NFL Player News - Week 5

    Courtesy of Footballguys.com

IND - Good sign for QB Andrew Luck for TNF

Source: The Indianapolis Star - Stephen Holder

Updating a previous report, Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck (shoulder) could be on target to play in the Week 5 game against the Houston Texans Thursday, Oct. 8, as the team released QB Josh Johnson. QB Matt Hasselbeck also said Monday, Oct. 5, that he does not expect to play Thursday, indicating Luck will be ready.

We'll know more Tuesday but so far so good.

DAL - RB Lance Dunbar out for season

    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Dallas Cowboys RB Lance Dunbar (knee) will miss the rest of the 2015 season because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered in Week 4. He scheduled to undergo surgery in the near future to repair the injury. Dunbar also suffered a partially torn medial collateral ligament, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Cowboys offense is dealt another blow here. Dunbar was working well as a receiver and explosive change-of-pace back, and now the team will have to turn to Darren McFadden in that role. Joseph Randle is still the lead back, and we could see more of Christine Michael going forward.

WAS - TE Jordan Reed's head injury a concern

    Source: NFL.com

Washington Redskins TE Jordan Reed's (concussion, knee, ankle) head injury is a real concern, according to head coach Jay Gruden. Reed has a long history of head injuries dating back to college and mixed the last six games in 2013 after suffering two concussions in three weeks. Reed hasn't played more than 11 games in a single season. He has 24 catches for 278 yards and a touchdown after four games and is averaging a career-high 11.6 yards per catch.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We just hope his long-term health is okay. Reed is a talented player, but his body is breaking down. He came out of college a few years ago with injury concerns, and that hasn't changed.

SD - TE Antonio Gates will play in Week 5

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Tom Krasovic

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates is in great shape and will be play in the Week 5 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to head coach Mike McCoy.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He'll play, but his role is unclear at this moment. We'll have to see how the playing time and targets shake out between Gates and Ladarius Green going forward.

IND - RB Frank Gore held out Monday

    Source: Colts.com

Indianapolis Colts RB Frank Gore (foot) did not take part in practice Monday, Oct. 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Colts have a short week as they play the Texans on Thursday night in Week 5. This could just be Gore getting some veteran rest.

IND - TE Dwayne Allen a full participant

    Source: Colts.com

Indianapolis Colts TE Dwayne Allen (ankle) was a full participant in practice Monday, Oct. 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's a good sign for his availability. The Colts are playing on Thursday night against the Texans, and it would be a boost for the offense to get Allen back.

HOU - QB Ryan Mallett fully participates Monday

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett (chest) fully participated in the team's walkthrough Monday, Oct. 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bill O'Brien says that Mallett is the starter, even though he was benched in the Atlanta game for Brian Hoyer. We're expecting a quick, although probably not permanent, hook for Mallett if he struggles against the Colts.

HOU - RB Arian Foster limited Monday

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (groin) was limited during the team's walkthrough Monday, Oct. 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's a short week for Foster and the Texans, so expect him to be limited up until Thursday. All indications point to Foster playing in Week 5 after making his season debut against the Falcons in Week 4.

HOU - WR Cecil Shorts sits Monday

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans WR Cecil Shorts (shoulder) did not participate in the team's walkthrough Monday, Oct. 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We should see increased snaps for rookie Keith Mumphery this week with a couple of Texans wide receivers banged up. Last week against the Falcons, Mumphery played a season-high 55 snaps. He finished the game with four catches for 56 yards. Fellow rookie Jaelen Strong might also be active for the first time this year on Thursday night game against the Colts.

HOU - WR Nate Washington sits out

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans WR Nate Washington (hamstring) did not participate in the team's walkthrough Monday, Oct. 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With Washington and Cecil Shorts III banged up, it could lead to a larger opportunity for rookies Keith Mumphery and Jaelen Strong.

SEA - RB Marshawn Lynch on track for Week 5

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Seattle Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch (hamstring) was able to run during pregame warmups Monday, Oct. 5, and appears to have a good chance to play in the Week 5 game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for the Seahawks here. Rookie Thomas Rawls will be filling in for Lynch on Monday night against the Lions.

SD - TE Ladarius Green expected to have role

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken

San Diego Chargers TE Ladarius Green has played well early in the season and should continue to have a role in the offense even though TE Antonio Gates is receiving from his suspension, according to QB Philip Rivers.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That was also the word before the news about Gates' suspension was announced. Gates had said earlier this year that his role would be smaller in 2015. We'll see if Green can maintain his fantasy value even with Gates back. After four weeks, Green has scored the 10th-most fantasy points of tight ends in PPR leagues.

BAL - TE Crockett Gillmore could play

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens TE Crockett Gillmore (calf) has a chance to play in the Week 5 game against the Cleveland Browns, according to head coach John Harbaugh.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Getting Gillmore back would be a boost to the offense--especially with WR Steve Smith Sr. banged up. Check back on Gillmore's practice status later in the week.

PIT - WR Markus Wheaton dealing with injury

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Markus Wheaton (ankle) suffered an ankle sprain in the team's Week 4 game, but the injury is considered minor, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Regardless of the injury, Wheaton just hasn't looked good this year. He does not have good chemistry with QB Ben Roethlisberger, and in Week 4 against the Ravens he played only 18 snaps before getting hurt. Even when he comes back healthy, Wheaton should lose out on snaps and targets to Martavis Bryant. The Steelers are getting Bryant back from his four-game suspension for their Week 5 contest against the Chargers on Monday Night Football.

BUF - No update on RB LeSean McCoy

Source: The Buffalo News - Jay Skurski

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy (hamstring) did not play in Week 4, and his status for the Week 5 game against the Tennessee Titans is uncertain at this point, according to head coach Rex Ryan.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Check back later in the week. The word is that McCoy may miss a few more weeks with this hamstring injury in order to get fully healthy. McCoy recently underwent an MRI which showed a new tear in his hamstring. The Bills have a bye in Week 8, and Karlos Williams may be the team's lead back up to that point.

BUF - WR Sammy Watkins may miss another game

Source: The Buffalo News - Jay Skurski

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins' (calf) status for the Week 5 game against the Tennessee Titans is uncertain at this point, according to head coach Rex Ryan. 'He looked good and he's moving around decent, so hopefully that's a good sign, but I'm certainly not the guy who will decide that,' Ryan said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We saw on Sunday just how important Watkins is to the team's offense. Without him on the field, defenses play Tyrod Taylor and the Bills receivers differently. Check back to see if Watkins can practice later in the week.

ATL - RB Tevin Coleman back Wednesday?

    Source: ESPN.com - Vaughn McClure

Updating a previous report, Atlanta Falcons RB Tevin Coleman (ribs) could return to practice Wednesday, Oct. 7, according to head coach Dan Quinn.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Coleman may return this week, but he won't come back as the starter. Devonta Freeman has taken the league by storm over the last two weeks with six rushing touchdowns during that time. He's clearly the starter, and Coleman will have to work his way back as a part-time player.

