in today's era, ray lewis is at or near the top. but that tells you all you need to know, he routinely shakes hands and chats with guys on the other team before and after games.

the guys i mentioned would probably try to stab you after the game if you were on the other team

Jack Youngblood comes to mind, not only did he play the Superbowl with a broken leg, he played in the ProBowl the following week with that broken leg. That's passion for the game!

I dont have a problem with guys that talk before or after the game. I know Ray talks plenty during the game when he smacks his opponent in the mouth. In the 60 minutes that count, Ray isnt chatting it up with anyone.

Rocky Bleier- if you read all what he endured just to stick around on the Steelers practice squad for years before actually playing in the NFL again.

Hines Ward- loved/loves the game with big hits and smiles

    true

but doesn't it seem like football players are all one big fraternity, vs when i was a kid and they really did want to kill each other. part of that comes with free agency/trades/etc, hard to be truly loyal

You're all to young. Start here fine, but if the name Butkus/Nitschke isn't in the conversation then it's mute. Check out some 60's. 70's FB these current guys are a bunch of wimps. I'll give you R Lewis though.

Well, I think a lot of these guys are "buds" off the field. Perhaps we have left out the most passionate of all.......Charles Martin.

not anywhere near the best player but as far as passion I'm gunna mention

    Pat Tillman

even though it was friendly fire, he gave his life for all of us, like anyone who serves

except he didn't need to, he wasn't hurting for money, he died because he was passionate to be an American

props Pat, may you never be forgotten.

    Ronnie Lott for sure

At the end of the 1985 season in a game against the Cowboys, Ronnie Lott, then in his glory days with the 49ers, mangled his left pinky in a brutal collision with running back Timmy Newsome. Bone fragments and parts of Lott's finger lay somewhere in the turf. Lott came out of the game briefly -- a game his team won to gain a wild-card berth in the NFC playoffs. He bore the agony of his dismembered member in the manner of all Top Guns and Terminators of sports. Enduring the pain was a religion -- or at least a line-item entry in the game's Iliad of make-believe war.
Singletary would probably make the top 10 list as well.
