. The main sticking points are the team wants offset language and deferral of a significant portion of his signing bonus into 2017. Bosa's representatives would accept one or the other: offset language or full payment of the signing bonus in 2016.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This was supposed to be a thing of the past under the new CBA, and the Chargers need Bosa to boost their defense. It's hard to understand why the Chargers wouldn't give the #3 pick everything he wanted, since the overall compensation is set.

CLE - TE Gary Barnidge on track for Week 1

    Source: ESPN.com - Pat McManamon

Updating an ongoing story, Cleveland Browns TE Gary Barnidge (hernia) is on track to play in Week 1 at the Philadelphia Eagles, according to Browns tight ends coach Greg Seamon. Barnidge's work ethic was praised by Seamon, who noted Cleveland has a plan to get the tight end ready for opening day.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll see how Barnidge meshes with likely starting QB Robert Griffin III. If they establish strong chemistry, we could see Barnidge working out as a low-end TE1 in 2016. Currently, Barnidge is coming off the board at TE9 (9.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

MIA - RB Arian Foster works with top unit

Source: The Miami Herald - Barry Jackson

Miami Dolphins RB Arian Foster worked with the first unit again in practice Monday, Aug. 1, with RB Jay Ajayi (knee) sidelined. Head coach Adam Gase said '(Foster) is going to be working with the ones the whole training camp. His resume speaks for itself. I don't think there's any question why we brought him in here. He's playing this year. Whether he's the guy that will be the first snap of the game, time will tell. He is going to be rolling with the ones.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Foster should begin the season as the more valuable back in PPR leagues, and maybe in all formats. Recent history shows to bet the under on his games played, and expect that Ajayi will be the more valuable back by year's end.

MIA - RB Jay Ajayi still not practicing

Source: The Miami Herald - Adam H. Beasley

Miami Dolphins RB Jay Ajayi (knee) did not practice again Tuesday, Aug. 2.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ajayi was in line to be the Dolphins starter this year (at least to begin the season) with Lamar Miller moving on to the Texans in free agency. His knee is considered day-to-day and could open the door for Arian Foster to take over as the starter. Currently in camp, Isaiah Pead is splitting time with Foster on the first-team offense.

SD - San Diego adds WR James Jones

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Free-agent WR James Jones (Packers) is signing an undisclosed deal with the San Diego Chargers Tuesday, Aug. 2, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Chargers had to do something with Stevie Johnson undergoing knee surgery in the near future. Jones has a strong game near the red zone, and that could be how the Chargers envision using him. Keenan Allen should be a WR2 for fantasy owners in 2016, and we like Tyrell Williams as a dynasty sleeper at the position. The addition of Jones will prevent the offense from having any early hiccups with the loss of Johnson, but we don't see a ton of fantasy value from the veteran with his new team.

NYJ - RB Matt Forte returns to practice

Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta

New York Jets RB Matt Forte (hamstring) returned to practice Tuesday, Aug. 2. He missed the first four practices of training camp with a hamstring ailment.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Forte is going to share the workload with the Jets this year. However, he should still provide enough fantasy punch to perform like a RB2 with RB1 upside. His current ADP is RB13 (3.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Updating previous reports, New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (pectoral) had a pectoral injury this offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Patriots are never the most forthcoming about injuries. As long there's no sign of this lingering or affecting his play, we can still draft Gronk as an elite fantasy commodity worthy of a top 15-18 pick.

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (back) has been experiencing back stiffness, according to quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Romo's back has been a problem for a while, but as long as he doesn't have to play on a short week and miss his shot to make the problem manageable. This is also another reason the team is likely to lean heavily on Ezekiel Elliott and the running game.

CIN - TE Tyler Kroft hurts knee

Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Kroft (knee) was carted off the practice field Tuesday, Aug. 2, with a knee injury. Kroft was holding his knee while talking with trainers before leaving the field. Head coach Marvin Lewis did not provide an update.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Keep an eye on this situation as Kroft was expected to be the lead TE for the Bengals while Tyler Eifert (ankle) misses time. Getting the cart out is never a good sign, but we'll wait for more information before hitting the panic button.

PIT - WR Sammie Coates making strides

Source: Yahoo! Sports - Charles Robinson

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Sammie Coates earned praise from Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley, Tuesday, Aug. 2, being called a 'night and day' player from a year ago to now.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Coates has fantastic natural talent, and he could be in line to win the no.3 job on the Steelers roster with Martavis Bryant suspended for the year. While he can get open deep, Coates has a difficult time hauling in passes consistently. We know he has intriguing upside, but Coates needs better concentration to ever play up to his potential as a pro.

ATL - Atlanta to sign OLB Dwight Freeney

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Free-agent LB Dwight Freeney (Cardinals) is scheduled to fly to Atlanta Thursday, Aug. 4, to sign a one-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Falcons have been looking for help on defense, and Freeney proved last year that he still has some ability left in the tank. In a limited role for the Cardinals in 2015, Freeney played 245 snaps in 11 games and finished with 8.0 sacks and three forced fumbles. The Falcons should use him in a similar role, and snaring 5-7 sacks isn't out of the question.

BAL - RB Trent Richardson waived

    Source: BaltimoreRavens.com

Baltimore Ravens RB Trent Richardson was waived Tuesday, Aug. 2. Free-agent WR Chuck Jacobs was subsequently signed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We can't see Richardson landing with another team. When he wasn't overweight, he wasn't trying...or he was hurt. Richardson's pro career seemed on track after a near 1,000-yard rushing season with the Browns as a rookie in 2012. Then he was traded to the Colts, and it's been all downhill since then. His time in the NFL is likely over, and Richardson will go down as one of the biggest draft busts at the RB position in NFL history.

ARI - S Tyrann Mathieu agrees to extension

Arizona Cardinals FS Tyrann Mathieu agreed to a five-year, $62.5 million contract extension that includes $40 million guaranteed, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's quite the number for a player who has seemingly battled injuries from day one in the NFL. With two ACL injuries over the last three years, Mathieu has yet to play a full 16-game schedule in the regular season. When healthy, we're talking about one of the most disruptive playmakers in the game today. Mathieu (knee) may not be ready for the start of the regular season, but reports indicate he could be cleared to practice in three weeks or so.

