NFL Player News - Week of August 17th

BUF - QB Tyrod Taylor working with starters
    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Rodak
Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor is working with the first-team offense during practice Sunday, Aug. 16.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Taylor offers potential as a runner and isn't far behind his competition as a passer, if he is behind EJ Manuel at all in that respect. He has a real shot to start for this team, which would be good news for Lesean McCoy since teams would have to gameplan to stop the quarterback as a runner too.

TEN - Line to blame for RB Bishop Sankey's play?

    Source: ESPN.com - Paul Kuharsky

Tennessee Titans RB Bishop Sankey averaged just 1.9 yards per carry on eight rushing attempts in a preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons Friday, Aug. 14, and head coach Ken Whisenhunt said some of Sankey's issues could be blamed on the play of the offensive line.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Even if this is supposed to acquit Sankey, it still shouldn't make you more eager to draft him. The results tell the story no matter who is to blame.

TEN - QB Marcus Mariota runs option play

    Source: ESPN.com - Paul Kuharsky

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota ran an option-based play during practice Sunday, Aug. 16. Operating out of shotgun, Mariota faked a handoff to RB Bishop Sankey before sprinting to the left and throwing a slightly forward pass to WR Harry Douglas.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That one option play makes a headline is a sign that the Titans haven't exactly gone all-in on the read option running game. It could help both Mariota's fantasy stock and the overall running game if it is pulled out with some precision in execution.

ATL - RB Evan Royster added

    Source: ESPN.com - Vaughn McClure

Free-agent RB Evan Royster (Redskins) signed with the Atlanta Falcons Sunday, Aug. 16. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Royster played under offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan in Washington. Tevin Coleman, Devonta Freeman, and Antone Smith are hurt and Terron Ward looked unimpressive in the preseason opener. Royster is merely competent at his best, but he could make the team and be poised to play a big role if the top backs can't get and stay healthy.

HOU - QB Ryan Mallett to start vs. Denver

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett will be the starting quarterback for the second preseason game against the Denver Broncos Saturday, Aug. 22.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Both Mallett and Hoyer performed well in the preseason opener, and second-year QB Tom Savage wasn't bad either. This battle is still wide open and so far the news is positive for the team's offense.

NYG - WR Rueben Randle may sit a few days

    Source: ESPN.com - Dan Graziano

New York Giants WR Rueben Randle (knee) could miss a few days of practice so he can allow his knee to heal. Randle tried to play in the first preseason games but left early because of knee tendonitis.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If it's just a few days, then Randle shouldn't be moved down on draft boards. His attractiveness as a second half of the draft upside play at wide receiver is tarnished a bit by this condition, which could pop up again in season, but he can recover and look good in the third preseason game, it will do a lot to restore confidence.

WAS - TE Jordan Reed could miss preseason game

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins TE Jordan Reed (hamstring) may not play in the second preseason game Thursday, Aug. 20, because of a hamstring injury. Reed said he hopes to be able to dress for the game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Reed is the last man standing among the top three Washington tight ends, but it might more like last man limping right now. He's still only a boom/bust TE2 despite the increased opportunity and his propensity to get hurt is why.

BUF - Buffalo still looking for No. 2 WR

Source: The Buffalo News - Vic Carucci

Buffalo Bills WR Percy Harvin has been pushing WR Robert Woods for the No. 2 wide receiver job during training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This would matter more if the Bills pass offense had potential to produce more than one (maybe even one) consistent pass-catching option.

BUF - PK Dan Carpenter practicing

    Source: WKBW.com - Joe Buscaglia

Buffalo Bills PK Dan Carpenter (hamstring) is participating in practice Sunday, Aug. 16, for the first time since training camp started.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Carpenter is set up to be one of the most valuable kickers in fantasy leagues on a team with subpar offense and terrific defense. This is encouraging news and it makes Carpenter safe to draft assuming he has no setbacks in the next few days.

TB - QB Jameis Winston has typical day

    Source: NFL.com - Marc Sessler

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston had a typical Jameis Winston day Saturday, Aug. 15, according to head coach Love Smith. 'Pretty good decisions. We'd like to have that one interception back, but I thought he threw some pretty good balls. That's what you judge your quarterback on, decision-making. For the most part, I think it was pretty good,' Smith said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cam Newton was terrible his first preseason and Blake Bortles was terrific. We won't be able to really judge Winston until the bullets are live, but potentially losing right tackle Demar Dotson can't help.

HOU - WR Cecil Shorts dazzles

    Source: CBSHouston.com - Cody Stoots

Houston Texans WR Cecil Shorts took a Brian Hoyer pass 58 yards to the end zone Saturday, Aug. 15, against the San Francisco 49ers.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Shorts looked good and he has been winning in the slot consistent according to Texans insider Lance Zierlein. He could have bye/emergency/injury bench wide receiver value if he stays healthy this year. Staying healthy is not Shorts' strong suit, so he's more of a waiver wire watch list player than a late draft target.

SD - QB Philip Rivers extended

    Source: Chargers.com

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers has agreed to a four-year extension, the team announced Saturday, Aug. 15. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Remember when he was going to be traded for Marcus Mariota? Good times.

As for rivers it's looking more and more like he'll retire without reaching a SB

    Tuesday Update

ARI - RB Chris Johnson agrees to terms

    Source: FOXSports.com - Jay Glazer

Free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Jets) agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals Monday, Aug. 17. Financial terms were not disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Last year was the first season that Johnson did not rush for over 1,000 yards. He finished the season with only 663 yards and one rushing touchdown for the Jets. Johnson now will compete with rookie David Johnson to work as a complementary back behind Andre Ellington. If Johnson has anything left in the tank, he could cut into Ellington's workload and frustrate fantasy owners.

