NFL Player News - Conference Championship Week

PIT - Ben Roethlisberger plans to return in 2018

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger told reporters Sunday, Jan. 14 that he plans to return for the 2018 season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
He's nipping a big offseason story in the bud here. It's not impossible for him to change his mind, but we would proceed in dynasty leagues and preseason redraft leagues as if he will return for next season.

JAX - WR Allen Hurns doesn't show up

    Source: The Associated Press

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Allen Hurns posted just one reception for 12 yards on two targets in the AFC Divisional Round playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, Jan. 14.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Hurns has been mostly a non-factor for the Jaguars despite Allen Robinson going down for the year in Week 1. He might be a cap casualty if the team brings Robinson back this offseason.

JAX - RB T.J. Yeldon shows well in playoff win

    Source: The Associated Press

Jacksonville Jaguars RB T.J. Yeldon ran five times for 20 yards and a touchdown in the AFC Divisional Round playoff win against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, Jan. 14, and he added three grabs for a team-high 57 yards.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Yeldon's big catch and run late helped the team salt away late. He gives the Jaguars a solid backup in case Leonard Fournette's ankle causes him to come up gimpy next week.

BUF - WR Zay Jones to undergo surgery

    Source: BillsWire - Robert Quinn

Buffalo Bills WR Zay Jones (shoulder) is scheduled to undergo surgery Tuesday, Jan. 16, to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder that he played with for the majority of the season, according to his father.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones had a disappointing rookie season despite ample opportunities for a large role in a weak Bills wide receiver corps. 2018 will be crucial for his development, but Jones will be in an offense is under construction.

ARI - Brian Flores expected to be finalist

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

New England Patriots linebackers coach Brian Flores is expected to be one of the finalists for the Arizona Cardinals head coaching position, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Flores is only 36 and has some offensive coaching experience with the Patriots in addition to extensive experience on the defensive side of coaching. The NFL continues to chase the Patriots success through their assistant coaches.

DET - Detroit likely to hire Matt Patricia

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

The Detroit Lions likely will hire New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia as their next head coach, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He would be working with a GM (Bob Quinn) from the Patriots system, which would assist in finding good fits for the Lions defense, which has holes at multiple positions. It seems likely that the Patriots are going to lose both of their coordinators this offseason.

IND - Josh McDaniels favorite for HC job

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is considered the clear favorite for the Indianapolis Colts head coaching position, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That should cause excitement in Andrew Luck's fantasy outlook for 2018, as long as he can make a full recovery after losing 2017 to problems following his offseason shoulder surgery.

CAR - NFL doing concussion protocol investigation on CAR

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

The National Football League is currently investigating whether the Carolina Panthers properly followed concussion protocol with QB Cam Newton during the NFC Wild Card game against the New Orleans Saints Sunday, Jan. 7. Newton was poked in the eye and also suffered a knee injury after taking a hit to the head from DT David Onyemata. A league source said the injured knee was a contributing factor to Newton staggering to the ground and having difficulty maintaining his balance. He was taken to the team's blue medical tent on the sidelines for evaluation but was not sent to the locker room, as the league's new rules require.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
No matter what happens with this investigation, the league needs to police team behavior on concussion protocol more closely. The Tom Savage incident alone caused concern that some teams still aren't being circumspect about looking after player safety following possible head injuries.

PIT - Todd Haley could leave Pittsburgh

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport
Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley, who is a free agent at the end of the season, might not return to the team next year due to a souring relationship with QB Ben Roethlisberger, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. As a result, quarterbacks coach Randy Fichtner has moved from the booth to the sidelines to act as a conduit between the two. If Haley does not come back, Fichtner is a potential candidate to become the next offensive coordinator.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Haley has done a good job maximizing the Steelers passing game after the rest of the league seemed to sour on him and he would probably be a welcome upgrade at offensive coordinator for more than one team.

    Tuesday Update

TEN - Mike Mularkey leaves Titans

    Source: ESPN.com - Field Yates

Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Mularkey mutually agreed to part ways with the Titans Monday, Jan. 15, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Things change pretty quickly around here. Mularkey's job was safe when the Titans beat the Chiefs in the Wild Card Round and there were talks about getting him an extension. That fell apart and now Mularkey finds himself looking for work (reports indicate he could be the Browns OC). The Titans may get their wish of getting Patriots OC Josh McDaniels after all.