NYG - RB Rashad Jennings the lead back

Source: New York Daily News - Ralph Vacchiano

New York Giants RB Rashad Jennings is the No. 1 running back this year, according to running backs coach Craig Johnson. Johnson dispelled any notion that the Giants would implement a four-running back committee again this season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
That's good news for fantasy players, and Jennings current ADP (RB37) may rise a bit with this report. Jennings can do it all as a runner or receiver out of the backfield. His fantasy stock is cool because of his injury history and because the Giants could use Shane Vereen and/or rookie Paul Perkins as a change-of-pace back. If healthy, Jennings could easily perform like a low-end RB2.

BAL - RB Terrance West explosive
Source: The Baltimore Sun - Jeff Zrebiec

Baltimore Ravens RB Terrance West has been the team's most explosive player thus far in camp, according to beat writer Jeff Zrebiec. West is finding holes and breaking long runs in camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

West isn't much of a pass catcher, so in Marc Trestman's offense, he would be a committee back at best, but this is still something to watch to see if he can threaten Justin Forsett's workload. If West keeps it up, Kenneth Dixon and/or Javorius Allen would be looking at an RBBC if Forsett goes down, making the Balitmore backup running back situation difficult to decipher.

DEN - QB Mark Sanchez has erratic day

    Source: DenverBroncos.com - Andrew Mason

Denver Broncos QB Mark Sanchez had an up-and-down day in practice Monday, Aug. 1. He completed six consecutive passes working with the first unit in seven-on-seven drills, but he also misfired on four straight during the session and he was picked off in the red zone. 'Mark threw a pick in the red zone; we can't do that,' head coach Gary Kubiak said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sanchez is doing nothing to instill confidence during camp. This team won a Super Bowl with one foot in the grave Peyton Manning, but Sanchez doesn't command the respect and leadership Manning did. This quarterback situation is far from settled.

CIN - WR Tyler Boyd making big strides

    Source: SiriusXM NFL Radio

Cincinnati Bengals WR Tyler Boyd has improved dramatically from spring practices to training camp, according to his quarterback. 'He's taken a huge jump from OTAs to camp, he's made some tough catches and has been impressive,' QB Andy Dalton said Monday, Aug. 1.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Boyd should play in the slot for the Bengals and he could get a lot of targets early while Tyler Eifert is out, but he's not going to be a big play or red zone factor. He might make an impact on the level of Jamison Crowder's in Washington in 2015.

    Thursday Update

DAL - RB Ezekiel Elliott should return soon Source: ESPN - Ed Werder

Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott (hamstring) is expected to be sidelined for about a week because of his hamstring injury, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Elliott is going to be the centerpiece of the Cowboys offense, so the team is wisely approaching this--what appears to be mild--injury. We may not see the rookie RB until the second week of the preseason with the timetable for return. However, we should see plenty of him before the start of the regular season so long as the injury isn't aggravated.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
It's time to start wondering if Seferian-Jenkins is trade bait, as he appears to still be in Dirk Koetter's doghouse. Brate should be on your radar as a late-round sleeper tight end.

NFL - QB Nick Foles expected to decide soon

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Free-agent QB Nick Foles (Rams) is considering a few options and is expected to make a decision by Wednesday, Aug. 3, or Thursday, Aug. 4, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There are reportedly a few teams interested in the veteran back. Foles may want to compete for a starting job, but perhaps a reserve spot behind Tony Romo with the Cowboys would suit his fancy. We'll know soon enough.

DAL - QB Josh McCown may be option for Cowboys

    Source: ESPN - Ed Werder

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown may be a trade target for the Dallas Cowboys since they are looking for a backup quarterback, in the opinion of ESPN's Ed Werder.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McCown should also be a trade target for the Broncos with their Super Bowl window and no one separating in the early quarterback battle, but that is unlikely. The Browns might want to keep McCown because he has been having a great effect on Robert Griffin III in his comeback bid.

ATL - RB Tevin Coleman out with foot injury

Source: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - D. Orlando Ledbetter

Updating a previous report, Atlanta Falcons RB Tevin Coleman (foot) rolled his foot Tuesday, Aug. 2, but is doing fine and should return to practice in a 'limited fashion' Thursday, Aug. 4, or Friday, Aug. 5, according to head coach Dan Quinn.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

As long as Coleman returns when expected, this shouldn't be an issue. He wasn't able to stay healthy for long last year, so hopefully this is only time we see him on the injury report this summer. He has been having a great camp by most accounts, including big improvements as a receiver.

WAS - WR Josh Doctson in a boot

    Source: CSNWashington.com - Rich Tandler

Washington Redskins WR Josh Doctson (Achilles') is wearing a boot Wednesday, Aug. 3, but he hasn't suffered a setback. According to the team, it's just a rest day.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Doctson's early impact is going to be muted by his extended absence, and it is fair to ask if he'll have enough impact to matter in fantasy leagues to make him draftable in typical leagues. His talent is enticing and he's in a good passing game, but it's hard to advocate spending a pick on Doctson unless we see him in pads.

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (knee) is coming along slowly in his return from a serious knee injury. He caught his first pass of the summer in 11-on-11 drills Tuesday, Aug. 2. He is slowly making progress.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cruz is highly unlikely to ever be the player he was before his patellar tendon tear, but he is on track to make the team as long as he doesn't have a setback.

NYG - WR Sterling Shepard stands out

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Jordan Raanan

New York Giants WR Sterling Shepard stood out in practice Tuesday, Aug. 2, working with the first-team offense. He did well on offense, but didn't fare so well in the kickoff return drill. 'I didn't like his kickoff return drill,' head coach Ben McAdoo said. 'As a receiver, I think that he played strong (Tuesday).'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The stories on Shepard have been unanimously positive from the moment he was drafted by the Giants. He's worth a pick in the 7th/8th round as an upside flex/bench wide receiver. The Giants haven't had a consistent #2 opposite Odell Beckham and the offense will remain pass-heavy, so Shepard's upside is unknown.

