Montreal Canadiens vs. Boston Bruins // Feb 12

    Original Six showdown

The Montreal Canadiens (31-18-8) and the Boston Bruins (28-23-6) are typically model franchises of consistency. However, at the moment, both are going through turmoil as the Bruins recently fired their head coach Claude Julien, and the Canadiens have hit a rough patch.

    Hard times for the Habs

Any slip up by the Habs in the hockey haven that is Montreal usual escalates into a city-wide panic attack. The Habs are 3-5-2 in their last 10 and have only one win in their last six matches. Even though the Habs still sit first in the Atlantic Division with 70 points, Michel Therrien’s seat at the front of the table is getting warmer and warmer.

Looking at their record more closely, it is not that impressive if you consider the fact the Habs got out to a hot start of 13-2. Since then, they’ve been down right mediocre, at best. Carey Price will get the start after Al Montoya lost last night against the St. Louis Blues, but even their most valuable player has been shaky. The Habs are 13-11-2 on the road and have not been able to rely on Price’s greatness that they have in the past. Even with their current slump, the Habs are still top 10 in the league in goals per game (8th), goals against per game (6th), and power play percentage (5th).

    The Beantown makeover

While all eyes have been on the New England Patriots and their Super Bowl triumph, the Bruins took the time to quietly get rid of the longest tenured coach in the NHL. After 10 years, Claude Julien was given the boot. Again, most markets wouldn’t mind having a team that is third in the Atlantic Division, but Boston isn’t most markets. As we have been reminded as of late, it’s the city of champions.

The Bruins are 14-13 at home this season and are hovering around .500 with a record of 5-4-1 in their last 10. The Bruins are above average defensively thanks to another all-star year from Tuukka Rask. They give up 2.7 goals per game, and the Bruins’ penalty kill has the ability to shut down and high-scoring power play unit. They are second in the league with a success rate of 85.9 per cent.

    The Final Breakdown

The Habs have won their last 9 games at TD Gardens... 9-0 in that span.... 9 Wins. 0 losses. 6 of the last 7 during that stretch have been won by 2+ goals. Habs need to rally off of a tough loss last night to the Blues. This should be a great divisional matchup, but Habs should come out on top. Don't be surprised if we get some overtime, either.

    Montreal Canadiens ML (+135) 1u