DEN - RB C.J. Anderson is fine

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Denver Broncos RB C.J. Anderson (undisclosed) was running and cutting at full speed in practice Monday, Aug. 17, after leaving the team's preseason game over the weekend.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Our very own Cecil Lammey was watching Anderson closely today and reported the Broncos starter looked good on the practice field. Anderson could have come back into the game against the Seahawks, but the team decided to take a longer look at backups Ronnie Hillman and Montee Ball. At this time, there is no clear handcuff for Anderson. Hillman looked great in the preseason game against Seattle, while Ball has been performing well in camp.

NYG - QB Eli Manning wants to be highest paid QB

    Source: NFL Network

New York Giants QB Eli Manning wants to be the highest paid quarterback in the league, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com Monday, Aug. 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Philip Rivers just signed a deal with the Chargers over the weekend that pays him $65 million in guarantees. Manning wants more money, and with two Super Bowl rings that Rivers doesn't have he might be able to get that. The two sides seem to be far apart in contract talks at this time but things can change quickly.

CHI - WR Alshon Jeffery out of walking boot

    Source: WSCR670 - Zach Zaidman

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery (calf) is no longer wearing a walking boot but is not ready to participate in practice at this point.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bears have expressed confidence that Jeffery will be ready for the start of the regular season. It would be nice if he could make the third preseason game, but the Bears are going to be incredibly cautious after losing Kevin White for about half the year (or more).

HOU - HOU QB announcement still not set

Source: Houston Chronicle - John McClain

Houston Texans QBs Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett still don't know who will start this season. Head coach Bill O'Brien said he doesn't know when a starter will be named. Hoyer started the Texans' first preseason game, but O'Brien said Mallett would start the second preseason game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners are not on the edge of their seat waiting for this decision. Hoyer has the experience advantage, but Mallett has the stronger arm. The whole situation is a mess and will hold down the numbers of the passing game.

BUF - WR Sammy Watkins leaves practice

Source: WGR Sports Radio 550 - Joe Buscaglia

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (gluteus) left practice early Monday, Aug. 17, with gluteal tightness, according to head coach Rex Ryan.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This injury situation is a real pain in the butt for Watkins. Sorry, we just couldn't resist. It doesn't sound serious, so Watkins should be back out there soon enough.

ATL - WR Roddy White thinks highly of offense

    Source: ESPN.com - Vaughn McClure

Atlanta Falcons WR Roddy White said Monday, Aug. 17, he thinks the team's offense has the ability to average 30 points per game in 2015 under offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan's scheme.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Falcons are going to need to score 30 points per game with their shoddy defense. Fantasy owners are dialed in on Julio Jones as a top-5 fantasy wide receiver. White is no longer the same player he used to be, but we still like him as a WR3/WR4 who could snare about 75 catches this season.

DEN - WR Emmanuel Sanders to sit a few more days

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeff Legwold

Denver Broncos WR Emmanuel Sanders (hamstring) will be held out of practice for a few more days to make sure his injured hamstring has time to heal. The team is not concerned about Sanders' status for the start of the season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sanders did get some work in before the preseason opener against the Seahawks, but he experienced soreness after that. The team is going to be cautious with Sanders moving forward. He's catching passes off to the side every day at training camp, and he should be back with the rest of the team in the near future.

MIA - WR Kenny Stills puts on a show

Source: The Miami Herald - Adam H. Beasley

Miami Dolphins WR Kenny Stills (calf) returned to practice Monday, Aug. 17, and he finished practice with several receptions.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We like Stills as that perfect last-round pick in your fantasy draft. He's got the speed to take the top off the defense, and he could be everything that Mike Wallace wasn't for the Dolphins. If healthy, Stills should start on the outside opposite Jarvis Landry.

NYG - WR Rueben Randle not practicing

    Source: NJ.com - Jordan Raanan

New York Giants WR Rueben Randle (knee) isn't practicing Monday, Aug. 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Randle's knee injury isn't considered serious, but it's been about a week since he's practiced. He did try to play in the Giants first preseason game, but he quickly exited due to this knee problem.

BAL - WR Breshad Perriman remains out

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens WR Breshad Perriman (knee) did not participate in practice Monday, Aug. 17. Perriman has missed the team's last 12 practices because of the injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We like the rookie's upside, but he's got to get healthy, stay healthy and impress if he wants to make an impact his first season in the pros.

NYG - WR Victor Cruz may play Saturday

    Source: NJ.com - Jordan Raanan

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (knee) said he is 100% healthy and believes he has a chance to play in the second preseason game Saturday, Aug. 22. Cruz expects to fully participate in practice Monday, Aug. 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Holy cow. All reports have been positive about Cruz during his recovery, but we didn't expect him to play in the preseason at all--let alone the second preseason game. We can't wait to see him back on the field, but know that the team is going to be cautious upon his return.

BUF - Two Bills RBs out of practice

Source: WGR Sports Radio 550 - Joe Buscaglia

Buffalo Bills RBs Fred Jackson (hamstring) and Anthony Dixon (calf) did not practice Monday, Aug. 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It seems like everyone outside of LeSean McCoy is dinged up in the Bills backfield. Jackson has barely practiced since the start of training camp, and he's in danger of losing the RB2 job in Buffalo to rookie Karlos Williams.

BUF - QB EJ Manuel plays with second team

Source: WGR Sports Radio 550 - Joe Buscaglia

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel received second-team repetitions Monday, Aug. 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's a good chance that Manuel doesn't make this team. At this time, it seems like the QB competition is down to Matt Cassel or Tyrod Taylor.

