NFL Player News - Week of 5/9/16

DAL - WR Dez Bryant's recovery on track

Source: Fort Worth Star-Telegram - Drew Davison

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (foot) played catch on the side during rookie minicamp Saturday, May 7, and head coach Jason Garrett said he continues to do well with his rehab.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

So far so good here. We currently see Bryant as our #5 WR in the Footballguys Staff Redraft Rankings.

NYJ - OLB Calvin Pace, CB Antonio Cromartie could return

Source: Newsday - Kimberley A. Martin

New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles has not ruled out the possibility of the team re-signing free-agent LB Calvin Pace and CB Antonio Cromartie at some point.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cromartie was released in February, and there's been no buzz about him connecting with another team. The Jets are more likely to bring Cromartie back to give them veteran depth in the secondary. They could also bring Pace back, but the Jets picked Darron Lee (Ohio State, 1st round) and Jordan Jenkins (Georgia, 3rd round) with premium picks in the 2016 NFL draft.

LA - Coach impressed with Jared Goff

    Source: StLouisRams.com - Myles Simmons

Los Angeles Rams OB Jared Goff has been performing well during the rookie minicamp, according to head coach Jeff Fisher. 'He's doing a great job picking up our offense,' Fisher said. 'We've given him a lot more information than we did at the private workout and then that we did here at our meeting, and he's handled it without any problem. And that's the impressive thing. I passed him last night walking to the room and he was leaving the meeting room at 10 o'clock. He's that kind of guy. He'll spend the time. It's important to him.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fisher should be impressed with Goff. The first-overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft has the upside to be a franchise quarterback. Goff joins a team with a strong rushing attack and a stifling defense. That will greatly benefit the rookie as we're expecting him to start from Week 1.

CAR - WR Corey Brown had offseason surgery

Source: Charlotte Observer - Joseph Person

Carolina Panthers WR Corey Brown (shoulder) underwent shoulder surgery this offseason, according to LB Luke Kuechly.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Last November, Brown missed a couple of games with a shoulder injury so it's no surprise he would get some sort of surgery this offseason. We'll see Brown man the slot for the Panthers with Kelvin Benjamin returning to the lineup on the outside.

WAS - Josh Doctson to start eventually?

    Source: RealRedskins.com - Rich Tandler

Washington Redskins WR Josh Doctson could overtake either WRs Pierre Garcon or DeSean Jackson in the starting lineup at some point in 2016, in the opinion of Rich Tandler of realredskins.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We like Doctson, but we're not so sure that he's going to start on the outside in place of Garcon or Jackson. Doctson is not a speed receiver who can stretch the field like the veteran duo already in place. Instead, the rookie from TCU will likely be asked to work the slot as a rookie. He's fearless over the middle and a good route-runner, so playing slot WR for Washington might be his best fit.

WAS - Big workload for RB Matt Jones?

    Source: RealRedskins.com - Rich Tandler

Washington Redskins RB Matt Jones could see 15 to 20 carries per game this season, in the opinion of CSNWashington's Rich Tandler.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones has a good chance of reaching that workload this year at the beginning of the season. Last year in Week 2, Jones had a monster game against the Rams with 123 rushing yards and two touchdowns. He failed to match that level of production the rest of the year, but it shows the type of potential that Jones has. If healthy, Jones should be the team's lead back. We will be watching to see if late-round pick Keith Marshall (Georgia, 2016) will be able to work his way up the depth chart.

    Tuesday Update

PHI - QB Sam Bradford reporting Monday

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford informed team personnel he'll report to offseason workouts Monday, May 9.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
So much for demanding a trade. Apparently, Sam Bradford realized he was in fact Sam Bradford over the last week or so. It sounds like the team is ready to see if he can win the job and give first-round pick Carson Wentz some breathing room and time to develop. But it's still very early. Stay tuned.

DAL - WR Dez Bryant making good progress
    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer
Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (foot) is making good progress in his recovery from foot surgery and has not suffered any setbacks, according to head coach Jason Garrett.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
More good news about Bryant's recovery here. Garrett is hopeful that Bryant can partially participate in offseason workouts. We think the team wisely takes it easy on him so that he'll be at or near full strength for training camp.

MIA - QB Ryan Tannehill receives Manning tutelage
Source: The Miami Herald - Barry Jackson
Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill has received instruction from retired QB Peyton Manning this spring. 'It was really cool just to be able to sit and pick his brain about things he's done in this offense and football things in general: snap counts, things you like, the way you want guys to run routes, little details about the game,' Tannehill said. 'We really just got to talk the game, which is something we both love.'
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Watch out for Tannehill this year. New head coach Adam Gase has worked wonders with QBs like Manning (Broncos) and Jay Cutler (Bears) as an offensive coordinator. Gase got the best out of Manning in 2013 when the future Hall of Fame QB had 55 passing touchdowns and 5,477 passing yards. Tannehill won't post Star Wars numbers like that, but we think he's in for a career-best season in 2016 under Gase's tutelage.