Colts | Indy plans to have Andrew Luck
Updating an earlier report, Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck (shoulder) is expected by the team to be under center Thursday, Oct. 8, against the Houston Texans. His shoulder injury isn't viewed as a long-term injury.

Footballguys view: The Colts were able to get the win (barely) against the Jaguars in Week 3. Getting Luck back would be a boost for the offense. Watch to see what his practice status is for a short week.

    Wednesday Update

SEA - RB Fred Jackson with high ankle sprain

Source: The Seattle Times - Bob Condotta

Seattle Seahawks RB Fred Jackson (ankle) is dealing with a high ankle sprain, according to head coach Pete Carroll.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bad news for the old veteran here. High ankle sprains are known to linger if not given plenty of time to heal. In the meantime, Thomas Rawls should continue as the primary backup behind Marshawn Lynch.

BUF - RB Karlos Williams day-to-day

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Rodak

Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills RB Karlos Williams (concussion) is listed as day-to-day and must be cleared from the NFL-mandated concussion protocol before he can play in Week 5 against the Tennessee Titans.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bills may turn to Anthony Dixon and Cierre Wood if both Williams and RB LeSean McCoy (hamstring) cannot play this weekend against the Titans. General manager Doug Whaley said the team could sign another runner this week, and they could re-sign RB Bryce Brown, who was released last month.

IND - QB Andrew Luck takes majority of snaps

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Wells

Updating a previous report, Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck (shoulder) took the majority of snaps in practice Tuesday, Oct. 6, giving the indication that he will play in Week 5 against the Houston Texans Thursday, Oct. 8.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He should be able to go on Thursday night against the Texans. However, we have him as a low-end QB1 as he deals with this injury. Luck was technically 'limited' Tuesday, according to head coach Chuck Pagano. It was the first time that Pagano admitted that Luck threw in practice, and Luck doesn't expect to be limited if he starts.

BAL - WR Steve Smith could play?

Source: The Baltimore Sun - Jeff Zrebiec

Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith (back) is day to day and hasn't been ruled out for Week 5, according to WR Kamar Aiken.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're pretty sure that won't be Aiken's call. Fantasy owners need to monitor this situation. Smith could easily miss this contest, so don't count of him if you've got him on your roster. The Ravens play at home against the Browns on Sunday.

HOU - RB Arian Foster limited Tuesday

    Source: HoustonTexans.com

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (groin) was limited in practice Tuesday, Oct. 6.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Foster played last week, but he didn't do much against the Falcons in Week 4. Now that he's back, fantasy owners should at least trust him as a RB2/flex play in Week 5 against the Indianapolis Colts.

    ATL - RB Devonta Freeman's numbers eye-popping

    Source: ESPN.com

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman has seven rushing touchdowns in the last three weeks. No Falcons running back had scored more than six touchdowns in a season since 2012.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Eye-popping numbers like Toecutter in Mad Max. Freeman has been sensational over the last two games as the starting back. Earlier this year he was coming back from a hamstring injury and splitting time with rookie Tevin Coleman. When Coleman went down with a rib injury, Freeman took over and has not looked back. He's a set-it-and-forget-it RB1 for fantasy owners.

HOU - WR Cecil Shorts not at practice

    Source: HoustonTexans.com

Houston Texans WR Cecil Shorts (shoulder) did not participate in practice Tuesday, Oct. 6.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Shorts may not play on Thursday night against the Colts. Rookie Keith Mumphery could see more action if Shorts is inactive due to this injury.

CIN - QB Andy Dalton turning a corner?

    Source: ESPN.com

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton is 4-0 to start the year and is averaging more than 10 yards per pass attempt.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Dalton's 9.19 air yards per passing attempt ranks 9th-highest in the league. A healthy TE Tyler Eifert and WR Marvin Jones have made a huge difference for Dalton. With weapons like those two plus WR A.J. Green, WR Mohammed Sanu and RB Gio Bernard, this passing game has been quite robust over the first four games of the year.

SD - QB Philip Rivers leads in yardage

    Source: ESPN.com

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers leads the league in passing yards with 1,248 through four games and owns a completion percentage of 70.7.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rivers is getting it done with shorter passes. His 6.11 air yards per passing attempt ranks 32nd in the league. However, his 7.57 yards after the catch per completion average is 1st in the NFL. His average time before pass of 2.09 seconds ranks 2nd in the NFL behind only Tom Brady (2.04).

HOU - No practice for WR Nate Washington

    Source: HoustonTexans.com

Houston Texans WR Nate Washington (hamstring) missed practice Tuesday, Oct. 6.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's a short week for the Texans, so we may not see Washington on the field on Thursday night against the Colts. If he's inactive, then perhaps rookie wide receiver Jaelen Strong could be on the field for the first time this season.

HOU - QB Ryan Mallett has full practice
    Source: HoustonTexans.com
Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett (chest) had another full practice Tuesday, Oct. 6.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mallett is back in the starting lineup for the Texans after getting benched for Brian Hoyer last week against the Falcons. We're expecting the team to have a quick hook for Mallett if (when?) he struggles against the Colts.

IND - RB Frank Gore returns to practice field

    Source: Colts.com

Indianapolis Colts RB Frank Gore (foot) practiced in full Tuesday, Oct. 6, after sitting out Monday, Oct. 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gore should be ready to go against the Texans on Thursday night. After four weeks of action, the Texans' rush defense ranks 22nd in the league averaging 115.25 rushing yards allowed per game. Consider Gore a RB2 or flex play in Week 5.

IND - TE Dwayne Allen a full participant

    Source: Colts.com

Indianapolis Colts TE Dwayne Allen (ankle) practiced in full for the second straight day Tuesday, Oct. 6.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a good sign for Allen's availability on Thursday night against the Texans. Fantasy owners should consider him a low-end TE2 with upside if he plays.

JAX - WR Allen Robinson leads in YPC

    Source: NFL

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Allen Robinson is tops in the NFL with 22.0 yards per catch through the first four weeks of the season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Robinson has done a fine job of taking the top off the defenses he's faced in 2015. Second-year QB Blake Bortles has clearly found a favorite target, and he has no fear when throwing to Robinson deep. His air yards per target average is 17.7 (3rd-highest in the league), so you can see the type of routes he's featured on each week.

NYJ - WR Devin Smith's role increasing

    Source: NFL.com - Chris Wesseling

New York Jets WR Devin Smith played 83% of the offensive snaps in his Week 3 debut and played more snaps than WR Eric Decker (52 to 46) in Week 4 in London against the Miami Dolphins.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll see if this trend continues. Smith can make big plays happen downfield because of his deep speed. However, he was known in college for getting banged up often and dropping too many easy passes. We'll see if Smith can improve his game while getting more playing time as a pro.

