Kent State, Wow! Scored five off one of the best pitchers in the country - up 5-2 in the 6th.

Lots of very competitive games right now.

    CHARLOTTE +3.5 [-120]
Two similar teams in Charlotte & the hosts, Arizona State. Pitching and then working the base paths for runs offensively. ASU needed a miracle finish in the 9th last night to avoid being upset by New Mexico. Charlotte shut down Arkansas 3-2. The 49ers can put out their Ace 1B option tonight in Tyler Barnette. He was 9-1 with a 1.96 ERA. ASU will counter with their ace, DJ Baxendale who sported a neat 1.85 ERA. This Charlotte pitching staff is tough as they were 5th in D1 in opponent's batting average at .221. They are adept at keeping games close and giving their offense a chance to piece something together. I think their formula needs to be close to last night, strike first and then let your pitching do its job. Charlotte won't be caught in the headlights here as they have played UNC, another national seed, twice this year - going 1-1. The Sun Devils are a tough squad to beat at home and seem to have that late inning touch when needed. That being said, if Barnette can keep ASU in check - the 49ers should be able to keep pace in what looks like it should be a close game.

Nothing there. Fullerton has better pitching, but their offense isn't always reliable. I got killed today after a good day yesterday. I think it hurt me that the books didn't get up these lines early enough to study. Left me scrambling some too although I thought I'd at least hit half. Creighton just missed a golden opportunity to score some runs. Left the bases loaded. ASU showing its stuff early, routing Charlotte 7-0. Eesh. Will try to bounce back tomorrow and lessen the amount of plays.

    REGIONALS: DAY 2 WRAP-UP

    Atlanta Regional
Hosts Georgia Tech staved off elimination on Saturday behind solid pitching from Jeb Bradley who silenced the Souther Miss' bats until the 8th inning as Tech won 6-2. The Jackets got home runs from DH Daniel Palka and RF Brandon Thomas. Tech now gets a shot to exact revenge on Austin Peay for their shock loss on Friday. Surprising Mississippi State sits in control of this region on the strength of their pitching which has limited foes to three runs in two games, a 2-0 win over Southern Miss and an 8-3 win over Austin Peay on Saturday. It would be the surprise of the tournament so far if Georgia Tech lost twice to the same team in three games here in Atlanta. All the motivation they should need to beat Peay should have come on Friday. Their pitching should carry them, but there might be an anxious moment or two if their offense staggers.

    Austin Regional
Two of the most shocking developments of any Regional came on Austin on Saturday. Number one, Horns pitcher Taylor Jungmann who had a 0.95 ERA was touched up for seven earned runs by Kent State. Here is how phenomenal this is for the Golden Flashes. Jungmann had given up just 13 earned runs all year! He had not been beaten either, something Kent State changed in a signature win for their program, 7-5 over the Longhorns. That puts Kent State at 2-0 and they'll await the elimination winner between Texas and Texas State. Texas State staved off elimination Saturday with a 4-2 win over Princeton. Texas beat Texas State 3-1 in the regular season behind the effort of five different pitchers. That could help them be prepared for Sunday's elimination special. However, UT has the luxury of throwing Cole Green on Sunday. He's experienced and has been a dominant pitcher in his four years in Austin. Texas expects to win Sunday, but Texas State on the spread if they'll give us three runs or better is my choice because the Horns are going to be tight.

    Chapel Hill Regional
The Tar Heels took awhile to break out against James Madison, but UNC crushed the Dukes late with ten runs in the final three innings to blank JMU 14-0. The Dukes were completely baffled by Patrick Johnson who struck out eleven in eight innings. The highest scoring team in Division One will have to find its stroke in an elimination game on Sunday against the #4 seed Maine. Maine got an absolutely lights out pitching performance from Jeffrey Gibbs who shut down Florida International as the Black Bears prevailed, 4-1. Gibbs went eight innings and allowed a high octane offense just two hits. Maine has been able to shut down two pretty good offenses, allowing just five runs to North Carolina and FIU combined. Although James Madison is daunting, Saturday's showing by Johnson shows that they can be kept in check. Maine could turn to Stephen Perakslis who had a solid start in Maine's second conference tournament start. Perakslis
has pitched an inning in each of the first two games here in Chapel Hill, but likely will be called on at some point. They could start A.J. Bazdanes and see how far he can go and then turn to Perakslis if needed. Either way, Maine cannot be discounted on Sunday. They will offer a nice price and with James Madison searching for their offense as well as a pitcher on Sunday, don't be surprised if Maine continues its Cinderella run another game.

