NFL Player News - Super Bowl Week

DET - WR Calvin Johnson plans to retire

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson told head coach Jim Caldwell after the regular season that he plans to retire, according to sources. Caldwell has told Johnson to take his time with his decision, and the Lions are hoping that Johnson will change his mind this offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Johnson turned 30 in September, and reports say he told family that 2015 would be his last season. While he seems content with his decision right now, there's always a chance that Johnson changes his mind. He's due approximately $16 million in base salary (per Spotrac.com) in 2016, but he's got a cap number of just over $24 million after bonuses. If Johnson ends up retiring, the Lions will obviously make adding talent at the position a priority.

PHI - Lane Johnson endorses QB Sam Bradford

Source: NJ Advanced Media - Matt Lombardo

Philadelphia Eagles OT Lane Johnson said he thinks the team would benefit from re-signing QB Sam Bradford. 'I definitely want him to say,' Johnson said. 'If you look at the last part of the year, Sam was doing really well. Completing a lot of passes and getting comfortable. Him staying here, him being familiar with the players, I think that would really help us out.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bradford has the support of his teammates, but the Eagles may let him go in free agency if they feel that a better QB is available through the 2016 NFL draft. The Eagles have the 13th-overall pick, and there are early mock draft that have QB Carson Wentz (North Dakota State) falling to them. After Wentz's performance in the Senior Bowl, we don't think he'll fall out of the top 10. Bradford should return to the Eagles, but that's no sure thing as of right now.

NE - CB Malcolm Butler has knee injury

    Source: ESPNBoston.com - Mike Reiss

New England Patriots CB Malcolm Butler (knee) is not playing in the Pro Bowl because he suffered a knee injury during the AFC Championship game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Butler will not need to undergo surgery for the injury. We should see him ready to go for OTAs and minicamp later this year.

WAS - TE Niles Paul should be ready for workouts

Source: CSN Mid-Atlantic - Rich Tandler

Washington Redskins TE Niles Paul (ankle) should be ready for the start of offseason workouts and will work as the team's No. 2 tight end.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Paul has flashed quality talent during his pro career, but he's also struggled with nagging injuries. He should work behind Jordan Reed, and Paul makes for an interesting prospect to hold onto in deep dynasty leagues.

NE - WR Danny Amendola release not expected

    Source: CSNNE.com

New England Patriots WR Danny Amendola is not expected to be released this offseason despite a $6.8 million salary cap hit he would cause. Releasing Amendola would save the Patriots $3.5 million against the salary cap.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll see what the Patriots decide later this year. Amendola is a quality target for QB Tom Brady when healthy. The Patriots should make upgrades to the WR position this offseason, but we see Amendola sticking around in 2016.

MIA - Job security for QB Ryan Tannehill

Source: The Miami Herald - Barry Jackson

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill won't have any competition at quarterback this offseason, according to executive vice president of football operations Mike Tannenbaum. Tannenbaum is convinced Miami can win with Tannehill and does not feel compelled to draft a quarterback to compete with him.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Watch out for Tannehill in 2016. Working under new head coach Adam Gase, we should see a career-best season for Tannehill. It wouldn't surprise us to see Tannehill flourish under Gase and finish 2016 as a top-10 fantasy QB.

WAS - Washington could add running back

    Source: CSNWashington.com - Rich Tandler

Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris may not return next season, as previously reported, which could lead the Redskins to draft a running back or sign a free-agent running back, according to CSNWashington.com's Rich Tandler. Tandler said depth is needed at the position and that RBs Chris Thompson and Silas Redd are both coming off injuries and aren't workhorse backs.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The math here is pretty simple...especially if Morris doesn't return. Matt Jones may not be ready to take on a full workload in 2016. Chris Thompson is exciting to watch as a change-of-pace back, but he struggles to stay healthy and can't carry a large workload. If Morris moves on in free agency, then Washington will look to a rich free agent and draft class for more help at the position.

NFL - Carson Wentz delivers at Senior Bowl

    Source: NFL.com - Chase Goodbread

North Dakota State QB Carson Wentz showed a 'big arm,' accuracy and decisiveness during the Senior Bowl Saturday, Jan. 30, according to Mike Mayock of NFL Media.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wentz entered the week with arguably more pressure on him than any other player because of the hype around him and the stakes at hand. The young quarterback certainly did impress during the week of practice against the best competition he's ever played again. The North Dakota State prospect is likely to be a first-round pick, and he may go off the board at no.2 overall as the Cleveland Browns reportedly have interest.

KC - TE Travis Kelce ready to meet expectations

Source: The Kansas City Star - Terez A. Paylor

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce said he is 'more motivated than ever' after receiving a contract extension.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners are certainly hoping that's the case. Kelce has yet to crack the top-5 fantasy tight ends, but he's certainly got the ability to do so. With new contract in hand, we'll see if Kelce can play up to his full potential in 2016.

    Tuesday Update:

DEN - QB Peyton Manning expected to retire

    Source: NFL.com - Austin Knoblauch

Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning is expected to retire after Super Bowl 50 against the Carolina Panthers. 'The reality is he let the cat out of the bag a little bit,' NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said. 'I also know he has told close friends that he expects this to be his last game as well.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We wouldn't be surprised to see Manning hang up his cleats after Super Bowl 50. We'll see if Manning can go out the same way that Broncos GM John Elway did--as a champion. Manning may not announce a retirement after the game..win or lose. He's likely to take some time before making that decision public.

