NFL Player News - Week of June 29th

MIN - RB Adrian Peterson working out

    Source: ESPN.com - Ben Goessling

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson has been working out with RB Jerick McKinnon and WR Mike Wallace since offseason workouts ended.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

You like to hear this, especially in the cases of McKinnon and Wallace. Peterson's workout ethic is pretty epic, so hopefully that will rub off on both players. McKinnon is a guy to watch, as there is a chance Peterson may be closing out his time in Minnesota, and McKinnon could be his eventual replacement. For this year, McKinnon is no more than a handcuff for Peterson, perhaps an RB4. Wallace was a bit of a stiff in Miami, but could do well in Minnesota if he applies himself. We see him as a WR3 right now, although his ceiling and floor are both a bit beholden to the development of Teddy Bridgewater. Peterson is, naturally a solid RB1.

DET - RB Ameer Abdullah just wants to contribute

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions RB Ameer Abdullah is just hoping to contribute to the team during his rookie season in 2015. 'Offensively, I feel like I can go in there and I can help out the team, but if that's not my calling for this year, definitely special teams. If that's not my calling this year, I'm going to be the best scout player in the country,' said Abdullah.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's a crowded backfield in Detroit. Right now the pecking order is Joique Bell, Theo Riddick and Abdullah, but we wouldn't be shocked if Abdullah had a significant role by the end of the season. Right now, Abdullah is ranked by us at about an RB4 level, while Bell is a low-end RB2 or a solid RB3. Interestingly, both players have an ADP in the sixth round right now, which means people are pulling the trigger on Adbullah very early.

NYJ - WR Devin Smith struggling to adjust

Source: NJ Advance Media - Dom Cosentino

New York Jets WR Devin Smith struggled to adjust to the multiple spots and routes he had to learn to run during offseason workouts, according to wide receivers coach Karl Dorrell.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This isn't a huge shock, though the Jets are likely disappointed since they were thinking he might steal targets from Jeremy Kerley. This is why we don't bet on rookie wide receivers in fantasy football though - the learning curve is very steep even for the best of them. Right now we see Smith as no better than a WR6 and he's going undrafted according to recent ADP polls.

CLE - Former QB praises QB Johnny Manziel

    Source: NFL.com - Conor Orr

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel is trending in the right direction, former QB Elvis Grbac said. 'It's obviously a learning experience,' Grbac said. 'I think he's going in the right direction. He's on the right path. I think it'll be somewhat of a rude awakening the first couple games of the season and he will have to adjust.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

I'm not sure if Grbac saw last season, but I think Manziel's already had a fairly "rude awakening". We see McCown as the guy there for now but here are our detailed stat projections for the entire team.

IND - WR Donte Moncrief could be returner

    Source: Colts.com - Kevin Bowen

Indianapolis Colts WR Donte Moncrief is a candidate to return kicks this season, according to special teams coach Tom McMahon.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Colts wide receivers corps is a bit stacked right now, so getting Moncrief on the field for returns makes a ton of sense. With Andre Johnson and T.Y. Hilton in the lineup, it's possible Moncrief could end up with a lot less targets. So the Colts would naturally try to utilize his abilities in other ways. This helps GMs a little bit in leagues that give you points for returns but he's still no more than a WR5.

    Tuesday Update

SEA - QB Russell Wilson wants to stay put?
    Source: Madison.com - Dennis Punzel
Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson said the goal is to remain in Seattle for 'a really, really long time' when asked about his contract situation at the Russell Wilson Passing Academy Saturday, June 27.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The reports of "Wilson's outta here" have been quite overblown. Do things seem dire right now in contract negotiations? Yeah, a bit--but things change quickly in the NFL. The Seahawks found a franchise-caliber quarterback in the third round of the 2012 NFL draft, and they've been able to build a champion due to his small salary. Now, it's time to pay up...and we still think Seattle finds a way to keep him around with a new long-term contract.

DEN - QB Peyton Manning dealing with changes

Source: NFL Network - Albert Breer

Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning has been forced to deal with a new head coach, a new offensive coordinator, less practice time and more rest during offseason practices, new offensive linemen, a new starting tight end in TE Owen Daniels and not being able to practice with star WR Demaryius Thomas yet.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The whole offseason is about change with Manning...and that could lead to better things with the Broncos--but perhaps not for fantasy owners. Manning is going to be running a more balanced system in 2015 with less emphasis on the passing game. Demaryius Thomas could see 100 catches again this year, but expect Emmanuel Sanders (101 catches in 2014) to drop to about 75 catches in 2015. Manning should be a low-end QB1 for fantasy owners this season.