CLE - Robert Griffin III helped out by QB Josh McCown

Source: Akron Beacon Journal - Nate Ulrich

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III has improved by 'leaps and bounds' as a leader, partly due to veteran QB Josh McCown guiding him, head coach Hue Jackson said Tuesday, Aug. 2. 'A lot of him getting better has to do with Josh McCown,' Jackson said. 'Josh McCown has really done a great job of spending time with him and mentoring him … to try and make the biggest jump that he can. Our quarterback room is a special place right now.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Griffin is going to get every chance to fail before the Browns turn to McCown. He's worth a late pick as an upside quarterback play because of his running ability and the chances that the Browns are playing from behind more than they are nursing leads with the running game.

    Source: NFL.com - Vic Carucci

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot) is nearing a return to the practice field after recovering from foot surgery. The team is targeting Monday, Aug. 8, for his first practice.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If Watkins can get back on the field and suffer no setbacks through the first week or two, he could get back into consideration in the early third round, if not late second. The ride is bumpy with his propensity to get hurt, but Watkins has strong WR1 upside in any given week when healthy.

LA - QB Case Keenum begins camp as starter

    Source: The Associated Press

Los Angeles Rams QB Case Keenum ran the first-team offense Tuesday, Aug. 2.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We don't think it will take long for no.1 overall pick QB Jared Goff to take over with the Rams. Goff has reportedly been impressive during the early portion of camp, and we could see him named the starter sometime later this month. Fantasy owners should only consider the rookie gunslinger as a QB3. Dynasty players should see shades of a young Tony Romo (Cowboys) in Goff's game.

NYG - TE Matt LaCosse in mix to start

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Jordan Raanan

New York Giants TE Matt LaCosse was impressive in the spring, earning first-team snaps in practice, and he continues to get them in training camp. He has worked his way into a three-man race for the starting tight end job with TEs Larry Donnell and Will Tye.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Chances are at least two players will play a role at tight end for the Giants, and there won't be a reliable fantasy play unless at least one of them gets hurt. Stay away in drafts.

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman (back) participated in practice Wednesday, Aug. 3.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hillman was back at practice, but he didn't do a whole lot. He seemed to get swallowed up too often while other RBs like C.J. Anderson or Devontae Booker made good runs. He led the team in rushing last year, but Hillman is no lock for the 53-man roster this year.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Starks is an important handcuff for Eddie Lacy's fantasy owners. Lacy is in better shape this year, but he's a back who has been known to get banged up with his physical running style. Starks is currently going off the board at RB54 (13.07) in 12-team PPR leagues.

    Source: ESPN.com - Paul Kuharsky

Tennessee Titans WR Kendall Wright has been working as the slot receiver with the first-team offense during the early part of training camp and has made several solid catches during practice.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
He tweaked his hamstring in practice earlier this week, but the injury was considered minor. Even though he's off to a solid start, we just can't get excited about the WRs in Tennessee. The Titans are going to run the ball as much as possible with their 'exotic smashmouth' backfield featuring DeMarco Murray and rookie Derrick Henry. If healthy (Wright has missed six games over the last two years), we could only recommend the veteran as a WR6 for fantasy owners in 2016.

CLE - WR Corey Coleman has chemistry with QB

    Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer

Cleveland Browns WR Corey Coleman has shown good chemistry with QB Robert Griffin III during the early part of training camp. The two have connected on deep passes as well as in the red zone for touchdowns. Griffin and Coleman worked out together during the offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Griffin had one of the best deep balls coming out of Baylor in 2012...and Coleman has some of the best speed coming out of Baylor in 2016. It's no surprise the two would establish this early connection. Fantasy owners should consider Coleman the likely replacement for Travis Benjamin (Chargers), and the rookie could post WR4 numbers this year. When Josh Gordon returns from his four-game suspension, Coleman should take a back seat in the pecking order.

Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz has been inconsistent during training camp and is not a threat to beat out QB Sam Bradford for the starting job, in the opinion of The Philadelphia Inquirer's Jeff McLane.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's no shock to hear about the rookie's struggles. We should see him struggle but learn to get better during what should be a redshirt season for Wentz. Bradford is the likely starter early on, but if he struggles then we may see Wentz enter the lineup later in the year.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bradford is going to be running the Doug Pederson offense, so from a fantasy perspective he's not exactly going to be filling the air with footballs. We see him as a QB3 for fantasy owners in 2016.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It is perplexing that the Chargers won't just agree to Bosa's terms. He was the #3 pick in the draft and his compensation for the course of his first four years is basically set. The timing of his bonus payments and the terms if Bosa gets hurt or plays poorly enough to be released before the end of his rookie deal is not nearly as important as getting him in the mix right away.

SF - QB Colin Kaepernick holding his own

Source: Sacramento Bee - Matt Barrows

San Francisco 49ers QBs Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert have taken an equal amount of reps in practice with the first-team offense so far in training camp. Both have been sharper working with would-be starters than the second team. Head coach Chip Kelly noted the preseason games will be critical.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kaepernick's running ability would make him potentially the more valuable fantasy commodity of the two, but he would also short-circuit the fantasy profile of Torrey Smith and Vance McDonald unless he has come a long way as a passer. That he is staying with Gabbert is a good thing, but that staying Gabbert is a good thing for our view of Kaepernick shows just how far he has fallen.

Denver Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas altered his diet during the offseason, shedding six pounds to improve his quickness and durability. His goal is to get down to 222 pounds, down from about 232 last season. 'I wanted to come back a little lighter so I can get through the season,' Thomas said. 'Hopefully it'll help with the injuries and everything, be quick on my feet, be in better shape. I think that'll help my game.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Thomas has WR1 upside as long as the Broncos get semi-competent quarterback play. That is not a sure thing, so it is understandable to look elsewhere in the late second/early third even though Thomas was a WR1 last year with less than stellar quarterback play.