    Charlottesville Regional
The top seed, Virginia, has itself in great shape to advance to the Super Regionals. UVA used another dominant pitching performance to propel itself to a 10-2 win. Danny Hultzen went seven and gave up just one run. David Coleman and Steven Proscia accounted for seven RBI. As expected, East Carolina bounced back and eliminated Navy 6-1. ECU got four RBI from DH Chase McDonald. The Pirates now face St.John's in an elimination game on Sunday. The Red Storm beat ECU 2-0. UVA sits back and waits for the winner tomorrow night and remain the favorite to advance here.

    Clemson Regional
An offensive slugest ended on Saturday with top seeded Clemson putting down Coastal Carolina 12-7. Clemson struck for two runs in each of the first three innings and then broke the game open with four in the 8th inning. Clemson clubbed three dingers and have now scored 23 runs in the two games here in this regional. Coastal will go up against Connecticut again on Sunday after the Huskies demolished Sacred Heart to survive an elimination game. UConn got hits from every starter in a 13-3 win. They'll try to solve Coastal's offense that whipped one of the best pitchers in the country on Friday in UConn's Matt Barnes. With the aces not likely to see action again herem runs could be the order of the day. Lean to the over with Coastal and UConn.

    College Station Regional
Texas A&M stayed on track to advance to the Super Regionals as they worked a 6-3 win over Seton Hall. The Aggies broke open a 3-3 tie in the with a two run bomb from Adam Smith in the 6th. Ross Stripling led another strong pitching performance, going all the way with five strikeouts and just one earned run allowed. Seton Hall will face Arizona in the first elimination game on Sunday. The Wildcats bounced back in a big way on Saturday after being shut out by Seton Hall on Friday. Arizona busted out with 13 runs as all but one starter drove in a run in a 13-0 thumping over Wright State. Arizona is too good to be expected to be held down again as they ranked third in hitting in Division One. Seton Hall likely will rely on a steady parade of pitchers on Sunday to try and shut down Arizona. I'd bet against that. A&M awaits the winner of that game.

    Columbia Regional
The defending National Champs decided that they wouldn't make things interesting again on Saturday after narrowly winning on Friday. South Carolina spotted Stetson a run and then put up ten in two innings in the 3rd & 4th to break things open in route to an 11-5 win. Catcher Robert Beary paced the offense with a home run and four RBI. Stetson gets the rematch with N.C. State after the Wolfpack survived a gritty Georgia Southern club on Saturday, 5-2. It was a one run game until the Pack scored twice in the 9th to give them some breathing room. Ace Corey Mazzoni struck out 12 in eight solid innings of work. This looks to be an even game as both offenses produce runs by hitting the gaps. Stetson gets the speed edge. Whichever team gets the most out of its starter on Sunday will likely be the one that survives.

    Corvallis Regional
Oregon State used a superior pitching effort from Sam Gaviglo as he struck out eleven and limited Creighton to a single run in the Beavers 5-1 win on Saturday. That sets the Beavers up to pounce on whomever survives Sunday's first elimination game. That will come between Creighton and Georgia. The Diamond Dogs found their offensive mojo as they beat out Arkansas-Little Rock, 7-3. The Dogs probably turn to Blake Dieterich on Sunday. Dieterich helped stop the bleeding for Georgia as far as a third starter late in the season. Creighton turns to its #3 in Greg Hellhake. He was decent with a 4.02 ERA in 15 starts. Creighton's versatile bullpen could provide the difference on Sunday if their starter can give them five solid innings. If Georgia strikes early though and shows confidence from their breakout on Saturday, expect Georgia to prevail and set up an elimination game Sunday night with the hosts.