ATL - WR Roddy White keeping his cool

Source: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - D. Orlando Ledbetter

Atlanta Falcons WR Roddy White said there's nothing to get mad about in regards to his slow start this season. White said all he can do is run the routes he's supposed to run and do his job. He added that he knows he'll get his chances because of how defenses will play against their offense. White's streak of 130 games with a catch ended in Week 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Keeping his cool? The last White story we commented on had him dropping a couple of "F-bombs" due to his decreased role on offense. We'll see if the team makes an emphasis on getting him the ball in Week 5 against Washington.

MIN - WR Charles Johnson leaves early

    Source: ESPN.com - Ben Goessling

Minnesota Vikings WR Charles Johnson (ribs) left practice after the team stretch Tuesday, Oct. 6.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Fantasy owners have been disappointed by Johnson this year, and most have moved on. Johnson did not play in Week 4 against the Denver Broncos, and even when healthy this offense is all about RB Adrian Peterson and a limited passing attack...unless they need to play catch-up football.

BUF - Buffalo hoping WR Sammy Watkins returns

    Source: NFL.com - Conor Orr

Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley said WR Sammy Watkins (calf) will play in Week 5 against the Tennessee Titans 'fingers crossed.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners should not bet on Whaley's crossed fingers. Instead, try to find different options if you have fantasy assets from the Bills offense. Without Watkins on the field, there's a trickle-down effect because defenses play QB Tyrod Taylor a lot differently. This leads to struggles on the ground and through the air.

BUF - RB Dan Herron signs with Bills

Source: WGR Sports Radio 550 - Joe Buscaglia

Free-agent RB Dan Herron (Colts) was signed by the Buffalo Bills Tuesday, Oct. 6. TE MarQueis Gray (forearm) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bills needed to do something with both LeSean McCoy (hamstring) and Karlos Williams (concussion) banged up. Herron is a seasoned veteran who can serve as a reserve player behind likely Week 5 starter Anthony Dixon.

NYG - TE Daniel Fells has MRSA

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

New York Giants TE Daniel Fells (ankle) had surgery this week on his ankle and was diagnosed with MRSA, which is a very serious condition.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This infection is contagious and can be fatal. The Giants are taking precautions to make sure no other player has the infection. They have thoroughly scrubbed the locker room, training room, and all meeting rooms.

CLE - CB Joe Haden had broken finger

    Source: ESPN.com

Cleveland Browns CB Joe Haden (finger, ribs) was inactive in Week 4 against the San Diego Chargers with a broken right ring finger after he was initially listed as probable on the injury report. He decided not to play after testing his hand in pregame warmups. CB Pierre Desir started in Haden's place.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Haden's status for Week 5 against the Baltimore Ravens is unknown. 'Hopefully Joe will get more comfortable with the finger injury so we can get him back out there,' head coach Mike Pettine said.

It seems Luck news is getting bleaker.

Colts | Andrew Luck listed as questionable Wed Oct 7, 01:45 PM Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck (shoulder) is listed as questionable for Week 5 against the Houston Texans.

    Footballguys view
: You have to wonder - and worry - about whether Luck is hurrying or being hurried back to action. The Colts are capital 'D' desperate right now, but that doesn't mean they should have him back before he's ready. They've taken the long term view until now, so we have to give them the benefit of the doubt. We worry a bit though. If he plays, he should be a solid start against the Houston Texans, who were just trounced by Matt Ryan and the Atlanta offense. We have him as a low-end QB1, but know that there is the risk he isn't 100 percent or looks as bad as he did prior to his injury, so keep that in mind.

    Thursday Update

SEA - RB Marshawn Lynch remains day-to-day
    Source: NFL.com - Dan Hanzus
Seattle Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch (hamstring) remains day-to-day with a hamstring injury Wednesday, Oct. 7, according to head coach Pete Carroll. The Seahawks won't have a clear idea of whether he'll be available for Game 5 against the Cincinnati Bengals until later this week.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Keep an eye on this, and it will impact whether he remains an RB2 as we have him currently ranked. Thomas Rawls was disappointing last week and the offensive line continues to be a huge issue for the whole backfield, including Lynch.

HOU - RB Arian Foster will play against Colts

    Source: NFL

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (groin) was limited in practice Wednesday, Oct. 7, but is probable for Week 5 against the Indianapolis Colts Thursday, Oct. 8.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That sigh of relief was really big because 1) everything is bigger in Texas and 2) with Ryan Mallett or Brian Hoyer under center, a firm run game is needed. With Foster going, we expect decent RB1 production from him.

SEA - RB Fred Jackson not ruled out

    Source: NFL.com - Dan Hanzus

Seattle Seahawks RB Fred Jackson (ankle) could play in Week 5 against the Cincinnati Bengals, and head coach Pete Carroll is hopeful that the running back will play. RB Thomas Rawls will likely be a three-down back this weekend if both Jackson and RB Marshawn Lynch (hamstring) don't play.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rawls was uninspiring behind a poor offensive line and unless Marshawn Lynch is playing, there isn't much upside here. It could be even tougher against a good Cincinnati defense, so Rawls is likely to be a low-end RB4 at best even if he gets all the carries.

ATL - RB Tevin Coleman returns

    Source: AtlantaFalcons.com

Atlanta Falcons RB Tevin Coleman (ribs) returned to practice on a limited basis Wednesday, Oct. 7.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He's going to have to hang out and wait for Devonta Freeman to cool off though and we don't expect that this week as we have Freeman as a very nice RB1 play.

ATL - WR Julio Jones limited Wednesday

    Source: AtlantaFalcons.com

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones (toe, hamstring) was limited in practice Wednesday, Oct. 7.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Toe, Shmoe. Run Julio Jones out there as the WR1 we all know he will be. Sure, he under-performed last week even while the Falcons were destroying the Texans, but the team will get back to him and his toe should be fine.

BAL - WR Steve Smith week-to-week

    Source: BaltimoreRavens.com - Ryan Mink

Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith (back) is week-to-week with microfractures in his back, but he hasn't been ruled out for Week 5 against the Cleveland Browns yet, according to head coach John Harbaugh. Harbaugh also said Smith won't need surgery and that his injury is a matter of pain tolerance. Smith won't be back on the field until he proves he can 'really function, protect himself, play hard and fast.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smith might want to 'ice up, son' if he's going to get out there, though the 'ice' might really be a shot for pain. We can't even function when we've been lifting boxes around the Footballguys offices, how can he play with microfractures on his back? He's Steve FREAKING Smith, that's how. That said, we assume he will not be playing, as Smith is tough but also smart. Keep an eye on this but assume you will have to go elsewhere for this weekend.

IND - RB Frank Gore probable Thursday

    Source: USA TODAY Fantasy Sports

Indianapolis Colts RB Frank Gore (foot) is probable for Week 5 against the Houston Texans Thursday, Oct. 8.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gore's a bit banged up and the offense is sputtering most weeks, but we still think he'll be ready to go Thursday night and be worthy of an RB2 ranking.