DET - Detroit wants WR Calvin Johnson to return

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson may be offered an extension by the Lions in an effort by Detroit to bring their star wide receiver back. It was reported earlier that Johnson made the Lions aware of his intentions to retire following the 2015 season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Of course the Lions want Calvin Johnson back! Not only are they thin at the position behind him, he's still a top-10 receiver in the NFL. Johnson is far from the end of his career, and he could be a top contributor to their offense for years to come. Nothing's official, and the Lions are hoping they can convince Johnson to play in 2016..and beyond.

DET - Al Golden hired to coach tight ends

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Former University of Miami (Fla.) head coach Al Golden was hired by the Detroit Lions Monday, Feb. 1, to coach their tight ends. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Golden had recently interviewed with the Cowboys as well. The Lions have now hired two former college head coaches this offseason as they added former Maryland coach Randy Edsall.

NYJ - New York has questions at running back

    Source: NFL.com

New York Jets impending free-agent RBs Chris Ivory, Bilal Powell and Stevan Ridley will all be unrestricted free agents this offseason if they are not re-signed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Jets won't have enough money to keep them all--if any. Powell seems to be a favorite of the coaching staff, and he might be the easiest to re-sign.

CAR - RB Jonathan Stewart back to practice

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle), who missed practice all of last week, was back on the practice field Monday, Feb. 1.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Panthers have kept Stewart out of action so that he could be as close to full strength as possible. The Broncos rush defense is incredibly strong, so we're not expecting much out of Stewart in Super Bowl 50.

CAR - OLB Thomas Davis may be limited

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis (forearm) said he could be limited in Super Bowl 50 against the Denver Broncos, but he has every intention of playing in the game. He returned to practice and used a cast Monday, Feb. 1.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The injury won't keep him off the field, but he may not get his normal amount of snaps. We'll know more about his playing status later in the week.

IND - QB Andrew Luck to be extended?

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck could receive a contract extension this offseason. The Colts have as much confidence in him now as they ever have.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That wouldn't be a surprise. Luck is headed into the final year of his rookie deal, and any new contract should make him the league's highest-paid player.

CLE - WR Josh Gordon vows to change

    Source: ESPN.com

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon said he plans to 'disassociate' himself from those that could be contributing to keeping him out of the NFL. Gordon has been suspended a year for multiple violations of the league's substance abuse policy, and he recently applied for reinstatement. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will make a decision within 60 days of Gordon's application.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're hoping that Gordon is serious about making a turnaround. If he's on the field, Gordon can be a top-5 fantasy wide receiver. The Browns QB situation is up in the air right now, but Gordon's the type of playmaker who can produce regardless of who is throwing him the ball.

CAR - OLB Thomas Davis has cast

    Source: Panthers.com - Max Henson

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis (forearm) was wearing a cast on his broken forearm during practice Monday, Feb. 1.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll know more about his playing status later in the week, but we're expecting Davis to be on the field in Super Bowl 50 against the Broncos.

CLE - QB Johnny Manziel investigation ongoing

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Updating a previous report, Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel is still being investigated for a possible assault of an ex-girlfriend Saturday, Jan. 30.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The investigation is ongoing, and it is the second time in as many months that the NFL has investigated Manziel for a domestic incident. Manziel is likely done with the Browns, and any sort of trouble from this would certainly and negatively impact any free agent interest he could get.

SEA - WR Doug Baldwin coming off career year

    Source: USA TODAY Fantasy Sports

Seattle Seahawks WR Doug Baldwin scored 11 touchdowns in his last six games en route to a 78-catch, 1,069-yard, 14-touchdown season. The 14 touchdowns nearly equaled his touchdown total from the four previous seasons combined.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Baldwin looks like he's arrived as the top wideout for the Seahawks. The 14 touchdowns will be difficult to duplicate in 2016, so make sure not to chase after those too hard in next season's drafts.

WAS - Washington to keep WR Pierre Garcon?

Source: CSNWashington.com - Tarik El-Bashir and Rich Tandler

Washington Redskins WR Pierre Garcon is expected to be retained and play out the last year of his contract in Washington, according to Rich Tandler and Tarik El-Bashir of CSNWashington.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Garcon has a $10.2 million cap number in 2016. With only $9 million in cap space (per OverTheCap.com), Washington won't have a ton of money to throw around in free agency. This draft class isn't as strong at wide receiver as previous years, so going for help at the position through the draft may not be an option. It's looking like Washington could overpay Garcon as they're thin at the position.

CHI - WR Alshon Jeffery likely to return

    Source: ESPNChicago.com - Jeff Dickerson

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery is too valuable to not re-sign with the Bears this offseason, according to ESPNChicago.com's Jeff Dickerson. Dickerson said Chicago can't afford to let Jeffery leave, especially since they drafted and developed him.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We could see the Bears slap the franchise tag on Jeffery so he doesn't get away. Putting the tag on him would give the team until mid-July to work out a new long-term deal. We would be absolutely shocked if Jeffery left the Bears this offseason.