    Fort Worth Regional
Dallas Baptist continued to knock off the big names as they nipped top seeded TCU 3-2 to put themselves in the driver's seat in Ft.Worth. DBU pitching limited the Horned Frogs to just three hits and used a Landon Anderson RBI single in the 6th to go ahead for good. It was the third time this season that Dallas Baptist has beaten TCU. The other game saw Oral Roberts eliminated an uninspired Oklahoma squad 7-0. The Sooners shot themselves in the foot with six errors that led to three unearned runs. That held up for Oral Roberts who got a gem from pitcher Drew Bowen. Bowen shut OU down for eight innings, allowing just three hits. Oral Roberts meets TCU in an elimination game on Sunday. TCU hammered Oral Roberts in the opener on Friday and will have the homefield edge that should be enough to get them through to a rematch with Dallas Baptist. Expect Dallas Baptist to again offer a superb underdog price with a legit shot to cash again.

    Fullerton Regional
Stanford got a stellar pitching performance from Jordan Pries who limited Fullerton to a pair of hits in 7.2 IP as the Cardinal nicked the top seed, 1-0. Fullerton now works into an elimination game against Illinois. The Illini used a pair of multiple run scoring innings early to push out to a 5-1 lead on Kansas State and then held off the Wildcats to advance to Sunday's elimination game. John Anderson gave the bullpen a good break with eight innings of three hit ball. Illinois will need another gem like that on Sunday, which could be a stretch. The Illini likely call on Corey Kimes on Sunday. He had an ERA over 5. Fullerton has the definite advantage of using Colin O'Connell in this spot. They may even risk using their #4 starter to potentially have O'Connell in line for a Stanford rematch. If Fullerton can get an early lead, it should be lights out for Illinois.

    Gainesville Regional
One of the better games of the postseason took place on Saturday with Florida edging Miami, 5-4. It was the fourth win this season for the Gators over the Hurricanes. Florida took a 4-2 lead in the 5th on the power of four hits and a fielding error by Miami. The Hurricanes struck back quickly though with a run in the 6th and then tied it with another in the 7th. The game headed to the 9th still tied and then Miami self destructed again. They allowed a base runner to reach on an error and then he advanced to second on a balk. A wild pitch after a walk then put runners on 2nd and 3rd. An intentional walk to load the bases and then the winning run came home off the bat of a Nelson Fontana RBI single. Miami has to regroup for Jacksonville. The Dolphins staved off a late Manhattan comeback to earn a 5-4 win. Jacksonville will be a confident bunch on Sunday. They played Miami close until late when their bullpen imploded for four runs in a 7-2 'Canes win. Miami for their part will want another shot at the Gators. Expect that to be the fuel that propels them in Sunday's elimination game with Jacksonville, but also watch out for a hangover.

    Houston Regional
Baylor pulled off the upset against top seeded Rice as a nice +170 dog on Saturday. The Bears got to Rice early with a two run first and then added the game winner in the 3rd on a RBI groundout. Rice committed two costly errors that led to an unearned run. Baylor pitcher Josh Turley went the whole way, fanning seven and scattering seven hits. The Bears now hold the position of power as Rice will face California in the first elimination game on Sunday. Cal advanced by pounding Alcorn State, 10-6. Cal had three players with two RBI games. Cal's bullpen has been taxed a bit these first two days, so expect the hosts to use their superior pitching to get to the second game on Sunday. A Rice-Baylor rematch should be excellent.

    Los Angeles Regional
Trevor Bauer did what an ace is supposed to do, keep his team alive. Facing elimination after a shocking Day 1 loss, UCLA used a complete game effort from Bauer to eliminate Fresno State, 3-1. Bauer was electric with 14 strikeouts. The Bruins now face San Francisco for the second time in this regional. The Dons shocked the Bruins on Friday. Don't expect a repeat as UCLA remains pitching rich and set-up to survive one more game at least. UC-Irvine is the beneficiary as the Anteaters have won both their games here. They shut down San Francisco 4-1 on Saturday. Irvine got all it needed from Matt Whitside who went the distance. Drew Hillman launched a two run homer run that provided the winning runs. Irvine now waits for the survivor of the UCLA-SF rematch.

    Nashville Regional
Another top seed with little to worry about is Vanderbilt. Vandy whipped Troy 10-2 as the Commodores got multiple RBI games from four batters in route to a 10-2 win. Troy now faces elimination against Belmont. The Bruins knocked Oklahoma State off 3-2 on Saturday behind eight strong innings from Chase Brookshire. He limited Okie State to just three hits. After being a solid run scoring club in the regular season, Belmont has struggled for runs in Nashville. Troy at least showed some prowess against Oklahoma State in their opener. Still, this looks like a classic toss-up game. Belmont played some good SEC competition in the regular season. That could pay off in this sort of setting plus already having survived an elimination game. If they get labelled with plus money, they're worth a shot. Vanderbilt should pick up the remants of whichever team survives and not leave much doubt though in the end.

