NFL Player News - Conference Championship Week

    Courtesy of Footballguys. com

DEN - Joe Woods to be Denver's DC

Source: The Denver Post - Nicki Jhabvala

Denver Broncos defensive backs coach Joe Woods will be named the team's new defensive coordinator, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Woods is an up-and-coming coach in NFL ranks, and the team can keep the Wade Phillips system with Woods taking over. A very popular coach among the Broncos players, Woods helped craft the "No Fly Zone" aka the best secondary in the NFL. The Broncos defense should continue to be tough on opposing quarterbacks in 2017.

DEN - Denver unlikely to trade for QB Tony Romo

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

The Denver Broncos are not inclined to trade for Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo this offseason even though they are Romo's No. 1 preferred spot, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Romo struggled to stay healthy behind the league's best O-Line...what in the world could he possibly do behind Denver's Swiss cheese unit? The Broncos added Peyton Manning and it resulted in two Super Bowl appearances and one World Championship. We can't say that adding Romo would yield similar results. They're seemingly set with 2016 first-round pick Paxton Lynch and 2016 starter Trevor Siemian.

MIN - No timetable for QB Teddy Bridgewater

    Source: ESPN.com

Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer said QB Teddy Bridgewater (knee) is doing well in his recovery from a serious knee injury but there are too many factors in the recovery to determine a return date for Bridgewater.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sam Bradford is likely to start the 2017 season as the top quarterback for the Vikings. We're hoping that Bridgewater can get back to his healthy self, but who knows when that's going to be.

GB - TE Jared Cook goes off against Dallas

    Source: ESPN.com

Green Bay Packers TE Jared Cook finished with six catches on a team-high 11 targets for 106 yards and a touchdown in a 34-31 win over the Dallas Cowboys Sunday, Jan. 15.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cook's catch to set up the game-winning field goal will be replayed for years. It was an amazing display of his athleticism, concentration and body control. Without WR Jordy Nelson, the Packers went to Cook more and he came through.

HOU - WR Will Fuller has support of coach

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans WR Will Fuller dropped a potential touchdown in a 34-16 loss to the New England Patriots Saturday, Jan. 14, but head coach Bill O'Brien said Fuller is only going to improve and the drop wasn't the difference in the game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Coming out of college, Fuller was comparable to Panthers WR Ted Ginn -- speed and drops is the name of his game. Fuller's concentration was always something of a concern, but he'll make enough big plays going forward to make up the difference.

CHI - QB Brian Hoyer to become free agent

    Source: Spotrac.com

Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hoyer was limited to six games this year with the Bears. A fractured forearm ended his season after he threw for 1,445 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions. Some team in need of an experienced QB should be interested in the 31-year old veteran...most likely as depth.

ARI - RB Andre Ellington to become free agent

    Source: Spotrac.com

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The speedy back could use a change of scenery if he wants a larger role. He was the primary backup to David Johnson this year and had a career-low 96 yards rushing and a career-low 85 yards receiving. He may get a chance to compete for a starting role somewhere else in 2017. Ellington will have a lot to prove as the RB position is always cramped, will get more cramped with a great RB class coming in, and Ellington's injury history is also a concern.

ARI - TE Jermaine Gresham primed to hit market

    Source: Spotrac.com

Arizona Cardinals RB Jermaine Gresham will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gresham seemed to fit with the Cardinals, and we think they could bring him back for a good price.

ARI - RB Chris Johnson set to be FA

    Source: Spotrac.com

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

At 31-years old, Johnson still feels like he has something to prove. Over the last two years, Johnson has played in only 15 games. In 2016, Johnson was limited to four games as a groin injury that required surgery cut his season short. He should get a shot somewhere, but it might not be until training camp.

WAS - TE Vernon Davis will be FA

    Source: Spotrac.com

Washington Redskins TE Vernon Davis will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll see if Davis can get one final payday. He signed a one-year deal with Washington after doing next to nothing (except winning a Super Bowl) with the Broncos in 2015. Davis was great depth behind injury prone starter Jordan Reed, and Davis performed well as a reserve or as a starter this year. If the price is right, Washington would be wise to bring him back.

