NFL Player News - Week of 5/2/16

PHI - QB Sam Bradford not talking with coach

Source: The Philadelphia Inquirer - Jeff McLane

Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford has not talked with head coach Doug Pederson since asking for a trade, according to Pederson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He's got to stop this ridiculous notion of asking for a trade--especially continuing this after the draft when any QB-needy team (Broncos, Jets) added a rookie passer. Bradford has been handed his spot in the NFL after being the no.1 overall pick in the 2010 NFL draft. Now, he's going to have to compete for a job and get pushed by a rookie who didn't even play Division 1 football. We love Carson Wentz, but sitting him for a year may be the team's best idea...provided that Bradford is the starter.

TEN - Coach says RB DeMarco Murray still the lead back

    Source: TitansOnline.com - Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans RB DeMarco Murray will still carry the load despite the addition of RB Derrick Henry, according to head coach Mike Mularkey, and Mularkey said he called Murray after the Henry selection to assure him that his role wasn't going to change.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Always remember the "What else is he going to say?" question when reading comments like this from the coach. Murray's intended role for this year may not change (we shall see), but his dynasty value certainly takes a hit with Henry in the fold. We like Henry, but he's a new version of former Giants RB Brandon Jacobs. Henry is big, swift and powerful but he's a two-down player who needs room to operate. We're excited to see how he'll make the transition from Alabama to the pros.

IND - Owner wants QB Andrew Luck signed soon

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Wells

Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck is having serious contract negotiations with the organization, and owner Jim Irsay said he would like Luck signed by the start of training camp in July.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

What was the old line from Terrell Owens? "It's only a matter of time!" That's right, as in the near future we expect to see Luck rewarded with a contract that makes him the highest paid QB in the NFL. He's the key to their success, and the Colts need to do anything they can to lock him down for years to come.

CLE - Cody Kessler will get chance to start

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns QB Cody Kessler will have a legitimate shot to beat out QB Robert Griffin III for the starting job in training camp and the preseason. 'It's a competition. We'll let it play out,' executive vice president of football operations Sashi Brown said Saturday, April 30.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This seems ludicrous on its face, but an open competition is probably best for everyone. If Kessler somehow wins, it's a terrible sign for Griffin's career at this point.

PIT - Pittsburgh re-signing QB Bruce Gradkowski

    Source: FOXSports.com - Alex Marvez

Free-agent QB Bruce Gradkowski (Steelers) will re-sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers Monday, May 2, and compete with QB Landry Jones for the backup job.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's a good move for the Steelers. Jones hasn't shown the development needed to get excited about his future in the pros, and Gradkowski is a solid reserve QB who won't cause you to lose sleep if he's a spot starter.

STL - WR Tavon Austin may have option picked up

    Source: ESPN.com - Nick Wagoner

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin is expected to have his fifth-year option exercised, but the team hopes to sign him to a long-term extension.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It took some time, but finally the Rams figured out how to use Austin correctly. Last season, Austin had 52 receptions for 473 yards and five TDs--all career highs for the supercharged WR. In standard leagues, he was fantasy football's 21st-ranked wideout and that's about where he should finish once again this year.

CHI - S Antrel Rolle cut

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Chicago Bears FS Antrel Rolle was released Sunday, May 1, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The move frees up $2.7 million in cap space for the Bears. Injuries limited Rolle to only seven games in his only season in Chicago. Fourth-round pick Deon Bush or free-agent signee Omar Bolden will compete for Rolle's old spot.

MIN - T.J. Clemmings moving to left tackle

Source: St. Paul Pioneer Press - Chris Tomasson

Minnesota Vikings OT T.J. Clemmings, who started all 16 games at right tackle last season, will move to left tackle to serve as the backup to OT Matt Kalil, according to head coach Mike Zimmer. Kalil is entering the final year of his contract and the team had a logjam at right tackle due to the free-agent signing of OT Andre Smith and the return of OT Phil Loadholt, who missed the entire 2015 season with a torn Achilles' tendon.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Clemmings was one of a long line of Vikings' draft steals under GM Rick Spielman. He is a mauler, but raw as a pass blocker. Minnesota might not have any of the top tackles in the league, but they have the best tackle depth in the league.

BAL - Keenan Reynolds working on kick returns

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens RB/WR Keenan Reynolds has been working on returning kicks with retired RB Brian Mitchell.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Reynolds can do almost anything. A QB at Navy, Reynolds is best going to transition to the pros as a gadget RB or WR. He was impressive at the East-West Shrine Game earlier this year, and Reynolds could easily make the final roster or practice squad based on his agility and big-play ability.