HOU - WR DeAndre Hopkins receives praise

    Source: HoustonTexans.com - Drew Dougherty

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins, who had three catches for 71 yards and a touchdown in the Pro Bowl, received praise from former WR Michael Irvin. 'We don't know what the ceiling is,' Irvin said. 'You see the skillset, where he can catch footballs from anyplace in the world. There is no telling what the ceiling can be. He'll be rewriting a lot of records in the NFL.' Hopkins had 111 catches for 1,521 yards and a franchise-record 11 touchdowns in 2015. Hopkins caught a touchdown from four different quarterbacks this year, which is an NFL record.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

They just need to get him a quarterback in Houston, and Hopkins can be more dangerous than ever before. We'll see if the team can find a signal-caller through the draft or free agency.

NYJ - RB Chris Ivory unlikely to return?

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets impending unrestricted free-agent RB Chris Ivory is likely to sign elsewhere this offseason. Although he racked up an AFC-best 1,070 rushing yards in 2015, he'll be 28 next month, he declined late in the season, and the Jets salary cap situation is tight. New York has seven starters headed to free agency, and they have only $14 million projected in salary cap space.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We've commented on Ivory's potential departure before. The team doesn't have much room right now, but there will be some salary-cap gymnastics done in order to free up more space. That could be enough to keep Ivory in the fold. The market for running backs is going to be jam-packed in free agency, and that may keep prices (at that position) down.

GB - RB Eddie Lacy looking to shape up

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy was advised to lose 30 pounds in the offseason, and he's committed to it.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Anyone who has lost weight (or needs to lose weight) can tell you that 30 pounds is a lot. Lacy will have the benefit of an NFL weight program, but that is a massive undertaking with the start of training camp about six months away. Lacy will need to shed the weight, then he will need to prove that he can perform at a high level with less around the mid-section. He will then need to prove that he can keep the weight off.

DET - WR Marvin Jones a top target for Lions

    Source: ESPN.com - Michael Rothstein

Cincinnati Bengals impending free-agent WR Marvin Jones could be the top target for the Detroit Lions this offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We could see Jones attract quite a bit of interest on the open market. In addition to the Lions, there's speculation that the Patriots want Jones as well. The Lions need to upgrade the WR position, especially if Calvin Johnson officially announces his retirement.

TB - Tampa Bay has interest in Braxton Miller

    Source: PewterReport.com - Mark Cook

Ohio State WR Braxton Miller said the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have shown interest in him and have remained in contact with him since Senior Bowl practices.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Adding Miller would make a lot of sense for a team like the Bucs. They are set on the outside with guys like Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson. However, they could use another quality target out of the slot. That's where Miller could come in. Right now, Miller is considered a second- or third-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft. He's an explosive playmaker who is a threat to score anytime he touches the ball.

    Wednesday Update:

NYJ - QB Ryan Fitzpatrick talks coming soon?
Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta
New York Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Jets are expected to discuss a contract extension in the coming weeks.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Fitzpatrick may not be the quarterback of the future with the Jets, but it just makes sense to keep him around as a placeholder while the team tries to find a young franchise quarterback. OC Chan Gailey has been able to get the best out of Fitzpatrick during their time together with the Jets, just like they did with the Bills years ago. Re-signing Fitzpatrick is the biggest no-brainer of all the Jets offseason decisions.

DEN - QB Brock Osweiler expected to start next year
Source: USA TODAY Sports - Tom Pelissero
Denver Broncos QB Brock Osweiler is expected to be the Broncos starting quarterback next season if they can sign him to an extension, even if QB Peyton Manning decides that Super Bowl 50 isn't his final game. Broncos quarterbacks coach Greg Knapp said Monday, Feb. 1, that Osweiler has done everything to put himself in a position to start for Denver next year. President and general manager John Elway said he's excited about Osweiler and is 'hoping to get something done with Brock this offseason.' Osweiler can become a free agent March 9.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Earlier reports indicate that Osweiler is looking for around $12 million annually and a short-term deal. That number might be a little high, but the Broncos are one of the best teams when it comes to salary-cap gymnastics. They might be able to get something done with Osweiler before the start of the new league year.

NO - Dennis Allen remains with Saints
Source: CBSSports.com - Jason La Canfora
New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Dennis Allen will remain in the same position for the 2016 season.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Allen failed as head coach of the Raiders, but he's a good defensive coordinator. He took over for Rob Ryan in November and helped stop the bleeding (a bit) on the Saints defense. Allen could continue to get more from this defense, but this team needs to add better talent on that side of the ball to help Allen out.

SF - QB Colin Kaepernick wants to leave
Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta
San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick wants to leave the 49ers and join the New York Jets, according to sources. The Jets are aware of and intrigued by Kaepernick's aspiration, but they are still in the early stages of their offseason planning and evaluation, according to sources.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
It's interesting that Kaepernick would want to leave now that Chip Kelly is the head coach. If somehow/someway he ends up with the Jets, we'd be intrigued...largely because of OC Chan Gailey. For years, Gailey has been able to adapt his system to get the best out of his quarterbacks.

    Source: IndySportsCentral.com - Mike Chappell
Indianaplis Colts PK Adam Vinatieri could be re-signed by the Colts this offseason. Owner Jim Irsay said they would like to retain Vinatieri, and he is hoping to get that done.

We don't see this as being a problem. It's good for both sides to stay together if the dollars work out.

IND - Good chance for new QB Andrew Luck deal?
    Source: IndySportsCentral.com - Mike Chappell
Updating a previous report, Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck is healthy and there's a good chance he'll receive a new deal this offseason, according to owner Jim Irsay. Irsay said there's a good chance the Colts and Luck can get a long-term deal done this offseason. There haven't been any major negotiations yet, but Irsay said that's going to be happening as March approaches.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
In the near future, Luck will be the highest paid player in the NFL. So long as he's healthy, the Colts can make a run at the division title and playoffs. He's a franchise quarterback and the future face of the NFL.