HOU - No extension imminent for WR DeAndre Hopkins
Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson
Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins and the Texans aren't close on a contract extension after the Texans exercised Hopkins' fifth-year option worth $7.915 million, according to a source. He's entering the fourth year of a $7.637 million rookie contract that includes a $3.926 million signing bonus and $6.181 million guaranteed. Hopkins is confident both sides will work something out.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Texans have Hopkins under contract through the 2017 season. We may not see any movement on a new deal in a year. However, he's most certainly a player who is in the long-term plan for the Texans. That may prompt them to pay him a contract around what Dez Bryant (Cowboys) and Demaryius Thomas (Broncos) received last year.

DET - Detroit not expecting WR Calvin Johnson back
Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett
Retired WR Calvin Johnson is not expected to return to the Detroit Lions and play in 2016, according to general manager Bob Quinn.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
That's the best move for the Lions. Johnson is gone, and we'll likely never see Megatron in an NFL uniform ever again. The conversations Quinn had with Johnson before his retirement was announced lead the executive to feel the superstar WR is never coming back.

TEN - Derrick Henry signs rookie deal
    Source: ESPN.com - Paul Kuharsky
Tennessee Titans RB Derrick Henry, a second-round selection, signed his rookie deal Monday, May 9. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Henry adds to the Titans "exotic smashmouth" offense they want. He's a big back who is swift and powerful when he's able to build a head of steam. Demarco Murray is the team's starter, but they should find ways to get Henry on the field as a rookie. The two-down thumper can soften up a defense or close out games if you have a lead.

WAS - Josh Doctson signs rookie deal
    Source: Redskins.com - Stephen Czarda
Washington Redskins WR Josh Doctson signed his rookie contract Monday, May 9.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Doctson isn't afraid to run routes over the middle, and he's got the mindset of a no.1 WR after getting targeted almost 37 percent of the time last year at TCU. In 2016, we should see Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson start on the outside with Doctson working inside at slot.

CIN - Tyler Boyd working to learn plays
    Source: ESPN.com - Coley Harvey
Cincinnati Bengals WR Tyler Boyd said he is working to memorize the playbook as quickly as possible, and he said he already knows most of the terminology because of the similarities with his college offense.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Losing Marvin Jones (Lions) and Mohammed Sanu (Falcons) in free agency led the Bengals to find Boyd in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft. Boyd knows how to fight for the ball, and he's got the body control to make difficult catches seem routine. He'll immediately compete for the starting job opposite A.J. Green in 2016. We'll see if Boyd can impress and win that spot during training camp.

IND - Everett Golson tries out with Indy
Source: The Associated Press - Michael Marot
Free-agent QB Everett Golson, QB Blake Frohnhapfel and QB Ammon Olsen were invited to try out for the Indianapolis Colts during rookie minicamp.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Golson is an athletic QB who bounced around during his college football career. We like Frohnhapfel more as he's accurate and makes decisions quickly with his arm. Any of these three guys are merely camp arms, but perhaps one could make his way to the team's practice squad as a developmental player.

SD - RB Melvin Gordon ahead of schedule
Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken
San Diego Chargers RB Melvin Gordon (knee) said he is ahead of schedule and will be ready for training camp. Gordon is recovering from surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Chargers have made multiple moves to make Gordon the centerpiece of their offense. They've continued to improve the offensive line, and that should greatly help Gordon find running room in 2016. We feel Gordon needs to stop checking the box score to see what Rams RB Todd Gurley is doing. If he just plays within his game, Gordon can be an effective (and dangerous) starter for the Chargers.

CHI - Rookies sign their deals
    Source: ESPNChicago.com - Jeff Dickerson
Chicago Bears OG Cody Whitehair and RB Jordan Howard were the two most notable Bears to sign their four-year rookie contracts Monday, May 9. Rookies S Deon Bush, CB Deiondre' Hall, S DeAndre Houston-Carson and WR Daniel Braverman also signed. Financial terms were undisclosed.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Whitehair was our favorite guard in this draft class. With Vise-Grip for hands, he should be able to help blast open holes for the ground game. Howard may have been the most instinctive runner in the 2016 NFL draft...yes, perhaps even better than Ezekiel Elliot (Cowboys). Now, he lacks the all-purpose game and playmaking ability of Elliot but we will be watching Howard's development with great interest.

NE - WR Nate Washington could be cut

    Source: ESPNBoston.com - Mike Reiss

New England Patriots WR Nate Washington is not a lock for the final roster, in the opinion of ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss. Reiss indicated that only WRs Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan, Danny Amendola and Malcolm Mitchell are locks for the 53-man roster.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The addition of Mitchell puts Washington in a bad spot. He's been a solid veteran for years, but the Patriots might decide to go in a different direction. More than a few teams would be interested in Washington on the open market as he's a savvy veteran who could still catch 40 passes for you.

CIN - DT Dominique Easley working out

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Updating a previous report, free-agent DT Dominique Easley (Patriots) is working out for the Cincinnati Bengals Monday, May 9, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Easley can be a productive player if healthy. There were some rumblings about him being an issue in the locker room with the Patriots, but the Bengals are a team who normally overlooks personality issues. The Falcons also have interest in the talented D-tackle.