WAS - WR Pierre Garcon set to be free agent

    Source: Spotrac.com

Washington Redskins WR Pierre Garcon will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Garcon wants to prove that he's more than a possession receiver. He comes off a 2016 season where he went over 1,000 yards receiving for just the second time in his career. Early speculation has Garcon as a potential target of the Baltimore Ravens in free agency.

WAS - WR DeSean Jackson to be UFA

    Source: Spotrac.com

Washington Redskins WR DeSean Jackson will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jackson is done in Washington, and there's a chance he winds up back with the Eagles. His speed would certainly be a welcome addition to the Philadelphia offense.

WAS - QB Kirk Cousins will be free agent

    Source: Spotrac.com

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Washington has to find a way to keep Cousins, and that may come with a long-term contract or a franchise tag for the second year in a row. With 4,917 passing yards in 2016 (4th-highest in the league), Cousins led the way through the air for the Washington passing attack. With WRs DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon likely to move on in free agency, Cousins may have to work with a revamped group of receiving weapons in 2017...if Washington keeps him.

TB - RB Jacquizz Rodgers set to be free agent

    Source: Spotrac.com

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Jacquizz Rodgers will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rodgers had to start five games for the Bucs in 2016, and he was impressive when called up to do more. He should return to Tampa as a reserve/backup running back.

    18. PIT - WR Markus Wheaton will be free agent
    Source: Spotrac.com

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Markus Wheaton will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wheaton enters free agency on a whimper. He was limited to three games this year before a labrum injury ended his season. Wheaton will have settle for a "prove it" deal on the open market.

PIT - Le'Veon Bell set to be UFA

    Source: Spotrac.com

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Steelers will franchise tag Bell if they can't get a long-term deal worked out. The two sides seem to have a mutual desire to get something done.

OAK - RB Latavius Murray will be free agent

    Source: Spotrac.com

Oakland Raiders RB Latavius Murray will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A sixth-round pick in 2013, Murray has had quite a bit of success with the Raiders. He rushed for a career-high 12 touchdowns in 2016, and he could be brought back for more in 2017. Murray has already expressed a desire to return to the Raiders.

PIT - WR Antonio Brown may receive lucrative deal

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown may receive a contract extension this offseason that would make him the highest paid receiver in the NFL.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brown is arguably the best receiver in Steelers history. Think about that....with Hall of Fame potential, the Steelers should make Brown the highest-paid wide receiver in the league. The deal could pay him more than the $15 million that Cincinnati Bengals WR A.J. Green receives per season.

SEA - WR Devin Hester planning to retire

Source: The Tacoma News Tribune - Dave Boling

Seattle Seahawks WR Devin Hester said that he has probably played the final game of his NFL career. The 34-year-old returned five kickoffs for 194 yards in the loss to the Atlanta Falcons Saturday, Jan. 14, and is the league's all-time leader in return scoring.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Nobody has ever made the Hall of Fame strictly as a return man, but Hester could be the first. His 20 career return touchdowns is going to be tough to beat.

He should go to the Hall of Fame with 20 returns. Some teams go years without even having a return for a TD.

    Tuesday Update

GB - WR Jordy Nelson still has breathing issues

    Source: FOXSports.com - Cameron DaSilva

Green Bay Packers WR Jordy Nelson (ribs) said Sunday, Jan. 15, that he still isn't able to breathe normally because of his ribs injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Nelson's status for the NFC Championship Game against the Falcons is up in the air. There's a chance he could be very limited or maybe not even participate in practice during the week. Let's call him a game-time decision for now, and we'll all be monitoring his practice status.

NE - Josh McDaniels staying with Pats

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is expected to remain with the Patriots in 2017 after interviewing for the San Francisco 49ers' head coaching position, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McDaniels will have plenty of options next year when the coaching carousel is spinning. With him stepping out of consideration, Falcons OC Kyle Shanahan is likely to be the 49ers new head coach.

DAL - TE Jason Witten plans to return

Source: The Dallas Morning News - Brandon George

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten plans to return in 2017 for his 15th season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sure, Witten has lost a step (or two) but he still has great concentration and soft hands. He should continue to be a fine target for a young and learning QB Dak Prescott.

PIT - WR Antonio Brown could be fined

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown may be fined for violating the NFL's social media policy for his post-game live stream in the Steelers' locker room.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The "No Fun League" strikes again. League policy prohibits players from posting messages on social media 90 minutes before kickoff through post-game interviews.