DEN - QB Peyton Manning dinking and dunking
    Source: NFL.com - Bucky Brooks
Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning targeted 62% of his passes within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage during the regular season, and he connected on 69.9% of those throws with four touchdowns and nine interceptions. During the playoffs, 63% of his throws are of the short variety, with 35% of his throws between 10 and 19 yards, which was up from 24% during the regular season. Manning has thrown 20 of his 24 pass attempts at intermediate range to the right or middle of the field during the playoffs.

Whatever works, right? Manning's passing chart shows a lot of throws close to the line of scrimmage. However, he's in the top 10 of air-yards-per-attempt average this season. Manning will get rid of the ball quickly against the Panthers, and it's up to the weapons like Emmanuel Sanders and Demaryius Thomas to make something happen after the catch.

CAR - QB Cam Newton excellent in red zone
    Source: NFL.com - Bucky Brooks
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton has a 105.6 passer rating and has posted a 39:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio in the red zone since 2014. He's thrown 26 red zone touchdowns this year without a single interception. The Denver Broncos ranked 20th in red zone efficiency in 2015, with 22 touchdowns allowed in 37 red zone possessions.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The headline should just read; Cam Newton Excellent. Going up against the Broncos defense is going to be tough, but we have a feeling Newton will find a way to make plays with his arm and legs.

Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Paul Dehner Jr.
Updating previous reports, Cincinnati Benglas TE Tyler Eifert (ankle) suffered an ankle sprain in the 2016 Pro Bowl. He simply needs rest and will be fine for all offseason activities.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Phew! Good news for the Bengals here. The Pro Bowl is not a game where you want to see your guys get hurt. It sounds like a scare and nothing more.

CLE - Trades for QB Johnny Manziel unlikely
Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot
Updating a previous report, Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel will be cut March 9, according to a source, as reported earlier. The Browns will entertain any late-round trade offers for Manziel, but they don't expect that to transpire, especially after Manziel's off-field antics.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Who would trade for Manziel? Yes, it's a QB-desperate league...but Manziel has so many problems off the field--not to mention his on-field deficiencies--that giving up assets for him seems unlikely.

DAL - Dallas unlikely to sign QB Johnny Manziel
    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer
Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel is unlikely to sign with the Dallas Cowboys if he is released by the Browns, according to ESPNDallas.com's Todd Archer. Archer said the Cowboys need a reliable backup quarterback, and that it's hard to imagine Dallas signing Manziel for such a need.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Yeah, we're just not as sure that Jerry Jones will stay away from Manziel a second time. Jones wanted to select Manziel in the first round of the 2014 NFL draft, but fortunately was convinced to sign OG Zack Martin instead. If Manziel is on the open market, we have a feeling Jones just won't be able to resist. Perhaps the Cowboys can add a reliable backup too, and then work to develop Manziel.

MIA - WR Rishard Matthews likely gone

Miami Dolphins WR Rishard Matthews isn't expected to return to Miami, according to Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Matthews wanted out last year, but he stayed and ended up putting up some decent numbers. In 11 games, Matthews had 43 catches for 662 yards and four touchdowns. His season was cut short by a ribs injury, but if he's healthy he can produce. We're excited by the fantasy potential of an Adam Gase Dolphins team, but it looks like Matthews won't be a part of what could be a dangerous offense.

SD - Tight ends to be issue for Chargers?
Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken
San Diego Chargers TEs Antonio Gates, Ladarius Green, David B. Johnson and John Phillips will all become free agents if they are not re-signed by March 9. Gates is expected to return, however.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Gates seems like one of those players that is going to retire with the team he started with. The former basketball star was quite a find for the Chargers, and he proved last year that he's still got something left in the tank. The Green experiment is over as he never played up to his potential with the Chargers. Phillips is a nice all-purpose tight end, but he does get banged up a lot. The position is clearly going to be one of emphasis in the offseason.

CHI - TE Zach Miller seeking $5 million per year
Source: Chicago Tribune - Brad Biggs
Chicago Bears TE Zach Miller, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent in March of 2016, is asking for $5 million per year in his next contract, according to a source.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Miller showed well in 2015, with career-best numbers in catches (34), yards (439) and touchdowns (5). Those numbers are decent, but they're not exactly at the top of the charts. It seems like $5 million annually might be a little rich considering Miller's injury history and limited track record.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Ward and Stewart are two critical players for the Broncos defense. They'll have to stay disciplined when asked to cover against Cam Newton and the high-powered Panthers offense. Ward may even be asked to "spy" Newton from time to time.

NYJ - RB Matt Forte an option for New York?
    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini
Chicago Bears RB Matt Forte wouldn't be ruled out as an option for the New York Jets to sign if he becomes available, in the opinion of ESPNNewYork.com's Rich Cimini.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
That's all good, but it seems to be a little bit dreamy. At this time, the Jets only have $10 million in cap space according to OverTheCap.com. Yes, there will be some salary-cap gymnastics done in order to free up more space but how much would they need to add Forte?

