NFL Player News - Week of June 22nd

DEN - Window closed for RB Montee Ball?

Source: Troy E. Renck - Denver Post

Troy E. Renck, from the Denver Post, believes that the "window has closed" for Montee Ball to prove himself as the team's starter. “If C.J Anderson stays healthy, his commitment is at a new level,” Renck said. “I don’t see Ball getting the chance to prove that anymore. I think the window closed on him last year.” “It’s a bellcow offense, the back doesn’t rotate in and out.”

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Strong statements here from one of the best Broncos beat writers. Note how he also includes that Kubiak is looking for one back to be the bellcow. Ball had hoped he could end up in a 1A/1B situation this year, but that may not be the case. Anderson is the starter, he's the frontrunner and he's the better back. We'll see if he can cement the job in training camp.

STL - Only first 2 years of Gurley's contract guaranteed

Source: Ben Volin - Boston Globe

Ben Volin, from the Boston Globe, reports that only the first two years of St. Louis Rams rookie RB Todd Gurley's contract are guaranteed. If the Rams cut him because of his preexisting knee injury, then the final two years of his contract are void. That's an unusually structured deal given that Gurley was a premium pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Rams had to protect themselves due to Gurley's knee injury, and that's what they did with this contract. Gurley has superstar potential if healthy, and he's betting on himself by signing this deal. He could start the season on the PUP list, and the Rams may have to start Tre Mason at the beginning of the year. When healthy, Gurley could be eased into the starting role. His ADP of RB24 (5.05) in 12-team PPR leagues seems a bit optimistic for a player who has yet to practice this offseason. We LOVE Gurley, but proceed with caution until we know more about his injury status.

BUF - QB Taylor a sleeper in Buffalo?

Source: Ben Volin - Boston Globe

Ben Volin, from the Boston Globe, reports that Buffalo Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor is a player to watch out for in training camp. According to the report, Taylor received almost the same number of reps in OTAs and minicamp as both Matt Cassel and E.J. Manuel.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners in deeper leagues take note. Does anyone have faith in Manuel or Cassel? Taylor has spent his entire career as Joe Flacco's backup, but he accepted an deal smaller than the Broncos offered him so he could compete for a starting job and get out of the shadow of a star quarterback. Taylor is super fast, quick and has a rocket arm but his accuracy and decision making need improvement. Yes, the Bills are going to have a run-heavy offense but remember that scrambling starting quarterbacks can be valuable assets in fantasy football.

TB - WR Vincent Jackson may see time in slot

Source: The Tampa Tribune - Roy Cummings

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Vincent Jackson could line up in the slot at times this season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're all for Jackson being used in creative and different ways this season. Out of the slot, Jackson can be put in motion to get a clean release off the line of scrimmage. He should quickly become a favorite target for rookie QB Jameis Winston. His current ADP is WR29 (6.06) in 12-team PPR leagues. That's pretty good value for a player who ranked as the 14th-best fantasy WR the last time he was catching passes from a rookie (2013, Mike Glennon).

PHI - Tebow to make the final roster?

    Source: Eliot Shorr-Parks - NJ.com

Eliot Shorr-Parks, from NJ.com, believes that quarterback Tim Tebow is going to make the 53-man roster for the Eagles. It's Tebow's experience as a starter, scrambling ability and lack of turnovers that would give him the edge over Matt Barkley according to the Eagles beat writer.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We could see Tebow making the squad, and fantasy owners need to realize that he's not THAT far away from the starting job--mainly because Sam Bradford is such an injury risk. If Bradford is too banged up to play and Mark Sanchez struggles as the starter, then Tebow might actually get another shot at starting in the NFL. Yes, his passes will be ugly and you can time his throwing motion with a sun dial....but remember when he was starting for the Broncos he was a top-10 fantasy QB and an every week starter because of his scrambling ability. Stay tuned.

NO - RBs Spiller/Ingram very close in yards?

    Source: Mike Triplett - ESPN.com

Mike Triplett, from ESPN.com, believes that running backs C.J. Spiller and Mark Ingram could both be close in yards from scrimmage this year. Ingram would pick up his yards mostly as a runner while Spiller would get his yardage as both a runner and receiver out of the backfield.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The more and more we read reports out of New Orleans, the more it becomes clear that Spiller is going to be more than a change-of-pace back for the Saints. If he caught 75 passes this year, we wouldn't be surprised. Spiller's going off the board at RB17 (4.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

WAS- Rookie Jones the third-down RB

    Source: John Keim - ESPN.com

John Keim, from ESPN.com, believes that rookie running back Matt Jones will carve out a role as the team's third-down back. He reports that Alfred Morris could have about the same percentage of the carries (65 percent) as he always has had with Washington. He projects Jones to only get a few carries a game provided that Morris is running well.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Matt Jones hype train was out of control earlier this year. The guy is a poor man's version of BenJarvus Green-Ellis, yet some in the fantasy community felt he could be the next John Riggins. When Jones was selected in the third round of the 2015 NFL draft, some speculated that Morris was on shaky ground. That doesn't seem to be the case now. Jones is the backup, Morris is the starter--and his role could be pretty much what it always has been with Washington.

If Tebow sticks in Philly on 53 man roster they will be the go to team for dumb ESPN segments.

I just can't see Tebow back in the NFL. Then again, I didn't see any of these krazy Kelly moves coming.