TEN - RB David Cobb critiques himself

    Source: TitansOnline.com - Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans rookie RB David Cobb said he wants to improve on his reads and breaking tackles after the Titans' first preseason game. Head coach Ken Whisenhunt must have seen something different, saying Cobb earned more time with the first-team offense after his performance.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners need to be alert here. Bishop Sankey could begin the season as the starter, but we believe Cobb is the better back and could take over at some point this year. Cobb is a powerful, efficient and determined runner. He's not going to break ankles, but he may break facemasks. He doesn't shy away from contact, and Cobb can create his own space as a runner because of his powerful lower body. With a larger opportunity, the rookie could easily outperform his current ADP (RB48, 11.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

MIA - WR DeVante Parker does some running

Source: The Miami Herald - Adam H. Beasley

Miami Dolphins WR DeVante Parker (foot) was able to do some light jogging during practice Monday, Aug. 17. Head coach Joe Philbin said he is optimistic about the possibility of Parker playing in a preseason game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Parker is unlikely to play in the preseason and could be a slow starter during the season. He's still worth a late pick in leagues as long as the benches aren't extremely short.

JAX - RB T.J. Yeldon limited

    Source: Jaguars.com - John Oehser

Jacksonville Jaguars RB T.J. Yeldon (finger) is in a red, non-contact jersey in practice Monday, Aug. 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Yeldon's finger injury is considered minor, but the team is going to be cautious with their lead back as he deals with this.

CLE - RB Duke Johnson out Monday

Cleveland Browns RB Duke Johnson (hamstring) is out of practice Monday, Aug. 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The rookie is a speed back, so a hamstring injury will slow him down more than others. The Browns have visions of him being an explosive change-of-pace back this season. We'll see if he can get healthy and impress.

    Wednesday Update

BUF - RB LeSean McCoy will have MRI

Source: WGR Sports Radio 550 - Joe Buscaglia

Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy (hamstring) will have an MRI on the hamstring injury that caused him to leave practice Tuesday, Aug. 18. The hamstring is not off the bone, however.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Terrible news for the Bills here. They already have almost all of the running backs on the roster battling some sort of ailment, and now they'll be without McCoy for a while. Hamstring injuries are known to linger if not treated properly, and this injury doesn't sound minor. We'll know more about the severity when the MRI results are revealed.

PHI - Concern over RB DeMarco Murray's workload

    Source: NFL.com - Chris Wesseling

Philadelphia Eagles RB DeMarco Murray's 2014 workload is cause for concern, according to head coach Chip Kelly Tuesday, Aug. 18. 'Our plan all along was to get another running back with him. I wanted to have two running backs, and that's why we got Ryan [Mathews]. I don't think you can have a guy carry it 370 to 400 times per season and be successful. We're going to run it a lot -- we always do -- but we'll have more than one guy doing it,' Kelly said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Don't be surprised if Murray has 100 fewer carries than he did last year. In 2014, Murray rushed the ball a whopping 393 times. This year, we think he gets the rock about 270 times with Mathews serving as a valuable backup.

ARI - RB Andre Ellington should still start

    Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington is still expected to be the starting running back, according to Darren Urban of azcardinals.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The arrival of Chris Johnson has thrown fantasy owners into a funk. Chris Johnson was added in large part due to David Johnson's durability issues. Ellington is the lead back, and either Johnson will work in a committee as a change-of-pace back.

NYG - QB Eli Manning's desired contract details

Source: New York Daily News - Ralph Vacchiano

New York Giants QB Eli Manning is looking to be paid at least as much as QBs Philip Rivers and Ben Roethlisberger, and he's not necessarily looking to be the highest paid player in football.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Earlier this week, the Chargers agreed to terms with QB Philip Rivers on a four-year, $83.25 million extension through 2019, and we think Manning should get something similar.

CHI - WR Alshon Jeffery won't play Monday

    Source: ESPNChicago.com - Jeff Dickerson

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery (calf) will not play in the Bears' second preseason game Monday, Aug. 24, as he continues to heal from a calf strain. He will travel with the team, however.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jeffery was out of his walking boot yesterday, but this calf injury will still hold him back. We may see him shut down for the rest of the preseason because of this calf problem.

BUF - RB Karlos Williams out several weeks

Source: The Buffalo News - Tyler Dunne

Buffalo Bills RB Karlos Williams (undisclosed) is dealing with an undisclosed serious injury and will miss multiple weeks.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams was building momentum towards a bigger role and maybe even the no2 RB role sooner than later. That was brought to a halt by this development, but he should still make the team based on what he showed before the illness and surgery.

BAL - WR Breshad Perriman should return in a week

    Source: BleacherReport.com - Jason Cole

Baltimore Ravens WR Breshad Perriman (knee) is healing slowly, though the results of his MRI were normal, according to a source. He's expected back in a week or so.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We've been waiting to see Perriman do his thing. The rookie has exciting upside because of his speed and ball-tracking ability. Perriman is behind his teammates since he missed so much time. However, he's got the best natural ability of all the receivers behind Steve Smith. When he gets up to speed, he could be challenging to start on the outside.

TEN - RB David Cobb wants more work

Source: The Tennessean - John Glennon and David Climer

Tennessee Titans rookie RB David Cobb wants to prove to the Titans that he can be a three-down running back. Cobb wants to stay on the field and block during passing downs, not just run the ball.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We want Cobb to get more work too! The rookie is a powerful back with an efficient and determined running style. We like him better than Bishop Sankey, and fantasy owners shouldn't be surprised if (when?) Cobb takes over as the Titans lead back.

CLE - RB Duke Johnson doesn't practice

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns RB Duke Johnson (hamstring) is not practicing for a second consecutive day Tuesday, Aug. 18.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Johnson is a speedy back, and this hamstring injury has slowed him down. The team wants to get him healthy before he's out there participating in practice.

WAS - TE Jordan Reed may play Week 3 of preseason

    Source: Redskins.com

Washington Redskins TE Jordan Reed (hamstring) is hopeful for Week 3 of the preseason, against the Baltimore Ravens.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team needs Reed to get healthy, stay healthy, and produce this year. Niles Paul (leg) has been lost for the year, and they also lost Logan Paulsen (toe) to a season-ending injury. If healthy, Reed has the talent to perform like a TE2 with TE1 upside for fantasy owners.