    Wednesday Update

DAL - QB Tony Romo ready to go

Source: The Dallas Morning News - Brandon George

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (clavicle) has recovered ahead of the eight weeks at the back end of his recovery timetable, and he's expected to be a full participant in offseason practices later this month. 'He's looking good,' quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson said. 'We had two practices where we've been out here on the field with the guys and he's done everything. He's throwing, he's got good velocity on all of his throws, great movement in his legs. He looks like he's re-energized because he hadn't played, you know, missed the majority of the season. So he's real energized and anxious to get going.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Cowboys go as Romo goes. If he's healthy, the Cowboys can win a lot of games and make a deep push into the postseason. However, Romo has struggled to stay healthy for years and the team falls apart without him on the field. We'll see if a revamped rushing attack featuring first-round pick Ezekiel Elliott can help keep Romo fresh as the season goes along.

NYJ - No urgency with QB Ryan Fitzpatrick

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

Free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick's (Jets) status remains in limbo with the New York Jets. Owner Woody Johnson said there's no urgency to re-sign Fitzpatrick at this point with training camp still two months away.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team is just staying patient right now. Fitzpatrick already knows the Chan Gailey system, so he doesn't need to be present for installation this offseason. Things seem distant between the two sides now, but that could change quickly as training camp gets closer.

NYG - Eli Manning impressed with rookie WR

Source: New York Post - Paul Schwartz

New York Giants QB Eli Manning had nothing but good things to say about rookie WR Sterling Shepard after the two worked together Monday, May 9. 'He's a guy who is shifty and athletic,' Manning said. 'It's tough to say from six routes on air. But I hope he is a young Victor Cruz.' The Giants hope to have a solid trio of WRs Odell Beckham Jr., Victor Cruz and Shepard on the field together in 2016.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Manning should be impressed with Sterling...one of our favorite WRs from this draft class. Sterling is quick, agile and athletic in the open field. He is savvy as a route-runner and can get open with ease. Sterling can play the slot, but he could win the outside job opposite Beckham Jr. in training camp.

NE - WR Danny Amendola takes big pay cut

Source: The Boston Globe - Ben Volin

Updating previous reports, New England Patriots WR Danny Amendola can earn $1.6 million in 2016, which is a pay cut of $4.4 million from his last contract.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Many expected Amendola to accept a pay cut if he wanted to stay with the team. He's set to earn $6.5 million in 2017, but none of it is guaranteed. That means they'll have a decision to make on him again next offseason.

BUF - Cardale Jones works on footwork

    Source: BuffaloBills.com - Chris Brown

Buffalo Bills QB Cardale Jones has spent a lot of time with quarterbacks coach David Lee working on three- and five-step drops. 'At Ohio State I didn't really have a stance under center because I was never under center,' said Jones. 'I talked to (Lee) after practice and he showed me two things I was doing, which was showing up every once in a while. Those things were dropping my elbow and staggering my feet.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones is far from a finished product as a passer. He's big, has a strong arm and can keep plays alive with his feet. However, he needs to improve his consistency and accuracy from the pocket. That all starts with footwork. Jones is an intriguing prospect we're all over in dynasty leagues.

MIN - Laquon Treadwell fitting in nicely

    Source: ESPN.com - Ben Goessling

Minnesota Vikings WR Laquon Treadwell is expected to step in and become the team's go-to receiver. He is expected to serve in a major role this season, and he was drafted in part because he already excels in some of the routes the team frequently uses.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Just think DeAndre Hopkins when considering the upside of what Treadwell could be. He's not the fastest player, but he knows how to get open and can make difficult catches seem routine. We're excited about how the rookie WR will be able to improve the passing game in 2016.

WAS - Josh Doctson to be red zone threat

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins WR Josh Doctson is expected to be used quite a bit, especially in the red zone. He gives the team something they did not have last season, and that is a receiver with height.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Doctson accounted for about 37 percent of his offense during his final season at TCU. He's going to be a third WR for Washington behind DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon, but Docton can handle a much larger workload.

DEN - Devontae Booker could make impact

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeff Legwold

Denver Broncos RB Devontae Booker (knee) missed the last part of the 2015 season with a knee injury, but the team expects him to be ready by June. He is the three-down back in waiting in Denver, and he has good ability as a receiver and third-down blocker.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Booker is the "in case of emergency break glass" back for the Broncos. We don't see him playing in a RBBC with C.J. Anderson. The Broncos paid Anderson like a lead back this offseason, and he could get the biggest workload of his football career in 2016. However, if Anderson gets banged up again then Booker could take over and do a lot of things that Anderson does (power inside, pass-blocker, good receiver).

SD - RB Melvin Gordon had microfracture surgery

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken

Updating previous reports, San Diego Chargers RB Melvin Gordon (knee) underwent microfracture surgery on his left knee in January, and he was given a recovery timetable of four to six months. Gordon participated in on-field drills Monday, May 9, but admitted he's not yet 100%. 'I'm not where I want to be, but I think I'm ahead of schedule,' Gordon said. 'I'm sprinting pretty well. I'm cutting. No question, I'll be ready for training camp. I'm not even worried about that.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Microfracture surgery is a huge concern, although it's not quite as scary as it used to be. Guys like Travis Kelce (Chiefs) have come back from the procedure and performed well. Watch Gordon's recovery as he comes back from this major surgery, but note that the Chargers do not think he'll miss significant time in training camp.

    OAK - Karl Joseph signs

    Source: NFL.com - Conor Orr

Oakland Raiders rookie SS Karl Joseph signed his four-year rookie deal Monday, May 9. Financial terms were not disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Watch Joseph show up for the Raiders this year. The WVU prospect can roam in coverage, he's not afraid of run support and he can be an intimidating player on defense.