PIT - QB Ben Roethlisberger returning

Source: Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - Kevin Gorman

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger indicated that he will return for another season in 2018. 'So I look forward to next year with these guys,' Roethlisberger said Sunday, Jan. 14.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Had the Steelers made it to and won the Super Bowl, then perhaps Roethlisberger would've called it a career. He's danced around the subject before, but after the disappointing loss to the Jaguars Roethlisberger must feel like he's still got more to give.

NYG - New York expected to hire Pat Shurmur

Source: CBSSports.com - Jason La Canfora

The New York Giants are expected to hire Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur as their next head coach, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Shurmur has done a great job running the Vikings offense this year, especially as they've gone through changes at the QB position. Reports have often speculated that wherever Shurmur lands, QB Case Keenum would follow. That might not happen if Shurmur winds up with the Giants as they're expected to keep Eli Manning for one more season (for now) and perhaps select a QB with a premium pick in the 2018 NFL draft.

PIT - WR Martavis Bryant wants to stay

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant said he wants to return to the Steelers next season and will be ready for offseason workouts.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bryant has had an...interesting...career with the Steelers so far. In addition to missing the 2016 season due to suspension, Bryant has had some verbal jabs with both QB Ben Roethlisberger and WR JuJu Smith-Schuster. A fourth-round pick in 2014, Bryant was scheduled to be a free agent in 2018 but his contract tolled due to the suspension. The Steelers have him under contract for one more year at the low, low price of $705,000 (in NFL terms of course!)

LAC - RB Melvin Gordon's option should be picked up

    Source: ESPN.com - Eric D. Williams

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon's fifth-year option likely will be exercised this offseason, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Eric D. Williams.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

When healthy, Gordon is proven as a dangerous runner with the ability to take it to the house anytime (and from anywhere) he touches the ball. Their 2015 first-round pick finally played a full 16-game season in 2017, and Gordon had the first 1,000-yard rushing season of his pro career. We'd be shocked if Gordon wasn't retained with the fifth-year option. That would give the Chargers more time to see if he could agree to a long-term deal.

JAX - WR Allen Robinson making progress

    Source: The Florida Times-Union - Ryan O'Halloran

Jacksonville Jaguars impending free-agent WR Allen Robinson (knee) said he believes he will be able to pass a physical when free agency begins. He suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in Week 1.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Robinson won't be 100 percent healthy when free agency opens in March, but this injury should not set back his market. It's not that long ago that Robinson snared 80 passes for 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns. Robinson should have a healthy market for teams looking for an upgrade at the WR position.

BUF - WR Kelvin Benjamin to have surgery

    Source: BuffaloBills.com - John Murphy

Buffalo Bills WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) said he will undergo knee surgery at some point this offseason.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for Benjamin and the Bills here. For most of his time with the Bills this year, Benjamin was basically playing on one leg. Bills head coach Sean McDermott said, "We know what Kelvin Benjamin is capable of when he's healthy. He showed his leadership while playing injured and we're excited to get him healthy this offseason."

NE - RB Rex Burkhead due back next week

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport
New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (knee) is expected to play in the AFC Championship game Sunday, Jan. 21, against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The initial plan was to have him ready for the Divisional Round. Instead, Burkhead wasn't quite ready to play against the Titans so the team shut him down. We'll see if he can practice fully at some point before the AFC Championship Game against the Jaguars.

    Wednesday Update

JAX - RB Leonard Fournette OK after minor accident

Source: USA TODAY Sports - A.J. Perez

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette was involved in a minor car accident Tuesday, Jan. 16, but escaped without suffering a serious injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for the Jaguars here. There was some concern initially after the report broke that Fournette was in a car accident. It sounds like he should be able to practice fully later in the week.

