NFL Player News - Week of July 13th

    Courtesy of Footballguys.com

TB - QB Jameis Winston grasping offense quickly

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston understanding of the offense already stands out, according to TE Luke Stocker. 'What is impressive is the speed that Jameis has picked everything up -- from the huddle to the cadence to the checks to the audibles,' Stocker said. 'He's picked everything up so fast.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Winston is a highly intelligent player with excellent commitment to team and work ethic, so it's not a surprise that he's picking things up quickly. He should at least sustain the level of productivity in the passing game that Josh McCown and Mike Glennon established last year.

KC - RB Jamaal Charles the total package

    Source: NFL.com - Bucky Brooks

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles has ranked in the top three in total touchdowns in each of the last two seasons, recording a league-high 19 in 2013 and 14 last year.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Charles was by his own admission banged up last year with nagging injuries that affected him for most of the season. If it's a sign of his body wearing down as he turns 29 before the new year, then he'll be a disappointing top 5 pick in fantasy drafts. If it was an aberration and Charles is closer to 100% for more of this year, he'll make anyone who takes him early in the first very happy.

BUF - TE Charles Clay to be moving around

    Source: BuffaloBills.com - Chris Brown

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay said he will be lining up at different positions this season under offensive coordinator Greg Roman. 'Whether it's running routes or catching as receivers out of the backfield, he does a good job of moving guys around,' Clay said. 'I can't think of any position where I'm lined up at more than another. The receivers will tell you the same thing. They're moving around as much as I am.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Clay has the ability to be a mid to low fantasy TE1 in an adequate to good pass offense, but Buffalo is far from that. Even if their QB to be named later has exceeds expectations, Clay will still have to fight with Sammy Watkins, Robert Woods, Percy Harvin, and two very good passcatching backs for targets in a run-first offense. He's probably not worth a pick in typical leagues, but he could help teams in a bind for a one-week TE play during the season.

CLE - WR Andrew Hawkins may make impact

    Source: NFL.com - Bucky Brooks

Cleveland Browns WR Andrew Hawkins could have an impact this season since offensive coordinator John DeFilippo's offense features more catch-and-run opportunities.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hawkins is a decent bet to lead the team in receptions again this year unless you think Dwayne Bowe was being held back by Alex Smith in a way that he won't be held back by Josh McCown. While Hawkins isn't going to be anything more than bye/injury/emergency fodder in PPR leagues for typical redraft fantasy football, he can help as a safe 6-8 pt weekly floor late pick in best ball PPR leagues.

BAL - WR Marlon Brown ready for the next step?

Source: The Baltimore Sun - Childs Walker

Baltimore Ravens WR Marlon Brown worked out four days a week during the offseason and watched more film than in the past. He has impressed wide receivers coach Bobby Engram, 'You really saw Marlon come on strong the last half of last season, and we see the same thing in OTAs and minicamp,' he said. 'He's made a lot of plays, and he understands multiple positions. He's a worker and he's a technician who's learning how to continue to hone his craft.' Head coach John Harbaugh also noted, 'He's just a really gifted player. Like I said, I have high hopes for him. I really want to see him break out.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brown was a vaunted high school recruit who never panned out because of injuries. He has shown some of that promise since signing with the Ravens as a UDFA in 2013, and could be featured in the red zone this year. If first-round pick Breshad Perriman isn't ready, Brown could even start for this team. He should be on your waiver wire speed dial list.

MIA - WR DeVante Parker still on track for Week 1

Source: The Miami Herald - Barry Jackson

Miami Dolphins WR DeVante Parker (foot) remains on track to be ready for Week 1 and 'everything is perfect' in his recovery from foot surgery, according to Parker's agent James Gould. Gould noted it is still too early to know if Parker will be available for preseason games.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Parker is the best candidate to have an Odell Beckham-esque delayed impact this year, albeit not to the degree Beckham did. He's an outstanding player at the catch point who can make things happen after the circus catch. Greg Jennings should be swept out of the top three receivers for Parker as soon as he is ready.

GB - Green Bay looking at tight end market?

    Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky

The Green Bay Packers could sign a free-agent tight end before training camp opens Thursday, July 30. Free-agent TE Jermaine Gresham (Bengals) is considered a candidate.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gresham has also been a player of interest for the Raiders and Saints. He might have marginal fantasy value if he lands in Green Bay or New Orleans.

HOU - RB Arian Foster has nose for end zone

    Source: NFL.com - Bucky Brooks

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster has scored 62 total touchdowns in 66 games since taking over as the primary running back, including 13 in 13 games last year.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Foster scores like an elite RB1 any time he is on the field, but knowing how many games he will miss or be limited for in a given year is the hitch. He is rightfully going in the late first/early second round because of injury risk, but Foster will be projected as top 5 RB in any week that he is anything but a game-time decision.