DET - A'Shawn Robinson signs rookie deal

    Source: DetroitLions.com

Detroit Lions DT A'Shawn Robinson, Detroit's second-round pick, signed his four-year rookie deal Tuesday, May 10. Financial terms were not disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Robinson can be an impact player up front on the defensive line. He's huge (6'4" 307 pounds) and has a disruptive punch after the snap. Robinson is quick off the line and can create interior pressure as a pass-rusher. He's a brute who could at least make an impact as a rotational player for the Lions in 2016.

SF - Jarryd Hayne could see a jump

Source: The Mercury News - Daniel Brown

San Francisco 49ers RB Jarryd Hayne is expected to produce more in his second season, according to the team. 'I think you'll see a jump from him,'' said 49ers executive Paraag Marathe, who still oversees the team's football analytics department. 'You look at elite athletes and those guys who have that willpower and desire to succeed and there's something special in them.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hayne bounced from the team's practice squad to the active roster last year and had 17 carries for 52 yards and six catches for 27 yards. He also contributed on special teams, returning eight punts for a total of 76 yards. With Carlos Hyde at the top of the depth chart, Hayne will compete for a reserve spot with guys like Mike Davis, rookie Kelvin Taylor and Shaun Draughn.

PIT - Sean Davis could start immediately

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh SS Sean Davis projects as a strong safety, and the competition is wide open. He might start if he proves he is ready during training camp and the preseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Davis loves to play close to the line of scrimmage and he arrives at the ball-carrier with natural violence. He's bad in coverage and may have to come off the field in obvious passing situations.

OAK - Karl Joseph likely to start

    Source: ESPN.com - Paul Gutierrez

Oakland Raiders SS Karl Joseph (knee) is a hard hitting strong safety with soft hands. As long as he is fully healed from a knee injury which limited him to four games last season, he has the chance to start immediately. Joseph is a 'perfect fit for what we want to accomplish here,' assistant defensive backs coach Rod Woodson said Monday, May 9.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Joseph plays a little bit like a combination of T.J. Ward (Broncos) and Darian Stewart (also, Broncos). The rookie from WVU has no problem playing close to the line of scrimmage and excelling as a run defender. He is also rangy and can make plays in coverage. Some think the Raiders picked Joseph a little too high in the first round, but we like the pick.

    Thursday Update

PIT - Le'Veon Bell Status unknown for OTAs

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell's (knee) status for organized team activities in a few weeks is unknown, but he's expected to be limited if he's cleared. Training camp might be the best gauge used to determine his status as he's six months removed from right knee surgery.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Steelers are going to be wisely cautious with their star running back. As of now, there's no timetable for a full return. Bell might be ready for Week 1 of the regular season, but we'll have to wait and see how his recovery goes the rest of the offseason.

NYJ - Bart Scott Blasts Ryan Fitzpatrick

Source: CBS Sports - Will Brinson

CBS Analyst and former Jets player Bart Scott had stern words for QB Ryan Fitzpatrick:

"At this point everyone pretty much knows who he is. Another 20 teams in the league he would be a backup. And the only teams he would start for have bad quarterback situations. He's a bridge guy, a glue guy," Scott said. "I'm not going to give you $15 -- he wants $15 [million] because [of what Brock] Osweiler [got from the Texans]. [Osweiler] hasn't reached his ceiling yet. But they're paying for his potential, what he might be able to become. It's all downhill right now for Fitz. "They surrounded him by tremendous talent. You can't get your feelings hurt. This is business. Whoever his agent is has to understand this is the market. He's Hoyer. That's who you are. Accept it. You made a lot of money in this league and now you're going to try to play hardball and not have a team in a tremendous situation to really change the trajectory of your career, so people can change what they think about Ryan Fitzpatrick the quarterback?" It's hard to blame Fitzpatrick for wanting to make as much money as he can. On the other hand, Scott has a point in that we pretty much know what we're getting with Fitzpatrick. As Brinson said in the intro, the Jets and Fitzpatrick are playing the world's more boring game of chicken.

    SF - Fast-paced minicamp for 49ers

Source: Sacramento Bee - Matt Barrows

San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly has already made an impression on his new team following minicamp. 'It's quicker, you're up to the line of scrimmage faster,' wide receiver Torrey Smith said. 'I actually like it because I'm usually the last person to jog back to the huddle anyway. Just get lined up, you can catch your break there and you can also catch the defense off guard.' TE Garrett Celek said the simplicity of the offense enables them to play faster. The offensive players said it will take some time to adjust to the new approach, but Celek said once it clicks it will be go, go, go.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is the same kind of thing we saw in Philadelphia with excitement over tempo and practice tweaks. San Francisco fans are hoping the outcome is different.

NE - WR Julian Edelman had surgery

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (foot) recently underwent foot surgery but is still on pace to participate in training camp, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Edelman was recently seen walking around in a large boot, and now we hear about this surgery. It's an interesting note right now, but expect Edelman to be ready for the start of the regular season. However, know that foot injuries can linger and if pushed too hard there can be a setback. Make sure to monitor his injury situation through camp.