PIT - Le'Veon Bell wants to remain in Pittsburgh

    Source: ESPN.com - Katherine Terrell

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell said he 'of course' would want to remain in Pittsburgh next season and that he would 'never want to leave this city,' but 'circumstances and things like that' would be the reason if he doesn't continue his tenure with the Steelers in 2018.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Last week, Bell was talking about retiring if he's slapped with the franchise tag again...and now that the Steelers are out of the playoffs he's talking about a return. If the Steelers franchise Bell again, the tag would cost around $14.5 million for the 2018 season.

SEA - Seattle coaching changes official

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

The Seattle Seahawks officially hired offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr. and offensive line coach Mike Solari Tuesday, Jan. 16. Defensive coordinator Kris Richard and linebackers coach Micheal Barrow were officially fired.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Seahawks have cleaned house under head coach Pete Carroll. The Schottenheimer hiring is the most interesting from a fantasy perspective. We'll see if their new OC can create a ground game that was non-existent in 2017. That, plus working with QB Russell Wilson to protect him better.

KC - TE Travis Kelce won't play in Pro Bowl

    Source: TitansOnline.com - Jim Wyatt

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce (concussion) will not participate in the Pro Bowl due to a concussion he suffered in the playoffs. Tennessee Titans TE Delanie Walker has been named as Kelce's replacement.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kelce suffered two concussions during the 2017 season, one in the regular season and one in the playoffs. He needs to take it easy and get back in action when the Chiefs get to work at OTAs later in the spring.

PHI - QB Nick Foles has been worse at home

    Source: USA TODAY Fantasy Sports

Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles has thrown just one touchdown compared to two interceptions in five games played in Philadelphia this season. Meanwhile, he has thrown four touchdowns and zero interceptions in two road contests. The Eagles face the Minnesota Vikings in Philadelphia in the NFC Championship this weekend.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Foles will need a solid game to beat the Vikings in the NFC Championship Game. He took some time to get going in the Divisional Round, and Foles didn't have a great box score after the game. He didn't need to and the Eagles moved on. Those numbers and Foles' production will have to be better if they want to advance to the Super Bowl.

NO - QB Drew Brees will not test market

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Triplett

New Orleans Saints impending free-agent QB Drew Brees said he does not plan to test the free-agent market. 'I'll be [in New Orleans] as long as they'll have me, hopefully,' Brees said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This has been the thinking for quite some time. He's a free agent, but it would be crazy for the Saints to let him hit the open market. They should sign Brees in the period where teams can sign their own free agents about a week before the chaos known as free agency begins.

NO - TE Coby Fleener a cut candidate

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Triplett

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener is set to count $8 million against the cap with a $6.3 million salary in 2018, making it highly unlikely he will stay with the team unless he agrees to a pay cut on the five-year, $36 million contract he signed in 2016.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
His contract and his lack of production means that Fleener is gone. If (when?) the Saints choose to release him, they would still be charged $4.8 million in dead money.

TB - RB Doug Martin 'wasn't ever the same' in 2017

Source: Tampa Bay Times - Rick Stroud

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Doug Martin failed to rush for even 500 yards for the fourth time in five years. General manager Jason Licht attributed Martin's most recent disappointing season to his season-opening suspension and the idea he wasn't able to reach the form he showed in the preseason after returning from his three-game absence.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Martin is set to count $6.75 million against the cap in 2018, but with zero remaining in dead money we won't see him back with the team. Entering free agency with so many question marks, we can't see a ton of teams lined up for the veteran back. The fact that it's a very strong draft class at running back this year doesn't bode well for Martin either.

WAS - RB Chris Thompson feeling good

    Source: Redskins.com - Jake Kring-Schreifels

Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson (leg) said he's 'feeling good' while rehabbing from a fractured fibula that he sustained back in November in a game against the New Orleans Saints.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Thompson was a great weapon for Washington when he was healthy, and the offense wasn't the same without him after he was hurt. Lord only knows who the quarterback will be next season, but Thompson will give the team a dangerous weapon out of the backfield when fully healthy. He's expected to be ready for training camp.