Reports are Tebow no longer has that loop in his throwing motion and is much improved after 2 years work with Tom House. We shall see. He also ran similar type offense at Florida as Chip Kelly's. Waiving an All-Pro guard like Eagles did recently won't help an injury prone Bradford. I bet Tebow has thrown the ball more the past 2 years than Bradford. Sanchez starting ever again would be a dumb ESPN segment. Kelly isn't making these moves for Sanchez to be the QB.

I've seen both Barkley and Tebow play at the NFL level. As much I hate to say it, I'd rather go with Tebow.

If C.J. Anderson is indeed the bellcow this year in Denver, and this isn't just some preseason speculative puff piece, his fantasy value skyrockets and he could legitimately contend for the top fantasy running back in 2015.

This isn't really news, I assumed he was the #1 RB at Denver all along. Is there really any doubt?

    Tuesday Update

WAS - Griffin 'excellent every day'

Source: Zac Boyer - Washington Times

Zac Boyer, from the Washington Times, reports that quarterback Robert Griffin III has been impressing his head coach Jay Gruden this offseason. “I think the transition for him into a new system last season was a little bit rocky for all of us,” Gruden said. “But when you have the same system going in for year two, I think he's going to get better. You can see the progress every day that he makes, and it's exciting to watch. It really is, with all three quarterbacks, actually. Robert, especially, is doing an excellent job every day. He's not perfect, nobody is. I'm not perfect. But he's really striving to be perfect, and he's doing a great job of working.”

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The good news keeping coming out about Griffin's progress this offseason. We'll see if he can continue looking good when the pads come on in training camp. Griffin needs to make quicker decisions in the pocket, and he needs to be safer when scrambling so he can stay healthy this season and get his career back on track.

CIN - TE Tyler Eifert impressing

    Source: ESPN.com - Coley Harvey

Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert (elbow, shoulder) was brought along slowly this spring, but he caught virtually everything thrown his way in open practices. Eifert looked sharp running routes.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Great news for the Bengals here. Having an asset like Eifert playing at the top of his game can go a long way to helping this offense. A first-round pick in 2013, Eifert has yet to make much of an impact as a pro. Last year, a dislocated elbow suffered in the first game caused him to miss the season. This year, Eifert is the clear-cut starter at tight end for the Bengals and he has the upside to perform like a low-end TE1. His current ADP is TE18 (14.01) in 12-team PPR leagues.

DAL - RB Ryan Williams on the outside looking in?

    Source: Todd Archer - ESPN.com

Todd Archer, from ESPN.com, believes that Dallas Cowboys running back Ryan Williams won't make the final roster. Williams was limited in the spring because of a swollen knee, and that doesn't help his cause.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams was a fantastic running back in college at Virginia Tech, but that seems like a lifetime ago. We feel his NFL career will read "what might have been" as these injuries have kept him from doing much of anything as a pro.

CIN - WR Marvin Jones happy with progress

    Source: ESPN.com - Coley Harvey

Cincinnati Bengals WR Marvin Lewis (ankle, foot) said he is happy with how he performed during offseason workouts. 'I'm rolling. I don't think that's ever going to change. But it feels good just to track those deep balls and go and just - boom! - go. I'm happy and I'm proud of myself for just pushing through this situation,' Jones said. Jones showed quick feet and steady hands during the workouts.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're hopeful that Jones can get his career back on track after missing the entire 2014 season. Jones was put on Injured Reserve last year with this foot problem, but now he's close to full strength. In 2013, Jones scored 10 touchdowns, snared 51 passes for 712 yards and finished as the 21st-best fantasy receiver that season. If healthy, he could post similar numbers (with fewer touchdowns) in 2015.

NE - RB White a carbon copy of Shane Vereen?

Source: Karen Guregian - Boston Herald

Karen Guregian, from the Boston Herald, reports that second-year running back James White is a "carbon copy" of former Patriots change-of-pace back Shane Vereen. He's been looking great this offseason at OTAs and minicamp, and White could be considered the frontrunner to win the third-down back role for the Patriots in 2015.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners in PPR leagues pay attention to this battle in training camp. White is going to compete with Tarvaris Cadet for the change-of-pace duties behind starter LeGarrette Blount. The winner of the competition has the opportunity to play a larger role than some think. There's a possibility of around 40-50 catches here in the Vereen role. Over the last two seasons, Vereen caught 47 and 53 passes for the Patriots. Now that role could belong to White....stay tuned.

STL - RB Mason has slimmed down

Source: Joe Lyons - St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Joe Lyons, from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports that St. Louis Rams second-year running back Tre Mason has lost weight this offseason. He's down to between 195 and 200 pounds in an effort to help improve his speed. Mason will spend the next month or so working alongside cornerback and teammate Janoris Jenkins with trainer Tony Villiani at XPE Sports in Florida.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Rams selected potential superstar running back Todd Gurley in the first round of the 2015 NFL draft--even after Mason turned in a solid rookie season in 2014. Mason should begin the season as the starter as Gurley has yet to practice this offseason as he continues to rehab the knee injury he suffered last year in college at Georgia. Once Gurley is healthy, expect the Rams to ease himi into the lineup and start chipping away at Mason's touches.

