NFL Player News - Week of August 3rd

    Courtesy of Footballguys.com

HOU - Ryan Mallet works with first-team

Source: NFL Network - Omar Ruiz

Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallet worked with the first-team offense Sunday, Aug. 2, after QB Brian Hoyer worked with the first-team Saturday, Aug. 1. 'Whenever he (Bill O'Brien) feels like someone is ready to be named the starter that's what he'll do, and whatever way it goes, I have really a lot of trust and faith in him,' Hoyer said. 'Whatever he decides will be best for the team.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Texans have one of the worst quarterback situations in the league. Mallet is competing with veteran journeyman Brian Hoyer for the starting job. No matter who wins, the Texans aren't going to have a high-powered passing game in 2015.

NYJ - QB Geno Smith leading QB battle

Source: NFL Network - Kimberly Jones

New York Jets QB Geno Smith and QB Ryan Fitzpatrick have not thrown interceptions thus far in training camp, but Smith is still the leading candidate to open the year as the starter.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smith finished last year with a 358, three-touchdown performance against the Dolphins. This year, Smith will be working under new OC Chan Gailey and could work well in the spread system. Fitzpatrick had his best years under Gailey during their time together in Buffalo, and he's going to push Smith throughout training camp.

PIT - WR Martavis Bryant has elbow infection

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Gerry Dulac

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant (elbow) will undergo a procedure for an elbow infection that will cause him to miss the Hall of Fame Game Sunday, Aug. 9, against the Minnesota Vikings. He is expected to be sidelined for seven to 10 days because of an infection caused by an ingrown hair.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This just sounds painful. Bryant will be shut down for a week or so, but he's set to be ready for Week 3 of the preseason at the latest. The second-year pro makes for a nice WR3 with upside for fantasy owners.

PHI - QB Sam Bradford has no restrictions

    Source: NFL.com - Conor Orr

Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford (knee) has been cleared for 11-on-11 drills Sunday, Aug. 2, and head coach Chip Kelly told reporters the quarterback doesn't have any restrictions.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's got to be considered a win after Bradford's offseason items were generally negative. He still has to beat Mark Sanchez in a QB competition that has gone under the radar so far in the NFL news churn. Bradford being fully cleared does give him no excuse to not clearly outplay Sanchez.

KC - RB Jamaal Charles used in passing game

    Source: ESPN.com - Adam Teicher

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles was emphasized in the screen game during practice Saturday, Aug. 1, and in one drill, nine straight passes were thrown to running backs.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Chiefs didn't throw a touchdown to a wide receiver at all last year. The arrival of Jeremy Maclin should change that, but this team is still going to target Charles plenty as a receiver out of the backfield.

KC - S Eric Berry working with second-team

    Source: ESPN.com - Adam Teicher

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry (illness) worked with the second-team defense during practice Saturday, Aug. 1.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're so happy to see Berry back on the field after beating cancer. We are part of #TeamBerry for sure. We'll see if he can work his way up the depth chart during camp.

OAK - RB Trent Richardson's spot in jeopardy?

    Source: NFL.com - Ian Rapoport

Oakland Raiders RB Trent Richardson is likely competing with RB Michael Dyer for a spot on the 53-man roster, and NFL.com's Ian Rapoport puts Richardson's chances of making the final roster at 50-50.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Dyer was once at the top of FBS football when he helped Cam Newton lead Auburn to a national title in 2010. After a 1,200-yard season for Auburn in 2011, off-field issues then caused him to transfer three times. He didn't play at either Arkansas State or Arkansas Baptist, but he finally got on the field for Louisville last year and rushed for 481 yards and five touchdowns last year. He's not explosive and not proven as a receiver out of the backfield. This is the guy that could push a former top-5 pick (2012) off the Raiders roster. That speaks volumes for where Richardson is at.

CIN - DE Michael Johnson injures knee

Source: NFL Network - Albert Breer

Cincinnati Bengals DE Michael Johnson (knee) suffered an apparent medial collateral ligament sprain Sunday, Aug. 2.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bad news for the Bengals here. We'll know more about the severity of this injury when MRI results are released. Early reports indicate that Johnson did not fully tear the MCL, and he may only miss about six weeks.

BUF - Richie Incognito to start at left guard

    Source: WKBW.com - Joe Buscaglia
Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan confirmed that OG Richie Incognito will be the team's starting left guard Sunday, Aug. 2.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Out of football for the 2014 season, teams stayed away from Incognito after he was in the middle of the Dolphins bullying scandal the previous year. The Bills needed help up front, so they signed Incognito to a one-year contract. Now, he's the starter and should be able to help blast open holes for LeSean McCoy.

BAL - WR Breshad Perriman will need more time

Source: The Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Baltimore Ravens WR Breshad Perriman (knee) may take more time than the team initially hoped he'd need to recover from a bruised knee. The injury is still not regarded as long-term at this point.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

These practices and reps could be the difference between a hot and slow start for a raw rookie like Perriman. There's no reason to move him down your board yet, but if this lingers and costs him preseason games, it can't be seen as a positive.

WAS - TE Jordan Reed trying to shed label

    Source: Redskins.com - Stephen Czarda

Washington Redskins TE Jordan Reed is ready to shed the narrative that he is injury prone. Reed has missed a total of 12 games over his first two seasons in the NFL. 'Right now I'm staying positive and I feel like the injuries are in my past and I'm moving on,' Reed said. 'I just need to focus on maintenance of my body. I won't let nagging injuries catch up to me. I've made some changes, and I'll be ready,' said Reed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Reed got a stem cell injection this offseason for his hamstring and knee issues. While it could help, it is not a good sign about Reed's injury outlook. Niles Paul was re-signed by Washington this offseason and could easily end up being the more valuable tight end for fantasy leagues.

KC - WR Jeremy Maclin stretching the field

    Source: ESPN.com - Adam Teicher

Kansas City Chiefs WR Jeremy Maclin caught a long pass from QB Alex Smith on the second play of training camp Saturday, Aug. 1, and he caught a few more deep balls during the day. 'We've got a new weapon,' Smith said. 'We've got to test it out a little bit. We've known for a while what we've got with him.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's what Maclin does. He's a vertical threat with the ability to make defenders miss after the catch. We like him as a WR3 with upside for fantasy owners this year.

PIT - Pittsburgh acquires CB Brandon Boykin
Source: CBSSports.com - Jason La Canfora

The Pittsburgh Steelers acquired CB Brandon Boykin from the Philadelphia Eagles Saturday, Aug. 1, in exchange for a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. The Eagles could receive a fourth-round pick depending on Boykin's playing time, according to a source.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Pro Football Focus rated Boykin as the Eagles' best cornerback in 2014, and he finished at no. 21 overall. He's one of the best young slot corners in the league, and he should immediately boost a poor Steelers secondary that ranked 27th against the pass in 2014.

    Tuesday Update

PHI - RB DeMarco Murray being eased in?

    Source: CSNPhilly.com - Corey Seidman

Philadelphia Eagles RB DeMarco Murray hardly practiced Sunday, July 30, but it wasn't because he's not healthy. Murray said he is fine and is trying to do as much as he can for his new team.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Murray had an enormous workload last year for the Cowboys, so it's wise for the Eagles to ease him into action. He won't see the 393 carries that he had last year, but Murray's workload as a runner and receiver will certainly make him a RB1 for fantasy owners. His current ADP is RB10 (2.06) in 12-team PPR leagues.