SEA - RB Marshawn Lynch a TD machine

    Source: NFL.com - Bucky Brooks

Seattle Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch has scored at least 12 touchdowns in four straight seasons, including a career-high 17 last year.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lynch is a feature back on a run-heavy/strong defensive team who is an excellent receiver out of the backfield. This is one of the most ideal situations in fantasy football, and have proven year after year that he can maximize it. Consider him one of the safest first-round RB picks this year.

CIN - RB Jeremy Hill urged to embrace hype
    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra
Cincinnati Bengals RB Jeremy Hill has been told to embrace the hype surrounding him in 2015 by offensive coordinator Hue Jackson. 'To me, if a guy wants to be great, he's got to relish that,' Jackson said. 'He's got to want that and then go exceed it. That would be my challenge to (Hill). I expect him to exceed whatever the expectation is about him.'
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Hill is going to be an RB1 when the Bengals control a game, but he might not even be a low RB2 when they don't. He's going at a low RB1 price in the second round, which means taking him is a bet on the Bengals to have a good season unless you are overwhelming by Hill's talent.

TB - TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins uncoverable

    Source: PewterReport.com - Mark Cook

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins was virtually uncoverable in organized team activities and minicamps. If Seferian-Jenkins can stay healthy he'll be heavily utilized in offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter's system.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Many of you many be looking to find a "sleeper" at the tight end position in your draft. Seferian-Jenkins could be that guy. He's a TE2 who could be used effectively in some sort of tight end rotation. Seferian-Jenkins is a huge target who can be a force in the red zone. Quarterback Jameis Winston is a fearless rookie who is not afraid to throw it up to let a big man like Seferian-Jenkins go get it. Right now, his ADP is TE19 (13.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

    DEN - Extension for Osweiler?

    Source: Cecil Lammey - ESPNDenver.com, Footballguys.com

Cecil Lammey, from ESPN Denver and Footballguys.com, reports the general feeling is that Denver Broncos QB Brock Osweiler could get a contract extension with a strong performance in the preseason. Osweiler is entering the final year of his contract, but he was drafted as the heir apparent behind Peyton Manning.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Dynasty owners need to take note. Osweiler seems like a perfect fit for the Gary Kubiak system. In fact, CB Chris Harris compared Osweiler to Ravens QB Joe Flacco because of his size (6'7") and rocket arm. Osweiler is athletic enough to run the bootleg, and he's made improvements to his release point and footwork as a pro. Taking over an offense with weapons like Emmanuel Sanders and Demaryius Thomas (provided he's signed long term) would certainly boost Osweiler's potential. Stay tuned.

KC - QB Alex Smith working with feet

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Lindsay H. Jones
Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has been focusing on footwork and technique this offseason, particularly with his downfield passes. 'For me, footwork is something that never goes away,' Smith said. 'You're constantly trying to get better with your feet.'
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
It's not his footwork that is the problem. Smith has been hesitant to attack the edges of the defense as evidenced by his league low of 5.58 air yards per attempt in 2014. Sure, the team added Jeremy Maclin to upgrade the wide receiving corps but Smith needs to be more bold as a passer in order for the move to really pay off.

TEN - Offset language for QB Marcus Mariota?
    Source: ESPN.com - Paul Kuharsky
Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota's rookie contract will contain offset language, according to team president Steve Underwood. Underwood said it's important to have the offset language in place because it sets the precedent for the next round of players' contracts.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Titans really can't afford for their rookie quarterback (and starter) to miss any time in training camp. He played in a wide open spread offense in college at Oregon, and the transition to the NFL will come with a steep learning curve. The Titans are trying to prevent Mariota from double dipping in the event he is released before his rookie contract expires. Number one overall pick Jameis Winston agreed to offset language in his deal, but Mariota doesn't seem to be up for that. Stay tuned.

CHI - Chicago excited to have RB Jeremy Langford

    Source: ChicagoFootball.com - Arthur Arkush

Chicago Bears rookie RB Jeremy Langford offers the Bears speed they didn't have last season. Langford ran a 4.4 second 40-yard dash in the NFL Combine this offseason. Langford was taken in the fourth round and will compete with RBs Jacquizz Rodgers, Ka'Deem Carey, Daniel Thomas and Senorise Perry for backup duties to RB Matt Forte.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bears should be excited about Langford because he's a good back with all-around ability. He's a good receiver out of the backfield, and Langford has the speed and creativity to make big plays in the open field. Langford is not going to push the pile, but he could work effectively as a change-of-pace back.