IND - Indy won't change QB Andrew Luck

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Wells

Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck missed nine games due to injury last year, but new quarterbacks coach Brian Schottenheimer said they won't limit Luck and try to force him to change his playing style. Luck has taken more than 100 hits since entering the NFL, but he also committed 13 turnovers and completed just 55.3% of his pass attempts in seven games last year.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Colts need to do everything they can to protect Luck. He's arguably the best young QB in the league, and most certainly an elite-level passer. Luck needs time to throw and his amazing upside doesn't need to be cut short by injury. Four of the Colts eight picks in the 2016 NFL draft were offensive linemen. The Colts know what they have in Luck, and we expect them to do a much better job of keeping him upright.

CLE - WR Josh Gordon phased out in Cleveland?

    Source: ESPN.com - Pat McManamon

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon may not have a roster spot to return to if he's reinstated after the team drafted four wide receivers in the 2016 NFL Draft. The new regime in the front office has also said that high-character players were something they stressed in the draft.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Nobody can deny Gordon's talent, but his off-field antics may have cost him his spot with the Browns. The team selected four WRs in the 2016 NFL draft, and there's some real talent added at the position. Even their fifth-round pick, Rashard Higgins (CSU), has the upside to be a quality starter. If Gordon does play in 2016, it might not be for the Browns. Stay tuned.

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (knee) said Tuesday, May 10, that he feels 'great', and he feels he will be ready for training camp. However, it is uncertain if that means he will be a full participant or limited.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Everyone wants to see Cruz salsa-dancing again in the end zone. Hopefully he can stay healthy and return to form in 2016.

Weatherspoon barely saw the field last year for the Cardinals. Now he's back with the Falcons and will compete for a starting job.

BUF - Buffalo to start at least three rookies

    Source: NFL.com - Dan Hanzus

Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley said the team will be starting at least three rookies in 2016. 'At least three,' Whaley replied. 'Shaq Lawson is going to walk in off the bus starting. Reggie Ragland and then Adolphus Washington -- all three of those guys will start right off the bus. And we're excited for some guys from the fourth through sixth rounds that will contribute for us.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'd agree with Whaley about those three starters. The Bills only generated 21 sacks last season, so the defense needed the shot in the arm the draft likely provided. We like what the Bills did in the draft, and one of our favorite sleeper RBs in Jonathan Williams (Arkansas). The Bills snared him in the fifth round, and Williams has the ability to be a quality starter at pro level. Yes, he's currently buried on the depth chart but fantasy owners (especially dynasty owners) need to know his game.

HOU - CB Kevin Johnson feeling stronger

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans CB Kevin Johnson (wrist, foot), returning from wrist and foot surgeries, said Tuesday, May 10, that he is feeling good. 'I'm feeling good, continuing to get healthier, bigger, stronger and faster,' Johnson said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Johnson says he played through a Jones fracture in his foot for eight games as a rookie in 2015. He flashed big-time potential last year, and we're excited to see him healthy and starring on he field for the Texans. With an amazing draft, a new QB in Brock Osweiler and a solid defense the Texans are prepared to make another playoff run in 2016.

Joseph suffered a knee injury back in November, but he didn't miss any games due to the injury. He's a key defender for a strong Texans defense. The 32-year old veteran should be ready for the start of the regular season.

    Friday Update

DAL - No issues for QB Tony Romo

    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (collarbone) has not had any issues physically so far during the Cowboys' offseason program, according to head coach Jason Garrett. Garrett said that Romo has almost completely integrated back into the offseason program, adding that Romo's back is feeling well, his shoulder seems fine, he's moving around well and he's made a lot of progress. Owner Jerry Jones said there's nothing negative about where Romo is in his current state. 'Everything they hoped to accomplish technically from appraisal of surgery has gone well. Everything he's done regarding his strength, everything regarding what he's wanted to do, he's been able to do,' Jones said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Cowboys addressed the quarterback position later in the draft, though they did try to trade back into the first to get Paxton Lynch so we know they aren't ignoring Romo's injury history. Still, Romo has no real competition and it will be a while until Dak Prescott is ready to take over, if he ever is. Romo, if healthy, should be a solid QB1 this season with the weapons he has on offense and what appears to be an great run game in the making, led by rookie Ezekiel Elliot.

NYG - RB Rashad Jennings should remain lead back

Source: New York Daily News - Ralph Vacchiano

New York Giants RB Rashad Jennings is expected to be the workhorse running back and receive the majority of carries in 2016, according to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News. Jennings saw 48.3% of the Giants' carries last season, but Vacchiano expects that to increase this season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The rest of the group behind him is pretty unimpressive and Jennings still brings a lot to the table, so this isn't a shock. That said, if he gets up to speed quickly, rookie Paul Perkins could see a chunk of carries, especially if Jennings and the other backs struggle.

DAL - Stephen Jones optimistic on WR Dez Bryant

Source: The Dallas Morning News - Brandon George

Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (foot, ankle) is still not quite 100 percent recovered from right foot and ankle surgeries in January, and he was limited to nine games in 2015. Executive vice president Stephen Jones sounds optimistic though. "I think one of the tough things about last year for Dez, he plays with such energy, that with the contract dispute, if you will, he wasn't around, which is business, and consequently he probably wasn't in his best shape going into the season and then you start to add the injuries when players aren't in shape and they continued on through training camp and then on into the season and we ended up not having him much last year, so if he can get his rehab done and get himself in top condition, then I think we'll see the same Dez that we saw two years ago."