SEA - WR Tyler Lockett should be ready

Source: 710 ESPN Seattle - Liz Mathews

Seattle Seahawks WR Tyler Lockett (knee) is expected to be ready for the start of the 2017 season, according to head coach Pete Carroll.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lockett's season was cut short by a horrific injury, but the prognosis is good. When he returns, Lockett will compete with Paul Richardson for targets.

Seattle Seahawks RB C.J. Prosise's (shoulder) durability has become a concern for head coach Pete Carroll and the Seahawks.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A converted wide receiver in college, Prosise looked good as a receiving and change-of-pace back for Seattle this year. Carroll said Prosise will need to show that he can stay healthy next year.

KC - QB Alex Smith expected to remain starter

Source: NFL Network - Andrew Siciliano

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith was given a vote of confidence Monday, Jan. 16, in regards to holding onto the starting job in 2017.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There was some slight buzz about the team making a switch to Nick Foles in 2017. That's not the case according to Andy Reid. He told reporters: 'Do I still think we can win with Alex? Yeah, we were right there.'

JAX - Chip Kelly talking with Jags on Monday

Source: 1010XL AM - Hays Carlyon

The Jacksonville Jaguars are meeting with former San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly on Monday, Jan. 16, presumably to discuss a potential fit as an offensive coordinator.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Jaguars could use some more punch on offense. They have the talent to thrive, but it all comes down to QB Blake Bortles and his development. He took a step back last year mechanically and will have to re-worked this offseason.

HOU - QB Brock Osweiler not assured of starting job

    Source: ESPN.com - Sarah Barshop

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler received a slight but expected vote of non-confidence Monday, Jan. 16, as head coach Bill O'Brien told reporters it is too early to know if Osweiler will be the starting quarterback at season because the team has a lot of evaluating to do.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Osweiler only got the starting job back because of an injury to Tom Savage. It's an awkward situation, especially since Osweiler won the Wild Card game against the Raiders.

ATL - WR Julio Jones should play in NFC Championship

    Source: ESPN.com - Vaughn McClure

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones (toe) is expected to be limited during practice this week, but head coach Dan Quinn believes Jones will be 'ready to rock' for the NFC Championship Game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Jones is one of the toughest players in the game, and there's no doubt that he's going to play at home in the NFC Championship Game. The big veteran receiver should be able to take advantage of the Packers secondary. This game has shootout written all over it.

    Wednesday Update

GB - WR Jordy Nelson still a longshot for Sunday

    Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky

Green Bay Packers WR Jordy Nelson (ribs) has a chance to play in the NFC Championship Game against the Atlanta Falcons, but it is only a small chance, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Nelson has to be considered a game-time decision. If there's any way he can play, Nelson will find a way. Unless we hear positive reports out of practice, we don't think Nelson plays.

SF - 49ers 'honing in on' hiring Kyle Shanahan

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

The San Francisco 49ers are -- and have been -- 'honing in on hiring' Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan as their next head coach, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With Patriots OC Josh McDaniels taking his name out of the running, Shanahan clearly becomes the guy for the 49ers. He's turned Matt Ryan into an MVP candidate and the Falcons offense is one of the most high-powered units in the league. We're excited about what he could do in San Francisco, but there's a lot of work to be done before the 49ers are playoff contenders again.

JAX - 'Good chance' Jags hire Chip Kelly as OC

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Former San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly has a 'good chance' of being hired as the Jacksonville Jaguars' new offensive coordinator. He went into the interview believing he was going to get an offer and he already 'has some assistant hires ready.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That would be interesting....to say the least. The Jaguars offense has the pieces to be a high-powered unit if someone figures out what's wrong with QB Blake Bortles. Doug Marrone is a bright head coach, but it seems like an odd fit with Kelly running the offense. We're all for bold decisions, and this could propel Jacksonville to the next level....or it could end in spectacularly horrible fashion. You just never know with Kelly.