JAX - TE Julius Thomas limited Tuesday

    Source: Jaguars.com - John Oehser

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (hand) is in a red, non-contact jersey at practice Tuesday, Aug. 18.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That Thomas is still with the team and able to get some kind of work in helps his bid to get back on the field for Week 1. That might not happen, but Thomas's injury has overshadowed a lot of buzz about him being potentially the #1 option in this pass offense. He's a value if he falls past the 9th round or so.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Yeldon is going to be part of a split backfield to start the season with the team ramping up to him as more of a feature back as the season goes on according to ESPN writer Mike DiRocco. This could be consistent with that cautious approach.

    Thursday Update

CAR - WR Kelvin Benjamin has torn ACL

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) tore his anterior cruciate ligament Wednesday, Aug. 19. He is expected to miss the rest of the season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This injury takes the wind out of the sails of the Panthers passing game. Benjamin was the 16th-best fantasy receiver in the league last year, and he's the most important target for Cam Newton. With guys like rookie Devin Funchess and veterans Ted Ginn Jr. and Jerricho Cotchery, the Panthers are likely to struggle moving the ball through the air.

CAR - WR depth shaken up in Carolina

Source: The Associated Press - Steve Reed

Carolina Panthers WRs Corey Brown and Jerricho Cotchery are currently the top two wide receivers on Carolina's depth chart, according to Steve Reed of the Associated Press.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brown is a speedy guy who can get by defenders. Cotchery is the seasoned veteran who can be reliable underneath. We're not excited by either player's fantasy prospects. Without Kelvin Benjamin, we're avoiding players in the Panthers passing game except TE Greg Olsen.

MIA - S Louis Delmas has torn ACL

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Miami Dolphins FS Louis Delmas (knee) has been diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Delmas has had a rough run of injuries over the course of his career. Their pass rush is so good that the Dolphins might not miss Delmas much in the back of the defense, especially with Brent Grimes on #1 receivers.

DET - RB Joique Bell to keep starting job per Zach Zenner

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions RB Joique Bell (knee, Achilles') will return as the starting running back when he returns from the Physically Unable to Perform list, according to RB Zach Zenner.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

First off, we're not sure Zach Zenner is the authority here. Even so, we could see that happening, but rookie Ameer Abdullah is going to force a RBBC at least. Bell is coming back from two injuries, while Abdullah is dazzling at most every practice. Abdullah has speed, big-play ability and quickness in the open field. He's a smaller back, but he runs tough inside. Abdullah is at least an electric change-of-pace back, but he could end up as the more valuable fantasy asset in the Lions backfield.

SD - RB Melvin Gordon wants to improve

    Source: NFL.com - Chris Wesseling

San Diego Chargers RB Melvin Gordon wants to be a more decisive runner. Gordon said he needs to work on calming himself down and let the game come to him, acknowledging that success is a process and doesn't happen right away.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gordon needs to improve his pass-protection ability. If he does that, the role for him should be large this season. Gordon is a RB2 with RB1 upside for fantasy owners.

BUF - RB LeSean McCoy will be ready for opener

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy (hamstring) will be ready for Week 1, a source said after McCoy had an MRI.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's the hope for the team, but we'll have to see how reports indicate his progress during recovery. Hamstring injuries are tricky, and they can aggravate with only the slightest of missteps. This is a good piece of news for McCoy's fantasy owners, but whether or not he'll be ready is up in the air right now.

PIT - WR Markus Wheaton likely to start

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Ed Bouchette

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Markus Wheaton is likely to start over WR Martavis Bryant, in the opinion of beat writer Ed Bouchette. The team uses three receivers a lot, and Bryant will see the field often.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The starter on the outside could be Wheaton, but Bryant's fantasy value is still going to be interesting because of his red-zone presence and big-play ability. Wheaton is going off the board right now at WR55 (12.05) while Bryant's ADP is WR24 (5.04) in 12-team PPR leagues. We imagine with this news hitting the wire, we'll see the two get a little closer in ADP.

MIA - WR Jarvis Landry is go-to receiver

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Miami Dolphins WR Jarvis Landry is considered the 'go-to receiver' for QB Ryan Tannehill, according to beat writer Armando Salguero.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good! Landry should be the go-to receiver for Tannehill. The second-year pro from LSU has hands, concentration and fearlessness when running routes over the middle. He should be a favorite target for Tannehill once again, and fantasy owners should consider Landry a low-end WR2 with upside.

DAL - RB Darren McFadden taking 1st-team reps

    Source: NFL.com - Chris Wesseling

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden was taking first-team repetitions Monday, Aug. 17. McFadden dominated one-on-one pass drills, impressing owner/general manager Jerry Jones, 'McFadden hit that thing for the first time up in there and showed some real stuff, and he sure showed some real burst in a couple of drills where they weren't just full tackling,' Jones raved Tuesday morning. 'Boy, if we can keep him out there, he'll tear their you know what up.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Yes, it's actually news when McFadden practices. If healthy, he could push Joseph Randle for the starting job....but we're not expecting that. McFadden is a talented backup for Randle in our eyes. We'll see if he can do anything to change our mind.

Source: The Denver Post - Troy E. Renck

Denver Broncos RB C.J. Anderson (hip) had his hip evaluated Wednesday, Aug. 19, after a hit from LB Danny Trevathan. There was, however, no concussion.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Trevathan popped Anderson after he caught a pass after beating the linebacker to the spot. Anderson missed one play, then he ran for a touchdown past the outstretched arms of Trevathan.

NYG - Odell Beckham not practicing

    Source: NJ.com - Jordan Raanan

New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. (undisclosed) is not practicing Wednesday, Aug. 19.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This could just be a day of rest for Beckham. However, it could be a sign that Beckham is not ready to return to action after dealing with a hamstring injury this training camp. He missed four games last year at the start of the season due to hamstring problems. The Giants are going to be careful with him as he deals with a hamstring problem this year.