DEN - QB Peyton Manning talks arm strength
    Source: ESPN.com - Jeff Legwold
Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning conceded that his arm isn't as strong as it used to be entering Super Bowl 50 against the Carolina Panthers. 'My arm is what it is,' Manning said. 'Honestly, my having a little time off to heal my foot helped some of the other parts. ... My arm feels OK. My arm has not been the same since I was injured four years ago. ... If I could throw left-handed it would be a lot easier. ... It's just different than it was. ... It's got a few yards on it, miles on it, however you want to say it.'
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The arm strength talk is overblown. Manning has never had a rocket arm, and he certainly won't now. It's interesting to note that Manning ranks 9th this year in air-yards-per-attempt average (9.15 yards). However, he's among the lowest in the league on completion percentage of passes that travel over 20 yards. Manning has more arm strength than some think, but his accuracy is a bit shoddy when asked to throw long.

CAR - OLB Thomas Davis using hard brace
    Source: ESPN.com - Paul Gutierrez
Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis (forearm) was using a 'hard brace' instead of a cast on his broken right arm in practice Monday, Feb. 1, and thinks he might play in Super Bowl 50 against the Denver Broncos while wearing it.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Davis won't be a 100 percent against the Broncos, but that's not going to keep him off the field. Range of motion could be an issue with the brace, but we can still see Davis making big plays in Super Bowl 50.

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (Achilles') has been cleared to jog without pivoting, cutting or explosive activity.

Foster is still facing a lengthy recovery from this major injury. While Achilles' injuries aren't as devastating as they used to be, it's still something to be cautious with during a return--especially for an older back like Foster.

CAR - DE Jared Allen says he's ready
    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra
Carolina Panthers DE Jared Allen (foot) practiced Monday, Feb. 1, and said he's 100% ready to play in the Super Bowl. 'I feel great,' Allen said. 'Honestly, I feel, hopefully, I'll be a tremendous factor in this game. So, as far as physically, 100% ready to go, just preparing like normal.'
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We are leery that Allen is actually going to play with this severe foot injury, but hey...guys have played in the Super Bowl with a broken leg (Jack Youngblood anyone?). He'll be on the field as a part-time pass-rusher against the Broncos.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Detroit Lions TE Eric Ebron is likely to see a larger role in the offense regardless of whether WR Calvin Johnson retires or not.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
He'll likely always be remembered as the player taken instead of Odell Beckham Jr. Ebron has good athleticism, but he's yet to do more than briefly flash playmaking ability from the tight end position.

DET - Detroit watching Will Fuller
    Source: ESPN.com - Michael Rothstein
Notre Dame WR Will Fuller has good speed and runs a nice route tree, but his hands might be an issue. The team might be looking for a receiver if WR Calvin Johnson elects to retire, and Fuller is likely to still be there at No. 16 in the first round when the Lions select in the 2016 NFL Draft.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Fuller is more of a second-round pick in our eyes. He's a fantastic deep threat with the speed and ball-tracking ability to be a threat vertically. However, he's lean and can be pushed around on his routes by physical/aggressive corners.

DET - Ole Miss WR in Detroit's crosshairs?
    Source: ESPN.com - Michael Rothstein
Mississippi WR Laquon Treadwell might be on the wish list of the Detroit Lions, although it's unlikely he'll be available at No. 16 when the team selects in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He posted 1,153 yards in 2015, and he could provide a long-term replacement for WR Calvin Johnson due to his size and speed.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
This has to be a pipe dream for the Lions, unless they were to move up in the NFL draft. Treadwell is our favorite receiver in this draft class, and there's a good chance that he goes off the board in the top 10. Though not asked to run the full route tree at Ole Miss, Treadwell has the athleticism and explosiveness to get separation. He's got long arms and can pluck the ball out of the air regularly. This WR class isn't as good as the last two years have been, but Treadwell is a high-quality talent.

DET - WR Alshon Jeffery on Detroit wish list?
    Source: ESPN.com - Michael Rothstein
Chicago Bears impending free-agent WR Alshon Jeffery is tops on the wish list of the Detroit Lions if WR Calvin Johnson elects to retire. However, the Bears could use the franchise tag or sign Jeffery to an extension before he reaches free agency, so Jeffery to the Lions is considered a long shot.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Jeffery would be a great replacement for Johnson, but we don't think he's going to be available on the open market. The Bears will have a week to sign Jeffery before the new league year begins. If they can't get something done in that time, then a franchise tag would give them until July 15th to work out a new long-term deal with the star receiver.

    Thursday Update:

DEN - QB Peyton Manning has time for decision

Source: The Denver Post - Troy E. Renck

Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning will be given plenty of time to make a decision on his future following Super Bowl 50, according to general manager John Elway. 'He's got plenty of time, whatever time he needs. I think it's never going to be a quick decision. You don't want it to be. It's one that's going to change his life ... and it's always a hard decision,' Elway said, 'so we'll give him plenty of time.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Plenty of time indeed, but Manning does have to pass a physical before the start of the new league year in early March. Manning's body is crumbling as we speak, so we'd be shocked to see him return for another year.

CIN - WR Marvin Jones excited for free agency

    Source: NFL.com - Chris Wesseling

Cincinnati Bengals impending free-agent WR Marvin Jones is excited to test the free-agent market this offseason. 'I love Cincinnati, but at the same time I am a free agent,' Jones said. 'It wouldn't be good for me not to test the waters a little bit. It's just an exciting process.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

At this time, at least two teams (Detroit and New England) are rumored to be interested in Jones. According to this report, Jones does not want to give the Bengals a hometown discount as he prefers to approach free agency from all angles and hope an irresistible offer arises.