DEN - RB C.J. Anderson still the starter

Source: The Denver Post - Troy E. Renck

Denver Broncos RB C.J. Anderson is still considered the starting running back by head coach Gary Kubiak, but RB Ronnie Hillman has 'earned the right' to see more chances. The running game should continue to improve as the offensive line adapts and improves, in the opinion of The Denver Post's Troy E. Renck. Both Anderson and Hillman will continue to be used, and whichever has the hot hand in a particular game will likely end up with a few more carries. Both Anderson and Hillman had 11 carries each in Week 4 against the Minnesota Vikings.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is all well and good but we know that being the starter is no guarantee of being the guy with the most carries. Right now we feel Hillman will be the better bet, as he has just looked better with his chances. For us, Hillman is a borderline RB2/RB3 in PPR leagues while Anderson is stuck as an RB4 and desperation flex.

WAS - WR DeSean Jackson could play

Source: The Washington Post - Liz Clarke

Washington Redskins WR DeSean Jackson (hamstring) said playing this week against the Atlanta Falcons is a possibility. Jackson said as long as he improves every day, it's possible that he'll play, although head coach Jay Gruden isn't pushing him to make a premature return. Jackson had a limited practice Wednesday, Oct. 7.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's great that he wants to be on the field, but it makes no sense to rush it. We'll wait and watch but have no expectation he will be ready to go come Sunday morning.

CHI - WR Alshon Jeffery has limited practice

    Source: NFL

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery (hamstring) was limited in practice Wednesday, Oct. 7.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If Jeffery can play, we're cautiously optimistic that he can produce decent numbers, though how limited he might be is a question. Right now he's slotted as a nice WR3 play, but if he looks better over the next few days of practice, he might rise up a little.

OAK - WR Michael Crabtree sits out

    Source: Raiders.com

Oakland Raiders WR Michael Crabtree (ankle) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 7.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Crabtree has been surprisingly solid for the team that spurned him for Darrius Heyward-Bey in 2009. That said, this is a nasty matchup, against one of the better corner tandems in the NFL. We see him as a solid WR4 with limited upside because of that.

NO - WR Brandin Cooks limited Wednesday

    Source: NFL

New Orleans Saints WR Brandin Cooks (ankle) was limited in practice Wednesday, Oct. 7.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Saints spread the touches around, so Cooks is limited by scheme and opportunity, which is too bad. It holds his ceiling to low-end WR3 for the most part, far below what we hoped for this year with Jimmy Graham gone.

ARI - RB Andre Ellington limited Wednesday

    Source: AZCardinals.com

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington (knee) was limited in practice Wednesday, Oct. 7.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With Chris Johnson running well, they won't rush Ellington back. And when they do, will they really give him a ton to do? If he plays this week, he's no better than a flex/RB4 type player and not worth more than a long shot spot.

HOU - QB Ryan Mallett should play

    Source: HoustonTexans.com

Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett (chest) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Oct. 7, and is listed as probable for the Week 5 game against the Indianapolis Colts.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mallett or Brian Hoyer - neither should be in your lineup. Avoid this mess because it will only make you sad and cost you fantasy points.

WAS - TE Jordan Reed misses practice

    Source: Redskins.com

Washington Redskins TE Jordan Reed (concussion, knee, ankle) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 7.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Reed is the only tight end worth playing there - Derek Carrier and Anthony McCoy shouldn't even be on fantasy rosters, forget in lineups - so until he returns don't look to Washington for tight end help in fantasy.

HOU - RB Jonathan Grimes will not play

    Source: HoustonTexans.com

Houston Texans RB Jonathan Grimes (hamstring) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 7, and has been ruled out for the Week 5 game against the Indianapolis Colts.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hopefully Arian Foster will have more work this week, as we see him with the potential to be a great RB1 this week in fantasy. Alfred Blue should be back on your bench unless Foster gets hurt again.

HOU - WR Nate Washington, WR Cecil Shorts ruled out

    Source: HoustonTexans.com

Houston Texans WR Nate Washington (hamstring) and WR Cecil Shorts (shoulder) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 7, and have been ruled out for the Week 5 game against the Indianapolis Colts.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If it isn't DeAndre Hopkins (a WR1 this week, by the way) then it isn't worth playing in this passing offense.

JAX - TE Julius Thomas limited Wednesday

    Source: Jaguars.com

Updating previous reports, Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (hand) was limited during practice Wednesday, Oct. 7.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We still don't know if he'll be playing or not, though we lean towards not this week. If he was dropped in a league you play in, snap him up as he will be a big part of this offense when he returns.

SD - TE Antonio Gates lost weight

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Tom Krasovic

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates said he lost weight recently in order to give himself the best chance to avoid injuries as he gets back into football shape.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gates was banged up last year and we were hoping he could avoid that this year. Coming back from a suspension, we'll see quickly how ready to go he is and how durable. We see him as a solid TE1 this week against the Steelers.

JAX - WR Allen Hurns, WR Marqise Lee sit out

    Source: Jaguars.com

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Allen Hurns (ankle, thigh) and WR Marqise Lee (hamstring) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 7.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lee is Lee — always hurt —so that's not a cause for concern. Hurns, on the other hand, has been a great fantasy producer (and cheap in Daily circles) with Allen Robinson getting the attention as the No. 1, so losing him to an injury would be tough. That said, we have two more practices to go, and if he plays, we see him as a really good WR3.

DET - RB Joique Bell doesn't practice

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions RB Joique Bell (ankle) did not practice Wednesday, Oct. 7.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Ameer Abdullah has pretty much made Bell irrelevant at this point. Abdullah is a useful RB3 with some upside, while Theo Riddick's receiving ability makes him a hail mary and an RB5.

CHI - WR Eddie Royal misses practice

Source: Chicago Bears Radio Network - Zach Zaidman

Chicago Bears WR Eddie Royal (ankle) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 7.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With Alshon Jeffery limited in practice still, there aren't a lot of options for Jay Cutler, though we all hold out hope Jeffery will be able to play against Kansas City. If Royal plays, we expect no better than WR4 numbers, while if Jeffery can get going, he might be worth a WR3 (until we see he is back to full health). All this does make us love Martellus Bennett, who we see as one of the best TE1 plays in fantasy this week.

IND - TE Dwayne Allen probable Thursday

Source: The Indianapolis Star - Zak Keefer

Indianapolis Colts TE Dwayne Allen (ankle) is listed as probable for Week 5 against the Houston Texans.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Allen hasn't been playing for several weeks, and your better bet in this offense is Coby Fleener. Allen is just a TE4 at best until he proves healthy and effective.