CIN - WR A.J. Green will play without deal

    Source: NFL.com - Conor Orr

Updating a previous post, Cincinnati Bengals WR A.J. Green has decided to play the 2015 season without a new contract.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Green is playing on the fifth-year option of his rookie deal, and he's set to make just over $10 million in 2015. The Bengals could use the franchise tag on Green next offseason if they can't sign him to a new long-term deal.

WAS - TE Jordan Reed still reliable?

Source: The Washington Post - Mike Jones

Washington Redskins TE Jordan Reed (knee) was held out of offseason activities due to knee surgery, but he is expected to participate in training camp later this month. Reed has also battled issues with his hamstring, hip, thigh, thumb and a concussion.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Reed is so injury prone that even Tony Moeaki thinks he needs to change his routine. Fantasy owners know that Reed has talent, but his propensity to get injured makes him a risky addition. He's worth taking a chance on as a late-round flier in re-draft leagues. Right now, Reed is going off the board at TE20 (13.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

GB - TE Andrew Quarless likely not facing jail time

    Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky

Green Bay Packers TE Andrew Quarless probably won't be imprisoned since he was charged with a misdemeanor and not a felony. Quarless was arrested for discharging a firearm in public, but he said it was an act caused by drunken stupidity, not violence.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ah, the old "drunken stupidity" defense. It's not quite as effective as the Chewbacca defense, but it's close. Fantasy owners aren't dialed in on Quarless (nor should they be) even if he's starting over Richard Rodgers this season.

NYG - DE Jason Pierre-Paul's rehab a mystery

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Dan Graziano

New York Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul (finger) still has had no formal contact with the team regarding his next step in rehab after having his right index finger amputated, according to a source. The recovery time from his injury is expected to be six weeks, and it's unknown if he'll train or workout in the meantime. Pierre-Paul has yet to practice in the new defense being installed by defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. He's yet to sign his $14.813 million franchise tender, but the Giants have no plans to rescind it, either. New York can put Pierre-Paul on the non-football injury list at the start of training camp if he signs the tender.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If Pierre-Paul is on the NFI list, the Giants could choose not to pay him while he's out the first six weeks of the season. That move would cost him nearly $900,000 in salary. It doesn't make sense for Pierre-Paul to sign his franchise tender unless the Giants guarantee his salary.

SEA - WR Tyler Lockett impresses

Source: The Tacoma News Tribune - Gregg Bell

Seattle Seahawks WR Tyler Lockett has impressed with his polished and subtly skilled route running. He's expected to receive a lot of work in camp in the slot and on the outside.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lockett is one of our favorite rookie receivers from this class. He makes plays in the open field, and Lockett has incredible quickness with the ball in his hands. Lockett is a fearless receiver who can run routes over the middle, and there's just a dash of Antonio Brown to his game on film. The rookie can also help as a return man. Dynasty owners should already be all over him. Re-draft owners should keep him on the waiver-wire speed dial, or pick him up as a late-round flier in deeper leagues.

SEA - TE Jimmy Graham to be used all over

Source: The Tacoma News Tribune - Gregg Bell

Seattle Seahawks TE Jimmy Graham will be used all over the field with Seattle like he was in New Orleans. 'Yeah, we do that with a lot of our guys. We like to formation and move guys around for different reasons, and Jimmy will be definitely in that mix,' offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell said. 'It's just another great playmaker. He can stretch the field, catch the ball, big target in the red zone, which will be huge for us. That may be one of the biggest things, just the size we have down there when things start to get tight.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This isn't going to be the same old Seahawks passing game. The team is going to still dominate on the ground, but they'll be able to open things up with passes if need be. Graham doesn't have the same upside he did in New Orleans, but he's still likely to be a top-5 fantasy tight end.

DAL - WR Terrance Williams earns praise

    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Dallas Cowboys WR Terrance Williams has grown a rapport with QB Tony Romo this offseason and was praised by wide receivers coach Derek Dooley. 'He's not only taken a tremendous leadership role in the group, really setting the example of how you do things, he's expanded his route inventory,' Dooley said at the conclusion of last month's minicamp. 'He's played X. He's played Z. He's played in the slot and every day he went out there and was the same player. Every route, every opportunity he had he took advantage of it. So he's made a big jump this offseason.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams has been steadily improving his game over the last two years. He's got the ability to score long touchdowns each week because of his speed. Williams has improved his concentration, and he seems to have earned the trust of QB Tony Romo. The Cowboys ground game won't be as effective this year without DeMarco Murray, so expect them to go to the air more than they did last season. Williams is a fine pick with a current ADP of WR52 (11.07) in 12-team PPR leagues.