CLE - WR Terrelle Pryor claimed

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com

Cincinnati Bengals WR Terrelle Pryor was claimed off waivers by the Cleveland Browns Monday, June 22, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pryor wasn't going to find a home in the NFL had he stayed at quarterback. Moving to wide receiver might not work out in the long run, but teams are interested in him enough at a new position. The Browns need all the WR talent they can get, so taking a chance on Pryor makes sense. At 6'5" 230 pounds, Pryor is a fine athlete who could create mismatches.

CHI - WR Eddie Royal working with QB

    Source: ESPNChicago.com - Jeff Dickerson

Chicago Bears WR Eddie Royal said he has been working with QB Jay Cutler this offseason in order to build chemistry. Royal said they have been watching extra film and doing extra work on the field.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We've seen this duo before in the NFL, and they were pretty damn productive together. Royal had the best season of his career with 91 catches, 980 yards and five touchdowns when they both played for the Denver Broncos in 2008.

TB - Could add virtual reality system to help Winston

    Source: Pat Yasinskas - ESPN.com

Pat Yasinskas, from ESPN.com, reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are looking into using a virtual reality trainer to help rookie QB Jameis Winston. The Dallas Cowboys have already invested in such a 3-D trainer. "It might be good for Jameis," Bucs OC Dirk Koetter told Fox Sports. "He is a film junkie. We have looked into that."

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ah, technology. Helping Winston visualize and attack is nothing but a good thing. He's already a player that is known to put in the extra work to be great at his craft, and we're sure he'd use this if available. Players wear headgear that allows coaches to see if they're looking at the right reads in practice. They can later simulate the situations with this 3-D trainer.

NO - No major breakthrough for TE Josh Hill?

    Source: Mike Triplett - ESPN.com

Mike Triplett, from ESPN.com, believes there is no "major breakthrough" coming for tight end Josh Hill in 2015. The team traded away Jimmy Graham to the Seattle Seahawks earlier this year, but his role could be split behind Hill and veteran Ben Watson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's a lot of fantasy owners out there who like Hill as a sleeper because of the five touchdowns he snared in a part-time role last year. He led the nation in receptions for tight ends during his final year in college at Idaho State, and Hill is more talented as a receiver than some think. Right now, fantasy owners are expecting him to be a low-end TE1. His current ADP is TE10 (9.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Well you're the one who posted it under the heading "player news" not me.

But seriously, yes there was doubt about C.J.'s status. Many fantasy gurus had reservations about C.J. heading into this year, not because of talent or opportunity, but because of the looming possibility of a quasi-committee at the running back position. It's the primary reason why C.J.'s ADP was somewhere about the mid to late second round, and not the first.

It would be remiss to just assume that C.J. is "the guy" and will automatically soak up bellcow-like volume in Denver's backfield. Those kind of foolhardy projections are the kind that wreck Fantasy seasons if they don't pan out. C.J. is a fairly talented back, but he's not the second coming of Walter Payton. His talent is not so irresistible as to render the thought of a timeshare inconceivable.

Remember, the guy was essentially third on the depth chart to start last season and eventually rose to the top after a slew of injuries. Who's to say that Montee Ball doesn't have a great offseason and throws the whole situation into flux? After all, he was the highly touted pick out of Wisconsin, and management (even given the coaching turnover in Denver) are often reluctant to just give up on a guy in whom they have so much invested.

C.J. is not a guy with a long history to pin your hopes on. What does he really have on his resume, a productive half-season? There is inherent risk involved, as a Fantasy owner, in drafting him in the first or even second round, based on the fact that Montee Ball is still around, with a burning to desire to reclaim his old spot atop the depth chart. And let's not forgot, Ronnie Hillman isn't exactly chopped liver either.

What a beat writer says in June doesn't hold sway with savvy Fantasy owners. It'll be a game of wait and see as to how the Broncos' running back situation shakes out. After training camp and preseason we'll obviously have a better understanding of how the touches might be distributed... hopefully anyways.

You only have to go back to last year to see how jumping to conclusions can backfire in a hurry. Everyone thought Ball was going to the beneficiary of being the starting running back in a Peyton Manning led offense. Well, how'd that turn out? This could be the year that C.J. breaks out and becomes entrenched in the Denver backfield, or it could also be a situation paralleling last year, albeit in a role reversal.

    Wednesday Update

NE - QB Tom Brady's appeal hearing continues

Source: New York Post - Bart Hubbuch

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady is still having the appeal of his four-game suspension heard Tuesday, June 23, and the NFL does not want to continue the hearing Thursday, June 25.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll know more about this hearing in the near future. With NFL commissioner Roger Goodell open to "new evidence" it leaves the door open for the four-game ban to get reduced. We'll see if Brady gets a break, or if he has to miss the first month of the season.

ATL - RB Devonta Freeman enters camp the starter

Source: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - D. Orlando Ledbetter

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman enters training camp ahead of RB Tevin Coleman on the depth chart.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Nobody should be surprised here. Freeman runs with a low center of gravity, and he can change direction without losing much speed. He's not a pile-pusher, but Freeman can break some arm tackles. Coleman is a speed back with the ability to score anytime he touches the ball. The Falcons are likely to use both in a RBBC this season.

DAL - RB Joseph Randle the clear leader

Source: The Dallas Morning News - Jon Machota

Dallas Cowboys RB Joseph Randle appears to be the clear leader at running back, and it's his job to lose in training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

An important note for fantasy owners here. Randle has decent speed and the ability to make defenders miss in space. He should have plenty of space to run with the monstrous Cowboys offensive line in front of him. Randle's current ADP is RB22 (4.10) in 12-team PPR leagues. If he's the featured back for the entire season, Randle could easily outperform that ADP.

