    Why would he need to maintain possession of the ball while going to the ground if he already stepped out of bounds after scoring the touchdown?

    Because by rule a pass reception requires that you maintain possession all the way down. It wouldn't be the case if he was running the ball in. I think it's a bad rule that needs to be adjusted, but it is what it is for the moment...

    I could see if he was still in bounds, but he had stepped out of bounds - in which case, the clock should stop, and the play ruled dead.