BUF - Glenn Gronkowski heads to Buffalo
    Source: NFL.com - Gil Brandt
Undrafted free-agent RB Glenn Gronkowski (Kansas State) has agreed to terms on an undisclosed deal with the Buffalo Bills Saturday, April 30.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The final of the Gronkowski brothers, Glenn is a Fullback/H-back 'tweener. He would regularly line up in the slot then motion to the backfield as a lead blocker at Kansas State. That's what he'll do now if he makes the Bills.

    Tuesday Update

DAL - RB Alfred Morris fine with RB addition

Source: The Dallas Morning News - David Moore

Dallas Cowboys RB Alfred Morris said he does not regret signing with the Cowboys this offseason even though the team selected RB Ezekiel Elliott in the first round of the draft.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Elliott was by far the best RB in this draft class. Nothing is official, but he's got to be the starter at the beginning of the season since the Cowboys took him so high. Head coach Jason Garrett has not talked with Morris about his role on offense, but Morris is excited to compete for a job.

WAS - QB Kirk Cousins fine with contract status

Source: The Washington Post - Scott Allen

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins said he is comfortable with playing under the one-year franchise tag if the team wants to see him play in more games before they give him a long-term deal. 'I think that people make great decisions when they have a lot of information at their disposal, and if the Redskins would like more information from this next season to be able to make a decision on me long-term, I totally understand that and understand where they're coming from,' Cousins said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's a reason why Cousins signed his franchise tender so quickly. If he proves it (again) this year that he can play at a high level, then he could make even more money on the free agent market. Cousins also said he would be fine if the team wanted to give him a long-term deal before next season.

DEN - Devontae Booker to play early?

    Source: ESPN.com

Denver Broncos RB Devontae Booker should push for playing time as a rookie, according to beat writer Jeff Legwold.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This will be something fantasy owners need to watch for in 2016. C.J. Anderson signed a big money deal with the Broncos this offseason, and he's clearly the lead back. Booker plays a lot like Anderson and at least gives them a quality backup. He's good enough at everything to work his way onto the field when Anderson needs a breather. Anderson also has failed to stay healthy for a full season, so Booker will certainly be an important handcuff.

NYJ - Christian Hackenberg may play in 2016

Source: New York Daily News - Seth Walder

New York Jets QB Christian Hackenberg may receive a chance to play in 2016, but general manager Mike Maccagnan would prefer if Hackenberg sat out his rookie season and learned the offense.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

At this time, the rookie may be the team's best bet at QB. Hackenberg is a tall, strong-armed QB who sees the field well and has the arm to make all the throws in the NFL. However, he's struggled over two years at Penn State ever since Bill O'Brien left to coach the Texans. We'll see if noted quarterback whisperer Chan Gailey can get Hackenberg back on the right track.

BUF - QB EJ Manuel's option not picked up

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel's fifth-year option is not being picked up by the team.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Manuel was the first and only QB drafted in the first round of the 2013 NFL draft. It was just a bad year for QBs, and Manuel has not impressed in the NFL. He's struggled to stay healthy and lost his job to Tyrod Taylor last year. This is likely to be his last season with the Bills.

DEN - QB Mark Sanchez staying focused

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeff Legwold

Denver Broncos QB Mark Sanchez still views himself as a starting quarterback and believes Denver drafting QB Paxton Lynch was affirmation of his starting status. 'Absolutely, that's the message I've received,' Sanchez said. 'I'm thrilled with the opportunity.' Sanchez hasn't let Lynch or any potential trades change his focus. 'I just kind of learned with time, who knows what's going to happen and who cares? What are you supposed to do? Meet your teammates, develop a relationship with them, learn the playbook, get involved in the community, that's it, those three things.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lynch is a project, and he may not be ready to start by the beginning of the regular season. We think Sanchez has a good chance to start the year for the Broncos at the top of the depth chart.

DAL - Dallas not worried about Dak Prescott

    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Dallas Cowboys rookie QB Dak Prescott's said his DUI charge in March is something of the past and won't happen again. 'It was a mistake, but it's going to make me a better person and it already has,' Prescott said. Owner Jerry Jones said Prescott's character and judgment will help him mitigate his past mistakes. 'It's certainly something you should look at with the quarterback spot,' Jones said, 'but when you really look at it, what is impressive is that from everybody around him, the recommendations he got from everybody and the time spent with him, we don't think there's character issues here.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Many people in the scouting community insist that Prescott's DUI was not an indicator of the type of person he is. Prescott will get a chance to develop behind Tony Romo as the team's QB of the future. We like his rushing ability and see some flashes of Donovan McNabb to his game.

TB - PK Connor Barth released

    Source: ESPN - Adam Caplan

Tampa Bay Buccaneers PK Connor Barth was released Monday, May 2.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bucs moved up in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft to select kicker Roberto Aguayo. A bold move that pretty much insured that Barth was going to get his walking papers.