TEN - RB DeMarco Murray remains confident

    Source: TitansOnline.com - Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans RB DeMarco Murray said he believes he is 'definitely' still a top-end feature back. 'I am very confident in myself and I am excited,' he said. 'I am excited about the future, and my future. I know what kind of player I am.' He added that he 'probably' would have been able to return from injury in the next game had the Titans not lost their Divisional Round playoff affair Saturday, Jan. 13, against the New England Patriots. Murray also mentioned that he envisioned returning to the team next season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Murray is under contract for 2018 and 2019, but we don't see him staying with the Titans at his current price. He's set to count $6.5 million against the cap in 2018, but there's nothing remaining in dead money on his deal. That means he's likely cut. Perhaps the Titans would bring him back at a cheaper price, but either way they're moving forward with Derrick Henry as their top running back.

    Thursday Update

NE - QB Tom Brady undergoes X-rays

Source: Boston Herald - Karen Guregian

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (hand) underwent X-rays on his injured hand Wednesday, Jan. 17, but they did not show any structural damage, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That he had to have X-rays means that the injury was not just a mere nick or bruise. The Jaguars are not the defense you want to be facing with a throwing hand that is less than 100%.

NYJ - Todd Haley may be OC candidate for Jets

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley is expected to be a candidate for the New York Jets vacant offensive coordinator position.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Haley and head coach Todd Bowles spent time together on the Cowboys and Jets coaching staffs in the past and Haley has been successful when he's not getting into personality conflicts. Haley should find a job soon even if the Jets pass on him.

NE - RB Rex Burkhead limited Wednesday

    Source: Patriots.com

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (knee) was a limited participant in practice Wednesday, Jan. 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Burkhead appeared close to a return last week despite being clearly limited by his knee injury in practice last week. The team has been using Dion Lewis on 20+ touches a game since Burkhead went down, which is not ideal, but workable since Lewis has been used sparingly at times earlier in the season.

NE - WR Malcolm Mitchell won't be activated

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell (knee) will not be activated from the Reserve/Injured list, according to a source. He will not be eligible to play again until next season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mitchell's knee never responded well enough to have an impact this year after a promising rookie campaign. The Patriots passing attack can support multiple fantasy relevant receivers, so Mitchell should still be stashed in all but the most shallow dynasty leagues.

TB - RB Doug Martin not returning?

Source: Tampa Bay Times - Rick Stroud

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Doug Martin has 'no chance' of being on Tampa Bay's roster next season, in the opinion of the Tampa Bay Times' Rick Stroud.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Martin probably shouldn't have been on the roster this year. The team paid him over five million non-guaranteed dollars despite being unavailable for the first three games. Even with the endorsement of the team, he was the same unexciting back that he had been recently, and Martin was outperformed by Peyton Barber down the stretch. Martin will have to fight to be a backup next year.

MIA - WR Jarvis Landry seeking Davante Adams money

Source: The Miami Herald - Barry Jackson

Miami Dolphins impending free-agent WR Jarvis Landry is believed to be seeking a contract similar to the one Green Bay Packers WR Davante Adams received. Adams signed a four-year, $58 million deal with $32 million guaranteed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Landry has outproduced Adams over the duration of their rookie contracts, so this shouldn't be difficult, as long as a team considers a shorter-range slot receiver valuable enough to pay like a #1. The Dolphins could franchise him, but they don't seem to value him enough to do that, even if it could allow them to recoup more in a trade than they would get as a compensatory pick.

ARI - Mike Munchak bows out of Cards race

    Source: ESPN - Chris Mortensen

Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line coach Mike Munchak has declined a second interview with the Arizona Cardinals for their head coach vacancy.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This news is not easy to interpret, as Munchak doesn't sound like the leading candidate to replace Todd Haley as offensive coordinator, although he could have a larger role in the Steelers coaching staff in a different way. It could also speak to the unattractiveness of the Cardinals head coaching job, but then it seems odd that Munchak would even allow a first interview.

    Friday Update

NE - QB Tom Brady on field but does not officially practice

Source: Boston Herald - Jeff Howe

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (hand) was present for the stretching portion of practice Thursday, Jan. 18, after injuring his hand in practice Wednesday, Jan. 17. But he was officially listed as not practicing. According to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald, the swelling in Brady's hand doesn't appear to have worsened as he was on the field stretching instead of receiving treatment. The extent of Brady's practice participation was not disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is worth watching, and he has a brutal matchup. That said, we have to think Brady will be out there. He'll put up points and while the production may not be what he normally does, who are you trusting over him? Nick Foles against a tough Minnesota defense? Blake Bortles? Case Keenum? It's not a great matchup and the injury is a worry but he's the most reliable guy here. The team's last practice of the week is Friday and the team will have a walk through Saturday. Watch to see what he's able to do Friday.