TB - QB Jameis Winston struggles with blitz

Source: Tampa Bay Times - Rick Stroud

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston struggled under the blitz in practice Monday, Aug. 3. Winston threw three interceptions in his first five pass attempts.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is all part of the learning process. Defenses at this level are tough and Winston, like all rookie QBs, will have an adjustment period where they learn. We think he'll be very good. But there will be bumps.

TEN - Committee to be used in TEN?

    Source: ESPN.com - Paul Kuharsky

Tennessee Titans RBs Bishop Sankey and David Cobb could lead a running back by committee this season, according to ESPN.com's Paul Kuharsky. RBs Antonio Andrews and Dexter McCluster would also be in the mix.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We think the Titans would be best to start Cobb over Sankey, but hey at least a RBBC featuring both gets them close. Cobb is a powerful and efficient runner who can grind down a defense. With rookie fullback Jalston Fowler blasting open holes in front of him, it could make for a nice rushing attack. Fantasy owners should stay away from the Titans backfield until we get more clarity about the starter and the split.

CHI - No timetable for WR Kevin White

    Source: ESPNChicago.com - Jeff Dickerson

Chicago Bears WR Kevin White (shin) is still on the Physically Unable to Perform list and there is no timetable for his return, according to head coach John Fox. Fox said he considers White day-to-day at this time.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team is going to take it easy with their potential star rookie. On the PUP list during camp, the Bears can activate him at any time. If healthy, White could win the WR2 job opposite Alshon Jeffery this year. Right now, Eddie Royal is in that spot.

BUF - RB LeSean McCoy adjusting to having a FB

Source: The Buffalo News - Tyler Dunne

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy is adjusting to having a fullback in front of him for the first time since college. Bills head coach Rex Ryan believes in a physical style of football that requires a lead blocker, in this case FB Jerome Felton.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McCoy is going to easily be faster than any fullback in front of him. He'll have to get used to patiently waiting and following his lead blocker before he gets to blast to the second level of the defense.

BUF - Buffalo's QB situation unclear

Source: The Buffalo News - Tyler Dunne

The Buffalo Bills likely wish they could mold QB Matt Cassel's experience with QB Tyrod Taylor's athleticism and QB EJ Manuel's measurables to create a starting quarterback, in the opinion of The Buffalo News writer Tyler Dunne. Cassel appears to be the leader in the clubhouse among the team's quarterbacks. Manuel continues to struggle in practice, and Taylor seems indecisive at times but shows athletic traits.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cassel has the experience, but he's got little upside as a below average starter. Manuel was the first-round pick in 2013, but he's failed to play up to his potential. Taylor is super quick and fast, plus he has a rocket arm. However, Taylor is not polished as a passer.

DAL - WR Dez Bryant involved in scuffle

    Source: CSNWashington.com

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant was reportedly involved in an altercation with CB Tyler Patmon during training camp Sunday, Aug. 2.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're not surprised here. Bryant is one of the most passionate players in the league. That passion sometimes spills over to altercations. Nothing to see here.

TB - TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins still needs work

Source: The Tampa Tribune - Ira Kaufman

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins still needs to improve his hands, according to Ira Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Seferian-Jenkins is a mountain of a man who just happens to play tight end. He could be a nice red-zone target for rookie QB Jameis Winston this year. For fantasy purposes, we like Seferian-Jenkins as a TE2 with upside.

CIN - DE Michael Johnson update

    Source: NFL.com - Conor Orr

Updating a previous report, Cincinnati Bengals DE Michael Johnson (knee) will be out four weeks with a grade 2 medial collateral ligament sprain.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bad news for the Bengals defense here. By missing a month, Johnson will have to be eased back in with the regular season right around the corner. With Johnson out, Margus Hunt and Will Clarke will get a chance to showcase what they've got.

ARI - RB Andre Ellington not practicing

    Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington (hamstring) will miss practice Monday, Aug 3, with a tightened hamstring.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hamstring injuries are known to linger if not treated properly. We'll see Ellington back soon enough as the injury is not considered serious, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

ARI - RB David Johnson injured
    Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson (hamstring) is considered day-to-day with a hamstring injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Johnson is not a burner, but he does have great short-area quickness. This hamstring injury should slow him down for a few days. No word on the severity of the injury.

ARI - TE Jermaine Gresham activated

Source: The Arizona Republic - Kent Somers

Arizona Cardinals TE Jermaine Gresham (back) was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list Monday, Aug. 3. He is expected to be limited during his first few practices.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Awesome....for fantasy owners it won't matter. Bruce Arians uses tight ends as extra blockers.

CHI - WR Alshon Jeffery misses practice
    Source: ESPNChicago.com - Jeff Dickerson

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery (shoulder) did not participate in practice Monday, Aug. 3, because he suffered a sprained AC joint in his shoulder over the weekend.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners need to keep an eye on this situation. The team does not believe Jeffery's injury is serious. We'll know more about this injury in the near future.

NO - WR Marques Colston sees more work

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Triplett

New Orleans Saints WR Marques Colston (undisclosed) participated in some 7-on-7 drills during practice Monday, Aug. 3. Colston said he was taking things slow during practice since he started training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Colston is a seasoned vet, and he doesn't need a ton of reps in the preseason. We'll see him do more as the season draws closer. Fantasy owners should realize that Colston isn't quite the same as he used to be. His current ADP is WR46 (10.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

HOU - OLB Jadeveon Clowney two weeks away

    Source: ESPN

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) is expected to return to the field Monday, Aug. 17, according to Texans head coach Bill O'Brien.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Clowney is coming back off of microfracture surgery, which can leave a player a shadow of himself. Travis Kelce seems to be doing fine after rookie year microfracture surgery, though. If he is even 80-90% of the player he was at his peak in South Carolina, Clowney should help the Texans defense remain a top 3 fantasy option and perhaps help the team push for a wild card spot.

IND - OLB Robert Mathis needs to slow down

    Source: NFL.com - Conor Orr
Indianapolis Colts LB Robert Mathis (Achilles') needs to slow down in his rehabilitation process, according to Colts head coach Chuck Pagano. Mathis, 34, is recovering from a torn Achilles' tendon and will be brought along slowly.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mathis will have a good bookend on the other side of the defense after the Eagles signed Trent Cole this offseason. He could have a deliberate return from his injury, which would put Jonathan Newsome on the field for more snaps to ease Mathis back into the mix.

    Wednesday Update

HOU - RB Arian Foster could be placed on IR

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport
Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (groin) may begin the regular season on the short-term Reserve/Injured list. Foster suffered a groin injury Tuesday, Aug. 4, that will likely require surgery.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Stay tuned here. Foster could be out for a majority of the regular season, but there's a chance he could return for the fantasy playoffs.

SEA - TE Jimmy Graham preparing to block more

Source: The Associated Press - Tim Booth

Seattle Seahawks TE Jimmy Graham said the priority of blocking is on par with making receptions in his new offense. 'It's very important for me to be a part of that here because that's about 75 percent of the offense here and if you have a back like (Marshawn Lynch), you want to be in there on those explosive runs and you want to be part of that,' Graham said. 'Third-and-10 is when I'm going to make my money, and that's when I'm going to have to be special for this team.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners should prepare for Graham to block more as well. He's not going to be quite the fantasy force that he was in New Orleans. That being said, Graham is still a top-5 fantasy tight end. His current ADP is TE2 (3.06) in 12-team PPR leagues.