NYJ - New York not interested in Kaepernick

Source: CBSSports.com - Jason La Canfora

The New York Jets are not and have not been interested in San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick has wanted out of San Francisco for months now, and the hiring of new head coach Chip Kelly hasn't changed his stance. A trade remains very likely.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Jets may not be interested, but there should be a team out there who might trade for him. It seems like Kaepernick's time in San Francisco is over. Stay tuned.

New Orleans Saints RB Khiry Robinson (leg) has been cleared for jogging. Robinson is recovering from a broken leg he suffered late last season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Robinson is a player to remember (and potentially snare) in dynasty leagues. If healthy, Robinson can be an explosive runner and receiver out of the backfield.

IND - TE Jack Doyle could have bigger role

    Source: Colts.com - Kevin Bowen

Indianapolis Colts TE Jack Doyle may see an increase in usage in 2016 and could assume the backup tight end position if one of impending free-agent TEs Coby Fleener or Dwayne Allen don't re-sign.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We have a feeling that Allen could move on in free agency (Steelers?) for a larger role. Fleener has a connection with QB Andrew Luck dating back to their college days together at Stanford. Doyle may see an increase in playing time, but we're not super excited by his fantasy potential if he's still a backup behind Fleener.

NFL - Jared Goff to be active at combine

California QB Jared Goff said he will participate in all the drills, passing and otherwise, at the NFL combine.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Goff could be the first QB off the board in the 2016 NFL draft, and there's a good chance he'll be a top-10 pick. We love that he's not afraid of competition, and Goff should be able to put on a show at the Scouting Combine. Goff has a fast processor and a smooth passing motion. He's got the makings of a franchise quarterback.

Cleveland Browns WR Travis Benjamin may receive a new deal in the near future, according to his agent.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Finally! A Browns story that doesn't have to do with QB Johnny Manziel. The Browns would be wise to lock up Benjamin. Proving he was more than just a punt returner, Benjamin had career-best numbers in receptions (68), receiving yards (966) and touchdowns (5). He finished as the 29th receiver in standard scoring leagues. With better play at the QB position in 2016, Benjamin could break into the top-20 at his position.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers RB Dri Archer signed a Reserve/Futures contract with the New York Jets Wednesday, Feb. 3.

Archer, a third-round pick of the Steelers in 2014, spent about half of the 2015 season out of the league. Lacking the size to be anything more than a change-of-pace back, Archer can contribute as a return man if needed.

PHI - Philly could draft quarterback

    Source: PhillyVoice.com - Jimmy Kempski

If Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford does not return in 2016, the Eagles could use a high draft pick on the position and look for a quarterback in free agency to help bridge the gap until that rookie is capable of starting, in the opinion of PhillyVoice.com's Jimmy Kempski.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Eagles have the 13th-overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft. There may be as many as four QBs taken in the first round of the draft, but by the time the pick comes up for the Eagles guys like Carson Wentz (North Dakota State) and Jared Goff (California) could be gone. That would leave players like Connor Cook (Michigan State) or Paxton Lynch (Memphis) as options for the Eagles. Under new head coach Doug Pederson, a guy like Lynch would make some sense.

PHI - QB Sam Bradford unlikely to return?

    Source: PhillyVoice.com - Jimmy Kempski

Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford has a good chance of not returning to Philadelphia next season, according to Jimmy Kempski of PhillyVoice.com. Kempski said he would lean heavily towards Bradford not being re-signed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

New head coach Doug Pederson has spoken highly of Bradford, but there's no guarantee they'll work to keep him. Bradford is an okay starter, and he'd be a decent fit in Pederson's offense. However, injuries and inconsistencies have hurt Bradford throughout his career and those problems could give the team pause when considering a long-term deal for him.

NYJ - WR Brandon Marshall doesn't want Kaepernick

Source: New York Daily News - Amara Grautski

New York Jets WR Brandon Marshall said he doesn't want the team to acquire San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick and wants the team to re-sign impending free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. 'I don't want Kaepernick,' Marshall said on ESPN's 'First Take.' 'I think he's good. My guy's Fitz,' Marshall explained. 'It's nothing against Kaepernick, but what I'm saying is that I have my quarterbacks and I'm good.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fitzpatrick and the Jets are expected to discuss a contract extension in the coming weeks. Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan said he's 'like very much' to re-sign Fitzpatrick this offseason. Even if Fitzpatrick is not the QB of the future, he's likely the QB of the now for the Jets.

DAL - QB Tony Romo pauses surgery four weeks

    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (clavicle) will be re-evaluated in four weeks before making a final decision on surgery to his left collarbone, according to sources. Romo had a CT scan a week ago on the collarbone, which showed good bone growth.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Whether or not he needs surgery won't have much of an impact on his offseason. Regardless of whether or not he goes under the knife, Romo is likely to be very limited at OTAs and minicamp. The team needs him ready for training camp, and they need him to stay healthy during the regular season so they can make a playoff run.

WAS - WR Andre Roberts could be cap casualty

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins WR Andre Roberts is signed through the 2017 season with a cap hit of $5 million for 2016. Beat writer John Keim suggests the emergence of WR Jamison Crowder as the No. 1 slot receiver could mean Roberts is expendable. He has posted 46 receptions with two touchdowns in two seasons with Washington.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Roberts has always wanted a larger role, but it never came to fruition with Washington. We'll see if he can land somewhere else and impress enough to earn more of a chance.

Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said he doesn't anticipate any major changes coming to the Cowboys' offense next season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team doesn't need to make wholesale changes to the offense. They only need QB Tony Romo to stay healthy in order to make a run at the playoffs. If not, the team needs to find a better backup (Robert Griffin III?) behind Romo if (when?) he gets hurt again.

You're likely going to have to knock these guys out and pull them off the field. It's the Super Bowl, they'll play.

CAR - OLB Thomas Davis, DE Jared Allen on track

    Source: ESPN.com - David Newton

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis (forearm) and DE Jared Allen (foot) remain on track to play in Super Bowl 50 against the Denver Broncos after both practiced Wednesday, Feb. 3. Allen was limited, but the move was precautionary, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Davis was a full participant and wore a protective cast over his arm. Rivera said Davis will have his arm looked at by doctors again Friday, Feb. 5, but his full practice load was an indication he'll play.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sounds good for both guys and once you get them on the field it's going to be tough to get them out of the game. It's the Super Bowl of course.

TEN - Tennessee could draft Laremy Tunsil

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Ole Miss OT Laremy Tunsil has a good chance to be selected No. 1 overall in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans if the Titans end up keeping the pick, according to personnel executives.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Tunsil is considered the best left tackle in this draft class. In fact, he's got the making of a franchise left tackle who could protect QB Marcus Mariota for years. They are trying to trade the top pick, but if they can't find the right deal then Tunsil would make a great pick.

TB - RB Doug Martin wants to stay in Tampa Bay

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Curtis Crabtree

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Doug Martin said he wants to sign a new deal to stay with the team but would also play if he is given the franchise tag.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Martin had a bounce-back season in 2015 after two seasons set back by injury and inconsistency. We have a feeling the Bucs keep him around in 2016 and beyond. He'll be a key cog (again) in Dirk Koetter's offense.

PHI - Doug Pederson hints at QB change

    Source: CSNPhilly.com

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson listed finding a 'young quarterback' as one of the steps necessary for team to have success, which could mean QB Sam Bradford is not in the team's plans moving forward.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pederson has previously complimented Bradford, but what else is he supposed to say? At this time, Bradford's future with the team is up in the air. Bradford is a decent starter, but injury problems have plagued most of his career and that makes signing him to a long-term contract riskier.

PHI - RB DeMarco Murray committed to Eagles

    Source: ESPN.com

Updating previous reports, Philadelphia Eagles RB DeMarco Murray said he is committed to the Eagles despite rumors that there may be dissension between Murray and Philadelphia and despite a tweet by Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant telling Murray to return to the Cowboys.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Eagles have Murray under contract through 2019, and he's got a $7 million cap number in 2016. There's $13 million left in dead money on his contract according to Spotrac.com. Of course Murray is committed to the Eagles because he's getting paid...and he's getting more than he likely would from the open market.

CIN - CB Darqueze Dennard should be ready

Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Jim Owczarski

Cincinnati Bengals CB Darqueze Dennard (shoulder) should be ready for the start of training camp this offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Dennard is recovering from a torn labrum he suffered in late November. The second-year corner played a part-time role on defense, but he was a big contributor on special teams. Expect the team to limit him this offseason, and perhaps ease him back in at the start of camp.

DAL - WR Dez Bryant wants RB DeMarco Murray back

    Source: NFL.com - Chris Wesseling

Philadelphia Eagles RB DeMarco Murray may not return to Philadelphia Eagles next season, and Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant has already started recruiting Murray back to Dallas. The Cowboys are one of the teams included among those who might be interested in signing Murray.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Cowboys were the ninth ranked running offense in the league according to NFL.com, but they had to rotate in multiple running backs. Sure, the Cowboys would like to have Murray back but not at the price he's going to want.

NYG - WR Victor Cruz should fully recover

    Source: NJ.com - Jordan Raanan

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (calf) is dealing with a torn fascia in his calf -- a rare injury. He is still expected to make a full recovery and should avoid any long-term issues.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We heard this all season long, so we'll believe Cruz is back when we physically see him on the field. The Giants need to acquire another solid receiver to compliment Odell Beckham Jr in the event Cruz is either unable to start the 2016 season or gets hurt during it.

DAL - QB Tony Romo to have another scan

Source: The Dallas Morning News - David Moore

Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (clavicle) will undergo another CT scan at the end of February or in early March, at which point the best way to proceed will be reassessed. There will be two options for Romo. A plate could be attached over the collarbone to limit the potential for further injury. If the CT scan shows good enough bone growth, though, then a portion of the clavicle could be shaved off or removed. The second method would place less long-term stress on the collarbone. Romo is still expected to undergo surgery at a later time.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The expectation is that Romo will be ready to go and start next season but owner Jerry Jones was right to worry about improving the backup situations. Look for them to make a move, though the buzz is that they will not take a quarterback high in the draft. Sorry Carson Wentz fans!

NO - No talks for QB Drew Brees yet

Source: New Orleans Times-Picayune - Christopher Dabe

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees said any conversations with the Saints regarding a contract extension have not happened yet.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

At this point, as Sean Payton remains in New Orleans, we don't expect the team to move on from Brees. Ultimately, we think Brees has a bounce-back season after the two sides come to terms with a reduced rate for his services.