    ATL - QB Matt Ryan's practice picks a non-issue

Source: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - Michael Cunningham

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan throwing interceptions in practice isn't a concern of head coach Dan Quinn. 'This is the time to try everything, whether is a different route or a different look,' Quinn said Tuesday, Aug. 2, after Ryan threw a virtual pick-six during the team period. 'It’s also an important part for the defense, too, to know how they get after the ball. For us, this is what this time is all about is getting the timing down and getting the routes right. Some of that happens in our training camp practice. But for us, it’s about the ball, we know that.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Ryan was being overdrafted as a low QB1 entering 2015, now he might be rated correctly as QB18. It's hard to justify taking him any higher, but if he falls out of the top 20 quarterbacks, he could be a slight value. Quarterback is deep enough this year that you don't need to reach for your QB1 or QB2.

Silly really. Total compensation is set, so they quibble over timing of payout bonus. as well as some offset language? Just give Bosa full bonus up front and I bet he reports.

    Friday Update

MIA - RB Arian Foster showing to be best back Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Miami Dolphins RB Arian Foster has been 'head and shoulders' the best running back in practice, in the opinion of beat writer Armando Salguero.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We've said that if Foster is healthy, he remains an elite back. Of course, being healthy now and staying that way is another matter. We also need to see him get hit in a real-game situation, so we're not as excited as some are about him until then. Consider him an RB3 but he's poised for much more.

NYG - WR Sterling Shepard impressing at camp

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Jordan Raanan

New York Giants WR Sterling Shepard continues to make 'play after play,' and doing so while playing with the first team. It's 'clear' he's going to be a big part of the club's offense with his ability to make tough, contested catches.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He could be a huge factor this year as the Giants are dead set on getting him involved quite often. He might even end up as the second receiver on the Giants as we don't know how effective Victor Cruz will be. We don't want to get ahead of ourselves though, and would consider him as no more than a WR5 right now.

ARI - WR John Brown still in protocol

    Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals WR John Brown (concussion) is still in the concussion protocol, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brown has the potential to make big plays, so this is worth monitoring. His quickness and deep speed, along with defenses pulling towards Larry Fitzgerald and Mike Floyd have made him a consistent threat. We like him as a WR4, but he could provide more bang for your buck, especially if someone ahead of him gets hurt.

NYJ - RB Matt Forte will miss first preseason game

Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta

New York Jets RB Matt Forte (hamstring) will not be ready for the preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars Thursday, Aug. 11, according to head coach Todd Bowles, as he continues to nurse a hamstring issue.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're not at DEFCON 1 and so "the birds are not in the air" - at least not yet. This is dragging though and we aren't sure if the Jets are being cautious or if there is more to this than we know. At Forte's age, anything is possible. We still love him this season, and he should be a solid RB2 but if the injuries have already begun, we might see more of Bilal Powell than some people think.

BAL - RB Terrance West thrust into starting scope

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens RB Terrance West has put himself in position to compete for the starting running back spot with an electric camp, in the opinion of beat writer Jamison Hensley.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Indications were that Justin Forsett was going to be the starter but he hasn't officially been announced as such, so the position appears wide open. West dropped weight this offseason and appears to have shown up with a chip on his shoulder. The issue is that West isn't a pass-catcher, something Marc Trestman requires for a full time back. Watch this, but it looks very cloudy overall. We still think Forsett wins the spot, but if he gets hurt it appears to be a mess.

SEA - TE Jimmy Graham making progress

    Source: ESPN.com - Sheil Kapadia

Seattle Seahawks TE Jimmy Graham (knee) is getting 'really close' to coming off the Physically Unable to Perform list, according to head coach Pete Carroll. He's been 'pushing really hard' in his efforts to return.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Graham was poorly used last season, only really seeing a handful of games where the production was anything like what he had in New Orleans. A move tight end in an offense which desperately needs blocking tight ends, Graham may find himself in the same situation. We certainly don't trust Seattle to suddenly use him productively, which is why he is rated as a low-end TE2 right now.

SEA - RB Thomas Rawls getting closer to return

    Source: ESPN.com - Sheil Kapadia

Seattle Seahawks RB Thomas Rawls (ankle) is getting 'really close' to returning, according to head coach Pete Carroll. He remains on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rawls was very good before getting hurt last year, and he should be "the man" in replacing the retired Marshawn Lynch. The Seahawks didn't pray and wait though, drafting three backs this year. C.J. Prosise should be the third down back even if Rawls is back, and Alex Collins could fill in if Rawls is unable to play Week 1. If healthy, we do think Rawls is a solid RB2, but also would watch the rookies in camp and see how they look. The Seahawks won't hesitate to make a change if need be.

NYG - Odell Beckham misses practice again

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Jordan Raanan

New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. (leg) missed his third straight practice Thursday, August 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Apparently it's Flashback Week, as this is pretty much what Beckham did his rookie year. As that turned out very well for him we're not worried at all and consider him one of - if not THE - top fantasy wide receivers this year. Grab him as a WR1 and stop worrying.

DAL - RB Ezekiel Elliott doesn't practice

Source: The Dallas Morning News - Jon Machota

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott (hamstring) did not practice Thursday, Aug. 4, according to head coach Jason Garrett, and is considered day-to-day.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We still like Elliott in the first round but this is something that bears careful monitoring. Hamstring injuries are funny - they can amount to nothing or they can linger for months. We're hoping this is the former, not the latter because it's hard to resist this talent behind that offensive line.

CLE - WR Corey Coleman draws praise

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Cleveland Browns WR Corey Coleman was compared to Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith Sr. by Browns WR Andrew Hawkins on Thursday, Aug. 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Coleman is an exciting receiver, even though he is a Cleveland Brown. The whole "Browns" thing as well as the impending return of Josh Gordon rained on his rookie parade though, and we can't see him as more than a WR4 this year.

CIN - TE Tyler Kroft out 4-6 weeks

Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Jim Owczarski

Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Kroft (knee) will miss four to six weeks due to a sprained knee. However, he is expected to be ready for Week 1.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kroft is supposed to be pushing Tyler Eifert, who had a huge 2015. We see Eifert building on that as a TE1, which means Kroft, when healthy, is likely to take a back seat. Consider him no more than a TE4 unless Eifert chokes.

