My "Just For the Heck Of It" Draft Grades

Everyone knows that the draft is basically a crap shoot, and who knows when, or even if the season will start, but here is my off the wall draft grades.

    AFC East:

Buffalo. C. They helped their D, but did nothing for their anemic offense.
Miami. C. A decent draft, but still no QB.
New England. C+. The reverse of Buffalo. Offensive help, but nothing for their aging defense.
N.Y. Jets. C. They helped their lines, but still no LB help.

    AFC North:

Baltimore. B. They addressed some needs, but Smith is a gamble.
Cincinnati. B+. Solid WR draft, and insurance at QB by taking Dalton.
Cleveland. B+. Nothing spectacular, but quantity for a team that needs a lot of help.
Pitt. B. Typical Steeler draft, getting line help on both sides of the ball.

    AFC South:

Houston. B-. Much needed defensive help.
Indianapolis. A-. They got help for Manning, and the defense.
Jacksonville. C. Gabbert was a steal, but they got little else.
Tennessee. A-. Locker is a bit of a stretch in an otherwise very solid draft.

    AFC West:

Denver. C+. They got some much needed defensive help, but not much else.
Kansas City. D. They rolled the dice way too many times in this draft.
Oakland. C. Not too bad for no 1st round pick.
San Diego. C-. A good late round draft saved this grade from going even lower.

    NFC East:

Dallas. C. Solid 1st round, but the rest was rather weak.
N.Y. Giants. B+. A very solid defensive draft.
Philadelphia. C-. Another team that rolled the dice too many times.
Washington. B+. A suprisingly solid draft on defense and at WR.

    NFC North:

Chicago. B-. They got Line help, but still no help for Cutler.
Detroit. A. Farley and Suh will be the two best DT's in the NFL. An overall solid draft.
Green Bay. A-. Lots of help and protection for Rodgers.
Minnesota. C+. Ponder is the big gamble here.

    NFC South:

Atlanta. B. Did they give up too much for Jones?
Carolina. D. They rolled the dice on Newton and got little more.
New Orleans. B+. Ingrams health is the only question mark for an otherwise solid draft.
Tampa Bay. B. Not much on offense, but a solid defensive draft.

    NFC West:

Arizona. B+. They will have the best corners in the NFL. Overall solid draft.
St. Louis. B+. They got defensive line help and help for QB Bradford.
San Francisco. D. They reached almost every round, and still no not have a QB.
Seattle. C+. Offensive line help for a running game, but what about the QB situation?

New England. C+. The reverse of Buffalo. Offensive help, but nothing for their aging defense.
Not a fan of CB Ras Dowling at pick #33? They also got a LB and CB in the later rounds. Hardly nothing.

They got RBs in the 2nd and 3rd round, which they really needed last year, plus a couple offensive linemen, one of which is Nate Solder who should prove to be an elite player. Talk about aging, the Pats offensive line was getting old and they addressed that.

Overall 9 picks with 5 of them being in the top 74 was a very good draft, especially considering the Pats track record for drafting well. Toss in a wildcard like Ryan Mallet at pick #74 and this draft could end up being something to look back on years from now and say, "Wow".

Needless to say, only giving the Pats a C+ is a mistake. Pats had the best draft last year, I have to give them another A here.

Indy only managed 5 picks, none of which were super spectacular. I'd maybe give them a "C".

True, they got a couple offensive linemen which were desperately needed, one of which is Castanzo who should be a solid guy. Otherwise they only a DT @ #87 & CB @ #188 for the defense and a mid round RB.

As a Skins fan, I really like what they did. As many needs as they have, it should be good to get some more competition at most positions. Looking forward to see what they do for QB. Shanahan loves John Beck, but he's not someone that excites me.

Texans fill all D needs and build depth for rotation and again they are ranked under the colts

Texans gotta be a solid pick to make the playoffs this year. They've got too many good pieces to the puzzle.

Agree with your take on Carolina. Wonder what they'll do with the first pick next year?

The Viqueens look poised to lose a DICKLOAD of players to free agency and start Christian Ponder. I'd say the Queens will be in spitting distance of the #1 overall pick right now haha. Actually, that'd be a good o/u bet - Minne vs Carolina.

I don't think Minny is that bad, they've still got the solid core that was in the NFC Championship game little over a year ago. Last year the injuries at WR and QB ruined them. Still, I wouldn't expect much if they start the rookie. They really need to go after a vet and let Ponder sit for a while, especially if the lockout goes very long, there's no way they can send a rookie QB out there without any mini camps.

Carolina is a cinch to be picking at or near the top of the draft again next year. The ownership refuses to stick any money into the franchise for some reason. This last year was pathetic, letting Peppers go and just starting scrubs at QB and letting Fox languish as a lame duck coach. The writing is on the wall that the ownership is tightening the purse strings.

Instead of nitpicking Ill congratulate you for the effort. Maybe you should do one of these for the draft 3 years ago.

Detroit and New Orleans did a good job on their drafts.

Grading drafts is virtually impossible for the first five years unless you are talking about major busts/blunders.

Philly and New England both had awesome drafts. Two smartest teams in the NFL.