CIN - RB Jeremy Hill likely to see majority reps

Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Paul Dehner Jr.

Cincinnati Bengals RB Jeremy Hill is likely to see a majority of the reps in the backfield over RB Giovani Bernard, according to beat writer Paul Dehner Jr.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll see Hill as the team's lead back this season after he started last year as a backup. He can bang it between the tackles to soften up an opponent, but Hill can also break off big runs. We like him as a low-end RB1 for fantasy owners. His current ADP is RB11 (2.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

TB - RB Doug Martin named lead back

    Source: NFL.com - Gregg Rosenthal

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Doug Martin was confirmed as the team's lead back Monday, Aug. 3, by head coach Lovie Smith. 'We talked about being able to establish the run. Doug will be the lead guy doing that, so it's very important that we open up some holes and let him do his thing,' Smith said via the Tampa Bay Times.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Martin is the starter for now, but how long does that last? He's going to be pushed in training camp and the preseason by Charles Sims. Martin was great as a rookie, but he's turned in two disappointing seasons after that because of injury and inconsistency.

HOU - RB Pierre Thomas to workout Wednesday

Source: NFL Network - Rand Getlin

Free-agent RB Pierre Thomas (Saints) is on his way to visit the Houston Texans Tuesday, Aug. 4, and he is expected to workout for the team Wednesday.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Texans are going to be looking long and hard at free agent backs as Arian Foster (groin) is likely to miss a large chunk of the regular season. Thomas can still be a good all-purpose back and give them quality veteran depth behind Alfred Blue.

WAS - QB Robert Griffin III needs to be ordinary

    Source: NFL.com - Dan Hanzus

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III told SI.com's Peter King Friday, July 31, the team is asking him to be more basic in 2015.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Griffin had a fantastic rookie season in 2012, but injuries have robbed him of the athleticism that gave him such huge potential. Now, he's got to make better decisions from the pocket as a passer. If he makes a mistake, Griffin needs to show better composure and get back on track. This is shaping up to be a make-or-break season for Griffin.

OAK - QB Derek Carr to throw deeper?

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr may look to throw more downfield this year due to new WRs Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree, a new coaching staff and a more solid offensive line.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We love Cooper....absolutely love what he could be in the pros. He's a special player with speed, quickness and route-running ability. The rookie should take the top off the defense and be a regular target for Carr. We like Crabtree better on underneath/drag routes where he can use his size and run-after-the-catch ability to his advantage.

GB - RB Eddie Lacy leaves practice

    Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (foot) left practice Tuesday, Aug. 4, with a sore foot. RB James Starks finished out practice with the top unit. No indication was given as to which foot was sore and forced Lacy from workouts.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Keep an eye on this situation. Lacy had plenty of injury concerns when he came out of Alabama as a second-round pick in 2013. He's compiled 3,000 all-purpose yards in two seasons, but Lacy's touches have been monitored closely during his time in the pros. The team will be cautious with their starter here. Fantasy owners need to recognize that Starks would be a top-15 fantasy back if called upon for a starter's role.

NE - WR Julian Edelman hurt in practice

    Source: ESPNBoston.com - Mike Reiss

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (undisclosed) came up gimpy during practice Sunday, Aug. 2, and rehabilitated during practice Tuesday, Aug. 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's the Patriots, so the severity of this injury will be unclear. We'll be able to guess at the severity by the length of time that Edelman misses practice. Stay tuned.

PHI - QB Sam Bradford taking first-team reps

    Source: ESPN - Ed Werder

Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford is taking the first-team repetitions at quarterback during training camp ahead of QB Mark Sanchez. Sanchez is Bradford's primary competition after returning from his second anterior cruciate ligament injury of his career. Bradford has made a strong early impression on head coach Chip Kelly.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bradford is the clearly the guy the Eagles want at quarterback. Sanchez has more experience in the system and he has taken a leadership role this offseason. If Sanchez shines or Bradford is slow to get to the engine to turn over in this offense because of his recovery from a second ACL tear, this could turn into a quarterback controversy, or even competition soon.

PIT - WR Martavis Bryant not starting yet

    Source: Steelers.com - Bob Labriola

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant remains behind WR Antonio Brown on the official depth chart. WR Markus Wheaton is listed as the starter opposite Brown.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If Bryant can't overtake Wheaton on the depth chart by early in the season, we probably shouldn't be interested in him at ADP anyway. The buzz around both wideouts is positive, but Bryant clearly has a higher ceiling. Wheaton was not on the same page with Ben Roethlisberger last year, so practice reports and preseason action is important here. Bryant still offers enough upside to justify a 6th or 7th round pick because he showed that he is still a viable boom/bust WR3/Flex even if his role doesn't change from last year.

NE - TE Rob Gronkowski sees bonus early

    Source: ESPNBoston.com - Field Yates

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski had his deal restructured Tuesday, Aug. 4, which awarded him $4 million of his $10 million bonus that was due at the end of the 2015 league year. Gronkowski's contract called for a $10 million option bonus for the team to decide upon by the end of the 2015 league year that would, in effect, kick in the remaining four years on his deal. If the team opted to decline that bonus, Gronkowski would become a free agent.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gronkowski said in his recent book that he hasn't touched a penny of his contract or bonus money. Instead, Gronkowski lives off endorsement deals. The Patriots are locking up the league's best tight end for the foreseeable future.

BUF - TE Charles Clay has confidence

Source: The Buffalo News - Tyler Dunne

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay put himself in the class of TEs Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham Tuesday, Aug. 4. 'I look at myself as I'm capable of doing anything,' Clay said. 'I feel like I'm my own player. I feel like there's things I can do they can't do. And there's things they can do where I'm not as polished,' said Clay.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Whoa there Nelly, let's pump the brakes on that comparison. Clay is a good tight end, and he's certainly a versatile player but he's nowhere near the talent of Gronkowski or Graham.

NFL - RB Ray Rice wants to retire the right way

    Source: NFL.com - Dan Hanzus

Free-agent RB Ray Rice (Ravens) told ESPN's Jemele Hill in an interview that aired Tuesday, Aug. 4, he wants a chance to retire after playing. 'I have a lot of hope and faith that I'll be able to hang 'em up the right way … That's what's keeping me going. That's what's keeping me working. My wife and my kid believe in me. They're pushing me harder sometimes than I can push myself. I just want to give it all,' Rice said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rice has not received any interest on the open market so far. The Cowboys haven't shown interest, but we'll see if the Texans show interest now that Arian Foster (groin) is going to need surgery.

NYG - WR Rueben Randle could add to dynamic duo

Source: New York Daily News - Ralph Vacchiano

New York Giants WR Rueben Randle could turn the Giants' dynamic duo of WRs Odell Beckham Jr. and Victor Cruz into a Big 3 threat at the position in 2015. “Rueben’s been working hard,” said Giants wide receivers coach Sean Ryan. 'He's done everything we've asked of him, whether it was in the spring or now coming back to camp. I feel good moving forward. To me, the past is the past. Lessons have been learned and I expect nothing but the best from him this year,' said Ryan.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

All reports have been positive about Cruz's recovery, but fantasy owners should not forget about Randle. The veteran likely steps back into a complementary role this year as Cruz should be back. Think of him as a bye-week starter or injury replacement on your fantasy depth chart.