KC - QB Nick Foles terms

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Updating an earlier report, Kansas City Chiefs QB Nick Foles' contract is a one-year deal with a team option for a second year. He'll earn $1.75 million with incentives in 2016. His option for 2017 ranges between $6.75 million and $16 million based on 2016 performance.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's an interesting move for the Chiefs, but not shocking. We think Andy Reid is a guy who can get Foles back to where he was in 2013, if given a little time. Chase Daniel got signed away and clearly the other quarterbacks in camp aren't exciting the team. Again though, Reid grabbed Foles in the third round of the 2012 draft and we think he really is excited for him going forward. Foles is a handcuff for Alex Smith in fantasy, and that's all.

DAL - QB Josh McCown a focus of Dallas

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Updating previous reports, Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown has become a target of the Dallas Cowboys.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Cowboys do not want a repeat of last year and now that Kellen Moore is down with a fractured fibula, they will find another competent backup. Foles has shown flashes of talent and we believe he could develop into a decent starter again in the right situation. He'd have no value save for Romo owners but worth watching.

PHI - RB Ryan Mathews still out

Source: Delaware News Journal - Martin Frank

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) remains out of practice Thursday, Aug. 4.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The longer Mathews is out, the bigger the window for the rest of the backs, notably fifth round rookie Wendell Smallwood. Right now Mathews is an RB2/RB3 in part due to his fragile nature, and if Smallwood can show enough acumen while Mathews is out, a split is likely at the very least. Of course, Smallwood is also hurt, so at this point the impact is minimal but something to keep an eye on of Mathews can't get back on the field and Smallwood does.

SF - TE Garrett Celek to start in Week 1?

Source: Santa Rosa Press Democrat - Grant Cohn

San Francisco 49ers TE Garrett Celek is projected as the starter by beat writer Grant Cohn, citing the fact Celek is better than TE Vance McDonald at catching passes in traffic.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Celek started the season ahead of McDonald last year until he got hurt and is a better pass catcher overall. That said, the most we can reccomend in grabbing Celek is as a TE3 or TE4. He's barely roster worthy.

DEN - TE Virgil Green makes presence felt

    Source: DenverBroncos.com - Andrew Mason

Denver Broncos TE Virgil Green caught four touchdowns in red-zone drills during practice Thursday, Aug. 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Well, we know he can kick butt against air or guys in shorts. Mostly stuck blocking for Peyton Manning while Julian Thomas caught passes, Green now has the inside shot at a starting job. If he wins it, he could have TE2 upside. Until we know for sure, however, we can't recommend him for anything beyond TE4.

BUF - More impact needed from TE Charles Clay

Source: Rochester Democrat and Chronicle - Sal Maiorana

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay was called a 'matchup nightmare' by head coach Rex Ryan, and Ryan said Clay needs to be more of a factor in the red zone. The Bills had one touchdown by a tight end in the red zone last year.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Blah Blah Blah Blab Blab Blab. That's what it sounds like when Rex hypes a player. We'll believe it when we see it. The run-heavy offense, the unknown quantity at quarterback and the overall gameplan make us feel like his opportunities will be few and far between again this year. He's a low-end TE2 with a tiny bit of upside.

DAL - RB Ezekiel Elliott learning from QB Tony Romo

    Source: FOXSports.com - Nunzio Ingrassia

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott said he been learning from QB Tony Romo, and Romo said he has been teaching Elliott all the 'little intricate stuff.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Elliott first needs to learn to get healthy, but we are happy he is bonding with Romo. Elliott is a solid RB1 both in talent and situation, and we think he is in for a big season.

GB - QB Brett Hundley may miss preseason opener

Source: The Associated Press - Todd McMahon

Green Bay Packers QB Brett Hundley (ankle) is dealing with an ankle injury that is expected to keep him out of practice Thursday, Aug. 4, and head coach Mike McCarthy said he is ready with an alternative if Hundley can't play in the preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts Sunday, Aug. 7.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're pretty sure this is of little concern, save if you are a UCLA fan or want to see what Aaron Rodgers' backup looks like. Sure, even Rodgers gets hurt, but Hundley would be a large step down from the future Hall of Famer. The one thing which is a good takeaway to know about is he has shown an ability to really adapt and learn in short order. We won't likely see the payoff of the hard work until he moves on to another team, but Hundley has the tools and intellect to be successful when he finally gets his shot.

    JAX - Dante Fowler impressing

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Jacksonville Jaguars DE Dante Fowler has 'been embarrassing' offensive linemen so far during training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fowler has amazing talent as a pass-rusher from the edge. He's quick off the ball and has a good closing burst to the QB. After missing his rookie season with a knee injury, we can't wait to see what he can do in the NFL.

PIT - No WR Antonio Brown talks this summer

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Ed Bouchette

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown will not be negotiated with for a long-term contract this offseason. General manager Kevin Colbert said the Steelers are sticking to their philosophy of not negotiating with a player who has more than one year left on their contract.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We think the Steelers should re-consider from a player like Brown. His numbers are going to be through the roof if QB Ben Roethlisberger stays healthy, and then the Steelers may have to pay a larger price to keep him. He's already the best WR in the league, but there are several no.2 WRs who are getting paid more than Brown.

PHI - RB Kenjon Barner focused, working hard

Source: Philadelphia Daily News - Les Bowen

Philadelphia Eagles RB Kenjon Barner is in noticeably better shape and is having a solid training camp. Barner is focused on improving, not on the coaching change that occurred with head coach Doug Pederson now at the helm. 'You can't worry about a situation that's no longer your situation,' Barner said. 'My situation right now is Doug Pederson and this offense.' Barner has seen increased repetitions with RBs Ryan Mathews (ankle) and Wendell Smallwood (quadriceps) nursing injuries. He's trying to prove he has the durability to withstand a larger workload while his counterparts are sidelined.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With Ryan Mathews and rookie Wendall Smallwood banged up already, the opportunity is there for Barner to grab a taste. We've been burned by his potential before, though, and aren't ready to crown him anything. Keep an eye on this, but consider that it's early and don't draft him before the end of a draft.

ATL - RB Tevin Coleman out Thursday

Source: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - D. Orlando Ledbetter

Atlanta Falcons RB Tevin Coleman (foot) is out of practice Thursday, Aug. 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Coleman was hampered by injury last season, though Devonta Freeman's breakout production held him back as well. He's likely to continue to take a back seat to Freeman, who we see as an RB1. That makes Coleman no better than a handcuff or an RB4/RB5.