MIN - WR Adam Thielen upgraded to limited

    Source: Vikings.com

Minnesota Vikings WR Adam Thielen (back) was a limited practice participant Thursday, Jan. 18, after missing practice Wednesday, Jan. 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If the Vikings are going to win this game, Thielen is one of the guys they have to have do well. We think he and Stefon Diggs match up well with the Eagles secondary, and predict them to have a very good weekend. Start them in your DFS leagues.

JAX - Limited practice for RB Leonard Fournette

    Source: Jaguars.com

Updating a previous report, Jacksonville Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette (ankle) was limited during practice Thursday, Jan. 18.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fournette will play and get a lot of carries as the Jaguars try to keep the game out of Blake Bortles' hands. He should be one of the better running back starts this week even if the Patriots are looking for him. He hasn't been as productive per carry as we had hoped, but he should have good overall totals.

    Source: Patriots.com

New England Patriots RB Mike Gillislee (knee) was limited during practice Thursday, Jan. 18.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Even if he plays, don't waste your time with Gillislee. He won't be a factor, much less a reliable one.

NE - RB Rex Burkhead a limited participant

    Source: Patriots.com

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (knee) was limited during practice Thursday, Jan. 18.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Burkhead hasn't been much of a factor this year but has had his moments, such as in Week 13 against the Bills when he totaled 103 combined yards and a pair of touchdowns. we think he should be a factor this week against Jacksonville as the Patriots use as many different weapons as they can and free things up for the pass game with the run. We'd still rather start Dion Lewis, but Burkhead is a solid start this week.

MIN - Mike Zimmer unsure about No. 2 QB

    Source: ESPN.com - Kevin Seifert

Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer said he is not sure if QB Sam Bradford or QB Teddy Bridgewater will serve as the backup quarterback in the NFC Championship game. Zimmer said he has considered having three quarterbacks active because of the importance of the game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is going to be a fascinating offseason for the Vikings at quarterback. However if Case Keenum can't get it done this weekend, we don't know the other two likely rusty quarterbacks will either.

ATL - No surgery for RB Devonta Freeman

    Source: ESPN.com - Vaughn McClure

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman (knee) will not need surgery to repair his torn posterior cruciate ligament and sprained medial collateral ligament, according to head coach Dan Quinn.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Freeman backslid just like the rest of the Falcons offense, though injury played a factor in him missing 1,000 yards. Hopefully he can rehab enough to not risk further injury when 2018 starts up.

CHI - Calvin Ridley makes sense for Bears

    Source: ESPNChicago.com - Jeff Dickerson

Alabama WR Calvin Ridley was given to the Chicago Bears in the first 2018 mock draft by ESPN NFL draft analyst Mel Kiper. Ridley is widely considered the top wide receiver available in the 2018 draft class.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bears are desperate for receiving help. Kevin White is never healthy and Alshon Jeffery is long gone. It's too early to take mocks seriously - well, it's always too early for that - but this makes a lot of sense.

PHI - RB Jay Ajayi driven to avenge Miami decision

Source: Palm Beach Post - Hal Habib

Philadelphia Eagles RB Jay Ajayi said that he's 'driven' to avenge the Miami Dolphins' decision to trade him earlier in the season and that he's trying to prove them wrong for shipping him out in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick. He added, 'I don't think it will be redemption until I win the Super Bowl. If we can get that done, then I'll have my redemption.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We aren't shocked he's motivated and while we understood his off-field attitude needed work, we still think the Dolphins pulled the rip cord too soon. Frankly, nobody seems to know what way is up in Miami. Ajayi and the Eagles face a tough task in the form of a good Minnesota defense this week. The top of the running backs are tight this week, but Ajayi could be decent value for his production - which should be solid - in DFS.