    Tallahassee Regional
Florida State was tested again on Saturday, but passed by Alabama 9-5. The Seminoles offense pounded out 13 hits, four from James Ramsey who drove in four. Their pitching was still a bit dicey as Sean Gilmartin gave up five earned. Solid relief work though enabled FSU to rally back from a 5-4 deficit and earn its spot at the head of the class in this regional. Alabama will now play Central Florida in an elimination spot. UCF routed Bethune-Cookman 16-5. Their four and five hitters combined for nine RBI and six of the Golden Knights 20 hits. Alabama beat UCF on Friday, 5-3 and never really looked threatened in that one. The Tide's experience here could be key, but UCF obviously has offensive talent and they'll be facing the back portion of the Tide rotation potentially. At a dog price, I'd say UCF is worth a shot. FSU should ultimately pick apart which ever team survives.

    Tempe Regional
Arizona State flexed its muscles on Saturday to leave no doubt that they want in on the Super Regionals. The Sun Devils, a day after escaping with a 9th inning rally, took it to Charlotte early and often in route to a 16-1 win. ASU popped off for a run in the 1st and added another in he 3rd before they scorched Charlotte with a five run 4th inning. Riccio Torrez did damage with four RBI and Catcher Xorge Carrillo added three more to go with five hits. Kramer Champlin worked around some wildness with walks to limit the 49ers to just one hit and no runs in seven innings of work. ASU will now await the winner of Sunday's elimination game that pits Charlotte against Arkansas. The Razorbacks used solid pitching to stifle New Mexico in an elimination setting on Saturday, 3-0. Their ace, D.J. Baxendale went eight and gave up just four hits along with seven strikeouts. All the offense they needed came courtesy of a Jarrod McKinnery RBI double in the 2nd that was part of a two run innings. Charlotte outlasted Arkansas 3-2 on Friday and Sunday's rematch should be every bit as intense. Arkansas has experience and perhaps motivation on its side as it was Arizona State who eliminated the Hogs in a Super Regional last year. You have to think Arkansas would like to get another shot at the Sun Devils. I slightly favor Arkansas here, but their price is likely to be close to -200 and maybe not worth the tension.

As with yesterday, there are not very many if any lines that are available at the time of this recap. So, I'll simply list out my predictions/leans for the 1st slate of Elimination Games on Sunday and then match them up to the lines when they come out as far as potential plays. Good Luck with your selections.

    Miami over Jacksonville
    UCF over Alabama
    Maine over James Madison/UNDER
Stetson-NC State - Too Close to Call
    East Carolina over St.John's
    Arizona over Seton Hall
Texas over Texas State/Texas State Spread
    Rice over California/UNDER
    Coastal Carolina over UConn/OVER
    Georgia Tech over Austin Peay
    Belmont over Troy/UNDER
    TCU over Oral Roberts/OVER
    Arkansas over Charlotte
Georgia-Creighton - Too Close to Call
UCLA over San Francisco/UNDER depending on #
    Fullerton over Illinois

Also, of the teams sitting at 2-0 and waiting for an elimination game on Sunday night, these are the most vulnerable to having to play on Monday again in my estimation.

    Baylor
The prospects of playing Rice again are pretty solid. If the Owls survive for a rematch, no one would bet against them rally on their home field. Baylor has beaten them twice this season so that bodes well for the Bears trying to take one of two from them. Still, it won't be easy to close that team and their pitching out.

    Dallas Baptist
How many times can one team beat another in the same season? This unheralded Indepedent has beaten TCU three times. All have been close and there's certainly got to be some blood boiling in Ft.Worth for the Frogs. If TCU can get another shot at DBU on Sunday, it would be shocking to me for this experienced bunch not to at least force a Monday game.

