    Phil Jackson is right...

The NBA game kind of sucks now...

Phil Jackson: 'No structure, discipline' with NBA offenses

New York Knicks president Phil Jackson isn't a fan of the way the game is being played these days, and he used the NBA's biggest star -- LeBron James -- as an example of exactly what's wrong.

Jackson, in an interview with Bleacher Report from May that was published Monday, said the current "individualized" style of the NBA isn't disciplined and -- even more so -- just isn't pleasing to the eye.
Phil Jackson made clear his disdain for today's pick-and-roll-based offenses: "He might [travel] every other time he catches the basketball," Jackson said of LeBron James. "... He catches the ball, moves both his feet. You see it happen all the time." Nathaniel S. Butler/NBAE/Getty Images

"When I watch some of these playoff games, and I look at what's being run out there, as what people call an offense, it's really quite remarkable to see how far our game has fallen from a team game," Jackson told Bleacher Report. "Four guys stand around watching one guy dribble a basketball.

"I watch LeBron James, for example. He might [travel] every other time he catches the basketball if he's off the ball. He catches the ball, moves both his feet. You see it happen all the time. There's no structure, there's no discipline, there's no 'How do we play this game' type of attitude. And it goes all the way through the game. To the point where now guys don't screen -- they push guys off with their hands."

Jackson, who has 13 NBA titles to his credit -- 11 as a coach with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers and two as a player with the Knicks -- was just using James as an example. He said the problem is widespread as teams shun structured offenses in favor of constant pick-and-roll plays.

"The game actually has some beauty to it, and we've kind of taken some of that out of it to make it individualized," Jackson told Bleacher Report. "It's a lot of who we are as a country, individualized stuff.

"... It struck me: How can we get so far away from the real truth of what we're trying to do?"

Phil Jackson would trade his entire roster for Lebron James.

Lebron goes for the finals without a Scottie Pippen at his side.

His best player was a guy named Delly, and he sucked.

The guy has gone to five straight finals.

Michael had to take a break because his body couldn't handle it.

    Lebron clearly the better athlete.

    Better teammates, that's for sure.

If Lebron had Jordan's teammates, he probably wouldn't have waited seven years to win a title.

Jordan had good teammates the first 7 years? Oh I did not know that. I thought he was having trouble getting by 2 of the great teams of that era(pistons and celtics). I do remember he beat a very solid cavs team with a huge clutch shot.

And I remember Lebron just a few weeks ago beating a very solid Bulls team with a huge clutch shot.

And yes, Jordan's teammates in the early years were much better than Lebron's while in Cleveland.

Phil just loves throwing shade on people. He could have substituted Carmelo's name with Lebron and made the same point about his Knicks. Phil's off base with his assessment about the general state of the game, it's going more towards motion, passing and spacing offense and less about the iso offense. Phil must be getting Alzheimer's, he must have forgotten that MJ and Kobe were the kings of Hero Ball.

Yes lebron hit that huge shot as a -230 series favorite. I believe jordan's bulls beat the cavs as a huge dog. Anyways I love you comparing a guy who loses all the time in the finals with the best nba player ever. You should go for lunch with bill laimbeer.

Never saw either play so can't answer that. I saw jordan play his whole career. I saw bird/ magic/hakeem and jabbar for most of theirs.

Sure I can. Both played in eras against guys half their size. Bill played on the greatest team ever and was a defensive machine. Wilt was the Jim brown of his era/sport. I'm not going to tell you wilt was better.

But he did fail to make it to the finals for a number of years, losing to the Larry Bird Celtics twice and the Isiah Thomas Piston's three times in a row.

...and as soon as Scottie, Rodman, and Phil Jackson left him, Michael couldn't even get the Wizards into the playoffs in the weak Eastern conference.

Michael without Scottie doesn't make the playoffs.

Lebron without Wade makes it to the finals.

    I'd say we're done here.

You obviously have a love affair with james. Enjoy him he has a few more years left. He will probably win it next year.