STL - WR Tavon Austin's option exercised

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin's fifth-year option was picked up Monday, May 2, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Last season, Austin had 52 receptions for 473 yards and five TDs--all career highs for the supercharged WR. In standard leagues, he was fantasy football's 21st-ranked wideout and that's about where he should finish once again this year.

MIN - WR Cordarrelle Patterson's option declined

    Source: ESPN.com - Ben Goessling

Minnesota Vikings WR Cordarrelle Patterson's fifth-year option was declined by the Vikings Monday, May 2, according to a league source. Patterson caught only two passes in 2015.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Patterson has been a huge disappointment as a pro. He can make some plays on special teams, but he's not developed as a WR the way the Vikings had hoped.

TEN - Jack Conklin the right tackle?

    Source: FOXSports.com - Peter Schrager

Tennessee Titans OT Jack Conklin is expected to start at right tackle this year, with OT Taylor Lewan serving as the left tackle, according to general manager Jon Robinson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Conklin can start on either side of the line. In fact, he may one day be seen as a better left tackle option than Lewan. The Titans may want the rookie to prove himself on the right side before moving him into Marcus Mariota's blind-side protector.

WAS - CB Chris Culliver could be back

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Free-agent CB Chris Culliver (Redskins) could re-sign with the Washington Redskins, according to general manager Scot McCloughan. 'The door is not closed,' McCloughan said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Washington has reshaped their secondary this offseason. The addition of Josh Norman was a huge move, and he gives them a great starter opposite the underrated Bashaud Breeland.

NYJ - DE Sheldon Richardson's option exercised

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

New York Jets DE Sheldon Richardson had his fifth-year option exercised Monday, May 2.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A great move for the Jets here. Richardson is one of the best at his position, and the fifth-year option pays him just over $8 million in 2017. The option is guaranteed for injury only.

DET - Ziggy Ansah's option exercised

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Detroit Lions DE Ziggy Ansah had his fifth-year option exercised Monday, May 2.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This was a no-brainer decision for the Lions. With 30.5 sacks over the last three seasons, Ansah is one of the league's best pass-rushers. The option pays him 12.7 million in 2017 which is an incredibly affordable price with the current market for players like him. We'll see if the Lions can lock him down with a long-term deal as reports indicate they have no plans of doing so.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

MIN - Laquon Treadwell a physical receiver

    Source: Vikings.com - Lindsey Young

Minnesota Vikings WR Laquon Treadwell adds a physicality dimension and the ability to grab jump balls, according to Vikings general manager Rick Spielman. 'As we sat there and talked with the coaches, the biggest thing is the catching radius, the ability to catch in traffic, to go up and get jump balls and the physicality of him as a receiver, getting in and out of his cuts,' Spielman said. 'You can just see he generates a lot of power when he's getting off the line of scrimmage. I could put a highlight reel together, and I know Adrian Peterson's going to be very excited how this guy plays the game and blocks at the edge, but he's a receiver that just plays with a chip on his shoulder in all phases of the game.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Treadwell reminds us of DeAndre Hopkins (Texans) because of his body control, great concentration and ability to work the sidelines. He'll make a great target for QB Teddy Bridgewater not only in 2016 but also going forward. Treadwell and Bridgewater will be able to grow together for years to come.

    NYJ - Wanted Laremy Tunsil

    Source: NJ.com - Darryl Slater

Miami Dolphins OT Laremy Tunsil was being pursued by the New York Jets before the Dolphins selected him in the NFL draft.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He could have gone off the board much earlier, but a video of Tunsil ripping a bong load with a gas mask on caused his stock to take a tumble. He may be a "MacGyver Smoker" but it wasn't great for the start of his professional career. Tunsil went to the Miami Dolphins with the 13th-overall pick. Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan said New York tried to move up to take Tunsil.

NYJ - New York could keep four quarterbacks

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets QBs Geno Smith, Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg, and possibly free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets) could all be on New York's roster when the 2016 regular season commences. General manager Mike Maccagnan said if it's in the best interest of the team then they will keep four quarterbacks. 'It's been done before,' Maccagnan said. 'To me, it's a position where you have to take some time to really invest, grow and develop players.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Jets could have Fitzpatrick compete with Geno Smith for the starting job. They could then see if Petty could hold off Hackenberg for the third-string/developmental job. The loser of that battle could wind up on the team's practice squad. The talks with Fitzpatrick are at a standstill right now, but things could change quickly at any time.

NYJ - General manager excited for QB Geno Smith

    Source: NJ.com - Dan Duggan

New York Jets QB Geno Smith could start for the Jets in 2016 if free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets) is not re-signed. That prospect has general manager Mike Maccagnan excited. 'Right now, Geno has been a starter for us, and actually played quite well prior to getting hurt last year, and was doing a good job in the offseason,' Maccagnan said. 'So we're kind of excited to see what Geno can do, coming back. And we feel good about that.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Is Maccagnan serious here? Smith gets to work under noted quarterback whisperer Chan Gailey for another season, so there may be a little bit of hope for him yet. However, Smith needs to prove that he can consistently make good decisions as a passer under pressure. A broken jaw last year (caused by a former teammate) knocked Smith out of the lineup where Ryan Fitzpatrick was able to take over and thrive as the starter.