MIA - No hometown discount for WR Jarvis Landry

Source: Palm Beach Post - Joe Schad
Updating a previous report, Miami Dolphins WR Jarvis Landry does not plan on taking any sort of hometown discount, according to his agent, Damarius Bilbo. 'Absolutely not,' said Bilbo when asked about the issue. 'This may be Jarvis' first and last time to set himself up and his family up. He needs to strike and strike while the iron is hot.' Bilbo also mentioned that he is waiting on the Dolphins to respond to his contract proposal.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Sounds like Bilbo's been messing around with the One Ring to Rule them all and it's turning him and Landry to the Dark Side. Wait, that's mixing movies. Anyway, Landry could make bank elsewhere and it's hard to know which way Miami is going right now. IS there a plan? We can't see it and if Landry thinks the same, departing might be best for him and his bank account.

    Saturday Update

NE - Questionable tag for QB Tom Brady

    Source: Patriots.com

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (hand) was limited during practice Friday, Jan. 19, and is listed as questionable for the AFC Championship game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brady needed four stiches in his knuckle after hitting his hand on a teammate's helmet during practice on Wednesday. He's expected to play against the Jaguars, and we'll see if this injury negatively impacts his ability to throw the football.

NYJ - WR Robby Anderson arrested

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Scott Gleeson

New York Jets WR Robby Anderson was arrested in Florida Friday, Jan. 19, and is facing nine charges including reckless driving, eluding police, resisting arrest and harm to a public servant or family member.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The police report states that Anderson was speeding, clocked at 105 mph in a 45 mph zone. He eluded police but eventually pulled over. In the back of the police car, Anderson allegedly threatened the arresting officer's family. This isn't the first time Anderson has had a run in with the law, as last year he was arrested at a music festival where he was charged with resisting arrest and obstructing justice.

JAX - RB Leonard Fournette on track to play

    Source: Jaguars.com

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette (ankle) were limited during practice Friday, Jan. 19, and is not on the injury report for the AFC Championship game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fournette is the centerpiece of the Jaguars offense, and he'll need a big day for the team to advance to the Super Bowl. The Patriots will do whatever they can to take Fournette away from the Jaguars offense and dare QB Blake Bortles to beat them.

NE - RB Mike Gillislee questionable

    Source: Patriots.com

New England Patriots RB Mike Gillislee (knee) was limited during practice Friday, Jan. 19, and is listed as questionable for the AFC Championship game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gillislee missed the Divisional Round due to this knee injury, and his status for Sunday is unclear. The Patriots have a fine group of RBs in place if Gillislee has to miss another game.

NE - RB Rex Burkhead listed as questionable

    Source: Patriots.com

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (knee) was limited during practice Friday, Jan. 19, and is listed as questionable for the AFC Championship game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Burkhead was on track to play in the Divisional Round, but he missed the game against the Titans as he needed more time to heal. His status for Sunday's game is up in the air. He'd serve as a receiving back and goal-line back for the Patriots if he's able to play against the tough Jaguars defense.

PIT - WR Eli Rogers suffered torn ACL

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Gerry Dulac

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Eli Rogers (knee) suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament during the Divisional Round playoff game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bad news for Rogers who is set to be a restricted free agent this year. The Steelers should bring him back, but this injury will force him to miss the offseason program. His recovery should also take him into the regular season, and Rogers should be a candidate for the PUP list at the beginning of training camp. We'll see them search for a no4 WR behind Antonio Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Martavis Bryant.

MIN - WR Adam Thielen listed as questionable

    Source: Vikings.com

Updating a previous report, Minnesota Vikings WR Adam Thielen (back) was limited during practice Friday, Jan. 19, and is listed as questionable for the NFC Championship game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Thielen has been working through this back injury all week. Reports indicate that he'll be out there and get his normal workload of snaps against the Eagles in the NFC Championship Game.

ARI - Todd Haley interested in Cards OC

Source: 98.7 Arizona - Mike Jurecki

Former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley is interested in the Arizona Cardinals' offensive coordinator spot.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Haley was with the team in 2007-2008, working as the Cardinals OC and helping them get to the Super Bowl. The Cardinals don't have a head coach, so anyone interested in being the OC is going to have to wait.