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Cowboys need Bryant to be 100% to rebound from a disappointing 2015. Bryant should be a WR1 in fantasy if he and Tony Romo are healthy.

HOU - QB Brock Osweiler learning new offense

    Source: HoustonTexans.com - Deepi Sidhu

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler said Wednesday, May 11, that it has been fun learning a new offense and trying to get comfortable in his new surroundings. 'It's fun,' Osweiler said. 'It's hard to judge that progress because we haven't hit the practice field and gone against a defense, but it's like you speak Spanish your whole life and then all of a sudden one day, they tell you to go learn French and do it in front of 70,000 people.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

While not everyone here at Footballguys is a big Osweiler acolyte (Brockolyte?), even the most skeptical of us have been rolling our eyes over the concern about this. Every quarterback in a new system has referred to learning that system in this way. It's far too early to start rending your clothes and tearing out your hair over this. Many of us may not be sold on Osweiler, but this news blurb isn't anything to get worked up about yet.

DEN - RB C.J. Anderson the lead back

Source: The Denver Post - Troy E. Renck

Denver Broncos RB C.J. Anderson will receive the bulk of the carries in 2016 with RB Ronnie Hillman providing a change of pace. RB Devontae Booker will have a chance to play on third downs if he can pick up pass protection.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There has been a misconception about the workload in Denver after the Broncos selected Booker in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL draft. Booker is clearly a three-down-back-in-waiting, but Anderson is their bellcow. He proved last year in the postseason that he could carry a heavy workload, and Anderson received a $5 million bonus back in March as part of his new contract. The language of the NFL is money, and the Broncos have said (with their dollars) that Anderson is clearly the lead back.

    NYJ - Christian Hackenberg financials

Source: New York Daily News - Peter Botte

Updating a previous report, New York Jets QB Christian Hackenberg's four-year rookie contract is worth $4.66 million.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hackenberg will have a chance to win the starting job, but we're not touching him if he does. His shell-shocked attitude behind the offensive line will take time to get rid of, if it ever happens at all. The Jets quarterback situation is shaky, though Geno Smith is a little intriguing given the success the very average Ryan Fitzpatrick had in Chan Gailey's offense and the weapons the Jets have on offense.

CLE - Cody Kessler will practice

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns rookie QB Cody Kessler will still practice at the rookie minicamp even if he doesn’t sign by the start of camp Thursday, May 12, due to the injury protection clause.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kessler is who he is - a guy who won't make a lot of mistakes but who is risk averse to a fault. He's unlikely to be a threat to Robert Griffin III in his rookie year, and we're not sure we expect much of him down the road either. That said, Hue Jackson has made decent quarterbacks look great before, so we have some hope.

NYG - Minimal impact from Paul Perkins?

Source: New York Daily News - Ralph Vacchiano

New York Giants rookie RB Paul Perkins isn't expected to have much of an impact in his rookie season, in the opinion of Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News. Vacchiano anticipates RB Andre Williams to have the first shot at being the short-yardage running back and Jennings' backup, with RB Shane Vereen reprising his pass-catching and third-down role.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Andre Williams has been sub-impressive so far, so we're not holding our breath. In fact, nobody in this backfield should feel good about their job security. There wasn't a 1000 yard back in the group last season either meaning, again, assume nothing. Perkins won't be someone to plug in early, but he's someone who could get opportunity later in the season.

MIN - Laquon Treadwell signs his rookie deal

    Source: Vikings.com

Minnesota Vikings WR Laquon Treadwell signed his four-year rookie contract, including a fifth-year option Thursday, May 12.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Treadwell was the last rookie the Vikings had to sign. He plays faster than his Pro Day time of 4.65 and he's a fierce competitor for jump balls, so we are bullish on him long term. However, he will probably see more work blocking for Adrian Peterson, as offensive coordinator Norv Turner called more rushes than almost any other OC in the league and Treadwell is an excellent blocker. We don't know if the Vikings will throw enough to make Treadwell a viable option in fantasy.

TB - WR Kenny Bell could stretch the field

    Source: SportsTalkFlorida.com - Jenna Laine

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Kenny Bell is a player the team hopes can serve as their speed receiver. Bell ran a 4.37-second 40-yard dash but missed all last season with a hamstring injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bell did nothing of note in his rookie season, so anything would be an upgrade at this point. With Vincent Jackson aging, there is room to make an impact so he's worth keeping an eye on - though that's about all right now.

    PHI - Carson Wentz terms

    Source: SiriusXM NFL Radio

Updating an earlier report, Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz's four-year deal is worth $26 million with a $17.6 million signing bonus.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's in stark contrast to the money fellow Eagles signal caller Sam Bradford got when he was selected first overall in 2010 which was the largest ever by a rookie. With the money much more reasonable (Bradford's was a six-year, $78 million deal, which has $50 million of guarantee), the team can be cautious and take their time with Wentz. However, we know Bradford's injury history and his overall attitude after the draft, so it's not inconceivable that Wentz could take over this season. That makes this a shaky situation for fantasy and we'd tend to stay away from it.