GB - WR Davante Adams may not make team

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Tom Silverstein

Green Bay Packers WR Davante Adams' roster spot is not a lock for the 2016 season, in the opinion of Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. WRs Jared Abbrederis, Ty Montgomery, Jeff Janis and Trevor Davis are also not guaranteed roster spots.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's certainly possible as Adams is not a lock for the final roster. Without Jordy Nelson last year, the opportunity was there for Adams to do more and he failed miserably. He ended the season as the 83rd ranked WR in standard scoring fantasy leagues with 50 catches, 483 yards and only one touchdown. Adams will have to prove himself this year as the Packers have a talented group of WRs behind Nelson and Randall Cobb.

OAK - TE Clive Walford injured in accident

Source: FOXSports.com - Mike Garafolo and Peter Schrager

Oakland Raiders TE Clive Walford (knee) suffered a knee injury earlier this offseason in an all-terrain vehicle accident, according to sources. He is expected back for training camp, and one source said the injury may not be as bad as originally thought. It's unclear what his injury was, but indications are that he's weeks removed from surgery.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ouch. Fantasy owners need to keep an eye on his recovery. Walford is one of our favorite young TEs in the league and could easily become a favorite target for QB Derek Carr.

PIT - Decline option on OLB Jarvis Jones

The Pittsburgh Steelers declined the 2017 fifth-year option on LB Jarvis Jones Monday, May 2.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Potential is a dirty, filthy word as three-time Super Bowl champion Mark Schlereth (ESPN) always says. Jones had incredible potential as the 17th-overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft, but with only five career sacks he's been a huge disappointment. It's no surprise the team wouldn't add the option.

MIN - Moritz Boehringer agrees to deal
    Source: Vikings.com
The Minnesota Vikings signed WR Moritz Boehringer to a contract Monday, May 2. The sixth-round pick is the first selection from the 2016 NFL draft to sign a deal.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Boehringer played for the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns of the German Football League. In 2015, Boehringer had 59 receptions for 1,232 yards and 13 touchdowns in 16 games played but it was his pro day that really got Draft Twitter abuzz. He reminds many in the scouting community of Jeff Janis (Packers) because of his size (6'4" 225 pounds), speed (4.43 40-yard dash) combination.

    Thursday Update

DAL - Ezekiel Elliott can help defense

Source: The Dallas Morning News - Jon Machota

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott will be a valuable part of the Cowboys' offense, but defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli believes he'll help the defense, too. Marinelli said the Dallas defense will play the Dallas offense more than anyone, and guys like Elliott and WR Dez Bryant will force the defense to be physical and be better prepared for opposing offenses.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A strong rushing attack is going to help the defense by staying on the field. This allows the defense to rest, and it causes an opposing offense to get cold. Elliott should be the focal point of the Cowboys offense as a rookie, and he could easily produce like a RB1 for fantasy owners. The rookie is clearly an option to take in the late first round of your fantasy draft.

SF - QB Blaine Gabbert showing leadership

    Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert has taken control of the 49ers' offseason program while QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) recovers from multiple surgeries. TE Garrett Celek said Gabbert is showing leadership and making good decisions on the field during workouts. 'I think he's definitely developing more and more as the days go on,' Celek said. 'But, right now, we're all in the same boat learning this offense.' OG Zane Beadles said Gabbert carries himself well in the locker room and acts like a professional, adding that Gabbert is always studying and trying to become better.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gabbert has a shot to impress with Kaepernick on the mend. He's athletic enough to run the Chip Kelly system, and if Gabbert gets rid of the ball quickly he won't be susceptible to seeing ghosts (feeling the pass rush when it's not there) like he has been in a more traditional offense.

New York Giants CB Eli Apple, the team's first-round pick of Ohio State, will be tried working as the slot cornerback during the offseason despite the fact he has never played the position before.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're not sure that's his best spot. Apple is a physical corner who can play close to the line of scrimmage. He lacks quick reactive skills and struggles to diagnose routes quickly. That sounds like a bad fit as a slot corner. Put him on the outside where he can play press man or press bail against taller WRs.