NYJ - QB Matt Flynn has injury

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets QB Matt Flynn (ankle) is recovering from an injured ankle and won't be ready to play for another week, according to head coach Todd Bowles. Flynn recently signed a one-year deal with the Jets.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Flynn is recovering from an injury that bothered him during his brief stint with the Patriots. The veteran has made more than $18 million in his pro career despite only starting seven games during that time. Good work if you can get it. Flynn's roster spot should be safe as the primary backup behind Ryan Fitzpatrick. Rookie Bryce Petty should stick around as a third-string developmental quarterback.

BUF - RB Fred Jackson focused mentally

    Source: BuffaloBills.com - Chris Brown

Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (hamstring) is focused on being prepared mentally while he's sidelined with a nagging hamstring injury. 'We have to just get in the playbook and know what to expect when the play is called and know what kind of looks we'll get and just be prepared mentally if we can't do it physically.' Head coach Rex Ryan hopes Jackson will be well enough in time for the Bills' third preseason game Saturday, Aug. 29.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jackson's hamstring injury has been described as severe, so having him ready in a week or so might be a stretch. The team needs whatever help they can get at running back, and Jackson would be their best option with superstar LeSean McCoy down with his own hamstring injury.

PHI - RB DeMarco Murray not sure if he will play

    Source: NFL.com - Conor Orr

Philadelphia Eagles RB DeMarco Murray does not know if he will play in the second preseason game but believes he can play if he is in uniform. Murray fully participated in practice Wednesday, Aug. 19, and has no doubt that he will be ready for the start of the season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Murray mysteriously missed the first preseason game for the Eagles. He's been going through practice, but reports indicate that he's not at full speed. The Eagles say he's not injured, and the team is just giving him some rest after the 436 carry season he had last year for the Cowboys.

DEN - QB Peyton Manning throwing better?

    Source: ESPN - Mark Schlereth

Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning's velocity has looked great. One Denver coach said Manning has been throwing better than he did in 2012, according to ESPN's Mark Schlereth.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Manning has looked fantastic with fewer reps at Broncos training camp. This team is going to run the ball more than people expect, but Manning is throwing with better velocity and distance than he has during his entire Denver career. We like him as a mid-range QB1 for fantasy owners in this more efficient offense.

SD - SD will use shotgun less
    Source: ESPN.com - Eric D. Williams
San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers and the rest of the San Diego offense will not be lined up in the shotgun as much in 2015. Rivers will line up under center more this season in an attempt to create a more balanced offense, according to head coach Mike McCoy. McCoy added that the Chargers' opponent will influence how often they use shotgun.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Chargers want to feature rookie RB Melvin Gordon as much as possible. Gordon has the speed to get by defenders in a flash. We like him as a RB2 with RB1 upside this season.

MIA - WR DeVante Parker's timetable unchanged

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Miami Dolphins WR DeVante Parker's (foot) timetable should remain the same even though he was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's good to see Parker off the PUP list, but it's no indication he's going to be practicing fully anytime soon. Parker is still targeting Week 1 for his return to the field.

WAS - WR Pierre Garcon working with QB

    Source: CSNWashington.com - Rich Tandler

Washington Pierre Garcon has been participating in extra work with QB Robert Griffin III to make sure they are on the same page when the season starts.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There are some who are believing in a Garcon bounceback this year. At the very least this could help if Griffin remains the starter.

NE - WR Julian Edelman working out

    Source: WEEI.com - Christopher Price

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (ankle) is working out at Gillette Stadium Wednesday, Aug. 19, and is not with the team for their joint practice with the New Orleans Saints.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There hasn't been much buzz around Edelman's injury, but he wasn't the most durable before his last two successful years. Danny Amendola could be a rare WR handcuff if Edelman is not healthy heading into the season.

NYG - WR Rueben Randle idle

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Dan Graziano

New York Giants WR Rueben Randle (knee) won't practice Wednesday, Aug. 19.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Randle is battling knee tendonitis. It takes some of the luster off his stock as an upside bench wide receiver to target.

DEN - WR Emmanuel Sanders still out

Denver Broncos WR Emmanuel Sanders (hamstring) is not participating in practice Wednesday, Aug. 19.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sanders hamstring injury was supposed to be minor. If he doesn't play in the third preseason game, it might be time to move him down to the bottom of his tier.

The Atlanta Falcons are interested in free-agent QB Rex Grossman (Redskins), according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

What took so long for this story to come out? Kyle Shanahan is the new OC in Atlanta, and Grossman is his guy. The two have worked together on multiple teams, and Grossman could give the team valuable veteran depth behind Matt Ryan.

    Friday Update

WAS - QB Robert Griffin III suffers stinger
    Source: NFL.com - Gregg Rosenthal

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (head, shoulder) left the preseason game against the Detroit Lions in the second quarter Thursday, Aug. 20, after suffering a shoulder stinger. He spent three minutes on the ground with a trainer after several Detroit players landed on his arm following a fumble. Griffin was also required to go through the NFL's concussion protocol.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Our Dr. Jene Bramel had this: "Griffin took a hit to the top of his right shoulder and the right side of his helmet. Sideline reports said Griffin suffered a stinger and was taken to the locker room to be evaluated for a concussion, which is reasonable after watching the play. Assuming the sideline report proves accurate, Griffin's clearance to return to practice this week will depend on whether his symptoms linger from either injury."

DAL - RB Joseph Randle leaves practice

Dallas Cowboys RB Joseph Randle (oblique) left practice early Thursday, Aug. 20.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Getting clarity on this backfield is no easy task to begin with. Add in the injuries and running back by committee and this looks like a backfield to avoid. Randle had the most potential as an RB3, Darren McFadden looks more like a RB4 or RB5 and Lance Dunbar is no better than an RB6. It's a big mess and your best bet is to pick a poison and hope. We'd look for a better situation.