TB - WR Mike Evans works out with Randy Moss

    Source: Buccaneers.com - Joe Kania

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Mike Evans said he worked out with former NFL WR Randy Moss for a week this offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners should be excited by Evans this season. He splashed onto the scene last year and finished as the 11th-best fantasy WR in 2014. There's no reason to think his numbers couldn't be as good--or perhaps even better--this season. Yes, he'll be catching passes from a rookie QB and that is scary to some. However, Jameis Winston is not afraid to throw into coverage and Evans is the type of receiver who can regularly win at the point of the catch. We're fine with Evans' current ADP of WR12 (3.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

SEA - QB Russell Wilson ready to move on?

    Source: ESPN.com - Terry Blount

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson, who is believed to be seeking a five-year deal worth more than $110 million, sounded as if he's ready to move on from the Seahawks if his contract situation isn't resolved. He's in the fourth and final year of his rookie contract that will pay him $2.99 million if he doesn't agree to a new deal. Seattle could place the franchise tag on Wilson next year, which would cost them more than $23 million for 2016.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Let's pump the brakes on this "ready to move on" talk. Yes, it's a possibility that Wilson is ready to move on....but it's more likely that he's just going through the negotiation process and things are slow right now. We'd be floored if Wilson was not re-upped by the Seahawks.

DAL - RB Ryan Williams not a fit in Dallas?
    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Dallas Cowboys RB Ryan Williams is unlikely to make the 53-man roster projected by beat writer Todd Archer. The team's running backs would be RBs Joseph Randle, Darren McFadden, Lance Dunbar and FB Tyler Clutts.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's not that Williams isn't a fit--it's that he can't stay healthy. Williams looked like he could be a superstar coming out of Virginia Tech a few years ago, but injuries have derailed his pro career. Williams has been limited by a swollen knee this offseason.

TEN - QB Marcus Mariota ready for camp

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota said he has been working on learning the playbook and is ready for whatever head coach Ken Whisenhunt asks him to do during training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mariota is the only first-round pick who remains unsigned at this time. We expect the two sides to work something out before camp starts, and we're excited to see Mariota slinging the rock for the Titans this season. We'll see how quickly he can translate his skill set to the pro game.

JAX - RB T.J. Yeldon looking to earn spot

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Jacksonville Jaguars RB T.J. Yeldon said he sees himself at the bottom of the running back depth chart and wants to work his up to the starting position. 'I got myself as last, and I'm still trying to work my way up to the top,' Yeldon said. 'I'm just out there to compete and work my way up to the top, see what I can do.' Yeldon said he believes he can be a three-down back for the team but wants to take things one step at a time.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Yeldon could begin the season as the starting running back for the Jaguars with Denard Robinson working as a change-of-pace back behind him. We like Yeldon's ability as he's a big back who is nifty as a runner between the tackles. He's not quite as powerful as some assume he should be, but Yeldon is swift and tough to bring down with a head of steam. He's their best back and most capable of being a lead back. We'll see if he can earn that spot in training camp.

BUF - RB Fred Jackson expects to compete for job

    Source: BuffaloBills.com - Chris Brown

Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson said he expects to compete for a roster spot during training camp. 'We'll see what happens with me getting cut or not,' Jackson said. 'I'll go out and do whatever I can to make sure that doesn't happen. We've got to compete every year. This year is no different than any other year. I've got to go out and compete for my job.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We love Jackson's mindset here. He's taking nothing for granted--just like he has every season as a pro. Jackson will serve as veteran insurance behind McCoy and makes for a nice RB5 to carry for now, but he's got starter's upside if McCoy gets banged up.

IND - WR Phillip Dorsett wants to be a playmaker

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Indianapolis Colts WR Phillip Dorsett said he wants to be a playmaker for the team this season. 'I consider myself a playmaker,' Dorsett said. 'I want to be able to earn their trust and be a guy that they can look to to make a big play and make a play anytime. I just want to earn their trust and that's it right now.' Dorsett said he has learned all of the receiver positions and is ready for the start of training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Dorsett is a playmaker. He can fly down the field and take the top off the defense regularly. Dorsett does a good job of tracking passes over his shoulder, and he does a good job of disguising when deep passes are incoming. We love his upside, but we're curious about his role this year. Dorsett is behind T.Y. Hilton and Andre Johnson on the depth chart. He'll compete with Donte Moncrief to be the team's WR3 in 2015.

CJ Anderson will be a stud this season if he can stay healthy. Speed, elusiveness and the screen game between him and Peyton was real nice last year and will be featured by Gary Kubiak, who fed Arian Foster a ton of screens in Houston during his monster season.

A sleeper I'm keeping my eye on this draft season. Should benefit a lot from defensive focus on Forte and Alshon Jeffery plus the Bears D still looks soft to me so should see a lot of shoot outs.

Russell Wilson ready to move on? Not going to happen for AT LEAST 3 years. He has one year left on rookie contract and Seattle can franchise tag him for 2 years after that if there is no agreement.

    Thursday Update

STL - RB Todd Gurley likely for training camp?