DAL - Trading QB Tony Romo is 'No. 1 priority'

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo is 'not going to be on (the team) in 2017,' according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, who states that trading the veteran quarterback is their 'No. 1 priority this offseason.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's time for Romo to move on as the Cowboys are set with Dak Prescott as their starting quarterback. Reports have indicated that Romo wants to go to the Broncos, but they don't have any interest in trading for him...at least at this time. There are plenty of teams who should be interested, but it comes down to Romo's contract (and whether or not it will be re-worked) and what the Cowboys actually want for the veteran passer.

DEN - Denver's defensive staff expected to stay

Source: The Denver Post - Nicki Jhabvala

Denver Broncos defensive coaches Bill Kollar, Reggie Herring and Fred Pagac are expected to return under new head coach Vance Joseph. Those moves have not yet been finalized, however.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Herring was up for the defensive coordinator position vacated by Wade Phillips, but it was Broncos DB coach Joe Woods who won that job. The Broncos defense is in good hands with Woods, and they're capable of maintaining their incredible play with most of the staff (on that side of the ball) staying in place.

Former Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley will interview again for Los Angeles Chargers' vacant defensive coordinator position Tuesday, Jan. 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Bradley would be an interesting fit for the Chargers. It would be intriguing to see him get his hands on DE Joey Bosa. There are some around the NFL who believe Bosa could be one of the best defenders in the league, and what we saw in 2016 could just be the tip of the iceberg.

Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt will be retained by new head coach Anthony Lynn.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The offense will have continuity with Whisenhunt staying on board. That's good news for Philip Rivers and Melvin Gordon. It's even better news for this offense with WR Keenan Allen set to come back healthy in 2017.

SD - RB Danny Woodhead ahead of schedule

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Great news for the Chargers here. Woodhead is one of the most versatile players in the league, and he's a dangerous weapon for defenses to contend with. Fantasy owners know what to expect from him, even as a change-of-pace back behind Melvin Gordon. In PPR leagues, Woodhead has RB2 upside each week because of his role in the offense.

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Ladarius Green (concussion) remains in the league's concussion protocol, according to head coach Mike Tomlin.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If Green could be back for the AFC Championship Game that would be a boost for the high-powered Steelers offense. In his first season with the Steelers, Green was only available for six games. We don't think he's going to be ready for this game.

SEA - TE Jimmy Graham will likely be back

    Source: ESPN.com - Sheil Kapadia
Seattle Seahawks TE Jimmy Graham is likely to return to the Seahawks next year, and head coach Pete Carroll raved about his play in 2016. 'I thought Jimmy had a terrific year,' Carroll said. 'He was explosive. He was dynamic. He blocked like he's never blocked before. He became a factor on the perimeter blocking stuff, and he's a highlight film. He's got so many big plays that he made during the year.'
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
It's remarkable to think what Graham did this year considering he was coming off a torn patellar tendon. He's got a cap number of $10 million with a $2 million roster bonus due this spring. It's likely the Seahawks work to extend Graham to lower that number.

3rd times the charm for chip Kelley. Just kidding. Remember the spurior fun and gun. That shit don't work in the pros. All guys are too fast. Only works in college when speed and talent are more than other teams.

    Thursday Update

GB - WR Jordy Nelson limited Wednesday

    Source: Packers.com

Updating a previous report, Green Bay Packers WR Jordy Nelson (ribs) was limited during practice Wednesday, Jan. 18.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He's no lock to play against the Falcons in the NFC Championship Game. If the Packers get Nelson back, it would greatly help their offense in a game where they'll likely have to play catch-up football. Nelson's status is unknown at this time, but a limited practice on Wednesday can be seen as a positive sign.

ATL - WR Julio Jones will not practice Wednesday

    Source: NFL.com - Ian Rapoport

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones (foot) will not practice Wednesday, Jan. 18, by design, according to Falcons head coach Dan Quinn.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No worries here. Jones will 'do more' later in the week, per Quinn.

GB - Geronimo Allison misses practice

    Source: Packers.com

Green Bay Packers WR Geronimo Allison (hamstring) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Jan. 18.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The rookie may have to do more if Jordy Nelson or Davante Adams can't play. Hamstring injuries are tricky and can be aggravated if not given time to heal. Expect the Packers to take it easy on the rookie WR this week.