BUF - Buffalo wants to lock up QB Tyrod Taylor

Source: WGR Sports Radio 550 - Sal Capaccio

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor is a player the team wants to lock up with a long-term deal, and general manager Doug Whaley said Tuesday, May 3, he is 'supremely confident there's a chance' a deal will get done.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Things change quickly around here. Not that long ago, there were rumblings that Taylor may be unhappy with the Bills and the team could move on. Now, (with LT Cordy Glenn wrapped up) the team is looking to get a new deal with Taylor done. Taylor is only making $1 million this year which is incredibly low considering that a guy like Mark Sanchez (Broncos) is making $4.5 million.

SF - QB Colin Kaepernick resumes throwing

Source: Sacramento Bee - Matt Barrows

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) has resumed throwing a 'bit', according to a league source Tuesday, May 3, and it appears he will stay with the team to compete with QB Blaine Gabbert for the starting job.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Denver Broncos were considering trading for Kaepernick, but after the 2016 NFL draft it appears he is now staying put. The Broncos added a quarterback in the first round, as did the New York Jets, another potential landing spot for Kaepernick. We'll see if Kaepernick can beat out Gabbert in the new Chip Kelly system in San Francisco.

SF - Jeff Driskel a fit for Chip Kelly's offense?

Source: Sacramento Bee - Matt Barrows

San Francisco 49ers QB Jeff Driskel's athletic ability impressed general manager Trent Baalke, and Driskel felt the 49ers would be a good fit for him because Louisiana Tech's offense had similarities to Chip Kelly's.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We really like the addition of Driskel. His college career went off track at Florida, but he transferred to Louisiana Tech and put up a strong season in 2015. He followed that up with an impressive performance during the week of practice for the Senior Bowl earlier this year. Driskel is not afraid to challenge a defense with his arm, and he's athletic enough to keep plays alive with his feet while keeping his eyes downfield. In all our dynasty formats we'll be monitoring this young QB.

WAS - Josh Doctson will play outside
    Source: Redskins.com - Stephen Czarda
Washington Redskins WR Josh Doctson will start out as an outside receiver, playing behind WRs DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon, according to offensive coordinator Sean McVay. McVay and head coach Jay Gruden see similarities between Doctson and Cincinnati Bengals WR A.J. Green. 'I think that's a great comparison, because you look at a taller, leaner player with great body control and excellent ball skills,' McVay said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is the best spot for Doctson. He's a tall receiver who could use a little more sand in his pants. At only 202 pounds, Doctson will have to add muscle and prove that he can get open against physical coverage. We love his nose for the end zone and ability to make difficult catches seem routine.

DET - Sign WR Andre Caldwell

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com

Free-agent WR Andre Caldwell (Broncos) signed a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions Wednesday, May 4, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Andre "Bubba" Caldwell had provided the Broncos with speed and depth at the WR position. He can return kicks too, and we expect him to play a similar role with the Lions.

NFL - QB Johnny Manziel booked, posts bond

    Source: NFL.com

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) was booked and posted bond for his domestic violence case Wednesday, May 4, just one day before his first court hearing. Manziel was indicted last month after allegedly hitting his ex-girlfriend and threatening to kill her in January. He faces a Class A misdemeanor that carries up to a year in jail with a $4,000 fine.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The legal process will take its course, then Manziel will have to deal with punishment from the league. We hope he gets the help he needs. It's not about football right now...and maybe won't be ever again. The kid needs a new direction as his life has spiraled down for quite some time.

JAX - Myles Jack should be ready for season

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Jacksonville Jaguars LB Myles Jack (knee) is expected to be ready for the regular season, according to general manager Dave Caldwell. Caldwell said he doesn't see anything that would prohibit Jack from being on the field when the time comes. Jack will not participate in organized team activities, however, due to college graduation rules.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Jaguars scored a hit here with Jack. He doesn't need microfracture surgery on his knee at this time, and all reports indicate he'll be good to go for the start of the season. He's a throwback football player in the truest sense. Jack can play all over the field as he can cover, hit and always seems to find his way to the play quickly.

OAK - DeAndre Washington an asset on third down
    Source: Raiders.com - Eddie Paskal
Oakland Raiders RB DeAndre Washington will be an asset on third down and in passing situations, but general manager Reggie McKenzie said Washington is more than a third-down back. 'We think he's a complete back, and when he gets out in space, he can make you look silly.' McKenzie said. 'He can catch the ball, but he can run between the tackles as well as well as bouncing it outside. We think he's the total package as a runner. We really like him.'
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We really love the pick of Washington late in the draft for the Raiders. He was an impressive player on film at Texas Tech, and he continued to impress earlier this year at the Senior Bowl. Washington is a smaller back, but he is not afraid to punch it up between the tackles. He's electric in the open field and can stack moves on top of moves as a runner in space. Washington will compete to be a change-of-pace back with the Raiders in 2016.

Maybe they can work on a new wildcat formation with 4 quarterbacks on the field, Fitzpatrick takes the snap, Lynch and Geno are lined up as running backs and Petty is split wide or as slot receiver.