TEN - WR Kendall Wright out Thursday

    Source: ESPN.com - Paul Kuharsky

Tennessee Titans WR Kendall Wright (hamstring) will be out of practice Thursday, Aug. 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

While Coach Mike Mularkey has said he was happy with what Wright had done this offseason, he's been hurt too often the last few seasons. He's the best receiver they have in the unit, but that means nothing if he's banged up. We're happy they are being cautious with this injury, but it gives us pause. Consider him as a WR6 right now and no more.

IND - QB Andrew Luck to play preseason opener

    Source: USA TODAY Fantasy Sports
Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck and the rest of the team's starters will play in the preseason opener Sunday, Aug. 7, against the Green Bay Packers. Luck and the starters aren't expected to stay on the field long.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
They need to see what kind of kinks need to be knocked out before the season. We won't see him much—they won't risk hurting him in meaningless action—but we do see him as a strong QB1. His ADP overall is currently 40, with him tracking as QB3. That might be rich for some people but it indicates people believe he will bounce back and you'll have to "pay" if you want to get him in your redraft leagues.

    Saturday Update

PHI - WR Jordan Matthews exits with knee injury - looks to be minor Source: PhillyVoice.com - Jimmy Kempski

Philadelphia Eagles WR Jordan Matthews (knee) took a low hit in practice Friday, Aug. 5, and had to be helped off the field with a left knee injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It looks like Matthews dodged a bullet as the team is saying this was minor and nothing to worry about long term.

NYJ - RB Matt Forte still missing practice time

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets RB Matt Forte (hamstring) did not participate in positional drills during practice Friday, Aug. 5.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Forte has also basically been ruled out of the first preseason game. Bilal Powell is closer to an even split with Forte than their wide gap in ADP suggests.

MIA - RB Jay Ajayi returns to practice

    Source: Sun-Sentinel - Chris Perkins

Miami Dolphins RB Jay Ajayi (knee) returned to practice Friday, Aug. 5, and is showing no signs of his bone bruise to his knee.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ajayi's bone bruise was just a blip and nothing to worry about. Arian Foster has taken control of the media narrative in the backfield, but this will likely still be an RBBC no matter who takes the first series at Seattle in Week 1.

PHI - QB Sam Bradford most accurate in camp

    Source: PhillyVoice.com - Jimmy Kempski

Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford has 'easily been the most accurate quarterback of the three, as well as the most consistent on a day-to-day basis.' Unlike QBs Carson Wentz and Chase Daniel, Bradford is yet to have a 'clear and obvious clunker' through 10 practices.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bradford is good enough to hold down a job over poor competition, but can't distinguish himself beyond that. This is setting up to be an uninspiring offense in 2016. Bradford is only worth a pick in superflex and 2QB leagues.

NE - RB Dion Lewis may open season on PUP list

Source: The Boston Globe - Ben Volin

New England Patriots RB Dion Lewis (knee) might open up the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Volin is not the most trusted of the Patriots beat writers - that would be Mike Reiss from ESPN who reported back in May that Lewis was on track to be ready for Week 1 - but this is still very concerning. It's the Patriots, so we won't get any more information than they have to give. If Lewis remains out of sight for another week or two, it will be time to get worried, and we understand moving him down to the bottom of his tier, even though Lewis was a PPR RB1 last year that you could get in the fourth round this year.

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) returned to practice Friday, Aug. 5.

Seattle Seahawks RB Zac Brooks could end up being the third-down back to open the year if RB C.J. Prosise (hamstring) remains sidelined for an extended period of time, according to beat writer Bob Condotta.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Seahawks won't use Thomas Rawls on passing downs, and they might still look to a veteran back after final cuts. Either way, it appears Alex Collins or Christine Michael will be the players best situated to benefit if Rawls goes down again this year.

LA - TE Tyler Higbee works with first-team

Source: The Orange County Register - Vincent Bonsignore

Los Angeles Rams TE Tyler Higbee has spent time with the first-team offense during training camp, and head coach Jeff Fisher said he has made 'lots of plays.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Higbee has incredible natural talent, and he's a player we appreciate in dynasty leagues. Fantasy owners in re-draft leagues could take a last-round flier on Higbee if he continues to impress in camp and the preseason.

CLE - WR Corey Coleman showing nose for end zone

    Source: ClevelandBrowns.com - Andrew Gribble

Cleveland Browns WR Corey Coleman was praised for his ability to find the end zone by offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton, QB Josh McCown and QB Robert Griffin III.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The buzz has all been positive about Coleman so far during training camp. He's got speed to burn and should begin the season as the team's no.1 WR. However, after a four-week suspension Josh Gordon will return and he should draw plenty of targets away from the rookie. We like Coleman as a WR4 in 2016.

DEN - Good decision-making from QB Paxton Lynch

    Source: DenverBroncos.com - Andrew Mason

Denver Broncos QB Paxton Lynch displayed a willingness to take what the defense was giving him in practice Thursday, Aug. 4, and he was able to anticipate his receivers' breaks out of their routes.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lynch has been hit-and-miss in practice with the Broncos. The tools are obvious; arm strength, athleticism, the ability to throw with touch. We like the way Lynch makes plays under pressure. In 2015 at Memphis, Lynch was the best QB in the FBS when under duress with 11 TD passes and only 1 interception. He's already shown an ability to carry that over to the pro level when under pressure at Broncos training camp.

New York Giants RB Shane Vereen will be utilized as the third-down and hurry-up-offense back this season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rashad Jennings has generated buzz during camp because he is being treated as an incumbent feature back after a strong finish to 2015, but Vereen will cap his upside as an RB2 with his steady role in an offense that will tilt pass-heavy.

PHI - RB Wendell Smallwood absent from practice

Philadelphia Eagles RB Wendell Smallwood (quadriceps) did not practice Friday, Aug. 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smallwood has a chance for significant touches this year if Ryan Mathews can't stay healthy, and signs already point to that outcome. The rookie still has to stay healthy himself. Darren Sproles and Kenjon Barner are getting more work while Smallwood and Mathews are on the mend, although Mathews returned to practice in a limited fashion today.