NE - TE Martellus Bennett limited

    Source: Patriots.com

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots TE Martellus Bennett (knee) was limited during practice Wednesday, Jan. 18.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bennett says he's playing against the Steelers in the AFC Championship Game. We're likely to see him limited in practice all week.

GB - WR Davante Adams to miss some practices

    Source: Packers.com - Wes Hodkiewicz

Green Bay Packers WR Davante Adams (ankle) is not expected to practice until Saturday, Jan. 21, at the earliest, according to head coach Mike McCarthy.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's no telling if the Packers are going to have Jordy Nelson on the field against the Falcons, and now Adams is no lock to play either. That would greatly impact the Packers passing attack if those two are missing from the game.

SF - Kyle Shanahan likely to be 49ers coach

Source: NFL Network - Michael Silver

Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan is almost certain to accept the San Francisco 49ers' head coaching position, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're just waiting for Shanahan to be available to accept the job. Patriots OC Josh McDaniels has backed out of the race, and Shanahan is the clear favorite with nobody else as a realistically close competitor.

PIT - TE Ladarius Green not expected to suit up

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Ed Bouchette

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Ladarius Green (concussion) is not expected to play in the AFC Championship Game Sunday, Jan. 22, against the New England Patriots, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ed Bouchette.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It would be helpful to have a weapon like Green on the field against a high-powered Patriots team, but there's no way the Steelers are going to rush Green back into action. He's been out since Week 16 and may not even be ready if the Steelers were to make it to the Super Bowl.

JAX - Nathaniel Hackett to remain OC

    Source: Jaguars.com - John Oehser

Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett will remain as the team's offensive coordinator.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

So the Jaguars have said "no" to Chip Kelly running the offense. Instead, the team will continue with Hackett. He took over at the end of October as the OC for the Jags when Greg Olson was fired. The team should continue to be balanced on offense with Hackett running the show.

BAL - TE Dennis Pitta may be asked to rework deal

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens TE Dennis Pitta may be asked to restructure his contract this offseason because of his high salary cap figure for 2017.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pitta has a cap number of $7.7 million in 2017, and there's $4.4 million remaining in dead money. He led the league in receptions for TEs (86) this year, but Pitta's production does not match that price tag. We'll see if something gets reworked between the two sides.

OAK - Mike Tice still with Oakland

    Source: ESPN - Adam Caplan

Oakland Raiders offensive line coach Mike Tice has agreed to a new deal with the Raiders and will be on the coaching staff next season, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Raiders have spent a lot of money on their offensive line, but it's Tice who gets everyone to play together as an outstanding group. He's one of the best offensive line coaches in the league, and this hiring insures the strong play up front will continue for the Raiders.

SD - QB Philip Rivers denies trade request

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Kevin Acee

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers refuted reports Tuesday, Jan. 17, that claimed he asked for a trade or wanted to be dealt, specifically to the San Francisco 49ers.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

On Jimmy Kimmel LIVE! Rivers admitted that he's 'warming up' to the idea of playing in Los Angeles. He's all about the team, and we doubt he'll ask for a trade even if moving cities is not ideal. Rivers has a no-trade clause in his contract.

CLE - Browns may target QB Tyrod Taylor

    Source: ESPN.com - Pat McManamon

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor could draw interest from the Cleveland Browns if they cut QB Robert Griffin III, according to ESPN's Pat McManamon.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Even though Griffin is under contract with the Browns in 2017, we don't think he stays with the team. He has a cap hit of $9.2 million, and the Browns can save $7.5 million by releasing RGIII. Taylor would provide the team with a strong-armed playmaker, and his beautiful deep passes would look great with WRs Terrelle Pryor and Corey Coleman on the other end.

JAX - Jaguars expected to cut TE Julius Thomas

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike DiRocco
Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas is expected to be released by the team this offseason, according to ESPN's Mike DiRocco. He has the fourth-highest cap figure ($8.3 million) in 2017.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
This wouldn't be a total surprise if it happens. Thomas has failed to play a full 16-game season in his pro career, and he's missed 11 games for the Jaguars since signing a five-year, $46 million deal with the team in 2015. When healthy, Thomas has a nose for the end zone and can create mismatches with his basketball skill set. Just don't ask him to block, and don't expect him to stay healthy. He'd get some interest, perhaps limited, if on the open market.