OAK - WR Michael Crabtree showing off hands

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Oakland Raiders WR Michael Crabtree could be playing himself into a new contract this season as he continues to impress his new team. Crabtree's hands have been his strong suit throughout his career, and he's displaying those hands again with the Raiders.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Another day and another positive story about Crabtree. The passing game is led by second-year QB Derek Carr, and the Raiders should feature rookie Amari Cooper early and often. Crabtree could catch 50 passes and a few touchdowns as a relief-valve receiver on intermediate routes. That makes him a WR5/WR6 for fantasy owners.

PIT - WR Markus Wheaton ready for breakout?

    Source: NFL.com - Gregg Rosenthal

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Markus Wheaton could be Pittsburgh's breakout player this year, according to QB Ben Roethlisberger. WR Martavis Bryant (elbow) recently underwent an elbow procedure, giving Wheaton the opportunity to prove himself as the Steelers' No. 2 wide receiver.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wheaton has been a slight disappointment to this point in his career. In an age where rookie wide receivers can make big impacts, Wheaton has taken two years to get up to speed in the NFL. In 2014, Wheaton's 12.73 air yards per target was tied with Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green for 20th-best in the league--12th best for receivers with 50 or more catches. To improve his fantasy stock, Wheaton will have to get into the end zone more often (only two receiving touchdowns last year).

CLE - RB Duke Johnson will play catch up

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns RB Duke Johnson (hamstring) will have some catching up to do when he returns from his hamstring injury, according to head coach Mike Pettine. Pettine said Johnson is still preparing mentally, but he's losing valuable repetitions on the practice field.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The rookie seems to be a favorite of the coaching staff, but Pettine is right. Johnson needs to get out there and learn the pro game in camp before he can be relied on for a larger role in the regular season. We know the kid can make plays in the open field as a runner or receiver. We'll be watching closely to see if he can prove himself in pass-protection during camp and the preseason.

PIT - QB Landry Jones to start Sunday?

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Ed Bouchette

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Landry Jones had another excellent practice Monday, Aug. 3, and it looks like he'll start against the Minnesota Vikings Sunday, Aug. 9, with QB Ben Roethlisberger sitting out. Jones hasn't dressed for a game since he was drafted by the Steelers in 2013. QB Bruce Gradkowski (arm) continues to sit out with 'arm fatigue.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones is a player we are monitoring in super deep dynasty leagues. We love the Hall of Fame Game, but it's really bad football as the first preseason game of the year. Don't expect a lot from Jones in this debut.

PIT - WR Antonio Brown returning punts still

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Ed Bouchette

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown is unlikely to return punts in the Hall of Fame Game Sunday, Aug. 9, but he'll likely do it the following weekend, and the team has every intention of keeping him in the punt returner role unless any of the other candidates excels in the job. Brown likes returning punts and wants to continue doing so.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This might seem nuts considering Brown's tactical importance to the team, but he has made returns that have swung games, and sometimes you just let your superstars do what they want if it helps the team. The media and fanbase will be all over the Steelers if he gets hurt on a return nonetheless.

    Thursday Update

HOU - RB Pierre Thomas will not join Houston

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Updating a previous report, free-agent RB Pierre Thomas (Saints) was unable to reach an agreement with the Houston Texans after his visit with the team Wednesday, Aug. 5, according to his agent.

"We want someone that can do a little bit of everything," coach Bill O'Brien said. "I know that sounds like a noncommittal type of answer, but it's the truth. We want a guy that can run the football in certain situations, a guy that can catch the ball in the backfield, a guy that can help us on special teams. I'm sure we'll find some candidates to be able to do that." [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This sounds like a money issue. The Texans would likely offer Thomas the veteran minimum, and he may feel like he's worth more. Stay tuned.

HOU - No favorite for Houston QB job

    Source: ESPN.com - Tania Ganguli

Houston Texans QBs Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett remain in a close competition for the starting quarterback job, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. O'Brien said he believes both quarterbacks could start for the team.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We wouldn't have a favorite either if the chose was Hoyer or Mallett...that's like the choice between airline food and hospital food. Both will get the job done, but you're not excited about either one. Fantasy owners are wisely avoiding this situation.

NYJ - RB Chris Ivory to get goal-line work?

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets RB Chris Ivory was impressive in the goal-line period of practice Wednesday, Aug. 5, using a burst of speed to beat members of the secondary.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ivory is the lead back for the Jets...for now. He'll get pushed for the job by Stevan Ridley once he's back from his knee injury. At that time, Ridley may push for a RBBC featuring both backs. Right now, consider Ivory a RB3 for your fantasy teams.

HOU - RB Alfred Blue is next man up

    Source: ESPN.com

Houston Texans RB Alfred Blue is expected to take over the first-team duties with RB Arian Foster (groin) expected to miss some time in the regular season according to ESPN. RBs Jonathan Grimes and Chris Polk could also see more action in the backfield with Foster injured.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Blue is a player who has earned the respect of those around (and on) the team. He's a bruising back, and reports indicate that he's improved his ability to play on third downs. We'll see if he can be the feature back, or if the team will try to use some form of RBBC while Foster is out.

CLE - RB Duke Johnson could have big role

Source: NFL Network - Albert Breer

Cleveland Browns RB Duke Johnson (hamstring) likely will receive a heavy workload in the running game this season. The team are being cautious with Johnson as he returns from a hamstring injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The rookie is likely to work in a RBBC with Isaiah Crowell. Johnson is the change-of-pace/explosive back while Crowell is the hammer who can be used to soften up defenses. In PPR leagues, don't hesitate to add Johnson as a RB4 with upside.

MIN - RB Adrian Peterson due for big year?

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson could see plenty of rushing yards in 2015 under offensive coordinator Norv Turner. Running backs under Turner have led the NFL five times in rushing.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Turner and Peterson is a great combination. Peterson wants to rush for 2,500 yards this year, and we're not going to doubt him. Now, he's unlikely to hit that number, but 1,500 yards on the ground sounds about right (maybe even a touch low). Fantasy owners should bet on Peterson as a top-3 pick in most every draft out there.

MIA - QB Ryan Tannehill feeling comfortable

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill said he is feeling more comfortable during training camp than he has in the past. 'I feel a lot more comfortable, making quicker decisions, knowing exactly where to put the ball versus certain looks in these newer routes, that were new last year,' Tannehill said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're excited about the Dolphins potential this year. It's not outlandish to think that this team could push the New England Patriots for the division title. The team improved the weapons around Tannehill this offseason, and he could turn in a top-10 fantasy QB performance this season.

DAL - RB Darren McFadden expected to be ready

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (hamstring) is expected to be fully healed in time for the season opener against the New York Giants, according to owner and general manager Jerry Jones.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Awesome, the guy who is always banged up (seemingly) plans on not being banged up by the time the starter's role has already been established. McFadden's career will always read "what might have been" because he has an injury history as long as Infinite Jest. Joseph Randle should be the lead back for the Cowboys and a RB2 for fantasy owners.

Indianapolis Colts WR Phillip Dorsett is believed my many in Colts' training camp to have a skill set that is essentially a carbon copy of Washington Redskins WR DeSean Jackson's, according to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport Wednesday, Aug. 5.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Dorsett is fast and capable of getting by defenders in the blink of an eye. He has fantastic body control, and Dorsett does a good job of tracking passes deep over his shoulder. Dorsett relies on speed to get open, but he needs to do a better job of setting up his routes.

