Big day Saturday
Race 1
Morning lines not out yet so don't know prices. Think progressive Smiling John will be tough in opener. Alex The Terror ran huge last out but will need to run similar jumping in class.
Race 2
Motion is doing well to start the fall meet but is only 1 for 11(i think) last 5 years debuting 1sters in turf sprints at Belmont. Don't like as the fave. Barahona may be the best bred and Gyarmati is decent with turf debuts but think he is more of a router. Will try Oscar Mike 2nd time starter for Mike Maker.
Race 3
4-Luckybuck Syndrome 12-1
Race 4
Not sure their chances of winning are great but 8-Trainingforsuccess 20-1 and 9-Northern Tripp 10-1 can figure at big prices. Maybe throw them in with either 3-Jax Heritage 5-1 or favored 5-Tapitation 5-2.
Race 5
Wedding Toast was a beast when last seen but that was almost 4 months ago. Think it will be hard to keep her and/or Curalina out of the exacta. 6-House Rules 10-1 is the price to use hoping for the two faves to burn each other out.
Race 6
6-Five Hearts 8-1 came back a new horse on the trainer change to B Mott. Now makes 2nd start after a year layoff and with any improvement can win at a decent price.
Race 7
2-La Verdad 4-5 once again looks all alone on the lead which is how she won all 4 starts this year including two grade 2s and a grade 3. 4-Wavell Avenue 12-1 and 6-Classic point 12-1 are the prices to use. 2-4-6
Race 8
Always liked this race. One of first graded stakes turf routes for the 2 year olds. C Brown is the new great turf trainer and runs import 1-Ray's The Bar 6-1 off debut win at Ascot in England. Exceed And Excel is a sire for sprinters over there so may be some limitations but too many plus signs and 6-1 is okay. 10-Brass Compass 20-1 looks lined up for a big improvement in 3rd start and definitely worth a stab .
Race 9
7-Rock Fall is the single. Hard to see him losing but the eye is probably on BC Sprint next month so this is a grade 1 prep while to others this is their BC Sprint. Maybe 2-Wildcat Red 15-1 can steal it winging it on the lead but would feel more comfortable with a hustling jock like J Ortiz instead of Lezcano. The alternative is whoever sets the pace. Figuring that out is tricky. Could be the 1,2,3 or 5. J Ortiz is on 1-Palace 8-1 and he may realize that the lead is whoever wants it and his hand is forced from the rail. 7-1-2
Race 10
Another clear standout imo in 1-Red Rifle 5-2 on what could be a very good day for Castellano. 7-Shining Copper 10-1 is better than ML would indicate.
Race 11
Could make a case for maybe 8 of the 12 runners. 1-East Bay Lodge 20-1 and 6-Fire Away 10-1 are my two so far. Still unsure of 3rd or may go 4 deep .
Santa Anita
Race 1
Should wait for prices to decide on this one. Would say Redneck Crazy is most likely to hit the board as he will be running fastest come stretch time and has progressed each of 3 starts. Aeon drops straight into maiden claimers after one race trying special weights. Could get brave if Quinonez grabs the lead and sets the pace.
Race 2
Sudden Fame could be a good one for Mandella as 1/2 to Titletown Five but he is just so so with 1sters. Forever Darling 2nd time out would be top choice depending on prices.
Race 3
Curlin's Fox figures to be very tough to beat on what could turn out to be a chalky chalky card if Curlin's Fox , Beholder , Songbird , and Nyquist all win. A win or good run over the tricky downhill course goes a long way and while Curlin's Fox is 2 for 2 on the hill the only other winner is Elementar 12-1 and Moons Over Me 15-1 has a good 2nd place run.
Race 4
Kenjisstorm 6-1 has been facing much tougher , draws the rail , goes 3rd off break , and adds blinks.
Race 5
Nyquist 6-5 tries two turns for the first time which is something that stretched his daddy Uncle Mo's limits. He does have a big edge speed wise so won't fault those trying to beat him as some horses decline drastically two turns . Distance is something Rare Candy 15-1 doesn't have to worry about having been routing on turf his last 2 starts and based on his AM works looks like he may be even better on dirt. Of course there has to be a Baffert since he won this race like 25 times. He sends Mt Veeder from the outside post in 3rd career start after winning first 2 sprints.
Race 6
Normally I stay away from Baffert on turf but Holiday Camp 20-1 is a huge price and ran a huge race figurewise in defeat last out. On dirt Baffert is arguably best in business at route to sprint. We''ll see if he can do it on turf. At even close to 20-1 I'm willing to try.
Race 7
Beholder 2-5 lays over the field by a lot. Crazier things have happened. Big Book 15-1 or Wild In The Saddle 12-1 would be prices to throw in.
Race 8
Beholder / Songbird 3-5 figure to make up a $2.50 double in R7 to R8. Same as with the male division applies to these fillies though. Two year olds stretching out to a route for the first time sometimes look like completely different animals. Of the 4 "locks" I would rank Beholder as toughest to beat by far, then Curlin's Fox , then either two year old Nyquist/Songbird just because you don't know if they can route until they do. My alternative would be Right There 20-1 who could be better then last 2 races when she drew the rail.
Race 9
Queen Of The Sand 8-1 is a Grade 3 winner at the distance and almost took down a Grade 1 at shorter.
Race 10
Smooth Roller 6-1 is just getting started as a 4 year old but has progressed into a very fast horse in only 3 starts. Another progression puts him in the picture if he can handle the class test.
Race 11
Last race Lucky Bryan 12-1 has probably the worst connections in the race. Trainer and jock hardly ever win so this is all about the horse. Pace figs say he should like going further than he did in only start and that was a tough race.
^^Wrote that and forgot to go back to the first couple races after morning lines showed up . At SA Redneck Crazy still may be tough to beat unless one of the two Myadi firsters is good. In the 2nd Sudden Fame is a play against imo as the fave. Mandella is a good trainer but seems like California loves him and bets everything he throws out there. His strength is dirt routes not baby races and sprints.