CIN - RB Jeremy Hill likely gone

Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Paul Dehner Jr. and Jim Owczarski

Cincinnati Bengals RB Jeremy Hill is likely to leave via free agency, in the opinion of beat writers Jim Owczarski and Paul Dehner Jr.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hill underwent ankle surgery last November, ending his 2017 season. He'll be healthy for the offseason as he searches for a new team. Hill is not a feature back, but he could work as a power back for a team in need of help near the goal line.

PIT - Le'Veon Bell was late for walkthrough

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Ed Bouchette

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell showed up five minutes before the walkthrough ended Saturday, Jan. 13, before the Steelers were beaten by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He and a coach were also late to report to the stadium before the game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bell had previously threatened to retire if the Steelers slap the franchise tag on him again. If they do that, Bell might hold out up to the regular season like he did in 2017. The franchise tag for Bell would cost around $14.5 million for the 2018 season.

BUF - WR Zay Jones has successful surgery

    Source: buffalonews.com

Buffalo Bills WR Zay Jones (shoulder) underwent successful surgery to repair a torn labrum on Tuesday, Jan. 16. According to a source, Jones' injury wasn't revealed until last week during a standard season-ending MRI examination.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones, the FBS all-time leading receiver, had a rough rookie season highlighted by too many drops. Perhaps this injury kept him from playing like most expected coming out of East Carolina.

    Sunday Update

NE - QB Tom Brady sharp Friday

    Source: NFL.com - Ian Rapoport

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (hand) threw the ball 'incredibly well' during practice Friday, Jan. 19, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for the Patriots here. Everyone is watching Brady's practice report closely as these stitches in his throwing hand are a concern. Reports indicate that he will play against the Jaguars on Sunday in the AFC Championship Game. How well he plays will show how significant (or insignificant) this injury was.

TEN - WR Taywan Taylor may receive bigger role

    Source: TitansOnline.com - Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans WR Taywan Taylor is expected to be more involved in the passing game in 2018, in the opinion of TitansOnline.com's Jim Wyatt.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We could see that happening for a couple of different reasons. First, Taylor is an ascending talent with the quickness to gain separation against tight coverage. Second, the Titans could move on from guys like 2018 unrestricted free agent WR Eric Decker which would create a larger opportunity for Taylor.

PIT - WR Eli Rogers may not be ready for Week 1

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Eli Rogers (knee) may not be ready for the start of the 2018 regular season because he underwent surgery earlier this week to repair his torn anterior cruciate ligament. He is a restricted free agent this offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

ACL injuries usually take about 9-12 months to fully recover from. Rogers flashed in 2017 as the no4 receiver for the Steelers. They are likely to be without him for OTAs and into training camp. If he heals quickly, there's a chance Rogers could avoid the PUP list to begin the season.

NYG - WR Odell Beckham Jr. poised to shine?

Source: New York Daily News - Pat Leonard

New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. will thrive if Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur becomes the next head coach of the Giants as expected, according to WR Stefon Diggs, 'because Pat knows how to get people the ball.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Beckham will thrive no matter who the Giants hire. We understand the logic here, but Beckham is a superstar and any coach that gets hired will know there's a mandate to get him the ball early and often.

ATL - RB Tevin Coleman staying in Atlanta?

    Source: ESPN.com - Vaughn McClure

Atlanta Falcons RB Tevin Coleman could remain a part of the backfield beyond 2018, according to general manager Thomas Dimitroff.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A third-round pick in 2015, Coleman is entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2018. We can't see a way that the Falcons afford both Coleman and Devonta Freeman. Coleman may want a chance to move on and prove that he can be a featured back with another team in 2019.

CIN - TE Tyler Eifert likely finished in Cincy

Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Paul Dehner Jr. and Jim Owczarski

Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and Paul Dehner Jr. of the Cincinnati Enquirer gives Eifert a 10 percent chance of re-signing with the Bengals.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Eifert has the potential to be great when healthy, but he's struggled to stay healthy and has never played a full 16-game season. Coming off his second back surgery in two years, the market is likely to be cool for Eifert's services.