    Stanford
The Cardinal got masterful pitching in their first two games in the regional. Their #3 is pretty good in Dean McArdle, but Fullerton is a pretty solid four deep pitching staff. If Fullerton gets another shot at Stanford and can manage the win on Sunday night - it could set up a brilliant Monday match-up with Pill and Appel. Watch Fullerton's game against Illinois as a barometer for the first elimination game with Stanford if it does happen, if the Titans struggle to score again, I would not hesitate to take a shot with Stanford on Sunday night.

    MAINE-JAMES MADISON UNDER 13.5 [+105]
Maine cannot engage James Madison in an offensive game and they have played both of the first games in Chapel Hill in the same style. Get excellent pitching and try to piece together enough to scratch through some runs. No named starter for Maine which could go to an inexperienced pitcher to start most likely with Stephen Perakslis likely to come to the rescue if he cannot keep JMU down. For the Dukes, not sure on the starter but they will likely turn to Game 1 starter and ace Sean Tierney if needed. Tierney only went 1.2 IP on Friday and could easily give them some innings. Going to wait a little longer to book as this starts at 1:00pm ET to see who the listed starters are for the elimination game.

    UCONN-COASTAL CAROLINA OVER 9.5 [+105]
Coastal has been bashing the ball in Clemson with 20 runs through the first two games. That includes laying 13 on UConn's ace in Game 1 plus seven more against Clemson yesterday. After struggling vs. Coastal ace Anthony Meo, the Huskies found their stroke against Sacred Heart and put up a 13 spot. Both teams have to turn to a #3 starter here and with the way the ball has been flying around this ballpark and with two teams in a groove ... I'll take my shot for runs.

Starting better today. Under cashes. Over in good shap. Texas gave up one in the 9th. Tied with Texas State at 3. Going to see if books post the night elimination games for tonight. Feel bad about my Alma Mater, TCU, but their starter left in the 1st inning against Oral Roberts. Even if they do win, Dallas Baptist is probably gonna be a good play tonight.

    MIAMI +210
The Canes flirted with disaster against Jacksonville, but were able to put it together with six runs in the final two frames to get to this survivor's spot against rivals Florida. The Gators have won four of four from Miami this season, including 5-4 here in the Gainesville Regional. Miami is able to turn to EJ Ecinosa in this spot. He pitched marvelously against the Gators earlier in the season, losing a 1-0 pitcher's duel. Florida likely goes with Brian Johnson. He shut Florida out in 5 IP in the regular season, striking out nine in the process. I'm going to ride the Canes here as they have the emotional boost of staving off elimination once already in fairly dramatic fashion. If Ecinosa can give them 6-7 solid innings, Canes should be in a spot to compete. 4:45pm ET start.

One more for now. 6:00pm ET start.

    FLORIDA STATE-ALABAMA OVER 9.5 [-130]
FSU sits in the pole position in this regional and they bashed Bama for nine runs in the first meeting on Saturday. The Noles offense had six against a stingy Bethune-Cookman club on Friday. Bama has been able to score five runs or better in each of its three games in this regional and will need to do at least that much likely to stave off elimination. The Tide have to dig deep now for a starter after using their closer this afternoon. He worked eight innings for the win, but now leaves Bama's back end vulnerable. FSU's pitching has been suspect all season outside their ace Gilmartin who got hit around a bit yesterday. Mike McGee is experienced, but carries a 4.33 ERA. The Tide go with Adam Windsor to start, he has a 5.09 ERA. Expect both teams to crank out some runs.

    CLEMSON-UCONN OVER 9.5 [-160]
Chalk is poor, but no reason not to believe more runs are available at Clemson today where the offenseshave ruled the roost. UConn has found its rhythm in a big way in the last two games with 25 runs. Clemson has back-to-back double digit games offensively. Hard not to see runs here.

    CALIFORNIA -120
Cal survived a first elimination game today against Rice and now gets a rematch against Baylor. Baylor beat them 6-4 on Friday. This region has been littered with errors and unearned runs. The team that fields best in this one could be the one that survives. Cal could still be in good shape pitching wise even with the extra game as one of their studs only went 1.2 IP in one of the first two games due to ineffectiveness. The offenses are about even here and this should be a tight game. We'll see if momentum works this time, but I'm siding with the Golden Bears to stay alive for another day here.

Illinois about to knock out Fullerton. Big shocker there. FlyingIllini will be geeked. Stanford in solid shape to take that region now.