    Friday Update

GB - WR Jordy Nelson to work with rehab group

    Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky

Green Bay Packers WR Jordy Nelson (ribs) will be on the field with the rehab group during practice Thursday, Jan. 19, according to head coach Mike McCarthy.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's a good step. Nelson will likely play, though head coach Mike McCarthy said under regular season conditions, the receiver wouldn't likely be active. We're cautiously optimistic about him playing, but keeping a lower than normal ceiling on his expected production.

ATL - WR Julio Jones to sit again

    Source: ESPN.com - Vaughn McClure

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones (toe) will not participate in practice Thursday, Jan. 19, but said he will be ready for the NFC Championship game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

They are just resting him. The Packers secondary is vulnerable, though they will pay extra attention to Jones. We expect Jones to be one of the better options in fantasy this weekend, though, as Matt Ryan will definitely target him a lot.

IND - QB Andrew Luck idle three months

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Updating an earlier report, Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck (shoulder) will begin throwing in three months, and he'll be ready to return fully in six months.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're hoping this fixes whatever has been going on with him the last two years. It would help if the Colts can get him an offensive line as well.

ATL - WR Taylor Gabriel still limited

    Source: ESPN.com - Vaughn McClure

Atlanta Falcons WR Taylor Gabriel (foot) was limited in practice Thursday, Jan. 19.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're not worried about him and feel he will be a good producer this weekend with the attention given to Julio Jones by the Packers secondary - which isn't a tremendous unit to begin with.

PIT - TE Ladarius Green downgraded

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Ed Bouchette

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Ladarius Green (concussion, illness) did not practice Thursday, Jan. 19, after being limited in practice Wednesday, Jan. 18.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This could pave the way for a nice game for Jesse James. He had 83 yards on five catches against Kansas City, and could easily equal that with attention going to Antonio Brown.

LAC - RB Melvin Gordon excited about new coach

    Source: Chargers.com - Ricky Henne

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon said he is happy that the team hired head coach Anthony Lynn because of Lynn's success as a running backs coach for many years. 'He obviously knows the game, so if he sees some wrinkles, I've got another set of eyes. Everyone's got some holes in their game, and he'll bring some wisdom to help get my game right when I need it. I've got someone who has been around the game for so long and coached some of the league's best players. He'll know how to help me. He's perfect for me, so I'm excited to get this thing rolling under him,' Gordon said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lynn really got LeSean McCoy on the right track, and could mean good things for Gordon once the Chargers back gets healthy again. We'll be waiting to see how Gordon looks in the spring but we're cautiously optimistic.

GB - Geronimo Allison may sit a few days

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Tom Silverstein

Green Bay Packers WR Geronimo Allison (hamstring) may not practice until Saturday, Jan. 21, according to head coach Mike McCarthy.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Allison saw his role reduced when Randall Cobb came back, but if Jordy Nelson or Davante Adams are limited by their injuries, he could find himself targeted a bunch. He's a high-risk play this weekend.

BAL - QB Joe Flacco happy that OC will return

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco said he has a great working relationship with offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and is happy that Mornhinweg will return next season. Flacco threw for 3,035 yards, 15 touchdowns and 11 interceptions under Mornhinweg in 2016.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It was a shaky season for Flacco, so he's more happy than we are about it. The Ravens need to get him some more dynamic receivers...especially with Steve Smith retiring.

NYG - RB Adrian Peterson interested in Giants

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Andrew Krammer

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson said he would be interested in the New York Giants if he becomes available this offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

So he wants to go from a team with a garbage offensive line to a team with a slightly less garbage offensive line? Peterson doesn't seem to have much left in the tank, but we might be interested in the right situation. This isn't it. The Giants need running back help, but they need an offensive line as well.

TB - Tampa Bay an option for RB Adrian Peterson?

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Andrew Krammer

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson said he would be interested in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers if he becomes available this offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Where's the upside for the Bucs here? Maybe Doug Martin isn't the answer anymore, or maybe Peterson won't be more than a backup. But we've seen him behind sketchy offensive lines and Peterson doesn't seem to have much in the tank anymore.