WAS - RB Alfred Morris probably gone

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris will be able to test free agency this offseason, according to team president Bruce Allen. If Morris is not offered a deal to his liking, then the Redskins may entertain re-signing Morris.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Well, Washington had better hope Matt Jones improves his ball security. Morris should be a nice fit for any number of offenses and should see a decent amount of interest. However, he also is unlikely to see any offers that will break the bank of any team--the free agent market is chock full of RB talent.

CLE - WR Travis Benjamin likely staying

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Zac Jackson

Cleveland Browns WR Travis Benjamin said he could get a deal done with the Browns before March. Furthermore, he spoke with new head coach Hue Jackson, who said he loves Benjamin's skill set and that 2016 will hopefully be a great season for the Browns.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Benjamin looks very good at times but getting banged up and a murky quarterback situation held him back. Right now the quarterback issue remains unsettled - until we see that change, Benjamin remains a low-end WR2 with upside.

NE - No surgery for TE Rob Gronkowski

Source: Boston Herald - Jeff Howe

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (knee, back) did not require surgery on his knee or back, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's a plus for Gronkowski and his knee. We expect him to be the top fantasy tight end again next year.

CAR - TE Greg Olsen excels on deep passes

    Source: ESPN Stats and Information

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen has 22 receptions on passes thrown between 15 and 30 yards downfield in 2015 (including playoffs), the most since New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski and former New Orleans Saints TE Jimmy Graham each had 21 in 2011.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Olsen is going to get a lot of attention from Denver this weekend but you can expect him to get his no matter what. Olsen is Cam Newton's biggest weapon, and if he's successful the Panthers should be as well.

WAS - QB Kirk Cousins negotiating

    Source: CSNWashington.com - Tarik El-Bashir

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins is engaged in discussions to re-sign with the Redskins.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cousins had a tremendous 2015 season but it's just one year. They have to pay him but would be wise to protect themselves in case this season was an outlier.

MIA - TE Jordan Cameron may require pay cut

Source: The Palm Beach Post - Andrew Abramson

Miami Dolphins TE Jordan Cameron may be asked to take a pay cut in 2016. Cameron has a $7.5 million salary with a $9.5 million salary cap hit next season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cameron wasn't the X-factor the Dolphins were looking for so trying to restructure his contract isn't a surprise. If he stays with the Dolphins, we'd be really excited by his upside and potential under new head coach Adam Gase.

DET - WR Calvin Johnson's longevity was in question

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson's (ankles) longevity and condition of his ankles was a concern for doctors, and the team told prospective coaches they were interviewing about it in 2014.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The questions will come now that (it seems) Johnson is hanging up his cleats. We still think Johnson has great years left, but having ankle issues would definitely limit his production going forward.

CAR - RB Mike Tolbert wants to return

Source: Charlotte Observer - David Scott

Carolina Panthers impending free-agent FB Mike Tolbert is hopeful Super Bowl 50 Sunday, Feb. 7, against the Denver Broncos is not his last with the team. 'We'll take of all the business aspects of my contract after the season. I would love to stay, but you never know what happens. We'll see,' Tolbert said Wednesday, Feb. 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Tolbert is a solid back but limited in overall ability. He's been useful in this offense though, so for the right price we imagine he'll be back.

GB - Uncertain if WR James Jones returns

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Rob Reischel

Green Bay Packers impending free-agent WR James Jones will be 32 this offseason, and typically general manager Ted Thompson avoids receivers of that advanced age. However, Jones played 1,205 out of 1,316 snaps (91.6 percent) while leading the team in receiving yardage (971) with 17.8 yards per reception. He is also a favorite of QB Aaron Rodgers.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones was one of the few receivers Aaron Rodgers could count on this past season, but with Jordy Nelson returning, the Packers would be better off promoting a younger guy.

GB - Fan fave RB John Kuhn to hit market?

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Rob Reischel

Green Bay Packers impending free-agent FB John Kuhn would like to play another year or two. While his blocking has been on the decline, and he is 33 years old, he is a favorite of QB Aaron Rodgers and head coach Mike McCarthy.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team brought on Aaron Ripkowski as an eventual replacement for Kuhn, but the leadership the veteran brings cannot be overlooked. The Packers will try to bring him back, but at the right price only.

GB - RB James Starks could seek job elsewhere

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Rob Reischel

Green Bay Packers impending free-agent RB James Starks is set to turn 30 later this month. While that is generally an age running backs see a decline, he has plenty of tread on the tires with just 555 carries in six NFL seasons. He might seek a chance at a No. 1 running back job elsewhere.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Starks is under the impression he can be a starting back, but thus far we haven't seen enough consistency to buy in. The market is a little flooded with Alfred Morris, Lamar Miller, Matt Forte, Chris Ivory and Doug Martin all potentially hitting the streets, so Starks is going to have to offer some added incentive — ice cream? free X-boxes? - in order to get a starting gig.

GB - RB Eddie Lacy well over playing weight

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Rob Reischel

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy was listed at 234 pounds during the season, but beat writer Rob Reischel says it is a good bet Lacy was at least 25 pound heavier than that. During his 61-yard run in the playoff against the Arizona Cardinals he took 12.02 seconds to complete the play.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Old news by now, but a concern. The Packers might have to get James Starks back or draft another running back to protect themselves from Lacy's appetite. That or keep him away from the cheese curds.

Wisconsin probably not the best place for Lacy. Too many temptations in all the beer, brats and cheese for him.