GB - QB Aaron Rodgers feels like old self

    Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky

Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers said he's back to playing the way he likes to play after dealing with a calf injury last season. Rodgers said that means extending plays and getting rid of the football when he needs to. The prolific quarterback added that if he has the chance to improve a play from outside the pocket, then he's not afraid to do that. Rodgers said he's kept his body in shape and improved his endurance in order to be more ready for longer-lasting plays throughout games.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rodgers is an instant QB1 every year and arguably the only quarterback you'd take in the first round, albeit at the end of it. With Randall Cobb under contract he's got his dynamic duo all set with him and Jordy Nelson. This is a potent offense and one with tremendous fantasy production on deck once again.

NYG - WR Victor Cruz waiting for game action

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Dan Graziano

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (calf) has yet to play in a real football game since tearing his patellar tendon last season. He won't Saturday, Aug. 22, against the Philadelphia Eagles either. He is hoping to be able to play in at least one preseason game before the regular season starts, however. 'You want to go out there in real-time action and get some good, solid work in with everyone else and everyone ready to go, but that's not always the case,' Cruz said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

NJ.com's Jordan Raanan recently said that even if Cruz is 100% healthy this season, nobody knows if he'll be what he was before the injury. He is also currently fighting a calf injury, sustained during the Wednesday, August 19th practice. Add in the Odell Beckham Jr factor and the injury-riddled offensive line, and you should keep your expectations lower than normal. We see him as a borderline WR4-WR5, with a slight bump in PPR leagues.

SD - RB Melvin Gordon back at practice

Source: 1090 AM San Diego - Marty Caswell

San Diego Chargers RB Melvin Gordon (ankle) returned to practice Thursday, Aug. 20.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gordon's injury is not an issue, but his hesitation at the line in the first preseason game is. If he continues to look less sharp than Branden Oliver, he might not even be worth drafting as an RB2 this year.

NO - RB Mark Ingram being featured

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Triplett

New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram has been featured as a receiver out of the backfield in practice Thursday, Aug. 20.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This makes sense with CJ Spiller out. If you believe Spiller is going to have trouble staying on the field again this year, Ingram might end up being worth your second round pick, and certainly worth your third. While Ingram has had some durability issues of his own, he could end up being a true feature back this year.

CAR - WR Devin Funchess out of practice Thursday

Source: The Associated Press - Steve Reed

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess (hamstring) is out of practice Thursday, Aug. 20, with a hamstring injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Just what the Panthers need....another WR down with injury. The team is going to turn to Funchess with Kelvin Benjamin out for the year. The rookie has size, and he may get used in the red zone quite a bit. We'll see if he can develop, but fantasy owners need to know that Funchess is much more raw than Benjamin was last year as a rookie.

CAR - WR Corey Brown will have opportunity

    Source: USA TODAY Fantasy Sports

Carolina Panthers WR Corey Brown, formerly known as Philly, could see an expanded role in the offense following the loss of WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee). However, he has been rather inconsistent at times and he lacks the size that Benjamin has.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good luck with that. Outside of Greg Olsen, we're not crazy about any asset in the Panthers passing game.

PHI - QB Tim Tebow should make team

    Source: ESPN.com

Updating a previous report, Philadelphia Eagles QB Tim Tebow continues to impress head coach Chip Kelly, and Tebow is expected to earn a spot on the active roster if he doesn't make any glaring errors over the rest of the preseason, according to a team source. Kelly has been impressed with Tebow's running ability and his improvement throwing the football. Tebow can become a valuable weapon with the new two-point rule and in short-yardage situations. QB Matt Barkley is available for trade. Tebow was 6-for-12 for 69 yards in the team's first preseason game last weekend, and he had four carries for 15 yards and a touchdown.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Chip Kelly is definitely running the show here and it's a good bet he has something in mind for Tebow. It likely spells doom for Matt Barkley who has been less than impressive. There's no point in fostering Tebow though as it will take multiple injuries to get him under center for more than gimmick plays. Yes, Sam Bradford is an injury risk but it's unlikey Tebow would hop over Mark Sanchez, who is more polished and played well in Kelly's system last season.

HOU - OLB Jadeveon Clowney improving

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) continues to increase his activities in training camp practices after being activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list, although his mobility isn't the same as it was before his injury. Clowney was able to plant his feet and change directions Thursday, Aug. 20, and he's looking more confident in his return. He's made significant progress from his rehab from knee problems that limited him in his rookie season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Texans need Clowney for this defense to repeat last season's success. Last season was all JJ Watt and an unreal season. Clowney needs to live up to that first overall pick.

NYG - WR Rueben Randle not practicing again

    Source: NJ.com - James Kratch

New York Giants WR Rueben Randle (knee) missed practice again Thursday, Aug. 20, with knee tendinitis.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Randle was supposed to be the third receiver but is dealing with knee tendinitis. He needs to get on the field if he is going to have an impact in that role. Right now we see him as a WR4 or WR5.

BUF - QB Matt Cassel has improved

Source: NFL Network - Albert Breer

Buffalo Bills QB Matt Cassel has played better since the spring, mainly because of his healed foot. Cassel is primarily competing with QB Tyrod Taylor for the starting quarterback position.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We know what Cassel is—a mediocre quarterback who can keep the offense going, but nothing more. We don't know what Taylor is though, and he may have more upside. Ultimately, this is an offense that is supposed to run early and often, with a so-so offensive line. Even with Sammy Watkins around, neither of these quarterbacks is worth a roster spot.

PIT - Le'Veon Bell thinks he can play better

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell said he believes he can play better this season because he thinks he is quicker than he was last season. 'A lot of people talk about the season I had last year. They call it a breakout season, but I don't look at it like that,' Bell said. 'I look at it as me just getting started. ... I still feel like I can do a lot of things better. Last year wasn't even close to me being my best.' Bell said he lost four pounds this offseason and is at 2.9% body fat.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Arguably the top overall pick in fantasy this season, Bell is an attractive option even if he is missing 2 games at the start of the season. That he's pushing himself to be even better is great to hear and should make any owner on the fence jump off it. If he can stay healthy, we see tremendous things from him this year.