TEN - TE Delanie Walker contract details

    Source: ESPN.com - Paul Kuharsky

Updating previous reports, Tennessee Titans TE Delanie Walker's new deal includes a $1 million roster bonus due Monday, May 16, and a $2.7 million guaranteed base this season, with up to $250,000 total in per-game roster bonuses. He has a $4.2 million base salary in 2017, fully guaranteed fifth day of league year, and up to $250,000 total in per-game roster bonuses. In 2018, he has a $500,000 roster bonus on fifth day of league year, a $5.4 million base and up to $250,000 total in per-game roster bonuses.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Walker picked a good time to top 1,000 yards for the first time in his ten year career. We think he has a shot to duplicate that, but see him as a TE2, as the offense matures past just dumping the ball to the tight end.

    Saturday Update

SF - San Francisco not ready to name QB

    Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) and QB Blaine Gabbert are expected to compete for the starting quarterback job during training camp, and head coach Chip Kelly said he has no idea who the starting quarterback will be in 2016.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gabbert has to be considered the frontrunner as of right now. Kaepernick is recovering from three surgeries, and he may not be near full strength until training camp. There's also the question of whether or not Kaepernick even wants to be in San Francisco after nearly getting traded to the Broncos earlier this year.

PHI - Carson Wentz does not expect tension

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Jarrett Bell

Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz said he expects to have a good relationship with QB Sam Bradford and does not expect any tension in the quarterback room. 'I think the relationship with him, and I believe with the other quarterbacks, will be great,' Wentz said. 'It will be a really competitive atmosphere. Hopefully, we’ll learn together, grow together and really push each other.' Wentz said he does not care what his role is as long as the team is winning.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wentz has the upside to be a top-12 QB in the NFL. He'll deal with this Bradford "friction" the right way. While Bradford once demanded a trade (after Wentz was selected), it seems like the veteran has finally realized that he's Sam Bradford and shouldn't be demanding anything.

SD - WR Keenan Allen will be a focal point

    Source: Chargers.com - Ricky Henne

San Diego Chargers WR Keenan Allen will be a focal point on offense in 2016, but he will have to show he can beat man coverage against some of the better cornerbacks in the league, according to offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's good news for the Chargers...so long as Allen can stay healthy. The team wants to run the ball with Melvin Gordon, but when they go to the air it should be Allen as the primary target. They added Travis Benjamin in free agency earlier this year to help stretch the field as a vertical threat. Allen has WR1 upside--again--if he can stay healthy.

SD - San Diego to use all RBs

    Source: Chargers.com - Ricky Henne

San Diego Chargers RBs Melvin Gordon, Danny Woodhead and Branden Oliver will all receive playing time in 2016, according to offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Whisenhunt said there will be times that two of the running backs will be on the field at the same time. The team will have packages for each running back so they can put them in positions where they will succeed. This RBBC may be something fantasy owners want to avoid. However, Woodhead should once again provide value for players in PPR leagues.

CHI - Coach thinks RB Jeremy Langford can improve

    Source: ChicagoBears.com - Larry Mayer

Chicago Bears RB Jeremy Langford could improve his work in the passing game, but the team likes where he is at this point, according to offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains. 'We like where Jeremy's at,' Loggains said. 'He needs to continue to develop. There are things he can do a better job of in the passing game.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Langford is a good all-purpose back, but we agree that he can improve his game. The Bears will be moving on from Matt Forte (Jets) this year, and Langford should have the first crack to be the lead back.

CHI - Jordan Howard will have role in 2016

    Source: ChicagoBears.com - Larry Mayer

Chicago Bears RB Jordan Howard will be used as a change-of-pace back in 2016 since he has a different style of running than RB Kendall Langford, according to offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains. 'He's a change-of-pace back. Their skill sets are different. We'll use the skill set the way it needs to be. We won't ask them to both do the same thing, but we'll find out what Howard does well and we'll play to that,' Loggains said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Howard might be the most natural runner in this draft class...yes, even above Ezekiel Elliott (Cowboys). While Elliot is an instant stud and worthy of a late first-round pick in your fantasy draft, Howard may be a pick in the late rounds that can pay off like a RB2. Watch to see if he can beat out Jeremy Langford to be the top back for the Bears.

CLE - Corey Coleman not in shape

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns WR Corey Coleman must get into better shape for his rookie season, according to head coach Hue Jackson 'He's got to get in shape,' Jackson said. 'He's explosive and he can catch the ball. He's extremely talented and gifted. (But) he's one of the guys that has to get in shape. He saw himself, 'whoa, this is different.' And it is. But we'll get him to where he needs to be.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Early on, rookies have to shape their bodies for the pro game. We're not worried about Coleman's physique right now. He's a speedy WR who should be able to take the top off the defense and fill in for the departed Travis Benjamin (Chargers).

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This wasn't a great TE class, but Henry was the best TE in the 2016 NFL draft. Just think Jason Witten (Cowboys) when considering what the rookie could be in the NFL. Antonio Gates isn't getting any younger, and Henry should take over as the lead TE at some point...perhaps even later this year.

The Jaguars made a great move when they traded up to get Jack near the top of the second round in the 2016 NFL draft. What stands out most about Stanley are his violent striking hands. He does a good job of striking his opponent quickly and forcefully, and he can control his man at the point of attack. Stanley is known as a durable and dependable player who should be a solid starter for the Ravens for years to come.