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

St. Louis Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) is eyeing next month's training camp as a return to the field. 'That is definitely a goal that I'm shooting for,' Gurley told NFL Media's Tiffany Blackmon from the NFL Rookie Symposium Wednesday, June 24, 'Just to be able to get out there and do at least some individual stuff. It's looking pretty realistic. This month I'll be in St. Louis rehabbing, so hopefully I can aim for (training camp).'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There aren't many situations we'll be watching more closely than this one. If Gurley is able to meet these goals, things will start to become VERY interesting in St. Louis. Stay tuned.

PIT - PIT has two candidates for No. 2 WR job

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers WRs Markus Wheaton and Martavis Bryant are expected to compete for the No. 2 wide receiver job during training camp. Both players performed well during offseason workouts.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This competition could go either way. Bryant is a big deep target with a large wingspan and leaping ability to win at the point of the catch. Wheaton is a fantastic route-runner who can get open on underneath routes. No matter who wins, we expect Bryant to be the more fantasy relevant player.

PIT - WR Martavis Bryant may be red zone target

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant could be targeted in the red zone more often this season since he is 6-foot-4. Bryant had four receptions in the red zone last season and all of the catches were for touchdowns.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bryant "may be red-zone target" this year? Ha! He's CERTAINLY going to be targeted in the red zone as much as possible. His yards per catch (21.1) ranked 1st in the NFL along with his longest catch (94 yards) also ranking at the top in the league. Bryant's 18.04 air yards per target ranked 1st in the NFL. He's a deep target with the ability to play above the rim near pay dirt. Fantasy owners are taking him off the board at WR25 (5.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

TEN - QB Marcus Mariota may not run as often

Source: The Tennessean - John Glennon

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota will be allowed to run at times this season in order to keep opponents on their heels, but head coach Ken Whisenhunt may want to limit Mariota's runs so he can avoid injury. 'The league does a good job trying to protect quarterbacks, but any time a quarterback takes off with the ball there's a risk,' Whisenhunt said. 'Then again, anytime anyone has the ball there's a risk, so I don't think you can get too caught up in it. You just have to be smart. Obviously you don't want him having 30 carries a game because then you really increase that risk.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Quarterbacks who run a lot get hit often and have more chances to get banged up. It's wise for the Titans to cut back on his rushing attempts. He's athletic, and that needs to be accounted for in the play-calling. The Titans don't want him to get hurt and stunt his development as a passer. If Mariota is going to make it in the NFL as a top-tier quarterback, then he'll need to show well as a passer from within the pocket.

DET - QB Matthew Stafford showing better accuracy

    Source: Mlive.com - Kyle Meinke

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford has shown improved accuracy during offseason workouts, according to head coach Jim Caldwell. 'He's improved,' Caldwell said. 'He has a better feel for the system. You can see our timing's better, receivers have a better sense of the routes that they're running. All around I think we've made some improvement.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A healthy Calvin Johnson and Eric Ebron will help Stafford put up better numbers this year. The team also needs to do a better job of protecting him. The Lions OL gave up 45 sacks in 2014. We'll see if that improved accuracy shows through this season.

NYG - RB Shane Vereen sees time in red zone

    Source: NJ.com - Jordan Raanan

New York Giants RB Shane Vereen received snaps in the red zone during offseason workouts and was used all over the field as a receiver out of the backfield.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Vereen is going to be a playmaker for the Giants offense. He'll work as a change-of-pace back behind starter Rashad Jennings, but he could do more if called upon. His current ADP is RB31 (6.09) in 12-team PPR leagues, and Vereen could outperform that spot--even in a limited role.

CLE - Cleveland in contact with WR Josh Gordon

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon has been in contact with an official from the team this offseason, according to a source. Gordon is serving a one-year suspension for multiple violations of the NFL's drug and alcohol policy but is allowed to be in contact with a front office member.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gordon has wasted his talent--and he's wasting time that he could be starring in the NFL. When he's not suspended, Gordon is one of the best receivers in the game. He served a 10-game suspension last year, came back and looked great for the first couple of games, then he was suspended by the team again for the season finale in Week 17. His contract with Cleveland is up after the 2015 season, and he's set to be a restricted free agent. Who knows if Cleveland will be interested in bringing him back after all they've endured with Gordon.

BAL - WR Kamar Aiken has chemistry with QB

    Source: WNST.net - Luke Jones

Baltimore Ravens WR Kamar Aiken showed a very good chemistry with QB Joe Flacco during offseason workouts and will be a candidate for one of the starting wide receiver jobs during training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Steve Smith is still starting, but the other starter is up in the air after Torrey Smith bolted to the 49ers in free agency. Aiken could be that guy, but he'll have to prove himself in training camp. He'll have to beat out his old college teammate at UCF, Ravens 2015 first-round pick Breshad Perriman. We like Aiken, but we're putting our chips on Perriman to win the job.

NYG - WR Rueben Randle draws praise
Source: The Star-Ledger - Jordan Raanan
New York Giants WR Rueben Randle was the best receiver on the field by a wide margin during spring practices, in the opinion of beat writer Jordan Ranaan. Randle consistently made catches downfield and in traffic.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Please note that Odell Beckham Jr. missed plenty of practice time nursing a minor hamstring injury. Also note that Victor Cruz isn't back from his serious knee injury yet. It's good that Randle is making the most of his opportunity, but he's WR3 for the Giants when those other two are healthy.