ARI - RB Chris Johnson happy with new team

    Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson said he likes the idea of playing with QB Carson Palmer and all of the other weapons the team has on offense. Johnson likes that the team throws to their running backs and does not have any problems splitting time with RB Andre Ellington.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Johnson is happy, but does he care? If he's motivated, Johnson could provide the team with valuable depth behind Ellington. Fantasy owners shouldn't be falling all over themselves to add Johnson.

Washington quarterback situation is still better than the 2 dysfunctional teams in New York, but maybe not by much.

    Saturday Update

WAS - Robert Griffin's injury not believed to be severe
Source: The Washington Post - Mike Jones

Updating previous reports, Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III's injury (concussion) is not believed to be severe, and it's possible he could play next week, according to a source.

Good news for Griffin here. Let's hope he can see a few less hits in the next game.

DAL - Dallas expected to have top RBs Sunday

    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Dallas Cowboys RBs Joseph Randle (oblique), Darren McFadden (hamstring) and Lance Dunbar (ankle) are all expected to receive some playing time during the second preseason game Sunday, Aug. 23, according to owner/general manager Jerry Jones.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is quick turnaround for Randle after reportedly aggravating his oblique injury yesterday, This will be our first simulation of this new look Dallas backfield, and we'll be watching closely. Also note that it's Jerry Jones saying Randle will be ready. Coach Jason Garrett said Randle is "day to day". Stay tuned.

HOU - Houston not ready to name starting QB

    Source: HoustonTexans.com - Deepi Sidhu

Houston Texans QBs Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett have need competing for the starting quarterback job, but head coach Bill O'Brien wants to see them play more before making a decision. 'I need to see a little bit more and I want to give Ryan a chance to start a game, and put some more thought into it. Then make a decision at some point whether it's next week or the week after. At some point, we'll make a decision,' O'Brien said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Both quarterbacks (and even Tom Savage) looked good against the 49ers in Week 1 of the preseason, which might be more about the state of the San Francisco defense than the state of the Houston quarterback situation. This pass offense could power DeAndre Hopkins to near WR1 numbers, but that's only because he's a high wattage bulb.

BUF - Buffalo may wait on QB decision

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Rodak

Buffalo Bills QBs Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor and EJ Manuel are still competing for the starting quarterback job, but head coach Rex Ryan said the team may not announce the starter until Week 1. 'This will probably play out,' Ryan said. 'Indianapolis might not know who the quarterback is until we play them. We may know, but they may not know.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Taylor was impressive enough last night to make the Bills think long and hard about starting Cassel unless he gives them some sense of security via his play next week. The blueprint of this team makes Taylor the better fit for their defense/running game-based angle of attack.

BUF - Buffalo optimistic about RB LeSean McCoy

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Rodak

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy (hamstring) injured his hamstring in practice earlier this week, but head coach Rex Ryan is 'cautiously optimistic' that the running back will return in time for Week 1 against the Indianapolis Colts. The team didn't reveal the results of McCoy's MRI exam, but Ryan said that McCoy's hamstring was intact and hadn't separated from the bone.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The key to whether to start McCoy in his nice week 1 matchup vs the Colts is whether he practices in the week leading up to the game. Ryan's words aren't nearly as important as McCoy's actions, or lack of actions on the practice field.

CHI - Former GM has harsh words for QB Jay Cutler

Source: Chicago Sun-Times - Rick Morrissey

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler lacks poise, according to former general manager Jerry Angelo. 'He's not comfortable reading defenses and consequently locks on to a favorite or predetermined target that may or may not be the right choice,' Angelo said. 'The less he's asked to see the better he is.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Also, water is wet, the sky is up and pain hurts. The league has long known that Cutler seems to fall apart in tough situations, and given that Brandon Marshall is gone, while rookie Kevin White is hurt (and potentially heading to injured reserve), he seems short on toys, which could mean short on patience. We'd rank him as a mid to late range QB2 this season with some lingering concerns about the offense.

CLE - QB Johnny Manziel looking to impress

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel said he is looking to make an impression on the coaching staff with his performances this preseason. 'I'm still going out trying to play my best and make an impression,' Manziel said. 'That's what I want to do. I want to have these guys go into the film tomorrow and turn on the tape and say, 'This guy's really doing things right and this guy's really fighting hard to pick things up and make some plays.''
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Manziel probably won't start Week 1 without a Josh McCown injury or implosion, but there's no doubt that he has slowed down his fall from grace, if not reversed this. His legs and derring-do make Manziel an interesting streaming and DFS option if he does eventually become the starter this year.

CAR - RB Cameron Artis-Payne having strong camp

    Source: NFL.com - Marc Sessler

Carolina Panthers RB Cameron Artis-Payne has been having a strong training camp and could receive some carries this season. Artis-Payne has shown good power and agility during preseason games but averaged only 3.0 yards per carry in the first preseason game with four of his carries going for two yards or fewer.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Artis-Payne was considered the most likely backup to Jonathan Stewart when he was drafted earlier this year. Brandon Wegher has been building some momentum, but consider Artis-Payne the handcuff to the oft-injured Stewart if you feel the need to handcuff.

DET - RB Zach Zenner performing well

    Source: NFL.com - Marc Sessler

Detroit Lions RB Zach Zenner has shown good vision and balance during preseason games with the ability to gain extra yards. Zenner is competing for a roster spot during training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If Joique Bell isn't ready for the regular season or the veteran breaks down, Zenner looks like the best inside runner the Lions have. He has to force them to carry only two quarterbacks or release George Winn, who is good on special teams, but so far his play is on track to do that. He's a waiver wire speed dial name.