BUF - WR Sammy Watkins not ruled out
    Source: BuffaloBills.com - Chris Brown
Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (calf) is not being ruled out for Week 5 against the Tennessee Titans despite missing practice Wednesday, Oct. 7, according to head coach Rex Ryan.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Ryan has no idea when Watkins will return, so you have better be thinking of alternatives. At least it's an early game and you'll have alternatives if you have to wait until game time.

    Friday Update

BAL - WR Steve Smith won't play this weekend

    Source: NFL.com - Marc Sessler

Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith (back) did not practice again Thursday, Oct. 8, and he will not play in Week 5 against the Cleveland Browns.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We didn't expect him to given he has microfractures in his back. We aren't doctors (well, two of us are) but we did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night and our diagnoses is that this injury would 'hurt a lot.' Along with that quality diagnosis (check with Jene Bramel for actual medical information) we suggest you look at Kamar Aiken as a borderline WR3/WR4 as he has been productive and will get Smith's targets.

NO - WR Brandin Cooks practices in full

    Source: NFL

New Orleans Saints WR Brandin Cooks (ankle) fully participated in practice Thursday, Oct. 8.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We see Cooks as a low-end WR2 or flex play. He's been disappointing to this point in the season, and many of you out there likely have a better option.

CIN - RB Jeremy Hill limited Thursday

    Source: NFL

Cincinnati Bengals RB Jeremy Hill (knee) was a limited participant in practice Thursday, Oct. 8.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Keep an eye on this situation. Hill is working in a RBBC with Gio Bernard, and we prefer Bernard this week in an interesting matchup against the Seahawks.

BUF - WR Percy Harvin limited

    Source: NFL

Buffalo Bills WR Percy Harvin (hip) was a full participant in practice Thursday, Oct. 8.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If Sammy Watkins can play against the Titans, then we feel better about Harvin's fantasy upside. Stay tuned for Friday's practice report.

PIT - QB Ben Roethlisberger making progress

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (knee) was able to jog off the practice field Thursday, Oct. 8, a sign that he's making good progress from the sprained left medial collateral ligament and bone bruise in his knee. Roethlisberger will not be able to play in Week 5 against the San Diego Chargers.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Great news for the Steelers here. He hasn't had any setbacks since suffering the injury 11 days ago, though. Roethlisberger said doctors are pleased with his progress but there remains no timetable for his return, and he's week-to-week.

Watkins may not be able to play against the Titans this week. Check back to see if he can practice on Friday, and know that if he misses the game then guys like Percy Harvin and Robert Woods will be asked to do more.

The veteran is banged up, but we love him as a "what the heck" flex this week against the Chiefs if he plays.

BUF - RB Dan Herron could see significant work

Source: The Buffalo News - Tyler Dunne

Buffalo Bills RB Anthony Dixon will start in Week 5 against the Tennessee Titans, but RB Dan Herron could see more carries than Dixon in the game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners should consider Dixon a RB3 and Herron more of a desperation flex.

PIT - WR Markus Wheaton a full participant

    Source: Steelers.com

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Markus Wheaton (ankle) practiced in full Thursday, Oct. 8.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Awesome, and it doesn't really matter. Wheaton has been inconsistent no matter who is behind center for the Steelers. With Martavis Bryant back from suspension, Wheaton should do even less.

Cleveland Browns RB Duke Johnson (ankle) was a full participant in practice Thursday, Oct. 8.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We have our fingers crossed that Mike Pettine and company continue to use Duke Johnson more going forward. The rookie is a fantastic receiver out of the backfield, and he can give the offense some spark.

DET - RB Joique Bell out again

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions RB Joique Bell (ankle) missed practice for the second straight day Thursday, Oct. 8, and is unlikely to play in Week 5 against the Arizona Cardinals.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

ATL - TE Jacob Tamme not limited Thursday

Atlanta Falcons TE Jacob Tamme (concussion) fully participated in practice Thursday, Oct. 8.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ever since Tony Gonzalez left, the tight end position in Atlanta has not been productive. The return of Tamme will not alter that, so look elsewhere.

ATL - WR Roddy White takes part in practice

    Source: AtlantaFalcons.com

Correcting a previous report, Atlanta Falcons WR Roddy White (non-injury) fully participated in practice Thursday, Oct. 8. White did miss practice Wednesday, Oct. 7, because of a personal matter.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

White is definitely behind Leonard Hankerson in the pecking order right now, though the team has promised to up his targets. We'll believe it when we see it though. Hankerson is a solid WR3, but White remains a distant WR6 at best until we see improvement.

BAL - TE Crockett Gillmore sits out

    Source: NFL.com - Marc Sessler

Baltimore Ravens TE Crockett Gillmore (calf) missed practice again Thursday, Oct. 8.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Looks a lot like Gillmore might be sidelined this week, but Maxx Williams and Nick Boyle will likely split starters duties, meaning they will both negate each other's value. Either one is worth a hail mary as a TE3 or so, but it's a risky bet.

CHI - WR Alshon Jeffery remains limited

    Source: NFL.com - Marc Sessler

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery (hamstring) was limited in practice for the second straight day Thursday, Oct. 8.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're hoping he will play and cautiously optimistic for his production if he does, but we've slotted him as a WR3 because of the injury and a tough Kansas City defense.

WAS - RB Matt Jones not in doghouse

    Source: CSNWashington.com - Rich Tandler

Washington Redskins RB Matt Jones is not in head coach Jay Gruden's doghouse after a crucial goal-line fumble in Week 3 against the New York Giants. 'He's never lost my trust (because of fumbles). A couple of weeks ago it was Alfred (Morris) who was in my doghouse and he's not. It's just the way it works out with the handoffs and the carries. I like both of those guys.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We have no idea what to believe when it comes to Gruden, as he consistently does things nobody understands. What is clear to us is that this is a full blown running back committee, with Alfred Morris, Jones and Chris Thompson. Thompson's receiving ability gives him the nod as the 'best' option, though as a mid-range RB3. Jones and Morris are both RB4s at best right now.

NE - RB Dion Lewis signs extension

    Source: ESPN.com - Field Yates

New England Patriots RB Dion Lewis signed a two-year extension through the 2017 season Thursday, Oct. 8. Lewis has $800,000 salaries in 2016 and 2017 and received a $600,000 signing bonus. He can earn $1.8 million in incentives in 2016-17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lewis has been having a very good season and should see plenty of work this week against Dallas. We see him as a nice RB1 play, which given his price in daily fantasy, makes him a tremendous value. Despite our hopes for Lewis, we expect LeGarrette Blount to put up some nice numbers as well and function as a decent RB2. The Patriots coule get out in front this week and then it will be time to grind the clock.

It could be a few weeks for McCoy to get right and even when he does, hamstring injuries are tricky things. Meanwhile, Williams should be good to go next week and has a slight chance of playing if he can practice Friday. If he plays, he's a solid RB2, with RB1 upside. If he's out, Anthony Dixon will play and has RB2 value.