    Thursday Update

DAL - WR Dez Bryant gets long-term contract
Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant will receive $45 million guaranteed in his new five-year, $70 million deal.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a fair price for the Cowboys...and for Bryant. He was threatening to hold out into the season, but that is not going to happen. Bryant is a top-flight fantasy wide receiver who is going off the board at the end of the first round in most drafts. Now, the market is set for this level of wide receiver. Expect contracts for A.J. Green and Julio Jones to be of a similar structure.

DEN - WR Demaryius Thomas agrees to deal

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Denver Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas has agreed to a five-year, $70 million deal that includes $43.5 million guaranteed, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wow. Things come together quickly at deadlines in the NFL. Dez Bryant got his deal, and just like that--Thomas gets his deal that is close to what his Cowboys counterpart received. The Broncos are focusing on a championship run this year, but Thomas will get to help them in the post-Manning era too. Based on reports out of Denver, it looks like most of Thomas' guaranteed money comes in the first two years of his deal.

NE - PK Stephen Gostkowski signs long-term deal

    Source: ESPNBoston.com - Mike Reiss

New England Patriots PK Stephen Gostkowski agreed to terms with the Patriots Wednesday, July 15, on a four-year deal worth around $17 million.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Arguably the best kicker in the league, Gostkowski is now the highest-paid at his position. He had already signed his one-year franchise tender, but the two sides were able to work out a long-term agreement. His current ADP is K1 (13.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

KC - OLB Justin Houston signs new deal

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston signed a six-year, $101 million deal that includes $52.5 million guaranteed Wednesday, July 15.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This contract is the richest in Chiefs franchise history and the largest deal ever for a linebacker in NFL history. Houston is certainly worth it. Over the last 43 games, Houston has 43 sacks. Last year, he nearly broke the single-season record for sacks (half a sack short) with 22 sacks. He's one of the best pass-rushers in the game, and Houston is now locked up for the long term.

DEN - WR Demaryius Thomas in elite company

    Source: DenverBroncos.com - Patrick Smyth

Denver Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas is 1-of-3 wide receivers in NFL history with 1,400 yards and 10-plus touchdowns in three consecutive seasons. Marvin Harrison and Jerry Rice are the only other two players to have accomplished the feat.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Thomas is a special wide receiver--one of the best in the game, and now he's compensated as such. He'll be catching passes from Peyton Manning over the next year or two. After that, Thomas will help the production of whatever quarterback the Broncos have under center.

DAL - WR Dez Bryant has been elite

    Source: SportsCenter

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant has tallied 5,424 yards and 56 touchdowns on 381 catches over the past five seasons.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's no question that Bryant is one of the best receivers in the game today. Bryant's three consecutive seasons of 1,000 yards receiving and 10 or more touchdowns ties a team mark set by Terrell Owens (2006-2008).

NE - QB Tom Brady will sue if given any games

Source: ABC News - Ryan Smith

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady will challenge an appeal ruling of missing any games in federal court, according to NFLPA sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The battle here is far from over. The ruling on Brady's suspension could come down before the start of training camp, and many are expecting his four-game sentence to be reduced. However, even if he's suspended only one game there is legal action to be taken by Brady after that.

DAL - RB Darren McFadden may open camp as No. 2 RB

    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (hamstring) is expected to compete for the starting running back job but will enter training camp as the No. 2 back in part because he missed some offseason workouts because of an injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McFadden has always been incredibly talented, but injuries have held him back. He could thrive behind the monstrous offensive line in Dallas, but lack of durability is always a concern. Joseph Randle is likely to be the starter with McFadden serving as his backup.

SEA - QB Russell Wilson not worried about contract

    Source: ESPN.com - Coley Harvey

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson reiterated Wednesday, July 15, he's not worried about his looming contract issue. 'I love Seattle, it's a great city,' Wilson continued. 'I'm going to play my butt off every day. That's all I know, and we'll see what happens.' Wilson's rookie contract expires at the end of the 2015 season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Contract negotiations between the Seahawks and Wilson seem to be an an impasse right now. We've heard everything from "they'll move on" to "he's going to play baseball" leading up to this point. Let's just pump the brakes on all that. The Seahawks found a franchise quarterback in the third round of the 2012 NFL draft, and they've built a champion in part because of his small price tag. Now, they'll have to pay up to keep him.

ATL - WR Julio Jones, Falcons to begin talks soon?

    Source: ESPN.com - Vaughn McClure

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones and the Falcons could begin discussions on a long-term deal in the near future now that Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant and Denver Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas have agreed to long-term extensions.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There have been reports coming out of Atlanta that indicate a deal between the Falcons and Jones could get done before the start of training camp. These new contracts for Dez Bryant and Demaryius Thomas will only help establish a road map for the Falcons and Jones to follow in negotiations.