WAS - RB Matt Jones has solid outing

    Source: NFL.com - Marc Sessler

Washington Redskins RB Matt Jones showed balance, speed and the ability to break to the outside during the team's second preseason game Thursday, Aug. 20.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones size and footwork combination was stunning on at least one run and he looked like a potential threat to play on more than just passing downs. He should be a late round target and ding against Alfred Morris's value.

SD - RB Melvin Gordon expected to sit Saturday

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken

San Diego Chargers RB Melvin Gordon (ankle) is not expected to participate in the second preseason game Saturday, Aug. 22, even though he participated in practice Thursday, Aug. 19, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gordon was unimpressive in Week 1 of the preseason and won't the bad taste out of the minds of fantasy owners this weekend. His stock is falling.

CLE - QB Josh McCown jams finger

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown (finger) jammed his right ring finger in a preseason game against the Buffalo Bills Thursday, Aug. 20. X-rays were negative, and he said he is unsure if he will undergo an MRI.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McCown is supposedly still the starter, but if his and Johnny Manziel's performances don't change from the second preseason game, we might see Manziel sooner than later.

WAS - TE Derek Carrier acquired
Source: Sacramento Bee - Matt Barrows
San Francisco 49ers TE Derek Carrier was acquired by the Washington Redskins Friday, Aug. 21, in exchange for a conditional fifth-round draft choice.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Carrier is quite the athlete, with a 4.5 40, 38" vertical and ridiculous quickness/agility times (4.08 SS 6.65 three cone) for a 6'3" 240 pound tight end. He was behind Vernon Davis in San Francisco, but he'll get a chance for significant playing time in Washington.

Eli is still a better option by far than anyone on Washington's roster.

Makes more sense now. I'd say all 3 are equally bad groups.

    Sunday Update

BUF - WR Sammy Watkins taking part in practice

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (glute) is participating in practice Saturday, Aug. 22.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Watkins has superstar talent, but the quarterback situation in Buffalo leaves a lot to be desired. We like him as a WR3, and fantasy owners are taking him off the board around that mark. His current ADP is WR26 (5.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

TB - QB Jameis Winston strong in practice

    Source: ESPN.com - Pat Yasinskas

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston completed 16 of his 20 pass attempts in 11-on-11 drills and seven of his eight passes in 7-on-7 drills during practice Saturday, Aug. 22.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He's coming along but remember to keep expectations mellow. His offensive line is still a big old mess. We see him as no more than a QB3 this season.

CLE - QB Josh McCown's finger checks out

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown (finger) won't miss any time after doctors checked out his finger and determined there were no problems, head coach Mike Pettine said Friday, Aug. 21.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That doesn't matter all that much, since McCown looked as awful as usual the last time out. Johnny Manziel has looked a little better but still appears short of ready to start. We wouldn't draft any of the Cleveland quarterbacks this year in redraft.

BUF - QB Matt Cassel back in mix

Source: The Buffalo News - Tyler Dunne

Buffalo Bills QB Matt Cassel was working with the first-team offense Saturday, Aug. 22.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rex Ryan is doing Rex Ryan things, which means you will get no clarity on this until Week 1 in all likelihood. As we have said many times, we would avoid all three of the quarterbacks vying for the job, with the winner as no more than a QB3, and a shaky one at that. Save the headaches (and the Tylenol) and avoid this.

BUF - Several key Bills return to practice

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (hamstring) and WRs Sammy Watkins (glute), Robert Woods (hip) and Marcus Easley (knee) all returned to practice Saturday, Aug. 22.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bills need them on the field for Week 1 more than Preseason Week 2, but it is good to see them back in action. The Bills plan to run the ball a ton, so they'll need Jackson, though not as much as in the past. We see him as an RB4 right now, as long as LeSean McCoy stays healthy. With the mess at quarterback, Watkins sits as a low-end WR2 or a solid WR3. That's almost totally because of his ability though, so if the quarterbacks start being productive, he may end up more so as well. Easley isn't worth rostering, as he is too far down the depth chart.

BUF - WR Percy Harvin will play Week 1

Source: WGR Sports Radio 550 - Joe Buscaglia

Buffalo Bills WR Percy Harvin (hip) will be ready for the regular season opener, according to head coach Rex Ryan.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We don't expect much from Harvin, who is a WR5 or WR6 at best. The Bills' quarterback position is a hot mess and even when he was on a winning team, Harvin has had issues with his teammates, so we're also not sold on him not imploding during the season. This whole offense seems like it's set to crash at the starting line.

BUF - Buffalo could keep three QBs
    Source: NFL.com - Jeremy Bergman
Buffalo Bills QBs Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor and EJ Manuel could all be on the Bills' final roster, according to head coach Rex Ryan. Ryan said there is a high possibility that the Bills could keep all three quarterbacks, adding that Cassel, Taylor and Manuel would all receive playing time in their next preseason game.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Unless Ryan is trolling us and he's looking to keep Matt Simms, it appears the Bills aren't totally giving up on EJ Manuel. That's not to say he'll be starting anytime soon though. And really, we'd still avoid this mess. Taylor is at least intriguing but too unproven to rely on for fantasy purposes. Matt Cassel is aggressively mediocre. And the offensive line is shaky. Despite some good weapons in the passing game, we day pass on them.

DET - RB Zach Zenner open to playing special teams
    Source: ESPN.com - Michael Rothstein
Detroit Lions RB Zach Zenner said he is willing to play on special teams in order to make the final roster. 'I didn't expect to come in, as an undrafted guy, and start getting the ball 30 times a game,' Zenner said. 'That's just not how the NFL works. I expected that. I was prepared to make an impact on special teams and that's what I've been preparing to do.' Zenner is competing with RB George Winn for a roster spot.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Keep an eye on this situation. Zenner is a one-speed back who can work well as a receiver out of the backfield. He has natural instincts for running the ball, and his efficient style means he doesn't lose a lot of yards.