NYJ - RB Chris Ivory leads backfield
    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets RB Chris Ivory is listed as the starting running back entering training camp, according to beat writer Rich Cimini's unofficial depth chart. RB Bilal Powell is the primary backup, and RB Zac Stacy is listed as the third running back. RB Stevan Ridley (knee) could figure in eventually, but he's expected to be limited at the start of camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We were all expecting Ivory to be the top guy...especially with Ridley banged up. What's interesting to note is that Stacy is third on the depth chart. We'll see if he can climb ahead of Powell when training camp starts.

    Friday Update

NE - QB Tom Brady's ruling not expected for weeks

    Source: FOXSports.com

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady isn't expected to hear the decision from his suspension hearing Tuesday, June 23, until mid-to-late July.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Leave it to our beloved NFL to keep us hanging. Most fantasy drafts don't get fired up until August, so most owners will know whether or not Brady is suspended--and how long he's out for.

CAR - WR Kelvin Benjamin's weight gain overblown

Source: Charlotte Observer - Joseph Person

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin's reported weight gain this offseason is being overblown, according to general manager Dave Gettleman. Gettleman expects Benjamin to be ready to go for training camp next month. A team source said Benjamin, who played at 245 pounds as a rookie last year, showed up to workouts in April nine pounds overweight. 'It really is much ado about nothing. Right now he's only five pounds off his playing weight. That's it,' Gettleman said after the team wrapped up their three-day minicamp. Benjamin has had weight problems before, as he took a redshirt year in college after being 20 pounds overweight. He had 73 catches for 1,008 yards and nine touchdowns in 2014, but he missed 10 of 14 practices during organized team activities and minicamp with injuries to both his hamstrings.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is the fishbowl that players live in now. Guys show up with a little bit of bad weight after the offseason and it makes news. Benjamin is set to be Cam Newton's favorite target again this season, and he'll build off the experience he gained last year as a rookie. We like Benjamin's current ADP of WR16 (3.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

ATL - TE Tony Moeaki the answer at TE?

Source: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - D. Orlando Ledbetter

Atlanta Falcons TE Tony Moeaki will compete with TE Jacob Tamme for the Falcons' starting tight end job during training camp. QB Matt Ryan praised both tight ends for their work in the past, 'They (both) have these unique qualities down in the red zone, and can be featured on third down,' Ryan said. 'I think (they) have a little uniqueness . . .I would say Jacob and Tony more, in the third down and the route-running and finding ways to match them on a linebacker to see if they can run the options and do the stuff on third downs required to get open,' said Ryan. Moeaki has overcome injury troubles and hopes to reestablish himself as the once promising tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Nah, we're not buying this. Moeaki has a ton of talent, but he also has an injury history that goes back to his days in college. Tamme has more left in the tank than some think, and he should lead the way for the Falcons at tight end. For fantasy purposes, Tamme is more of a TE2/backup.

SF - RB Carlos Hyde sheds weight

Source: Sacramento Bee - Matt Barrows

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde has shed about 10 pounds from last year's playing weight, which should add to his deceptively light feet and cutting ability. The team is installing zone-blocking concepts, which worked well for Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris when offensive line coach Chris Foerster was in Washington.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Getting rid of bad weight is good for Hyde. He's a powerful runner who can be tough to bring down with a head of steam. We'll see if he works well in the zone-blocking scheme which requires RBs to be decisive with the rock. He's got a current ADP of RB22 (4.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

BUF - TE Charles Clay staying on the field

Source: WGR Sports Radio 550 - Sal Capaccio

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay will play on all three downs.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

So he'll be blocking for three downs? While Clay has had moments, he's not on an offense which looks like a passing behemoth. Assuming Matt Cassel/EJ Manuel/Tyrod Taylor/Matt Simms/Hot Dog Vendor throw the ball effectively, there are two things which will still stand in Clay's way. First, he's behind Sammy Watkins, Percy Harvins and Robert Woods in the pecking order of targets. And second this is still likely to be a run-heavy attack and will feature LeSean McCoy an awful lot (and Clay is a very good blocker). So if the ball is heading Clay's direction, it's likely being carried by McCoy while Clay is blocking. Clay is being drafted as a TE2 and a lower-end one at that, which is right about where he should be.

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant was present for a Sunday Night Football photo shoot for Week 1 Tuesday, June 23.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

While Bryant may not get the long-term contract he wants, we could see him playing this season on his one-year $12.8 million franchise tender. If he does end up holding out, it may not go past a week or two of training camp.

STL - RB Todd Gurley to meet with doctor

    Source: FOXSports.com - Alex Marvez

St. Louis Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) said he is scheduled to meet with Dr. James Andrews in a few weeks to have his surgically repaired knee examined.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There are some who believe Gurley could be ready for the start of training camp....or at least ready to do some light work at that time. Some feel Gurley may not be ready at the start of the regular season. Either way, we know the Rams are going to be cautious with Gurley. He's got superstar potential and should be an impact player when healthy.

SEA - QB Russell Wilson looking for big deal

    Source: BleacherReport.com - Jason Cole

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson is looking to become the highest-paid player in the league with his next contract, according to sources. Wilson's agent understands that any contract extension Wilson receives will be surpassed by another player in the future.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This contract situation seems dire at this time, and there's even some out there who think Wilson might move on in 2016. We're not going with that "bold" prediction as we have confidence that the two sides will be able to work something out. Finding a franchise quarterback is difficult, and teams will pay a premium price to keep a guy like Wilson on the roster. Seattle's been able to keep Wilson around on an inexpensive third-rounder's contract. Now, it's time to pay an appropriate price.