DEN - WR Demaryius Thomas has been working

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeff Legwold

Denver Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas had already been sent the offensive playbook and practice video from organized team activities and minicamp this offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Thomas will show up at training camp and take a few days to get acclimated to the new offense. We don't believe he'll have any problem getting up to speed. With new long-term contract in hand, Thomas is a sure-fire WR1 for fantasy owners. He's got a current ADP of WR5 (1.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

ATL - RB Devonta Freeman in battle for job
    Source: AtlantaFalcons.com - Andrew Hirsh
Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman has stated he plans on being the starter, but he will be battling rookie RB Tevin Coleman for the starting job in training camp and beyond. Both appear to be schematic fits, and both have the potential to be effective in the NFL.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Freeman is a talented player, and his balanced/explosive running style is a good fit for the Kyle Shanahan offense. He's instinctive between the tackles, and Freeman can change direction without losing much speed. Freeman is competing with Coleman for the starting job, and the battle should last through training camp and the preseason. Stay tuned.

    Friday Update

SEA - QB Russell Wilson wants free-agent money
Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport
Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson has not yet entered free agency, but he does want to be paid like that is the case. He also wants a fully guaranteed contract.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If a deal does not get done by the time training camp starts, Wilson could very likely be given the franchise tag next season that could be worth around $25 million. Things may not be close at this point, but there's a long way to go.

ARI - QB Carson Palmer working out

    Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (knee) has been working out with WR John Brown in California since the end of offseason workouts and said that he not had any problems with his surgically repaired knee. QB Drew Stanton and TEs Troy Niklas and Ifeanyi Momah have also participated in some of the workouts, while Palmer said WRs Larry Fitzgerald and Michael Floyd could take part in some future workouts.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Cardinals can make a run in the postseason if Palmer is healthy. If not, the team can play great defense but they'll struggle to move the ball offensively. It sounds like Palmer's recovery has gone well, and he'll be good to go for the start of the regular season.

MIN - RB Adrian Peterson to see time on third down

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Master Tesfatsion

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson believes he will be used more often on third downs this season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Vikings will use Peterson early and often, so fantasy owners should have no hesitation drafting him in his normal (early first round) spot.

DEN - More on WR Demaryius Thomas' deal

    Source: 9News.com - Mike Klis

Updating previous reports, Denver Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas will receive $22 million in 2015. He will receive an $11 million signing bonus, $6.5 million in roster bonus and a $4.5 million salary, which are all guaranteed. He has a fully guaranteed $13 million salary in 2016. His $8.5 million salary in 2017 is guaranteed against injury, and the full salary becomes guaranteed in the league year. In 2018, he has a a $4 million option, plus an $8.5 million salary. None of this money is guaranteed. He has a $14 million salary in 2019, which isn't guaranteed. There are no incentives or escalators in the contract.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Most of the guaranteed money comes in the first two years of the contract. It just so happens that Peyton Manning has two years left on his deal--and there's a feeling he could be playing through 2016 so long as he stays healthy. Thomas is a cornerstone player who can help the team now and in the post-Manning era.

DEN - Hillman no lock on a roster spot

    Source: Andrew Mason - DenverBroncos.com

Andrew Mason, from DenverBroncos.com, reports that fourth-year running back Ronnie Hillman has to find some footing on the roster. With C.J. Anderson and Montee Ball leading the way, Juwan Thompson providing a power gear and last-year's practice-squad runner, Kapri Bibbs, showing flashes of brilliance in OTAs, he's in the thick of a crowded field and by no means has a lock on a roster spot.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This year is a make-or-break season for Hillman with the Broncos. He looked good (briefly) starting for the Broncos before getting hurt last year. Hillman may not be higher than fourth on the depth chart at this time. With Bibbs standing out in OTAs and minicamp, Hillman could be on the outside looking in when the final roster is determined.

IND - WR T.Y. Hilton may not give discount

Source: The Indianapolis Star - Stephen Holder

Indianapolis Colts WR T.Y. Hilton is not expected to give the Colts a hometown discount when the time comes for his contract extension, according to Stephen Holder of the indystar.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hilton was a third-round pick by the Colts in the 2012 NFL draft, so he's not exactly been breaking the bank in NFL terms. He's entering the final year of his rookie contract and should get a handsome payday next offseason. Hilton is unlikely to match the contracts that both Dez Bryant and Demaryius Thomas just received, but he could get rewarded with a deal appropriate for the next tier of wide receivers.

