After making the surprising announcement last week that he was “ready to roll” against the Indianapolis Colts, who beat the Minnesota Vikings, 34-6, on Sunday, Adrian Peterson has been ruled out of Saturday’s much-anticipated matchup against the Green Bay Packers.

In an announcement posted to the team’s website Friday, Peterson was listed as having an injured knee and groin.

The 31-year-old running back tore his meniscus in his right knee while playing against the Packers in Week 2 of the season and soon underwent surgery. After the game against the Colts on Sunday, in which Peterson carried six times, he said he suffered only minor “nicks,” according to ESPN.

Previously, however, Peterson has made it clear that he did not plan on playing in any games that didn’t have playoff implications. While the Vikings aren’t mathematically eliminated, their chances of making the postseason are slim.

With a 7-7 record, they have only about a 2 percent chance of moving on, according to SB Nation. Not only do the Vikings have to win their last two regular season games versus the Packers and then the Chicago Bears, but they need both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Washington Redskins to lose their final two games. On top of that, the Vikings would also need Green Bay to lose its final game, against the Detroit Lions in Week 17.

Before last week’s announcement that he planned to play against the Colts, Peterson was expected back this weekend to face Green Bay. He decided to return early, however, because he didn’t want to have any regrets about not doing everything he could to help his team make the playoffs.

“The worst thing that could have happened was me waiting another week fearing my team would lose,” he said (via Scout.com).

Peterson’s longest gain against the Colts on Sunday was 13 yards, though it ended in a fumble.

Neither the Vikings nor Peterson have made clear whether he’ll play in the team’s final game, on Jan. 1.