BUF - Buffalo in QB purgatory

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Rodak

Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley said the team is 'almost in quarterback purgatory' since they don't currently have a franchise quarterback and are unlikely to receive a high draft pick in the coming years. Currently, Buffalo has a three-way quarterback competition between QBs Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor and EJ Manuel. Whaley said Manuel is a bit behind and the team is looking to see noticeable improvement from him in 2015. Head coach Rex Ryan has been happy with Manuel but would like to see more consistency with his accuracy. Without a franchise quarterback, Ryan expects the team to have a run-heavy playbook from offensive coordinator Greg Roman.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Whaley is correct, the Bills have one of the worst quarterback situations in the league. They're too good to earn a premium draft pick in the first round, but they're not good enough to be a real playoff contender. We'll see if they can somehow, someway find a franchise quarterback.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's year two for Manning under OC Ben McAdoo, so he should be more comfortable in the offense. Sullivan also said that Manning looks like he a renewed energy and extra motivation. Manning has also taken care of his body and worked on his fundamentals and techniques.

We're interested to see what Smith looks like in the Chan Gailey offense. Gailey is known for crafting offenses that best fit the talent on the team. There's some things to build on with Smith, and Gailey could bring out the best in him. Fantasy owners should consider Smith a QB3 with upside.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good! The more ways they can use Jones, the better. For fantasy purposes, Jones is a very attractive option. New OC Kyle Shanahan should get the ball to Jones early and often. Jones has a current ADP of WR3 (1.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

HOU - More on RB Arian Foster's surgery

Source: Houston Chronicle - John McClain

Updating previous reports, Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (groin) is scheduled to undergo surgery Friday, Aug. 7, to reattach his groin muscle to the bone.

"He's going to miss some time, there's no doubt about that," Texans coach Bill O'Brien said. "We have no idea how much time he's going to miss. There's medical opinions that still need to take place. One thing I want to say about Arian is, you know, I feel bad for him personally. I think he came into this offseason and he really worked extremely hard, came back here and ran the conditioning test really, really well, came back in great shape, and he was practicing well. But, as a football team, it's next man up, next man up." [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant is listed as a backup to WR Antonio Brown on the team's first depth chart.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bryant is going to see the field as a starter on the outside if/when Markus Wheaton gets moved to the slot. The Steelers should have one of the league's most high-powered offenses, so Bryant is a WR3 with upside for fantasy owners.

NYG - TE Larry Donnell still learning

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Dan Graziano

New York Giants TE Larry Donnell still has work to do in order to reach his full potential, according to tight ends coach Kevin Gilbride. Gilbride said Donnell can be a special player if he's willing to do the work to get to that level. Gilbride added that Donnell's blocking techniques have improved, but his route-running isn't up to par yet.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Donnell first has to get back from his Achilles' injury. He's not cleared to run yet, but the team doesn't seem too concerned with his status for Week 1. As a security blanket for Eli Manning, Donnell is a low-end TE2 with upside for fantasy owners.

MIA - WR Jarvis Landry could be a deep threat

Source: The Miami Herald - Barry Jackson

Miami Dolphins WR Jarvis Landry has a chance to become a deep threat for the team this season, according to head coach Joe Philbin. 'I think he's got a chance to do that,' Philbin said. 'He's lined up in a variety of spots. He's done some things outside. I think his natural home base is still inside, but he certainly has shown the ability. He's a real quality route runner. He can run different routes that you want on the outside. The beauty of him is he doesn't slow down when he's coming out of cuts. So if he can get on top of the DB (defensive back), he doesn't waste any time whatsoever. That's really, to me, is what makes him effective.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We like Landry, but he's not exactly a speed demon. With guys already on the roster like Kenny Stills and DeVante Parker, Landry would be best suited working underneath routes. We see Landry as a WR3 with upside. His current ADP is WR25 (5.07) in 12-team PPR leagues.

WAS - WR DeSean Jackson to miss a few weeks

Washington Redskins WR DeSean Jackson (shoulder) is expected to miss a few weeks because of Grade 2 shoulder sprain, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Normally we would consider moving a player down because of a preseason injury, and our Dr. Jene Bramel will weigh in on how this affects Jackson's chances of re-injury in-season, but Jackson is a veteran who has overcome nicks and bumps to have good years in the past. His ADP is already very low for a player who led the league in 40+ yard pass plays by a good margin while playing with one of the worst QB situations in the league.

Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy's (toe) toe injury is of no concern, and he looked great in practice Thursday, Aug. 6.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Great news for the Bills here. The team needs McCoy healthy in order to lead the way on the ground. He's going to get plenty of work in Rex Ryan's run-heavy offense.

Not a big deal here. Murray should be back when he's feeling better.

NYJ - Teammates says QB Geno Smith is starter

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets QB Geno Smith is absolutely the starting quarterback for the Jets, according to WR Brandon Marshall.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ryan Fitzpatrick is there is Smith collapses, which is certainly within the realm of possibilities. Still, Smith's running ability and new offensive coordinator Chan Gailey's ability to make chicken salad out of worse QBs in the past gives hope of some fantasy value this year. Fitzpatrick had the best year of his career with Gailey, so Marshall and Eric Decker's values should stay intact if Smith bombs.

NE - QB Jimmy Garoppolo takes starter reps

    Source: ESPNBoston.com - Mike Reiss

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo took most of the first-team repetitions in practice Wednesday, Aug. 5, with QB Tom Brady essentially receiving the night off. Garoppolo delivered a mixed bag with about a 50% completion rate, according to reporters charting throws.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Patriots have to prepare Garoppolo to be the starter during Brady's suspension (if it sticks). The second-year quarterback has a lightning-quick release, but he struggled under duress in college. We'll see if he can improve and impress this year in camp and the preseason.

DEN - QB Peyton Manning throwing harder?

    Source: 9News.com - Mike Klis

Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning has had more zip on his throws, according to WR Demaryius Thomas.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Manning was throwing some deep passes out at Broncos practice today. He's energized by the new Gary Kubiak system, and Manning should be a low-end QB1 for fantasy owners this year. Kubiak's offense is going to feature the rushing attack early and often. Manning will be using play-action passing and shorter passes (with a few deep shots) to move the ball through the air.

OAK - RB Latavius Murray taking all starter reps

Source: San Francisco Chronicle - Vic Tafur

Oakland Raiders RB Latavius Murray has taken all of the first-team repetitions and has looked powerful running, according to beat writer Vic Tafur. 'The biggest improvement has been in his explosiveness and his conditioning,' Murray's trainer Vinny Scollo told Syracuse.com. 'Last year, we really had to taper the workouts and work around his injury. This year, his conditioning, his wind, is 100 percent there.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If you were already inclined to take Murray, then this should make that a slam dunk. The Raiders offense and potential for Roy Helu to take a lot of passing down work looms, but what Murray flashed against the stiff Chiefs run defense last year is enough to merit consideration in the 5th/6th round, and maybe even the fourth.