MIN - WR Jarius Wright expected to play slot position

    Source: 1500ESPN.com - Andrew Krammer

Minnesota Vikings WR Jarius Wright will probably play in the slot WR position when the Vikings are in three-receiver sets. WRs Mike Wallace and Charles Johnson would assume the outside positions.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wright has proven to be a better receiving weapon than Cordarrelle Patterson, and he's got the perfect skill set of a slot receiver. He's a quick receiver with the ability to create separation on deep routes or routes across the middle.

CLE - Browns could ride hot hand at RB

    Source: ClevelandBrowns.com - Kevin Jones

Cleveland Browns RBs Isaiah Crowell, Terrance West and Duke Johnson are expected to make up a three-headed committee this season in the backfield. Offensive coordinator John DeFilippo has said there won't be a specific method for how touches are distributed, but Crowell is expected to begin the season as the starter.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Johnson is the change-of-pace back in this rotation. He can make people miss in the open field, and he's a good receiving option out of the backfield. Crowell is the best runner of the group and can work as a battering ram for the Browns on early downs.

PIT - RB DeAngelo Williams slims down

    Source: SportingNews.com - Tadd Haislop

Pittsburgh Steelers RB DeAngelo Williams has lost some weight this offseason since head coach Mike Tomlin asked Williams to report to training camp at 220 pounds or less. Williams said he is currently at the target weight after working with a nutritionist this offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We have yet to hear about a final suspension for Le'Veon Bell. Whether it's three games or one game, Williams will be filling in for Bell while he's out. Williams gets a fresh start with the Steelers this year, and while starting for a suspended Bell he could put up RB2/flex numbers.

JAX - TE Julius Thomas should help in red zone

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike DiRocco

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas is expected to help the offense in the red zone since he caught 13 passes and nine touchdowns in the red zone last season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's a big reason why the team brought Thomas in. Last year, the Jaguars ranked last in touchdowns (13) and completion percentage (39.1%) in the red zone. Thomas is capable of creating mismatches due to his athleticism. His basketball skill set comes through in the red zone when he can box out defenders and high point passes for six points.

CHI - RB Matt Forte adds muscle

Source: Chicago Sun-Times - Blair Sheade

Chicago Bears RB Matt Forte has bulked up this offseason in order to prepare for a heavy workload this season. Forte received a lot of work in the running and passing game last season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Forte is unlikely to catch as many passes as he did last year, but he's still going to be a cornerstone for the franchise. Under offensive coordinator Adam Gase, we should see Forte get plenty of work on the ground. He's currently coming off the board near the end of the first round in fantasy drafts.

NYJ - RB Chris Ivory sees time at WR

Source: New York Post - Brian Costello

New York Jets RB Chris Ivory lined up at wide receiver at times this offseason when the team worked out of a spread formation.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Jets are going to have an incredibly creative offense under new offensive coordinator Chan Gailey. It's not a shock that they would move Ivory around the formation to create mismatches. His current ADP is RB40 (9.01) in 12-team PPR leagues.

    Saturday Update

NYG - RB roles TBD for Giants

    Source: NJ.com - Nick Powell

New York Giants RBs Rashad Jennings, Shane Vereen and Andre Williams will use training camp to determine their roles in the offense, according to running backs coach Craig Johnson. 'I think that as we get closer to games and time for the opener, we will find out more role defining roles for them,' Johnson said. 'Right now, I try to put them in every situation so I can see what they can do. I try not to say, for instance, 'Shane is only going to run the ball.' I want to see if Shane can catch the ball. I know he can, but I want to see if he can under pressure situations and vice versa. I do that for all of our guys because that way you can kind of find out what they all can do.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners stay tuned here. Jennings should be the top back, and he's got an all-purpose skill set to play on all three downs. However, Vereen is too good to keep off the field in a part-time role. He could get quite a few targets as a receiver out of the backfield. Williams is a two-down hammer with a nose for the end zone who could steal away some carries near pay dirt.

MIN - QB Teddy Bridgewater among most accurate

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Minnesota Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater was rated the No. 3 quarterback in accuracy percentage and No. 1 in accuracy under pressure last season by ProFootballFocus.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We loved the Bridgewater addition last year because the kid is smart and accurate. That certainly showed through during his rookie season, and we're expecting him to put up better numbers this year.

DEN - WR Demaryius Thomas has lofty goal

Source: The Denver Post - Troy E. Renck

Denver Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas said he wants to break the single-season receiving record this season. Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson set the record in 2012 with 1,964 yards.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're not going to say Thomas can't reach that mark, but it is certainly a lofty goal. Under Gary Kubiak, former Texans receiver Andre Johnson caught over 100 passes in five different seasons. We think Thomas could catch around 100 passes this year with double-digit touchdowns to boot.