DET - RB Ameer Abdullah ready for big role

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Detroit Lions RB Ameer Abdullah said he could be a three-down back if needed. 'That's what I've done my whole life,' Abdullah said. 'I haven't done anything else, so I don't see why I wouldn't be confident in my game. I know my teammates trust me in such a short time to do so. I trust myself.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Abdullah has the ability to be an impact player--at least as a part-time back at the pro level. He's not a pile-pusher, but Abdullah can make defenders miss in open space and he has the speed to eat up chunks of yards in a hurry. There is a debate about whether or not he can be more than a change-of-pace back in the NFL. The Lions may give him a shot to prove that he can be more of a full-time player than some think. Right now, Abdullah as an ADP of RB31 (6.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

DEN - WR Cody Latimer likes the offense

    Source: ESPN.com - Joe Kaiser

Denver Broncos WR Cody Latimer said he has made an effort to develop more chemistry with QB Peyton Manning and has dedicated himself to learning head coach Gary Kubiak's playbook. 'It's much easier to catch on. It gives you time to play fast; you don't have to think so much,' Latimer said. 'Not as many adjustments in this offense. Once you know what you're doing out of the huddle, you stick with that. No changing on the run.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners should appreciate the high dynasty value of Latimer. He's got the natural talent to be a top-25 receiver in the NFL, but this offense is going to limit his production as the Broncos WR3. Latimer is going to play a larger role than he did last year as a rookie, but he's still behind Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders. Re-draft owners should have Latimer on the waiver wire speed dial, or they can take him as a late-round flier.

NYG - WR Victor Cruz continues to make progress
Source: USA TODAY Sports - Lorenzo Reyes

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (knee) will have to participate in a mandatory conditioning drill at the start of training camp and believes he could pass it now. Cruz still has not worked with QB Eli Manning on route running or timing drills.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We've heard nothing but great things about Cruz this offseason. His recovery seems to be on track, and the team is hopeful he can be ready for the start of the regular season. Expect Cruz to be limited in training camp as they ease him back into action.

BUF - WR Percy Harvin looking to improve

    Source: BuffaloBills.com - Chris Brown

Buffalo Bills WR Percy Harvin said he has been working with wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal this offseason in hopes of becoming a more complete wide receiver. 'I feel that it's time for me to put it all together,' Harvin said. 'I feel like I have the coaching staff and support here in Buffalo to get that done. The owners here are unbelievable. Everything here spells success for me. The world has yet to see me explode like I'm about to.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Harvin has always had talent, but his production hasn't really matched his potential. We're not expecting him to breakout this season on a run-heavy Bills team. The quarterback situation in Buffalo also doesn't give us much confidence. His current ADP is WR38 (10.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

IND - TE Coby Fleener wants to improve play

    Source: IndySportsCentral.com - Mike Chappell
Indianapolis Colts TE Coby Fleener said he wants to be a more consistent player and is looking to limit his mistakes on the field. 'Your flubs are aired in front of the whole world. Whether you're sitting at a desk all day or whether you're playing football, nobody wants to make the 'Not Top 10.' Unfortunately I've been there and I'm trying to limit that as much as possible.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Colts have one of the most exciting passing games in the league. Fleener has been a favorite target of QB Andrew Luck from their days together in college at Stanford. He'll split time and targets once again with Dwayne Allen in 2015. Fantasy owners should consider Fleener a low-end TE2 who could put up TE1 numbers in certain matchups.

TB - QB Jameis Winston looking to drop weight

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston said he wants to lose some weight before the start of training camp. Winston said he currently weighs 238 pounds and would like to drop to around 230 pounds.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Winston is a bigger quarterback, so he's going to carry a bit of bad weight. Losing about 10 pounds is nothing but a good thing, and it should help his stamina as games (and the season) wear on.

PHI - WR Nelson Agholor learning offense

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Philadelphia Eagles WR Nelson Agholor said he worked as an outside receiver during offseason workouts but is learning the other receiver spots as well since the team uses different formations. 'I play right side outside, right now, but I'm continuing to learn conceptually the whole deal, because that is how we work here. It's by formation and different people will be in different formations. And that's how we sugar coat what we do...That's just the game of football nowadays. It's about window dressing some of your staple concepts and that's what we'll do,' Agholor said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Agholor has the ability and opportunity to be an impact player in 2015. The rookie from USC is dangerous when running routes over the middle. He can gain separation before his break, and Agholor can pull away from defenders after the catch. Fantasy owners should consider him a WR3 with WR1 upside this season. His current ADP is WR32 (7.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

SEA - WR Jermaine Kearse likely for every down

Source: The Seattle Times - Bob Condotta
Seattle Seahawks WR Jermaine Kearse is likely to be an every-down receiver for the team in 2015. He is a versatile receiver that excels at blocking.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Kearse may be an every-down player for the Seahawks, but he's not much of a fantasy factor. The Seahawks have added plenty of talent to the weapons in the passing game. Doug Baldwin will start on the outside opposite Kearse, and the team will also feature tight end Jimmy Graham. We also want to see how rookie Tyler Lockett is used in this offense.

Could be interesting with him and Jordan Matthews in a Chip Kelly offense. I'm sure he'll get plenty of chances.