NYG - QB Eli Manning worked on arm strength

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Dan Graziano

Updating a previous report, New York Giants QB Eli Manning put in hard work in the offseason to make sure his arm was stronger this year. He worked with baseball coaches on his throwing motion and tried other new techniques. Manning's warmup routine is now different; he's not throwing the ball in warmups but instead doing exercises to warm up his shoulder and upper body. Manning has looked good in practices and hadn't thrown an interception until Thursday, Aug. 6. 'I think last year, I felt good,' Manning said. 'I think I feel better right now than I did at this time last year. So I'm excited about the way my body feels, my health and the way everything is kind of set up. Hopefully I can keep it that way.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're interested to see what Manning looks like in his second season under OC Ben McAdoo. With a healthy Victor Cruz and second-year superstar Odell Beckham Jr, Manning could have a strong season throwing the ball. He's a low-end QB1 with upside for fantasy owners.

NE - TE Scott Chandler seeing a lot of work

    Source: NFL.com

New England Patriots TE Scott Chandler is seeing a lot of targets in training camp and could be a scary complement to TE Rob Gronkowski in two-tight end packages.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Chandler is an interesting player to watch, but we're not going to call him a "scary" complement. Keep him on your waiver-wire speed dial as Chandler has good size and soft hands. He can be a threat in the red zone, and Chandler could be involved more than people think.

TEN - TE Delanie Walker exits early

Tennessee Titans TE Delanie Walker (hand) left practice Thursday, Aug. 6, with an apparent injury to his left hand.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No word on the severity right now. Walker could be in for a lot of targets from rookie QB Marcus Mariota this season. If healthy, he's a low-end TE1 for fantasy owners.

DAL - RB Darren McFadden could return Saturday

Source: The Dallas Morning News - Brandon George

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (hamstring) could make his debut at training camp as early as Saturday, Aug. 8, after dealing with a strained hamstring. He said he has done some running and cutting without any setbacks the last few days. The Cowboys don't practice Friday, Aug. 7. 'I did a little straight-line running and a little cutting, so I got a good feel for it. It's one of those things where the trainers want to make sure I can put a couple of days back to back before they throw me back out there. I'm just looking forward to getting back out there on the field. No soreness or swelling the next day, so definitely a good sign for me.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hey everybody! McFadden could be back on the field, but for how long? The guy used to be an incredibly talented runner, but his pro career has been knocked off track by multiple injuries over the years.

TB - TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins blocking better

    Source: PewterReport.com

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins has improved his blocking and makes for a difficult matchup on the outside, according to head coach Love Smith.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Seferian-Jenkins is a mountain of man who happens to play tight end. He's another big target for rookie QB Jameis Winston. We could see Seferian-Jenkins finish the year as a low-end TE1. Fantasy owners can get him as a low-end TE2 with upside in fantasy draft. He's going off the board at TE19 (13.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

OAK - RB Trent Richardson battled pneumonia

    Source: ESPN.com - Bill Williamson

Updating a previous report, Oakland Raiders RB Trent Richardson (illness) said he battled pneumonia for a couple of weeks before the start of training camp, but he's feeling fine now and practiced for the first time Thursday, Aug. 6. Head coach Jack Del Rio said Richardson is down in the 220-pound rage after being sick, after weighing a reported 240 pounds last season. Richardson is averaging 3.3 yards per carry in his career.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Richardson needs to get healthy, stay healthy and start playing up to his potential. Undrafted RB Michael Dyer has put pressure on Richardson's roster spot with a strong first week of camp.

    Source: SI.com - Peter King

Chicago Bears WR Kevin White (shin) is expected to start jogging Monday, Aug. 10, and the team is not worried about his status for the start of the regular season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team may not be worried, but fantasy owners need to be a little worried. White is going to be behind when he eventually does get on the field and is able to practice with his team.

JAX - TE Julius Thomas limited Thursday

Source: The Florida Times-Union - Gene Frenette

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (back) missed the last part of practice Thursday, Aug. 6, because of tightness in his back.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Thomas is a fantastic player when healthy, but fantasy owners need to remember that he's never played a full 16-game season in his four-year career. His numbers should go down from what he posted in Denver, but Thomas still has the ability and the opportunity to be a TE1 for fantasy owners.

BUF - WR Sammy Watkins leaves practice early

    Source: BuffaloBills.com - Chris Brown

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (hip) left practice early Thursday, Aug. 6, because of soreness in his surgically repaired hip. Head coach Rex Ryan said he does not believe Watkins is dealing with anything serious.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Watkins is already a redraft avoid player at his ADP because of the Bills likelihood to run the ball even more than the Jets did last year under Rex Ryan and no quality QB on the roster to speak of. One day Watkins could become a fantasy WR1 we envisioned when watching him at Clemson, but that day is not coming this year. Any potential for Watkins to be as banged up as he was last year only helps the case to let someone else take him.

BAL - WR Breshad Perriman remains out

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens WR Breshad Perriman (knee) is not participating in practice Thursday, Aug. 6. Perriman suffered the injury during the first day of practice and has missed the last six practices.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Perriman is trying to overtake Kamar Aiken and Marlon Brown (who is also banged up) to start opposite Steve Smith. This missed time can't be helping, but if he gets back on the practice field soon and impresses, we won't hold it against him in our rankings.

NYJ - RB Zac Stacy on outside looking in?

Source: The Star-Ledger - Darryl Slater

New York Jets RB Zac Stacy is competing with RBs Chris Ivory, Stevan Ridley (knee) and Bilal Powell for one of the running back spots on the 53-man roster in training camp and the preseason. According to beat writer Darryl Slater, Stacy is not projected to make the cut, although it could depend on the health of Ridley.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Stacy is a plodding runner who isn't an exciting option as a starter. The Rams moved him to the Jets earlier this year in exchange for a seventh-round pick. He's no lock to make the final roster, even with Ridley banged up.

    Saturday Update

HOU - RB Arian Foster will go on IR
    Source: NFL.com
Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (groin), who had successful groin surgery Friday, Aug. 7, will be placed on the short-term Reserve/Injured list, meaning he'll be eligible to return in Week 8.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Alfred Blue went from a round fifteen option to a round nine option and could rise further as the season approaches. We see him as an OK low-end RB3 but he could get an awful lot of work given the shaky nature of the quarterbacks in Houston.

ARI - No timetable for WR Michael Floyd

    Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals WR Michael Floyd (fingers) is dealing with a unique injury, so there is no timetable for his return, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners need to watch this situation closely. Arians did say Week 1 is a realistic target for Floyd. We'll have to see if Floyd can get back by that time.

STL - QB Nick Foles signs extension

    Source: StLouisRams.com - Myles Simmons

St. Louis Rams QB Nick Foles signed a two-year extension with the team Friday, Aug. 7. Financial terms were not disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's still somewhat baffling that the Philadelphia Eagles dumped Foles for a never healthy Sam Bradford, but it's Chip Kelly's world, we're just living in it. Unfortunately for Foles, this is not a great situation to land in and we don't see him having a positive fantasy impact this year.

STL - RB Todd Gurley unlikely for preseason

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

St. Louis Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) is coming along slowly from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, and head coach Jeff Fisher said it's unlikely that Gurley plays in the preseason. Fisher said Gurley already has a grasp of the offense and has praised him for his talent. Fisher expects Gurley and RB Tre Mason to rotate in the regular season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This isn't going to make you more likely to draft him. In dynasty, Gurley is still ticketed for big big things. His talent could be overwhelming once he is unleashed and change the Rams plans, but in redraft it looks like Gurley's impact will be delayed and his full arrival date is unknown. He's a boom/bust RB2 pick in the 4th or 5th.