    Friday Update

SEA - RB Marshawn Lynch to Reserve/Retired list

Seattle Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch was placed on the Reserve/Retired list Thursday, May, 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're sad to see Lynch go, but we'll always remember "Beastmode" and the big plays he made for the Seahawks.

MIA - RB Jay Ajayi could see 15 touches

    Source: Sun-Sentinel - Omar Kelly

Miami Dolphins RB Jay Ajayi is expected to see 15 touches per game with the backup receiving 10 touches, in the opinion of Sun-Sentinel's Omar Kelly.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ajayi has to first be the starter for the team before we go spreading around touches. The Dolphins wanted to do anything they could to find an upgrade at the RB position this offseason. They signed C.J. Anderson to an offer sheet that was matched by the Broncos, and they kicked the tires of veteran free agents like Chris Johnson who ultimately signed elsewhere. In the draft, the Dolphins snared Kenyon Drake (Alabama) in the third round. His speed makes him a dangerous asset and potential starter in 2016. We'll see the two battle it out for the job in training camp.

CHI - Talks between Bears, WR Alshon Jeffery slow

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery has not made much progress in contract talks with the Bears at this point.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're not worried about this (or any franchise-tagged player) just yet. The two sides have until July 15 to reach a long-term agreement. The Bears would be wise to get something done with the star wide receiver.

CLE - Hue Jackson talks up running back duo

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns RBs Isaiah Crowell and Duke Johnson were recently lauded by the head coach Hue Jackson. 'Those two guys are as good as I've seen in a while,' Jackson said. 'Their talent is extreme.' As reported earlier, Jackson has pointed to Crowell, mainly, as the reason for the Browns not selecting a running back in the draft. 'I really think Isaiah Crowell is a really good running back. I think he's going to have a sensational season, I really do.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jackson dealt with a RB duo in Cincinnati with Jeremy Hill and Gio Bernard. It will be interesting to see how he does with Crowell and Johnson. We think Crowell could play the Hill role while Johnson plays the Bernard role for the Browns in 2016. We'll have a clearer picture of what is going to happen when camp gets close.

DAL - Jaylon Smith won't go on IR

Source: Fort Worth Star-Telegram - Charean Williams

Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith (knee) won't be placed on Injured Reserve because the team hopes he can play at some point this season, according to owner Jerry Jones.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones is hoping that Smith will be ready for a playoff run. The Cowboys need to get there first, and they need a healthy Tony Romo to do that. We think Smith should be shelved for his rookie season so he can be closer to full strength in 2017. The Cowboys seem to be confident about his recovery from an ACL/LCL injury earlier this year.

SF - Jeff Driskel signs deal with 49ers

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

San Francisco 49ers QB Jeff Driskel signed his four-year rookie deal Thursday, May 5. The deal is worth up to $2.629 million, including a $112,540 signing bonus.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're interested to see how Driskel develops as a pro. We like his athleticism and ability to challenge a defense vertically. The Chip Kelly system is fitting for his skill set.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

From Jacksonville State to the NFL. Jones tested unbelievably with a 41.5 vertical jump and 11-foot-1 broad jump. If it doesn't work for him at wide receiver, the Cowboys could also try him at cornerback.

WAS - TE Jordan Reed to work on blocking

    Source: CSNMidAtlantic.com - Tarik El-Bashir

Washington Redskins TE Jordan Reed said he's going to work on his blocking technique to clean up holding fouls.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We appreciate that Reed is trying to be a more well-rounded player. However, so long as he's healthy Reed will be a top fantasy asset at the TE position. Being a better blocker is great, but he's already proven that he can catch a bunch of passes and score touchdowns. His connection with QB Kirk Cousins makes him at least a top-10 fantasy TE in 2016, and he could easily be top-5 again this year.

WAS - RB Chris Thompson on shaky ground?

    Source: CSNWashington.com - Rich Tandler

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson's spot as the backup running back to RB Matt Jones could be in jeopardy after Washington drafted speedy RB Keith Marshall in the seventh round. The Redskins could also re-sign RB Pierre Thomas, which could pose an even bigger threat to Thompson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Thompson has struggled with injuries during his brief pro career. At best, he's a speedy change-of-pace back. The rookie Marshall has the upside to be a full-time starter for the team if he gets a chance. That's a huge difference in potential between the two.

WAS - TE Jordan Reed vital to QB Kirk Cousins

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Washington Redskins TE Jordan Reed's presence on the field successfully skewed QB Kirk Cousins' numbers in 2015. In 421 pass plays with Reed on the field, Cousins threw for 7.7 yards per attempt with a 111.9 passer rating and 24 touchdowns to four interceptions. When Reed wasn't on the field, Cousins threw for 6.2 yards per attempt with five scores, seven interceptions and a 73.3 rating in 148 plays.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The advanced stats certainly show what you see on film. Reed is crucial to Washington's success through the air. Washington was 6-1 when Reed earned more than 65 receiving yards this season and 3-4 when the tight end went under that plateau.