HOU - RB Adrian Peterson interested in Houston

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Andrew Krammer

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson said he would be interested in the Houston Texans if he becomes available this season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's time for the Vikings and Peterson to part ways, but Houston—while close to home—would not benefit from an aging Peterson. Lamar Miller did well this year, so adding Peterson does nothing for this team, who needs a quarterback, not a running back.

TEN - QB Marcus Mariota on track in recovery

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota (leg) recently met with a doctor and is on track in his recovery from a broken fibula. Head coach Mike Mularkey said he is not sure when Mariota will be able to practice but expects him to be ready for the start of the season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mariota was really making strides as a quarterback, so we hope he isn't held back by the injury. For a guy who is dangerous when mobile, a leg injury is always a concern long-term.

GB - WR Davante Adams expected to play

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Green Bay Packers WR Davante Adams (ankle) is expected to play in the NFC Championship game Sunday, Jan. 22.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

How effective will he be, though? Keep an eye on this, as Mike McCarthy has said that in a regular season game, Adams would be sidelined. That's not a great sign, and could be cause for concern.

ATL - RB Devonta Freeman with mixed bag against GB

    Source: USA TODAY Fantasy Sports

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman rushed 11 times for 35 yards and a touchdown with four catches for 23 yards and another touchdown against the Green Bay Packers in Week 8.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Packers run defense is still ranked pretty highly, but it's a bit of a paper tiger, feasting on teams which aren't very good. Ezekiel Elliott dropped 125 on this unit last week and while we expect Freeman to fall short of that mark, he should be able to find plenty of room to run on Sunday.

    Saturday Update

PIT - Full practice for Le'Veon Bell

    Source: Steelers.com

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (non-injury) fully participated in practice Friday, Jan. 20, and is not on the injury report for the AFC Championship game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bell's gotten some rest this week, and he'll need it as we expect him to have a large role as the centerpiece of the Steelers offense. He's had 59 carries combined in the two Steelers playoffs games so far.

GB - Questionable tag for WR Jordy Nelson

    Source: Packers.com

Green Bay Packers WR Jordy Nelson (ribs) did not participate in practice Friday, Jan. 20, and is listed as questionable for the NFC Championship game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Nelson has to be on the doubtful side of questionable. He may want to play, but a ribs injury is incredibly painful and he wouldn't be himself. We'd be shocked if Nelson plays against the Falcons on Sunday.

ATL - WR Julio Jones listed as limited

    Source: ESPN.com - Vaughn McClure

Updating a previous report, Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones (toe) was officially limited during practice Friday, Jan. 20, but is not listed on the injury report for the NFC Championship game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Falcons are giving Jones a bit of rest, but he's good to go for the NFC Championship Game on Sunday. He could have a big game against the Packers as Matt Ryan's favorite target.

NE - TE Martellus Bennett questionable

    Source: Steelers.com

New England Patriots TE Martellus Bennett (knee) was limited during practice Friday, Jan. 20, and is listed as questionable for the AFC Championship game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bennett is likely to play against the Steelers, and his role in creating mismatches against the Steelers linebackers could be a difference maker for the Patriots.

Green is unlikely to play against the Patriots, but his limited practice on Friday does open up the possibility.

GB - Geronimo Allison misses practice

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The undrafted rookie would be in for a larger role if WR Jordy Nelson doesn't play....but he may not play due to this hamstring injury. That would leave Jeff Janis with a spot behind Davante Adamds and Randall Cobb if both Nelson and Allison are out on Sunday.

GB - WR Davante Adams listed as questionable

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Packers need him to play if at all possible. Jordy Nelson (ribs) and Geronimo Allison (hamstring) are both questionable to play against the Falcons on Sunday.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's no need for the Browns to break out a blank check for Crowell as they have a restricted free agent tender to put on him. We'll see if the two sides can come together on a new deal.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We just don't see that being the case. It's a QB-desperate league and there would be more than a few teams interested in Romo if he were to become available on the open market.

    Sunday Update

GB - RB Christine Michael added to injury report

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Green Bay Packers RB Christine Michael (back) has been added to the injury report for the NFC Championship game because of a back injury and is listed as questionable.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Michael wasn't in line to do much anyway. In two postseason games with the Packers, Michael has only 10 carries for 47 yards. If he's limited against the Falcons, it just means more work for Ty Montgomery.