WAS - TE Jordan Reed ready for healthy season

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins TE Jordan Reed spent the offseason changing his eating habits in order to help him stay healthy in 2015. He missed seven games in his rookie season, five games last year and was out this spring after a knee issue that required surgery. Reed has cut out bread, fried foods and sweets from his diet and is only eating grilled or baked chicken. He is also making an effort to stretch more before workouts. Reed feels like he can finally play a full season in 2015. Catching passes hasn't been an issue for Reed, but blocking has been his weak suite, and the Redskins often use TEs Logan Paulsen and Niles Paul in their two-tight end sets, especially if it's a run play. Reed feels that he is stronger and has more burst after strengthening the left side of his body and leg, and he's also added eight pounds of muscle but is leaner.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Reed is still one of the most fragile players in the league by track record, and Niles Paul was re-signed by the team this offseason, indicating a strong 2TE approach. Reed is an upside TE2 to target late in PPR leagues, but that's it.

CLE - WR Dwayne Bowe misses scrimmage

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns WR Dwayne Bowe (hamstring) did not participate in the scrimmage Friday, Aug. 7.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bowe was inconsistent in Kansas City, so it's not all that great to see him unable to get on the field in Cleveland. We're not sure who the quarterback will be, so chemistry isn't quite a concern yet, but will be soon. Even if he is 100 percent healthy this year, the lack of a stable quarterback, the threat of a heavy run game and his own inability to reach his potential make him no more than a WR5.

KC - RB Jamaal Charles limited Friday

    Source: ESPN.com - Adam Teicher

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles sat out most of the contact drills during practice Friday, Aug. 7, because the team wants to keep him fresh.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Even after adding Jeremy Maclin, the Chiefs know their strength lies with Charles. Knowing this, we expect him to be a top five RB1 this season with plenty of carries. So we're completely fine with keeping him fresh.

JAX - QB Blake Bortles says he's improving

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Lindsay H. Jones

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles is confident that he is improving heading into his second full season in the NFL. He's learning how to make better throws and decisions while learning the team's new offense. He threw 17 interceptions in his rookie year and was sacked a league-high 55 times. Bortles said his arm became tired down the stretch last year and his mechanics disintegrated. As a result, he trained with quarterbacks coach Tom House in the offseason to refine his mechanics while focusing on shortening his release. Head coach Gus Bradley can tell that the improved mechanics have given Bortles more confidence. In practice Friday, Aug. 7, Bortles threw touchdowns on three straight throws in the red zone.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's an uphill climb for this Jaguars team as there are still too many shaky parts of the offense. That said, the Jaguars aren't as far off as they once were and the potential to be solid is coming. Just not this year. Bortles has been a bit streaky in practice so far, so we know he still has a ways to go. At best he is an exceedingly low end QB2 or a decent QB3 in single starter leagues.

ATL - RB Devonta Freeman may miss a few weeks

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman (hamstring) is expected to miss at least two weeks because of a hamstring injury, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Freeman is competing for the starting job, but he's going to be out of action for some time. This injury may linger if the team doesn't let it heal properly. We'll see if Freeman can beat out rookie Tevin Coleman for the starting job when both are healthy enough to compete.

OAK - WR Amari Cooper praised by OC

    Source: ESPN.com - Bill Williamson

Oakland Raiders WR Amari Cooper was praised by offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave for his hard work in drills and attention in meetings. 'I know we have a good one there, so we're thankful to have him,' Musgrave said Thursday, Aug. 6.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cooper is one of our favorite rookie receivers this year. He's quick, fast, strong and a crisp route-runner. Cooper should be the focal point of the Raiders passing game in 2015. Fantasy owners should consider him a low-end WR2 with upside.

CLE - QB Johnny Manziel has solid scrimmage

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel went 9-for-11 for 93 yards and two touchdowns during the team's scrimmage Friday, Aug. 7. Manziel was expected to play with the first-team offense during the scrimmage but did not receive any snaps with that unit.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If Manziel cannot manage to steal the job from Josh 'One Good Season' McCown, there's some trouble to be found. McCown is an average quarterback on his best day, so Manziel should be in the mix. The reality is, this is a team with a good offensive line and backfield and barely any receiving talent. Add in middling quarterbacks and there's no guy under center who should be on your fantasy team.

CLE - RB Duke Johnson out Friday

    Source: NFL.com

Cleveland Browns RB Duke Johnson (hamstring) will not take part in the team's scrimmage Friday, Aug. 7.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We still like Isaiah Crowell the best, but it's hard to fathom any of these players breaking out any time soon. The Browns split the load between Crowell and Terrance West a lot last year, hurting production for both. We expect much the same thing here limiting Crowell to Rb3 status and Johnson RB4 or RB5, especially hurt.

Detroit Lions RB Joique Bell (Achilles', knee) has been working on a side field and could be activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list in the near future. Bell has been sprinting, cutting and doing cone drills during workouts.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bell is getting closer to a return, but rookie Ameer Abdullah has already been wowing observers in Detroit. We could see the Lions ease Bell into action so as not to aggravate either injury.

NE - RB LeGarrette Blount leaves practice

    Source: NESN.com - Doug Kyed

New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount (knee) left practice early Friday, Aug. 7, because of an apparent injury. Blount limped off the field and appeared to be favoring his right knee.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Blount has talent, but off-field issues and injuries have held him back at times during his pro career. We'll have to find out more about this injury, but it's the super-secretive Patriots so good luck with that.

TEN - QB Marcus Mariota struggles Friday

    Source: ESPN.com - Paul Kuharsky

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota went 9-for-17 during team drills at practice Friday, Aug. 7, which included four straight incompletions. He has gone 77-for-119 in team drills during training camp but still has not thrown an interception.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Can we stop with the "zero interceptions" thing? It would be better for him to make mistakes in practice and learn from them. The struggles will be there for the rookie, but he's still got developmental upside. He's a great athlete, smart and is known as being coachable. We'll see if Mariota can get used to huddling, operating from under center and diagnosing defenses as he drops back.

    Sunday Update

HOU - More on RB Arian Foster's surgery
Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Updating previous reports, Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (groin) may only miss four to six weeks of the regular season, according to sources with knowledge of the situation not authorized to speak publicly. He was slated to miss two to three months of the season for surgery to reattach the groin to the bone, but the Houston Chronicle suggests he underwent a type of sports hernia surgery. 'Dr. Meyers performs a Bassini-type hernia repair that he has performed on hundreds of professional athletes who have suffered a sports hernia,' said Dr. Bert Mandelbaum, an orthopedic surgeon at Santa Monica Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Group in California who does not treat Foster. 'We published an article together in the '90s regarding its effectiveness. Foster should be back to full form in two to three months depending on the details and spectrum of his injury.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The news about Foster's recovery is moving in a positive direction. Originally thought to be a 3-6 month recovery, now the optimism is growing that Foster is much closer to a return. Even with this news/speculation, Foster is still a candidate to begin the season on the I.R./Designated to Return List.