DEN - OLB Von Miller wants to stick around

Source: The Denver Post - Cameron Wolfe

Denver Broncos franchise free-agent CB Von Miller said he wants to sign a long-term contract that will keep him in Denver for the rest of his career. 'I'm going to be here in Denver no matter what,' Miller said. 'The contract is going to take care of itself. I'm going to be a Denver Bronco for life.' However, Miller isn't expected to show up for workouts this week.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Broncos have a proven history of signing their franchise-tagged players to new long-term deals before the July 15th deadline. Miller is set to earn a contract that makes him the highest paid defensive player in the league, and we think Denver will have no problem paying that price. However, it's worth noting that deals get done at deadlines. We're not expecting any movement on this contract situation until July.

PHI - QB Sam Bradford may report soon

    Source: CSNPhilly.com - John Clark

Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford may report for offseason workouts in the next week or two, according to LB Connor Barwin, who has recently talked with Bradford.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bradford's attitude is only underscoring his lame duck status as the Eagles starting quarterback. He's not worth a pick in typical redraft leagues.

DEN - John Elway confident in Paxton Lynch

Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Michael David Smith

Denver Broncos QB Paxton Lynch could become a starting quarterback a lot sooner than most people believe, according to general manager John Elway. 'Is that going to happen tomorrow? Probably not, but you never know when it can happen,' Elway said. 'We think he's going to be ready quicker than a lot of people think.' Elway said the team selected Lynch because of his athletic ability and strong arm.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Elway is laying the groundwork for Lynch to start at some point this year. Mark Sanchez isn't a high bar to overcome, and the Gary Kubiak offense is highly structured. The defense and running game will do the heavy lifting for this team, and the Broncos have one of the best wide receiver duos in the league, so Lynch would be inheriting a situation similar to the one Ben Roethlisberger had as a rookie with the Steelers in 2004, when he lost the AFC title game to the Patriots.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The 49ers are stuck with Kaepernick as they were unable to trade him to the Broncos before the draft. His shoulder was one of three surgeries that he's recovering from. Recent pictures show that Kaepernick is skinny and needs to bulk back up when he's ready to start working out as he normally does. We'll see if Blaine Gabbert can beat out Kaepernick for the starting job with the 49ers in Chip Kelly's new system.

NYJ - Coach happy with Christian Hackenberg

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets QB Christian Hackenberg showed a strong arm during practice Friday, May 6, and head coach Todd Bowles was happy with how he performed during drills. Hackenberg went 5-for-9 with one sack during 11-on-11 drills but did throw a nice 50-yard completion during the drills. Bowles believes Hackenberg will be able to improve as a quarterback over time.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hackenberg's first task will be overtaking 2015 fourth-round pick Bryce Petty on the depth chart - that is unless Ryan Fitzpatrick signs, which would probably give Hackenberg a guaranteed roster spot over Petty as the #3 quarterback. If Fitzpatrick doesn't return, then Hackenberg could see the field by the end of the season, considering Geno Smith's history as a starter.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

MIN - RB Adrian Peterson may play in preseason

Source: St. Paul Pioneer Press - Chris Tomasson

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson said he may receive some work during the preseason. 'I feel like getting out there and playing a little bit,' Peterson said. 'It's something that once that time comes around, I'll have a better feel for, like, 'Hey, I need to get out there just to kind of get the legs moving and get the pads (on) a little bit.' I can tell you, though, I'm definitely more itching towards playing a little more in the preseason than I have the past seven, eight years.' Peterson has not received a carry in any of the last four preseasons.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Peterson is still a solid RB1, but his lack of big involvement in the passing game limits his upside. He'll still be a late first or early second pick in most drafts. It's good to see him chomping at the bit.

DEN - Paxton Lynch working under center

    Source: DenverBroncos.com - Andrew Mason

Denver Broncos QB Paxton Lynch took all of his snaps under center during practice Friday, May 6. Lynch played in a spread offense over the last few seasons but has been working under center since his 2015 season at Memphis ended. He said he is familiar with the offense since it is similar to what Memphis used when he was a freshman, but the terminology is more complicated.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There was a time that the absence of snaps under center in college was a potential red flag in a quarterback prospect, but now it is not as big of an issue with shotgun becoming more prevalent in the NFL.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones could get a shot as soon as 2017 if Tyrod Taylor falters or can't stay healthy this year. The fourth-round pick's huge frame and fearless running style make him a potential goal line back if he is the starting quarterback, which always interests us in fantasy.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Nkemdiche has the size/athleticism and occasional marriage of those traits and some football skills as a pass rusher that often gets players into the top 10, especially in a weak draft like this one. He has a "different personality" and was part of an incident with Laremy Tunsil that included a fall out of a window and marijuana, so the Cardinals could have a late-round steal if he can fit in their locker room.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Rams got Goff a lot of weapons in the draft, but they are mostly low wattage, even if fourth-round pick TE Tyler Higbee (Western Kentucky) was the most talented receiver among the tight ends in the draft, and sixth-round pick WR Mike Thomas (Southern Miss) was much more impressive than his non-combine invite resume would suggest.

    Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers QB Jeff Driskel said he thinks he's a perfect fit for the 49ers. He said he's comfortable running the zone-read system. 'I've done it a lot,' Driskel said. 'Just about every offense I've been in, I've done the zone read. It's a play I feel like I'm good at. I got a good feel for what the defensive end is going to do. And have a good feel for hitting it up inside when the defense collapses on me. So it's a play I've done before in the past, and I know it's a part of the offense here.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Driskel is big and very athletic. He's worth monitoring if only because of what the Chip Kelly offense made out of Nick Foles for one year, and for Driskel's upside as a runner.

Apple was almost a member of the Miami Dolphins instead. The Giants got a phone call from the Jets to swap the #10 and #20 picks so the Jets could take Ole Miss OT Laremy Tunsil, with the Giants getting the Jets second round pick (which turned out to be Penn State QB Christian Hackenberg). The Dolphins would have likely taking Apple in that case. Instead, the Giants and Jerry Reese keep their streak of never trading down going.

Good. Sankey was always a bad fit for the Titans offense. They've got DeMarco Murray as their lead back, they drafted Derrick Henry to be part of their "exotic smashmouth" offense and they also have second-year pro David Cobb in the backfield. Sankey is likely to be out of the league or playing for another team in 2016 as the Titans are certain to move on.

DAL - Ezekiel Elliott gives Dallas a scare but is fine

    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott fell to the ground making a cut during a drill at minicamp Friday, May 6, and running backs coach Gary Brown told Elliott to slow down a bit. He is fine and finished practice without any issues.

As NFL.com noted, this time last year Jacksonville rookie Dante Fowler -- like Elliott, a top five pick -- suffered a torn ACL in his first practice with the team. "We don't need that," Cowboys running backs coach Gary Brown said of the slip, according to ESPN.com. "That's why I told him to slow down a little bit."

NYG - Paul Perkins the total package?

Source: New York Daily News - Ebenezer Samuel

New York Giants RB Paul Perkins was called a 'complete back' by the team, and Perkins said he feels he will be used to his full capability.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Perkins is one of our favorite "sleeper" RBs to watch from this draft class. He's got a game similar to that of Jamaal Charles (Chiefs). Perkins is a speed back who can make defenders miss in the open field. He can also be utilized as an effective receiver out of the backfield. Currently buried on the depth chart with the Giants, Perkins is still a player fantasy owners need to become familiar with.

SD - Matt Slauson joins Chargers
    Source: ESPN - Adam Caplan
Free-agent OG Matt Slauson (Bears) agreed to a two-year deal with the San Diego Chargers Saturday, May 7, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Chargers continue to upgrade their offensive line...a note that Melvin Gordon's fantasy owners should take note of. The team has worked diligently to improve their rushing attack after Gordon had a disappointing rookie season in 2015.

MIA - DE Cameron Wake should be ready

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Miami Dolphins DE Cameron Wake (Achilles') is expected to be ready to play by Week 1, according to defensive coordinator Vance Joseph.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Achilles' injuries aren't quite as devastating as they used to be. However, at age 34 we should see Wake limited to a part-time role as a pass-rusher for the Dolphins defense. There's a chance the veteran could be ready sometime during training camp.

CIN - DT Dominique Easley works out
Source: Boston Herald - Jeff Howe
Free-agent DT Dominique Easley (Patriots) recently worked out for the Cincinnati Bengals, according to a source. Easley has also worked out for other teams.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Easley is still only 24 years old, and if he's healthy there's no question that he can be a force on the defensive line. The Falcons have shown interest in Easley as well, and there's no question that he'll find a new home before training camp.

SEA - Seattle might lock up WR Doug Baldwin
    Source: 710 ESPN Seattle - Danny O'Neil

The Seattle Seahawks might ink WR Doug Baldwin to a contract extension this offseason in an effort to free up some room under the salary cap.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

At this time, the Seahawks have about $10.5 million in cap space. With a few moves here and there, we could see them approach Baldwin about a long-term deal. Baldwin had his first 1,000-yard season last year and he finished the season as the 7th-best fantasy WR in standard-scoring leagues. Those 14 TDs he scored in 2015 will be difficult to duplicate; especially with TE Jimmy Graham healthy and an emerging playmaker in second-year WR Tyler Lockett.