ARI - WR John Brown working with QB

    Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals WR John Brown has been working out with QB Carson Palmer in order to perfect their timing and make sure they are on the same page.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brown is a speedy receiver who can get on top of a defense in a hurry. Working with Palmer will help the timing and chemistry that is necessary for deep targets. We like him as a WR4 for your fantasy team.

NFL - RB Chris Johnson expects to receive interest

Source: CBSSports.com - Jason La Canfora

Free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Jets) said he expects to receive interest from teams once training camp begins. Johnson said he has been working out this season in preparation for the 2015 season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If he gets some interest, it might be after Week 1...or maybe if there's injuries in training camp. Johnson looked disinterested during his time with the Jets, and he's certainly not the same player he used to be.

DEN - Will have plan for OLB Von Miller

    Source: NFL.com - Gregg Rosenthal

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller is slated to become a free agent next season. His value will supposedly be in the range of $14 million. While it is a whole season away, vice president John Elway said the Broncos will have a plan to sign Miller.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With Demaryius Thomas signed to a new long-term deal, the team can turn their attention to Miller. He should thrive in the Wade Phillips defense, and the Broncos may slap the franchise tag on him next offseason to give themselves more time to work out a deal that could be $100 million or more.

NYJ - RB Chris Ivory to be more involved in offense?

Source: New York Post - Brian Costello

New York Jets RB Chris Ivory was given fewer carries last year to limit the chances of getting injured. The Jets have a new coaching staff this year, however, and Ivory has been used more this offseason, particularly in the passing game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ivory could be a nice RB3 for fantasy owners if he's able to hold onto the starting job. The Jets are going to give Stevan Ridley (knee) a chance to prove himself when healthy. Ivory's current ADP is RB39 (8.12) in 12-team PPR leagues.

NFL - WR Reggie Wayne looking to latch on

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Wells

Free-agent WR Reggie Wayne (Colts) wants to play one more year and has spoken to teams about signing.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wayne isn't quite the player he used to be, but he could still provide a veteran presence somewhere in the league. We'll see if he can garner more interest as training camp arrives later this month.

NYG - TE Larry Donnell tapered off in 2014

    Source: USA TODAY Fantasy Sports

New York Giants TE Larry Donnell scored three of his six touchdowns in Week 4 in 2014 and failed to find the end zone over his final six games of the season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners want a more consistent Donnell this season. Year two of the Ben McAdoo offense should go a lot smoother, and we're expecting better play from the Giants passing game--especially where QB Eli Manning is concerned. That should have a trickle-down effect to Donnell and others. A healthy Victor Cruz would also help coverage weaken for Donnell.

IND - WR T.Y. Hilton could leave Indianapolis

    Source: NFL.com - Gregg Rosenthal

Indianapolis Colts WR T.Y. Hilton will likely command more than the $11 million per season that Minnesota Vikings WR Mike Wallace receives, and Hilton could receive the franchise tag or become a free agent next year as the team works on an extension for QB Andrew Luck, according to Stephen Holder of the Indianapolis Star.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's a bit soon to be predicting whether or not Hilton is going to stay with the Colts. He's not going to get Calvin Johnson (or Dez or Demaryius) money, but he'll be paid in that second-tier range. He's a favorite target of Luck, and we have a feeling the two sides will be able to get something done.

    Sunday Update

IND - RB Frank Gore should see more running room

    Source: NFL.com - Michael Fabiano

Indianapolis Colts RB Frank Gore faced eight-plus defenders in the box more than any other running back in his final season with the San Francisco 49ers.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He faced defenses like that because Colin Kaepernick doesn't exactly strike fear into the hearts of opponents (minus Dom Capers) as a passer. With Andrew Luck as his new quarterback, Gore should see defenses thinned out to defend the pass. That should lead to strong RB2 numbers from Gore this season.

CAR - RB Jonathan Stewart too frail for big role?

    Source: NFL.com - Michael Fabiano

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart led the team with 175 carries and 200 touches last year, but he missed three games and has missed a combined 20 games since 2012.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is the same old story with Stewart. The veteran back missed 10 games during 2013 due to ankle woes and then a torn MCL in his knee (week 14), but he bounced back last year...even though he missed a few games. With DeAngelo Williams now in Pittsburgh, Stewart is in line for the featured role all to himself. If healthy, Stewart is a talented RB2 with RB1 upside for fantasy owners.

PIT - WR Martavis Bryant can stretch the field

    Source: NFL.com - Bucky Brooks

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant had eight touchdown catches and five catches of 40-plus yards in 10 games as a rookie.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

His yards per catch ranked 1st in the NFL along with his longest catch (94 yards) also ranking at the top in the league. Bryant's 18.04 air yards per target ranked 1st in the NFL, and that number highlights precisely how he can attack defenses. He's a deep ball receiver with a knack for the big play and a nose for the end zone. Fantasy owners should consider him a high-end WR3 with upside in 2015.