    Saturday Update

SEA - RB Marshawn Lynch ruled out

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Seattle Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch (hamstring) has been ruled out for the Week 5 game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With Fred Jackson battling an ankle injury, we should see Thomas Rawls as the lead back for the Seahawks as they travel to play the Bengals. We like Rawls as a low-end RB2/flex play in Week 5.

HOU - QB Brian Hoyer named starter again

    Source: NFL.com - Marc Sessler

Houston Texans QB Brian Hoyer will start against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 6, head coach Bill O'Brien announced Friday, Oct. 9. Hoyer went 24-for-31 for 312 yards, two touchdowns and a late interception against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 5 Thursday, Oct. 8, while replacing QB Ryan Mallett.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

O'Brien going back to Hoyer means that Mallett and his sad face are back on the bench. The Texans have a bad QB situation, but DeAndre Hopkins is still producing through the air. Going forward, we only trust Hopkins and Arian Foster as startable players for your fantasy team.

ATL - WR Julio Jones listed as questionable

    Source: NFL.com

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones (toe, hamstring) practiced on a limited basis Friday, Oct. 9, and is questionable for Week 5 against the Washington Redskins.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A limited practice isn't exactly what we wanted to see on Friday. However, we still expect Jones to play and shine for the Falcons offense. Start him as you normally would at his current WR1 status.

SEA - RB Fred Jackson listed as questionable

Source: CBSSports.com - Jason La Canfora

Seattle Seahawks RB Fred Jackson (ankle) has made progress during the week and is listed as questionable for the Week 5 game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Jackson may be able to play in the game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We know that Marshawn Lynch is out for the game against the Bengals. Jackson is a bit banged up, so that makes rookie Thomas Rawls as the team's lead back. Rawls is a low-end RB2 while Jackson is more of a desperation flex play in Week 5.

NYG - WR Victor Cruz ruled out

    Source: NFL.com

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (calf) has been ruled out for Week 5 against the San Francisco 49ers.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Nobody should be surprised here. Cruz isn't ready to go yet, and it may be a couple of more weeks. With him out, we'll see Dwayne Harris as the team's slot receiver. We like Harris as a "punt play" in DFS and a "what the heck" flex in traditional leagues.

BUF - WR Sammy Watkins to test injury Sunday

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Rodak

Updating previous reports, Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (calf) will test his injury before the Week 5 game against the Tennessee Titans Sunday, Oct. 11, and doctors will make the final decision on whether he plays.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're not expecting him to play, and there will be an impact on the coverage guys like Percy Harvin and Robert Woods gets on Sunday against the Titans. Watkins is listed as questionable and said he could probably play in an emergency.

BAL - No timetable for TE Dennis Pitta

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens TE Dennis Pitta (hip) has been working out, but it is not known if he will be able to play when he is eligible to activated from the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list, according to head coach John Harbaugh.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Most felt this injury could be career-threatening. Pitta can start participating in practice as soon as Monday, Oct. 19. We'll wait and see here.

MIA - QB Ryan Tannehill unhappy with teammates

Source: NFL Network - Albert Breer

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill was unhappy with some of his defensive teammates during practice last week because they were going after the ball during a drill when the defense was supposed to avoid making plays on the ball. Tannehill went after CB Tony Lippett after Lippett intercepted a pass during the drill, which angered some of the other defensive players.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners are unhappy with Tannehill. He needs to turn things around or else he's going to be a permanent fixture on benches across fantasy football. Tannehill's future with the team may be in question since the team has opportunities to release him after the 2016 season because of clauses he has the contract he signed this past offseason.

PIT - WR Martavis Bryant's status uncertain

    Source: WDVE - Mike Prisuta

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant has practiced only once this week, and QB Michael Vick said he is a little concerned about Bryant's availability for the Week 5 game against the San Diego Chargers.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Keep an eye on this situation. We like Bryant as a "what the heck" flex this week if he plays on Monday night against the Chargers.

BAL - Prime matchup for RB Justin Forsett

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens RB Justin Forsett had 119 yards the last time he faced the Cleveland Browns, and Baltimore has averaged 144 yards rushing against Cleveland since John Harbaugh has been their coach. The Browns have allowed the second-most rushing yards in the NFL in the last 10 years.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It should be a great day for Forsett...provided the Ravens don't pull him in the red zone for Lorenzo Taliaferro. We like him as a RB1 this week against a Cleveland defense that is one of the worst units against the run.

OAK - RB Latavius Murray probable for Week 5

    Source: NFL

Oakland Raiders RB Latavius Murray (shoulder) fully participated in practice Friday, Oct. 9, and is listed as probable for the Week 5 game against the Denver Broncos.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're not crazy about starting Murray against the Broncos defense. Not only is he a little banged up (and in a bad matchup), but we could see the Raiders attack the edge of the defense with Roy Helu.

OAK - WR Michael Crabtree listed as probable

    Source: NFL

Oakland Raiders WR Michael Crabtree (ankle) fully participated in practice Friday, Oct. 9, and is listed as probable for the Week 5 game against the Denver Broncos.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Crabtree is likely to get covered by long-time rival Aqib Talib. We're taking Talib in this matchup.

WAS - WR Pierre Garcon probable against Atlanta

    Source: NFL

Washington Redskins WR Pierre Garcon (knee) practiced in full for the third straight day Friday, Oct. 9, and is probable for Week 5 against the Atlanta Falcons.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We could see Garcon finishing Week 5 as a WR2 with WR1 upside. Some of you out there may even be able to play him as a flex.

NO - WR Marques Colston, WR Brandin Cooks probable
    Source: NFL
New Orleans Saints WRs Marques Colston (non-injury) and Brandin Cooks (ankle) both practiced in full Friday, Oct. 9, and are probable for Week 5 against the Philadelphia Eagles.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Willie Snead is the Saints receiver we're watching closely. He's a WR3 this week against the Eagles. Cooks has been disappointing this year, but we still like him as a low-end WR2/flex play in Week 5. Colston is a WR5 in PPR leagues....and that means you're unlikely to start him.

BUF - TE Charles Clay, WR Percy Harvin will play
    Source: NFL
Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (calf) and WR Percy Harvin (hip) are both listed as probable for Week 5 against the Tennessee Titans. Clay was limited in practice Friday, Oct. 9, while Harvin was a full participant.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Against the Titans on Sunday, we think Clay could finish the day as a top-5 fantasy tight end. There's no Sammy Watkins in this game, and that could lead to more targets for Clay. Harvin could see better coverage without Watkins on the field. He's a WR3/flex play in Week 5.

ATL - TE Jacob Tamme likely will play
    Source: AtlantaFalcons.com
Atlanta Falcons TE Jacob Tamme (concussion) fully participated in practice Friday, Oct. 9, and is listed as probable for the Week 5 game against the Washington Redskins.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Falcons could sure use help at the tight end position. Tamme isn't done yet, but he's certainly not the player he used to be. We've got him as a TE2...and a low-end one at that against Washington in Week 5.