CHI - OC talks WR Eddie Royal

Source: Chicago Tribune - Dan Wiederer

Chicago Bears WR Eddie Royal could have a Wes Welker kind of impact on the Bears' offense this season, according to offensive coordinator Adam Gase. Gase said Royal has a special explosiveness that a lot of inside receivers don't have, making him a threat at all three levels of an opposing defense.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

To have a Welker-esque fantasy impact, Royal would need to be an offense with a better QB. He does have a great history with Jay Cutler. He does offer WR3/Flex upside in PPR leagues, but that's still a relatively low ceiling and only worth a pick in the 10th or later. Royal is worth more consideration in deeper leagues with thinner waiver wires to cover byes and injuries.

IND - RB Dan Herron is No. 2 RB

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Wells

Indianapolis Colts RB Dan Herron is currently the primary backup to RB Frank Gore.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rookie Josh Robinson is a souped-up but lighter Mike Tolbert. His pass blocking needs to improve before the Colts trust him, but he could be a more dynamic back than Herron. We'll be watching this because starter Frank Gore is in his age 32 season, but remember he hasn't missed a game in the last four years.

DAL - RB Darren McFadden not guaranteed spot

    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden could be released if he does not perform like the team expects during training camp and the preseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McFadden seems worth a flyer because of his past success, Jerry Jones' love of all things Razorbacks, and the quality and open nature of the Dallas running game, but perhaps UDFA Gus Johnson or boom/bust talent Lache Seastrunk will usurp the roster spot and late-round lottery ticket status soon. Don't be surprised if a free agent veteran is brought in to replace McFadden if he can't get on the field.

CLE - RB Isaiah Crowell to start?

    Source: ESPNCleveland.com - Tony Grossi

Cleveland Browns RB Isaiah Crowell likely will be the starting running back when the regular season begins, in the opinion of Tony Grossi, of ESPNCleveland.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The big variable here is how much he'll share on early downs with Terrance West and Duke Johnson. If Crowell can secure the majority of early down carries, his value will be more like a fourth-fifth rounder running behind one of the best offensive lines in football.

PHI - Coach praises WR Nelson Agholor

Source: NJ Advance Media - Mark Eckel

Philadelphia Eagles WR Nelson Agholor has improved every day and plays bigger than his size, according to head coach Chip Kelly. Kelly added, 'He's got an extra gear that a lot of guys don't have. I think when he beats press coverage and takes off, you've got to make sure you understand how fast he is. I think sometimes we have underthrown him a couple times, just because we know how well he can accelerate. He does a great job of catching the ball and getting north and south and getting up the field. We've been really pleased with him the last three days.''

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jordan Matthews' 2014 numbers are attainable for Agholor if he gets the lion's share of the deep targets vacated by Jeremy Maclin. He's an upside play in the seventh round or later.

MIA - TE Jordan Cameron catches a pair of TDs

    Source: ESPN.com - James Walker

Miami Dolphins TE Jordan Cameron caught a pair of touchdowns during a scrimmage Friday, Aug. 7.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hopefully this isn't a sign of problems on the defensive side. Much of the staff has Cameron as a low-end TE1, but a few are less confident due to the lack of opportunities for tight ends in Miami's offense and Cameron's inability to stay on the field.

DEN - Anderson's shoulder bang minor

    Source: Cecil Lammey - ESPNDenver.com and Footballguys.com

Cecil Lammey, from ESPN Denver and Footballguys.com, reports that Denver Broncos running back C.J. Anderson's shoulder bang is considered minor. Head coach Gary Kubiak said after practice, “He got his shoulder banged and he wanted to go, but I told Greek [Head Athletic Trainer Steve Antonopulos] to take him out.”

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

They are going to be cautious with all injuries at training camp. The Broncos are going to use Anderson as their bellcow back this year, and fantasy owners should be excited about his potential. His current ADP is a late-first or early-second round pick in most fantasy leagues. With Anderson missing the end of practice, Montee Ball received the first-team reps.

BUF - WR Sammy Watkins returns

Source: The Buffalo News - Jay Skurski

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (hip) returned to practice Saturday, Aug. 8.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We believe in his upside as a player, but the bad quarterback situation in Buffalo is going to hold his production back. Fantasy owners should consider Watkins a low-end WR2 with upside.

NYG - WR Victor Cruz doubtful for preseason game

Source: The Star-Ledger - John Munson

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (knee) is doubtful to play in the preseason game Friday, Aug. 14. He will practice in team drills but won't partake in scrimmages. Cruz hasn't missed a practice yet in camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'd be shocked if Cruz played in any preseason games. All news has been positive about Cruz during his recovery, and the team won't want to jeopardize his return by playing him in an early preseason game.

BAL - WR Steve Smith missing practice

    Source: CSNBaltimore.com - Clifton Brown

Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith is out of practice Saturday, Aug. 8, for the second straight day.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Usually, veterans will get one day off. This is something to watch as Smith gets a second day in a row. Stay tuned.

CIN - WR Marvin Jones practices

Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Paul Dehner Jr.

Cincinnati Bengals WR Marvin Jones (hamstring) returned to practice Saturday, Aug. 8. Jones had been sitting because of a sore right hamstring.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones missed all of last year due to an ankle injury, and the team should get a real boost with him back on the football field. We like him as a WR5/WR6 with upside for fantasy owners. Jones is a late-round pick who could end up in your lineup as a bye-week or injury filler. In 2013, Jones as the 21st-best fantasy receiver, largely due to his 10 touchdown catches.

DAL - WR Dez Bryant doesn't practice

Source: The Dallas Morning News - Brandon George

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (hamstring) did not practice Saturday, Aug. 8, due to a strained hamstring, according to head coach Jason Garrett.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Cowboys just gave Bryant a new long-term deal earlier this offseason. They'll be cautious with him as he's a bit banged up. Bryant is considered day-to-day.

DAL - RB Lance Dunbar not on field

    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Dallas Cowboys RB Lance Dunbar (ankle) was not on the practice field Saturday, Aug. 8. Dunbar has been dealing with a sprained ankle, but head coach Jason Garrett has already said he doesn't think the injury is serious.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We want to see Dunbar get on the field before his Week 3 preseason game to truly be not worried about drafting him. He's still so cheap with a terrific ceiling because of the Dallas running game that you have to take him late while we wait for him to take the field again.

IND - Indy has competition for No. 3 WR job

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Wells

Indianapolis Colts WRs Donte Moncrief, Phillip Dorsett and Duron Carter are candidates of the team's No. 3 wide receiver job, and all three have had positive moments during training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The most likely outcome is probably all three being used in the role at times, and no one absorbing all of the value of the #3 role. Moncrief is in the lead and is worth drafting on the upside in case of an injury to a starter, and any of the three could have fantasy relevance in this offense if their roles get large enough. The Colts passing offense should be the most productive in the league this year.

DEN - WR Emmanuel Sanders sitting out

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeff Legwold

Denver Broncos WR Emmanuel Sanders (hamstring) is not participating in practice Saturday, Aug. 8.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sanders' hamstring injury was reportedly not serious, but we'll still breath a sigh of relief and feel better about taking him near his 3rd/4th round ADP when he returns to the practice field.

NE - RB LeGarrette Blount has sprained MCL
Source: The Boston Globe - Shalise Manza Young
New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount (knee) has a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee, according to sources. Blount is expected to be ready for the beginning of the regular season, though. RBs Jonas Gray and Brandon Bolden stand to receive more carries with Blount sidelined.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Gray looked just as bad as Blount before getting in the doghouse for missing a meeting. He has a clean slate this year by all accounts, and he'll start Week 1 while Blount is suspended. He just moved up in your late-round priority list.