NYJ - WR Brandon Marshall says Kyle Orton was the best QB he's played with

    Source: NFL.com - Marc Sessler

New York Jets WR Brandon Marshall said Thursday, July 16, that former QB Kyle Orton was the best quarterback he has played with in his career.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Is it an insult for Cutler, or is it just the truth? Cutler has a rocket arm, but he hasn't taken to coaching well and he makes bad decisions with the football far too often. If Orton is the best QB Marshall has played with, then Geno Smith is going to seem like Joe Namath for the veteran receiver.

MIA - WR Kenny Stills has knack for big plays

    Source: NFL.com - Bucky Brooks

Miami Dolphins WR Kenny Stills averaged 16.5 yards per catch and had 11 receptions of 40-plus yards in his first two years in the NFL.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Stills could be the deep receiver for the Dolphins that Mike Wallace just wasn't during his time in Miami. He's got the speed to take the top off the defense, and Stills does a good job of tracking passes over his shoulder. He's a WR4 with upside for fantasy owners in re-draft leagues.

CHI - WR Alshon Jeffery working out

Source: Chicago Sun-Times - Blair Sheade

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery has been working out with former teammate and now New York Jets WR Brandon Marshall. The two remain close friends and have been working out at Fit Speed Athletic Performance in Chicago.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Marshall's with another team, and now Jeffery will get to show what he can do as the top wide receiver in Chicago. We're expecting a lot from Jeffery this year under new offensive coordinator Adam Gase. Jeffery is basically playing the Demaryius Thomas role in this offense....but he doesn't have Peyton Manning as his quarterback. Even with Jay Cutler under center, we believe that Jeffery can finish near the top-10 of all fantasy receivers in 2015. Last year, Jeffery was the 12th-best WR at the end of the year.

CHI - QB Jay Cutler running out of time

Source: Chicago Sun-Times - Blair Sheade

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler may need to win in 2015 to stay in Chicago, suggests Jeff Dickerson of ESPN. Cutler has over $47 million guaranteed remaining on his contract, but the Bears could move on if Cutler struggles again in 2015.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is most certainly a make-or-break year for Cutler. He's got to start winning and playing with more consistency if he wants to stick around in Chicago.

ATL - Roddy White talks WR Julio Jones' contract

    Source: NFL.com - Marc Sessler

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones is expected to be the next big-name wide receiver to receive a multi-year extension. His fellow teammate and wide receiver, WR Roddy White, believes the Falcons should sign Jones right now. White said the longer they wait to sign Jones, the more it will cost them.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

How much more will it actually cost to wait? There has been speculation that Atlanta is going to sign Jones to an extension before the start of training camp. If that's the case, then expect his deal to be similar to what Dez Bryant and Demaryius Thomas received earlier this week.

NE - WR Julian Edelman focused on football

    Source: ESPNBoston.com - Joe McDonald

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman said he is focusing on preparing for training camp, not worrying about the looming decision regarding QB Tom Brady's suspension. 'I'm not really thinking about that right now,' Edelman said. 'I have 10 more days to get ready for camp and I'm going to worry about what I can do to put myself in the best situation to help this team.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Edelman is going to move the chains no matter what happens with Brady. He works shorter routes to get open, and we could see Edelman lead the team in targets once again this season. In PPR formats, Edelman is a low or mid-range WR2 for fantasy owners in 12-team leagues.

Washington Redskins CB DeAngelo Hall (Achilles') could be asked to restructure his current $4 million contract, according to csnwashington.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hall suffered an Achilles' injury in 2014, and Washington may not want to spend $4 million on Hall if that injury were aggravated. There's also been speculation earlier this offseason that Hall could be moved to free safety.

In the near future, Green is going to get a contract similar to what Thomas (and Dez Bryant) received earlier this week. With Green looking at around $45 million guaranteed, it's worth a call to say "thanks" to Demaryius.

CAR - Luke Keuchly extension coming?

Source: Charlotte Observer - Joseph Person

Carolina Panthers LB Luke Kuechly is a free agent after the 2015 season, and the team would like to sign him to an extension this year, according to a league source.

The $101 million contract OLB Justin Houston just signed with the Chiefs shouldn't impact Kuechly's upcoming deal. However, we're expecting Kuechly to set the market price for middle linebackers with an incredibly rich contract. A first-round pick in 2012, Kuechly had his fifth-year option picked up by the Panthers earlier this year. He's set to make $11.1 million in 2016, but the Panthers may want to lock him up with a long-term deal at some point this year.