ATL - WR Leonard Hankerson probable
    Source: AtlantaFalcons.com
Atlanta Falcons WR Leonard Hankerson (thumb) fully participated in practice Friday, Oct. 9, and is listed as probable for the Week 5 game against the Washington Redskins.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Roddy White complained about his role on offense earlier this week...including F-bombs! That could lead a narrative that sees White get more targets this week against Washington. If that happens, it could mean fewer passes thrown towards Hankerson. He's an inconsistent fantasy asset, and we like him only as a WR3/flex play in Week 5.

ATL - WR Roddy White should be in uniform

    Source: AtlantaFalcons.com

Atlanta Falcons WR Roddy White (non-injury) fully participated in practice Friday, Oct. 9, and is listed as probable for the Week 5 game against the Washington Redskins.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

White had an up-and-down week. It started with F-bombs and unhappiness with his lack of targets. Then, rumors swirled about White being open to a trade. Yesterday, things calmed down as White said he's comfortable with his role on offense. We'll see if the Falcons make an effort to get White more involved against Washington on Sunday.

ATL - RB Tevin Coleman listed as probable

    Source: AtlantaFalcons.com

Atlanta Falcons RB Tevin Coleman (ribs) fully participated in practice Friday, Oct. 9, and is listed as probable for the Week 5 game against the Washington Redskins.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Things have changed for Coleman. He left as the starter, but he returns as a backup behind Devonta Freeman. While Coleman has been out, Freeman has taken over and exploded onto the fantasy scene. This week against Washington, rushing room will be tough to find--for both backs. We like Freeman as a RB1, but Coleman is no more than a "what the heck" flex this week. It's better to find a different option.

DET - RB Joique Bell, TE Eric Ebron ruled out

    Source: DetroitLions.com

Detroit Lions RB Joique Bell (ankle) and TE Eric Ebron (knee) both missed practice Friday, Oct. 9, and have been ruled out for Week 5 against the Arizona Cardinals.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Without Bell we could see more of rookies Ameer Abdullah and Zach Zenner. The Lions should continue using Theo Riddick as a change-of-pace back. Against the Cardinals in Week 5, Abdullah is only flex worthy--and he may be more of a "what the heck" flex against that tough defense.

SF - TE Vernon Davis will not play

    Source: 49ers.com

San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis (knee) was limited during practice Friday, Oct. 9, but has been ruled out for the Week 5 game against the New York Giants.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Davis has once again disappointed fantasy owners, and he should have been dropped already.

CIN - RB Jeremy Hill expected to play

    Source: Bengals.com

Cincinnati Bengals RB Jeremy Hill (knee) fully participated in practice Friday, Oct. 9, and is listed as probable for the Week 5 game against the Seattle Seahawks.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hill is a "Costco" back because his scoring comes in bulk. At home against the Seahawks, we see Hill as a low-end RB2/flex play in Week 5.

GB - WR Davante Adams questionable

    Source: Packers.com

Green Bay Packers WR Davante Adams (ankle) missed practice for the third straight day Friday, Oct. 9, but is questionable for Week 5 against the St. Louis Rams.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He's got to be on the doubtful side of questionable. We don't expect him to play, and this bumps up guys like James Jones and rookie Ty Montgomery.

BAL - TE Crockett Gillmore ruled out
    Source: BaltimoreRavens.com
Updating a previous report, Baltimore Ravens TE Crockett Gillmore (calf) has been ruled out for the Week 5 game against the Cleveland Browns.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The hits just keep on coming for the Ravens. The passing game is going to be limping along without Steve Smith Sr. or Gillmore. Look for a larger role for guys like Kamar Aiken and Maxx Williams.

TB - TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins in doubt

    Source: SportsTalkFlorida.com - Jenna Laine

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins (shoulder) is doubtful for Week 5 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It would be nice for Jameis Winston if Seferian-Jenkins would get back. Fantasy owners have already moved on. We'll see if Seferian-Jenkins can make an impact when healthy and back on the field.

SD - Stevie Johnson still idle
Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Tom Krasovic
San Diego Chargers WR Stevie Johnson (hamstring) is out of practice Friday, Oct. 9, and hasn't practiced all week.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Even though the Chargers play on Monday night against the Steelers, we don't think Johnson plays. Stay tuned to the Saturday practice report to see if something changes.

Rams OC Frank Cignetti said he plans to continue to put Tavon Austin in position to make plays.

"We’ve said it all offseason and camp, Tavon Austin’s a complete player," Cignetti said. "He’s a great route runner -- whether it’s taking the top off or running short routes. I’m very impressed with his play." Most of the narrative has been on Todd Gurley’s Week 4 breakout, but Austin’s big week shouldn’t be overlooked. Austin has started every game and has more targets than Jared Cook the last two weeks. Austin still has a lot to prove as a receiver, but the early signs are encouraging.

    Sunday Update

PIT - WR Martavis Bryant unlikely for Week 5

    Source: The Observer-Reporter - F. Dale Lolley

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant appears unlikely to make his season debut in Week 5 against the San Diego Chargers despite the fact his four-game suspension is complete.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He has practiced just once this week, and the team does not have to activate him for the game if they do not choose, and since he isn't active they do not need to disclose what kind of injury he is dealing with. Reports indicate this is a knee injury.

SEA - RB Fred Jackson a game-time decision

    Source: ESPN.com - Sheil Kapadia

Seattle Seahawks RB Fred Jackson (ankle) will participate in pregame workouts so the team can decide if he will be able to play against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Don't count on Jackson. Even if the veteran plays, it will be as a backup behind rookie Thomas Rawls.

SD - Stevie Johnson ruled out

San Diego Chargers WR Stevie Johnson (hamstring) has been ruled out for Week 5 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Without Johnson on the field on Monday night, the Chargers should turn to guys like Malcom Floyd and Dontrelle Inman.

SEA - RB Marshawn Lynch to return next week?

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Seattle Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch (hamstring) could return to practice next week on Wednesday, Oct. 14, but the Seahawks want him to be at 100%.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He's close, but the Seahawks are wisely being cautious here. Lycnh is dealing with tissue damage in his strained hamstring and has been ruled out for Week 5.

DAL - Dallas to use RB rotation

Source: The Dallas Morning News - Jon Machota

Dallas Cowboys RB Joseph Randle will start the Week 5 game against the New England Patriots in Week 5, with RB Darren McFadden seeing action a couple of series later and then giving way to RB Christine Michael. According to vice president Stephen Jones, the team will go with the hot hand from there.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ah, the dreaded "hot hand" approach. This is a bit messy for fantasy owners to nagivate; but here goes. Randle is a RB2, McFadden is a RB4/flex and Michael is more of a "what the heck" flex. We'll see who gets the hot hand (if anyone) in what is likely to be a come-from-behind game for Dallas.