Chicago Bears WRs Alshon Jeffery (hamstring), Kevin White (rest), Eddie Royal (concussion) and TE Zach Miller (concussion) did not participate in practice Friday, Aug. 5. Head coach John Fox said it was a scheduled day off for White, and Fox noted both Royal and Miller are improving.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jeffery's hamstring is troubling just because soft tissue injuries have become too common for him. It shouldn't affect his draft stock too much unless his absence lingers for more than a week, but it is not comforting if you are spending a second round pick on him.

SF - WR Eric Rogers tears ACL

    Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers WR Eric Rogers (knee) suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in practice Thursday, August 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The second and third wide receiver competitions lose a player who had a good year to date. Bruce Ellington, DeAndre Smelter, Quinton Patton and Jerome Simpson are the main names in play for those spots, but this offense isn't likely to produce two fantasy relevant wide receivers.

MIA - WR DeVante Parker still absent

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Miami Dolphins WR DeVante Parker (hamstring) is out of practice Friday, Aug. 5.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Parker's hamstring injury isn't believed to be serious, but before we're confident to take him at his ADP we want to see him get back on the field and go through a few practices without incident. Kenny Stills has had a good camp and can continue to impress in Parker's absence, as they will be vying for targets outside the numbers.

PHI - TE Zach Ertz banged up

    Source: CSNPhilly.com - Derrick Gunn

Philadelphia Eagles TE Zach Ertz (head) is being evaluated for a head injury Friday, Aug. 5.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Ertz was cleared and is not in concussion protocol. He missed a game last year with a concussion on a scary play.

SEA - QB Trevone Boykin still Seattle's No. 2 QB

Source: The Seattle Times - Bob Condotta

Seattle Seahawks QB Trevone Boykin remains the clear No. 2 quarterback behind QB Russell Wilson, but general manager John Schneider said he is keeping an eye on the quarterbacks who become available during training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Boykin, an undrafted rookie from TCU, has the athleticism to work well in the Seattle system. His raw skill set does need some refining, and trusting him as a primary backup QB on a Super Bowl caliber team is a bit risky.

JAX - Dante Fowler not all the way back

Source: The Associated Press - Mark Long

Jacksonville Jaguars DE Dante Fowler said he is feeling faster each day but still needs to his explosiveness to come all the way back.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
That's scary to consider when reading reports about Fowler blowing by Jaguars offensive linemen in camp. Fowler has great burst after the snap and on his way to the QB. Having him healthy will be a great boost for the Jaguars defense this year.

    Sunday Update

DET - TE Eric Ebron tells teammates he's OK Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Updating a previous report, Detroit Lions TE Eric Ebron (undisclosed) told at least two teammates that he is OK after it was feared he may have torn his right Achilles' tendon, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We'll know more about this injury in the near future. The Lions added Marvin Jones and Anquan Boldin via free agency to bolster their passing game. We think those two WRs (plus Golden Tate and Theo Riddick) are going to make up a majority of their air attack.

NYG - Odell Beckham on the field

    Source: ESPN.com - Jordan Raanan

New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. (leg) is participating in practice Saturday, Aug. 6.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Beckham has missed a few days of practice with this minor leg injury, but now he's back. Fantasy owners should be taking him as a top-3 pick in PPR leagues.

LA - QB Case Keenum to start preseason game

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Los Angeles Rams QB Case Keenum will be the starting quarterback for the first preseason game Saturday, Aug. 13.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Keenum is at the top of the depth chart--for now. He may even begin the regular season as the starter, but there's a good chance it's rookie Jared Goff instead. Goff has been impressing during Rams camp so far, and the no.1 overall pick has exciting upside. When he fully develops as a pro, we see him as a Tony Romo-like prospect as a passer.

CLE - WR Corey Coleman has terrific practice

    Source: ESPNCleveland.com - Tony Grossi

Cleveland Browns WR Corey Coleman caught three passes of at least 35 yards during practice Friday, Aug. 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Coleman has been quite impressive this year in training camp. The rookie has drawn comparisons to Steve Smith (Ravens) by teammates, and he's turned the heads of fans and media in attendance. We've always seen him game in a similar style to that of John Brown (Cardinals). Like Brown, Coleman has speed to burn and will get by defenders in a hurry. The rookie could perform like a WR4 with upside the first month of the season, but when Josh Gordon comes back from suspension (after four weeks) Coleman's value could take a hit.

PIT - Le'Veon Bell back to full strength

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell is 'running and cutting without thinking about his surgically repaired knee', according to ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bell's four-game suspension has a silver lining--more time for his knee to get rest. Nobody was sure about his health status entering training camp, but all reports have been positive about the superstar runner. Even with his suspension, we recommend considering Bell in the second or third round of your PPR league drafts.

NE - RB Dion Lewis thinks he can practice

Source: Boston Herald - Jeff Howe

New England Patriots RB Dion Lewis (knee) believes he can practice right now, but the Patriots are taking things slow.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lewis can be a difference-maker with the ball in his hands for the Patriots. The team is going to lean on their rushing attack the first four weeks of the season while Tom Brady is suspended. Lewis could be a big part of what they do...if he's ready. It is not known if Lewis will start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list but it appears unlikely at this point.

JAX - Coach happy with QB Blake Bortles

    Source: The Florida Times-Union - Ryan O'Halloran

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley has been happy with QB Blake Bortles even though he has completed only 56.9% of his passes with four interceptions during team drills. 'I've been very, very pleased with Blake; very excited about him,' Bradley said. 'He has a stronger command of the offense and he's playing with good poise. If there's a mistake made, he reacts quicker to it and recovers quicker from it.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners will be happy with Bortles if he just duplicates what he did last year. Bortles finished as the no.4 fantasy QB in 2015, and with continued emphasis on their passing attack we think he finishes as a top-10 player at his position at least. He has a current ADP of QB9 (8.06) in 12-team PPR leagues.