NFL - DE Greg Hardy devoid of suitors

    Source: ESPN - Ed Werder

Free-agent DE Greg Hardy (Cowboys) is having trouble finding a team, and the prevailing opinion from general managers around the league is that no one wants him.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is not shocking news. Hardy may be able to rush the passer, but he's a PR nightmare off the field. It's a long time until the regular season and things can change fast. But we would not be surprised if he did not play in 2016.

MIA - Miami to use Kenyan Drake's versatility
Source: The Miami Herald - Adam H. Beasley
Miami Dolphins RB Kenyan Drake will be used in as many ways as possible as a rookie. 'You look at his career, he's done a little bit of everything,' special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi said. 'He's caught passes. He's run the ball well. He's had high yards per carry. He's caught the ball out of the backfield. He's covered kicks.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We're not sold on most of the backfield, though Jay Ajayi is going to be the lead back. Don't be shocked if Drake gets a fair amount of snaps though, as Ajayi is just as unproven as the rookie.

    Sunday Update

CLE - QB Josh McCown could still be kept
Source: Akron Beacon Journal - Nate Ulrich
Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown could still stay with the Browns if he does not win the starting quarterback position, according to director of football operations Sashi Brown.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The draft has come and gone, so any QB-needy team has already filled the void. McCown is just a "bridge" QB for a franchise in transition at the position. Perhaps if there is an injury in training camp, the Browns would be able to deal the veteran quarterback. Robert Griffin III should start, McCown should be his primary backup and rookie Cody Kessler should be the team's third-string, developmental QB.

    SD - Hunter Henry impressing
Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken
San Diego Chargers TE Hunter Henry has been dominant in team drills at the Chargers' rookie minicamp. The rookies will mix in with the veterans Monday, May 16.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Henry is an impressive player, so it's not a surprise that he's make a positive mark early in rookie minicamp. Antonio Gates is still the main TE for the Chargers, but he could get phased out at some point this year to make room for Henry in the offense. He reminds us of Jason Witten (Cowboys) because of his smooth athleticism and ability to work well on underneath routes.

IND - Unlikely to rejoin OLB Dwight Freeney
    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Wells
Free-agent DE Dwight Freeney (Cardinals) probably won't be coming back to the Indianapolis Colts despite his desire to play in 2016, according to ESPN.com's Mike Wells.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Never say never, but signs seem to indicate that Freeney isn't going to return to the Colts. Freeney is not the same player he used to be and has 12 sacks over the last three years with two different teams (Chargers, Cardinals).

CHI - WR Kevin White compared to Andre Johnson
Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Michael David Smith
Chicago Bears WR Kevin White was compared to Indianapolis Colts Andre Johnson by Bears wide receivers coach Curtis Johnson. Johnson coached Johnson at the University of Miami. 'He's very similar to him. They're both big and physical and fast,' Johnson said. 'That doesn't all go together sometimes. White has hand similar to [former Indianapolis Colts] WR Reggie Wayne. So he was one of those guys where when you looked at the draft and watched television, you say this guy is going to be a bona fide player.'
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We're not buying the comparison. He's more like DeAndre Hopkins, if healthy and playing up to his potential. White has tremendous inside release to get open on tight coverage at the line of scrimmage. He wins at the point of the catch and does a good job of tracking passes over his shoulder. We'll see if White can start producing at an expected level after missing all of his rookie season in 2015.

ATL - CB Leon Hall not an option
    Source: ESPN.com - Vaughn McClure
Free-agent CB Leon Hall (Bengals) will not be signing with the Atlanta Falcons, according to a source. The Falcons did meet with Hall earlier this offseason.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Hall is recovering from offseason back surgery, and that may be why the Falcons are saying "no thanks" at this time. The Giants have met with Hall, and they might be the team with the most interest.

CLE - Coach happy with Cody Kessler
Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot
Cleveland Browns QB Cody Kessler performed well during practice Friday, May 13, but it is too early to say if Kessler will compete for the starting quarterback job, according to head coach Hue Jackson. Kessler showed good accuracy and footwork during practice and was comfortable under center and in the shotgun formation.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Kessler was an...interesting...pick for the Browns in the third round of the 2016 NFL draft. He had intriguing upside and potential in college at USC, but Kessler never seemed to fully flourish in his skill set. He's a safe QB who does not like to challenge the edge of a defense. Kessler is accurate in the pocket (70.4 percent) on intermediate routes, and he could be Hue Jackson's new version of Andy Dalton. If he works out, we see Kessler as a poor man's version of Dalton.

OAK - Karl Joseph not on the field
    Source: The Associated Press
Oakland Raiders SS Karl Joseph (knee) did not participate in practice Friday, May 13, because he is recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We're excited about this rookie. He's an enforcer who can roam the field and has a nose for the ball. Joseph said his rehab is on schedule and expects to be ready for training camp.

OAK - Jihad Ward practices Friday
    Source: CSNBayArea.com - Scott Bair
Oakland Raiders DE Jihad Ward (knee) fully participated in practice Friday, May 13, and said he will not need another surgery on his knee.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Ward gives the Raiders yet another strong pass-rusher for their defense. He can get to the QB from either end spot, and Ward can even move inside to tackle on certain downs. The team will monitor him closely as they go through the offseason.