    Sunday Update

OAK - RB Latavius Murray expects big season

    Source: Raiders.com - Rebecca Corman

Oakland Raiders RB Latavius Murray has the opportunity to be the team's No. 1 running back in 2015, and it's one he embraces. 'It's a great feeling, but every day I have to go in there knowing I need to get better every day,' Murray explained. 'I need to play like it's a new year. Last season is just last season and the year before that it was the year before that. Every season is a new year for me and it's a year I have to go out and prove something.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Murray is a swift runner who is difficult to bring down when he builds a head of steam. He should be looked at as a RB2 (top-25) running back for fantasy owners, but Murray has the upside to be more.

SD - Rookie RB Gordon as good as advertised
    Source: Eric D. Williams - ESPN.com
Eric D. Williams, from ESPN.com, writes that Chargers rookie RB Melvin Gordon has been as good as advertised at minicamp and OTAs. He's expecting Gordon to start as the lead back for the Chargers in 2015.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ryan Mathews moved on in free agency, so the Chargers drafted Gordon in the first round of the 2015 NFL draft with the idea that he could be the lead back this season. Gordon reminds us of former Vikings RB Robert Smith because of his speed and ability to eat up chunks of yards in a hurry. Gordon is not a pile-pusher, but he can bounce runs outside to move the chains. We'll likely see Danny Woodhead as the change-of-pace back behind Gordon when the rookie needs a breather.

DAL - WR Dez Bryant's agent meets with Cowboys

    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

The agent for Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant met face-to-face with the team for the first time in nearly four months, per sources. Bryant hasn't yet signed his $12.823 million franchise tender, and he has a deadline of July 15 to agree to a long-term deal. After that date Bryant will need to play out the season under the tender and the two sides could discuss an extension after the season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Deals get done at deadlines in the NFL. We're about a couple of weeks away from the mid-July deadline for franchise-tagged players to agree to new long-term deals. We'll have a better feeling about Bryant (and Demaryius Thomas) when the deadline is a few days away.

TB - QB Jameis Winston staying focused

Source: The Associated Press - Tom Withers

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston is maintaining his focus while eyes stay peeled on him in his rookie offseason. Winston said he's focused on being a quarterback on and off the field. He added that he's also focused on bouncing back from the mistakes he's made, saying he has nothing to prove.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Winston has an incredible work ethic, and he's going to try to make his mark this season--even through the ups and downs of his rookie year. He's not afraid to throw into coverage, and Winston has incredible weapons around him in Tampa. Fantasy owners won't be drafting Winston in most leagues (low-end QB2 or QB3), but we're excited about watching his development as the season rolls on.

SF - Offense going to be faster

    Source: Joe Fann - 49ers.com

Joe Fann, from 49ers.com, notes the 49ers offense is going to use a faster tempo in 2015. “It’s definitely a fast tempo. We’re trying to get a lot faster than last year as far as getting to the line. … As far as the system, it’s very similar to what we’ve run in past years. Some of the terminology is a bit different but there’s still familiarity with past years.” - wide receiver Anquan Boldin on the 49ers new-look, uptempo offense.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The 49ers played 1009 snaps last year, a mark that ranked 20th in the NFL in 2014. The league average last year was 1,024, and the league high was 1,127 snaps by (not surprisingly) the Philadelphia Eagles. We have serious questions about the 49ers this year...on both sides of the ball. We'll see if QB Colin Kaepernick can perform better as a passer in 2015. His play will feed the energy for the rest of the offense.

MIN - WR Charles Johnson ready to improve

Source: Master Tesfatsion - Minneapolis Star-Tribune
Master Tesfatsion, from the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, reports that Vikings WR Charles X. Johnson is not satisfied with his newly gained stability. Vikings offensive coordinator Norv Turner is pleased with Johnson's work this offseason. “CJ has picked up where he left off in December and he’s having a good spring,” Turner said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We love Johnson's mindset here. He's not resting on his laurels, and he's working as if his roster spot is on the line. The Vikings added Mike Wallace via trade this offseason, but Johnson should be the lead receiver because of the chemistry he established with QB Teddy Bridgewater in 2014. Fantasy owners should consider Johnson a WR4 with upside.

    TB - Seferian-Jenkins a sleeper?

    Source: Scott Smith - Buccaneers.com

Scott Smith, from Buccaneers.com, speculates that Buccaneers second-year tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins could be a fantasy sleeper this season. Seferian-Jenkins is completely healthy now and possibly primed for the type of big season the Bucs envisioned when they drafted him high in the second round in 2014.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Seferian-Jenkins is a huge target who knows how to use his body to box out defenders. This skill set helps him excel as a red-zone threat. Yes, Jameis Winston is a rookie quarterback, but he could lean on his tight end early and often. Fantasy owners need to consider Seferian-Jenkins as a low-end TE2 with TE1 potential.

BAL - WR2 job wide open

    Source: Garrett Downing - BaltimoreRavens.com

Garrett Downing, from BaltimoreRavens.com, reports the second wide receiver job for the Ravens is up for grabs in training camp. Marlon Brown, Kamar Aiken and rookie Breshad Perriman have all received first-team reps in minicamp opposite Steve Smith.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brown seems to be the frontrunner here, but he'll have to beat out the rest of the group to earn that job. Perriman is an interesting rookie to watch, and he's got better upside than Brown. We think Brown is better suited as a slot receiver.