TEN - RB Derrick Henry a slow starter

Source: The Tennessean - Jason Wolf

Tennessee Titans RB Derrick Henry was called a slow starter by head coach Mike Mularkey. 'I hope that's not the case in games,' Mularkey said. 'We need him to be full strength. As soon as we call his number, he needs to hit things better.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
This is not what you want to hear about the rookie back. Henry is a swift player, and he's tough to bring down when he builds a head of steam. However, he's an upright runner and not as powerful as one would assume for a back his size. We've always compared Henry to former Giants RB Brandon Jacobs. This year, Henry will work in some form of a RBBC with starter DeMarco Murray. For fantasy purposes, he's a RB4 in 2016.

SD - RB Melvin Gordon returning kicks

    Source: Chargers.com - Ricky Henne

San Diego Chargers RB Melvin Gordon saw reps as kickoff returner Friday, Aug. 5, but head coach Mike McCoy wouldn't commit to Gordon being used in the role permanently.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's a dangerous move to put your primary RB in the game as a return man. We don't think Gordon takes that role as the team needs to make sure he's healthy so he can tote the rock. Coming back from microfracture knee surgery in January, the reports have been positive about Gordon coming out of Chargers camp. We see him as a RB3 in PPR leagues as teammate Danny Woodhead should have more value (likely a RB2) in that format.

CIN - TE Tyler Eifert resumes running

Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Paul Dehner Jr.

Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert (ankle) ran on the side field for the first time during training camp Thursday, Aug. 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Eifert is still weeks away from re-taking the field, and it could even be until October based on the revealing of his ankle surgery being on the inside of his ankle instead of the outside. That surgery often has a return to play timeline of 5-6 months instead of the 3-4 months that was originally reported.

CHI - RB Jordan Howard quicker than expected

Source: Chicago Tribune - MIchael Dwojak

Chicago Bears rookie RB Jordan Howard has caught the eye of running backs coach Stan Drayton, showing impressive short-space quickness for a 230-pounder.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Howard is a name all fantasy owners need to become familiar with. He may be the most naturally talented runner in this class not named Ezekiel Elliott (Cowboys). The rookie could have a larger role than some think as Jeremy Langford has struggled a bit in camp and Kadeem Carey is not as powerful or instinctive. In the last two rounds of your draft, add Howard as a "lottery ticket" for your team.

MIA - MIA hopes to lighten WR Jarvis Landry's load

Source: The Miami Herald - Barry Jackson

Miami Dolphins WR Jarvis Landry has been an effective kick and punt returner to this point of his career, but the team is hoping to have him focus solely on offense. Miami would like to see rookie WR Jakeem Grant assume both roles so Landry can focus on offense only.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

While his load could be lightened as a returner, Landry's role could grow even more as a receiver under new head coach Adam Gase. We like Landry as a high-upside WR2 in 2016. His current ADP is WR16 (3.04) in 12-team PPR leagues, and we think there's a chance he finishes as a top-10 fantasy wide receiver this year.

HOU - Houston hasn't talks with WR DeAndre Hopkins

    Source: NFL.com - Nick Shook

Houston Texans general manager Rick Smith said the team has not started discussions with WR DeAndre Hopkins on a new contract. 'There is not a negotiation happening at this point,' Smith said on NFL Network's Inside Training Camp Live. 'He's under contract for two more years.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Texans have a rule of not negotiating with a player who has two years remaining on his contract...but they did make an exception for J.J. Watt and they should follow suit with Hopkins. Set to make just over $9 million during the next two years combined, Hopkins is underpaid. We'll see if the two sides can work something out and not risk fracturing the relationship with a contract squabble.

SEA - WR Doug Baldwin missed practice

    Source: ESPN.com - Sheil Kapadia

Seattle Seahawks WR Doug Baldwin (leg) did not participate in practice Friday, Aug. 5, but was able to do some running and caught passes from quarterbacks. He had his leg stepped on earlier in the week but should return soon.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This doesn't sound like a serious injury. Baldwin may be limited in other practices, but he should be a full participant soon enough.

DET - RB Ameer Abdullah still limited

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions RB Ameer Abdullah (shoulder) is wearing a no-contact jersey during practice Saturday, Aug. 6.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Abdullah is a smaller back, and the Lions need to make sure he's fully healthy before he gets the slightest bit of contact. With their first preseason game coming up, we think Abdullah may get limited action...if he even plays in it at all.

ATL - RB Tevin Coleman limited

Source: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - D. Orlando Ledbetter

Updating a previous report, Atlanta Falcons RB Tevin Coleman (foot) participated in individual drills during practice Friday, Aug. 5, but sat out the team drills.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's going to be interesting to see how the Falcons split up RB duties this year. Devonta Freeman is the starter, but Coleman should be mixed in as a change-of-pace back. Right now, Freeman is coming off the board at RB8 (2.08) while Coleman is getting picked at RB40 (9.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

LA - TE Tyler Higbee a red-zone weapon?

Source: Los Angeles Times - Steve Dilbeck

Los Angeles Rams TE Tyler Higbee has been making plays since 'he walked off the bus at the airport,' head coach Jeff Fisher said Friday, Aug. 5, and Fisher expects Higbee to be an important red-zone target.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fisher had an athletic TE with the Titans and the Rams with Jared Cook, but he never really got the most out of him. Higbee may not be as large or freakishly athletic as Cook, but he can move well and attack the deep seam of a defense. Keep the rookie in mind as a late-round TE2 in deeper leagues.

SEA - Pete Carroll praises RB Christine Michael

Source: 710 ESPN Seattle - Liz Mathews

Seattle Seahawks RB Christine Michael has been 'on the money' during training camp, head coach Pete Carroll said Thursday, Aug. 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Talent has never been the question with Michael. Lack of preparation, problems with durability and other factors have kept him from playing up to his potential as a pro. With all the injuries to the Seattle RB corps right now, Michael is getting an opportunity to flash his potential.

MIA - Dallas Thomas still starting Source: The Miami Herald - Barry Jackson

Miami Dolphins OT Dallas Thomas is still opening practices as the starting left guard, ahead of OT Laremy Tunsil, and offensive line coach Chris Foerster said the decision has a lot to do with Tunsil seeing reps at other positions.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Tunsil could be an ultimate sixth lineman with the ability to line up at four spots and have the team lose very little. He projects as a stud left tackle down the line, but he hasn't been blowing anyone away in camp yet.