IND - Ryan Grigson relieved of duties

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Indianapolis Colts general manager Ryan Grigson was relieved of his duties Saturday, Jan. 21, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

What took them so long? He's failed to put the proper talent around QB Andrew Luck, and Grigson missed on several draft picks and free agent selections. Colts owner Jim Irsay has been trying to get Peyton Manning in some sort of VP of Football Operations role, and getting rid of Grigson opens a door for that to happen.

IND - QB Peyton Manning not GM candidate for Colts

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay said former NFL QB Peyton Manning is not a candidate for the team's general manager position.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Irsay has reportedly been pursuing Manning for an executive role. At this time, Manning is happy spending time with his young kids but we could see him back in football soon.

IND - Chuck Pagano to remain head coach

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Indianapolis Colts head coach Chuck Pagano will return to the team for the 2017 season, according to owner Jim Irsay.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pagano is safe for now, but he's most certainly on the hot seat in 2017. He's gone 8-8 each of the last two years, so a playoff run would likely be the only thing that saves his job. The Colts play in the weakest division in football so that is not too tall an order.

IND - Jimmy Raye to interview for Colts GM job

    Source: SI.com - Albert Breer

Indianapolis Colts vice president of football operations Jimmy Raye III will interview for the team's general manager job, according to owner Jim Irsay.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Raye has an impressive reputation around the league, so moving him up to general manager would make sense. He was a San Diego Chargers Scout (1996-99), Director of College Scouting (2000-07), and later their Director of Player Personnel (2008-12) before joining the Colts as their Vice President of Football Operations in 2013.

GB - Max McCaffrey added to roster

    Source: Packers.com

Green Bay Packers practice squad WR Max McCaffrey was promoted to the active roster Saturday, Jan. 21.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a sign the Packers will be without one of their injured WRs for the NFC Championship Game against the Falcons. Jordy Nelson (ribs) is listed as questionable, but he's more likely doubtful for this contest. Geronimo Allison (hamstring) and Davante Adams (ankle) are also banged up.

NYG - Odell Beckham had trouble with drops

    Source: ESPN.com - Jordan Raanan

New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. had six drops in his final 82 targets of the 2016 season. He had only nine drops in the first 381 targets of his career.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He's not known as a player who drops passes. He had seven drops this year, but only four drops in 2015 and two drops in 2014 -- all while being one of the most heavily targeted WRs in the league. Beckham did suffer a minor thumb injury during the team's Week 11 game, which may have affected his play.

WAS - Washington would like TE Vernon Davis back

Source: The Washington Post - Mike Jones

Washington Redskins impending free-agent TE Vernon Davis is a player the Redskins would like to re-sign this offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Davis filled in nicely for an injured Jordan Reed this year, compiling 44 catches for 583 yards and two touchdowns. He was signed to a one-year "prove it" deal in 2016, so Davis may want a larger payday in 2017. Davis was a good fit with Washington, and we have a feeling they'll be able to keep him around at a good price.

NE - Chip Kelly meets with Bill Belichick

    Source: ESPN - Chris Mortensen

Former San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly met with New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick earlier this week, according to a league source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kelly and Belichick are friends, so it makes sense that the two would meet now that Kelly is free from being the 49ers head coach. However, there are no current openings on the Patriots' coaching staff and it is uncertain if a possible role in the front office was discussed.

WAS - Rob Kelley underwent knee surgery

    Source: CSNWashington.com - Ben Standig

Washington Redskins RB Rob Kelley (knee) underwent a minor surgery following the end of the season to repair the meniscus in his right knee. He is expected to need only two to three weeks to fully recover.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kelley's procedure is considered minor, and he was able to play with the (likely meniscus) injury over the last two games of the season. He'll be the lead back for Washington in 2017, but Kelley is just a two-down banger with little receiving ability. Expect Washington to use a change-of-pace back behind Kelley.

WAS - Kevin O'Connell joins Redskins staff

    Source: FOXSports.com - Bruce Feldman

Former Cleveland Browns quarterbacks coach Kevin O'Connell was named to the same post for the Washington Redskins on Friday, Jan. 20.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
This move signals that Matt Cavanaugh should be promoted to offensive coordinator for Washington.

ALL three injured Packer receivers are expected to play, although Nelson should be limited.