ARI - RB David Johnson could see role reduced

    Source: ESPN.com - Josh Weinfuss

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson will see his role reduced if RB Andre Ellington (knee) plays well when he returns from injury and RB Chris Johnson continues to play well, head coach Bruce Arians said. 'It's not hard because the young guy sits down' Arians said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's not a surprise. Ellington's return may not impact Chris Johnson that much as the lead back. However, it should cut into David Johnson's limited role as a part-time player.

PIT - WR Markus Wheaton listed as probable

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Markus Wheaton (ankle) is listed as probable for Week 5 against the San Diego Chargers.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With reports of Martavis Bryant perhaps missing the Monday night game against the Chargers, then perhaps Wheaton will get a few more looks. Even if Bryant doesn't play, we're not looking to Wheaton for any fantasy help.

SD - WR Malcom Floyd questionable

    Source: Chargers.com

San Diego Chargers WR Malcom Floyd (concussion) is listed as questionable for Week 5 against the Pittsburgh Steeleres.

SEA - QB Russell Wilson throwing ball quickly

    Source: ESPN.com - Sheil Kapadia

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson is releasing the football quicker than he ever has. It is taking Wilson just 2.58 seconds to throw this year, according to ESPN Stats and Information. The third-year quarterback is also throwing shorter passes, averaging 6.6 yards per attempt.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That sounds fast, but actually the NFL average is 2.42 seconds. Wilson ranks 26th in average time before pass. The leader is (of course) Tom Brady. The Patriots QB gets rid of the ball in 2.04 seconds on average.

ATL - RB Devonta Freeman should still start

    Source: ESPN.com - Vaughn McClure

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman should remain the starting running back even with RB Tevin Coleman returning this week, according to ESPN.com's Vaughn McClure.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's not a question after the two-week hot steak that Freeman has been on (six rushing touchdowns during that time). Coleman was the lead back, but now he'll work back into the mix as a backup behind Freeman. It's a tough matchup against Washington this week, but many of you are going to ride the hot hand that is Freeman. The rookie Coleman is more of a "what the heck" flex in his first week back.

DEN - More touches for WR Emmanuel Sanders?

    Source: 9News.com - Mike Klis

Denver Broncos WR Emmanuel Sanders could be more involved in the offense moving forward. Head coach Gary Kubiak said it's important to get Sanders more involved, adding that he's a playmaker for the Broncos.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

So much for a smaller role. Sanders said before the season started that his role would be smaller this year under Kubiak. Now, Sanders is on pace for 100 catches after having 101 catches last year. Fantasy owners need to have Sanders and Demaryius Thomas (and TE Owen Daniels) locked into the lineup in what should be a big day through the air against the Raiders in Week 5.

GB - WR Davante Adams downgraded

    Source: ESPN.com - Josina Anderson

Green Bay Packers WR Davante Adams (ankle) has been downgraded to doubtful for the Week 5 game against the St. Louis Rams.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Adams just needs more time to heal. This is going to mean more targets for guys like James Jones and rookie Ty Montgomery. We like Jones as a WR2 with upside, and Montgomery makes for a nice "what the heck" flex in Week 5.

BAL - WR Jeremy Ross added to roster

    Source: WNST.net - Luke Jones

Baltimore Ravens WR Jeremy Ross has been promoted from the practice squad to their active roster Saturday, Oct. 10. The team also waived DT Christo Bilukidi.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ross has bounced around the league, but he has plenty experience on game day. The Ravens are desperate at wide receiver with Steve Smith Sr. and Breshad Perriman both out of action.

DAL - RB Lance Dunbar placed on IR

    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Dallas Cowboys RB Lance Dunbar (knee) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Saturday, Oct. 10. The team also promoted WR Vince Mayle from the practice squad to their active roster.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Without Dunbar in the lineup, we're expecting more targets for slot WR Cole Beasley. We like him as a "punt play" for DFS players in Week 5.

ATL - WR Julio Jones expected to play

    Source: ESPN.com - Vaughn McClure

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones (toe, hamstring) is expected to play in the Week 5 game against the Washington Redskins even though he is listed as questionable for the game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones is pretty much the entire offense, and we're expecting a big day against Washington. OC Kyle Shanahan is moving Jones around the formation, and the veteran wide receiver is making big plays. You're not taking him out of the lineup, even if he's been a little banged up.

TEN - WR Dorial Green-Beckham making progress

    Source: ESPN.com - Paul Kuharsky

Tennessee Titans WR Dorial Green-Beckham has shown he can be a tough matchup for opponents and should be more involved in the offense as the season goes on, according to general manager Ruston Webster.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The rookie has already proven that he's a red-zone threat, and it should come as no surprise to anyone who saw him in college. Green-Beckham has the physical talent to be a top-10 WR in the NFL. If he keeps his head on straight and plays up to his potential, he could one day be a set-it-and-forget-it WR1 for fantasy owners. Now, Green-Beckham is merely a "what the heck" flex.

Reports indicate that Herron is going to split time with Anthony Dixon in the backfield this week. Offensive coordinator Greg Roman said he has been impressed with Herron during practice and indicated Herron likely will have a role in the Week 5 game against the Tennessee Titans.

OAK - WR Amari Cooper expected to be returner

    Source: ESPN.com - Bill Williamson

Oakland Raiders WR Amari Cooper is expected to serve as the team's punt returner during their Week 5 game against the Denver Broncos because CB Travis Carrie (chest) has been ruled out.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cooper could make an impact against a Broncos coverage team that has had some gaffes from time to time. The impact he makes as a receiver could be limited in Week 5 because of the swarming Broncos defense.

HOU - RB Alfred Blue dealing with turf toe

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans RB Alfred Blue (toe) is battling a turf toe injury, head coach Bill O'Brien said Friday, Oct. 9.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Turf toe is a nasty injury, and it takes some time for that to heal. With Arian Foster back, Blue should be able to get plenty of rest.

DET - TE Brandon Pettigrew to make big impact?

    Source: DetroitLions.com

Detroit Lions TE Brandon Pettigrew (hamstring) is expected to start in Week 5 against the Arizona Cardinals after a full practice Friday, Oct. 9, has him listed as probable.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pettigrew is an underrated receiver, but he's an amazing blocker and could be kept in more because of it. The Lions offense is out of sync, so we want to see what Pettigrew can do in this system before getting excited about his fantasy prospects.

According to CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora, the Bills are "anticipating" Karlos Williams (concussion) could miss another game.

He's already been ruled out for Sunday's game in Tennessee and now his status appears to be in doubt for Week 6 against Cincinnati. With LeSean McCoy (hamstring) out for at least another few weeks, the Bills will roll with Boobie Dixon and Dan Herron at running back. Cierre Wood will also be in the mix for change-of-pace carries.

Chiefs line goes up 1/2 point. Can't see the Bears winning this game without a defense or special teams TD