NYJ - WR Brandon Marshall rejuvenated?

Source: NFL Network - Albert Breer

New York Jets WR Brandon Marshall has been a positive influence since joining the Jets this offseason. Marshall has shown his athletic ability that has given him success in previous seasons and he has been a good teammate in the locker room as well. Additionally, Marshall has connections with new head coach Todd Bowles, who was part of the Dolphins' coaching staff when Marshall played in Miami.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Marshall is on yet another team with the expectations of being the top receiver. He should provide Geno Smith with a quality veteran target in 2015, and fantasy owners should consider Marshall around where they always do. He's a WR2 with WR1 upside in certain matchups.

PHI - QB Sam Bradford to be ready for training camp?

Source: NFL Network - Albert Breer

Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford (knee) is expected to be in the final phase of his rehabilitation from a torn anterior cruciate ligament once training camp begins. Bradford's second ACL tear in as many seasons will require more time to recover and the Eagles may not have a grasp on how ready he is to play before the regular season begins.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bradford/Foles trade was more than a bit odd. First, they have to pay around $11 million more for Bradford. Second, Bradford isn't healthy (kind of a big deal). Finally, there's a question about his remaining commitment to the game after he reportedly considered retirement after yet another knee injury. Bradford is accurate on short-to-intermediate routes, but his lack of durability has crushed his pro career. We're not certain things all of a sudden turn around now that he's in Philly.

MIA - QB Ryan Tannehill showing leadership

    Source: NFL.com - Conor Orr

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill considers himself a big leader in the Dolphins' organization. WR Kenny Stills said Tannehill has put the team on his shoulders and is letting them know that everyone must work hard every day to be successful.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Tannehill took a big step forward last year, finishing as the 9th-best fantasy quarterback. This offseason, the Dolphins have put better weapons around him with the hopes that he's going to improve even more. Another 4,000 yards passing this year is quite possible, and Tannehill should throw 25-30 touchdowns in 2015. This makes him a low-end QB1 for fantasy owners.

SD - WR Keenan Allen losing weight

    Source: ESPN.com - Eric D. Williams

San Diego Chargers WR Keenan Allen said he's been losing weight in order to play faster this season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A lighter and faster Allen is a more dangerous Allen. If healthy, he's got the ability to be one of the best receivers in the game today. His current ADP is WR21 (4.12) in 12-team PPR leagues, and he could easily outperform that draft slot as the Chargers top receiving threat.

MIN - RB Adrian Peterson still confident

Source: St. Paul Pioneer Press - Chris Tomasson

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson still believes he's the best running back in the NFL. This was in response to Peterson being named the 62nd best player on the NFL Network's top 100 players list.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Peterson should be able to pick up where he left off after missing most of 2014. Fantasy owners should look at him the same as they've always done--he should be a top-5 pick in most every draft out there.

JAX - WR Marqise Lee to be No. 3 WR?

    Source: The Florida Times-Union - Ryan O'Halloran

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Marqise Lee is slated to start behind WRs Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns, according to Ryan O'Halloran of The Florida Times Union.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lee was underwhelming as a rookie last year. He'll need to show better consistency as a pro if he's ever going to play up to his potential....but first, he needs to get healthy. Lee suffered a knee injury before OTAs and his status for training camp is up in the air.

DAL - RB Darren McFadden healthy, happy where he is

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden said he's excited to be with the Cowboys and feels like he's a rookie again. McFadden also said the injured hamstring that caused him to miss time this offseason is feeling great.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McFadden should be happy where he is because of that monstrous offensive line in front of him. He's competing for the starting job with Joseph Randle in training camp. If McFadden stays healthy (always an issue), then he'll be able to put up a good fight for that job.

MIN - OC high on WR Charles Johnson

    Source: ESPN.com - Ben Goessling

Minnesota Vikings WR Charles X. Johnson appears to have everything it takes to produce in the NFL, according to offensive coordinator Norv Turner. 'He's got great work ethic, and he's a big, strong guy. He's a 218-pound receiver that can run. He's got everything you need to be a productive player in this league,' Turner said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners should be keeping an eye on Johnson in training camp and the preseason. Turner believes Johnson has completely recovered from the knee surgery he had last offseason. Johnson has been working at split end in three-receiver sets during offseason workouts. His current ADP is WR36 (7.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

CAR - Big role for WR Devin Funchess?

    Source: ESPN.com - David Newton

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess impressed during offseason workouts and could have a big role in 2015. He played all three receiver positions, and his 6-foot-4 frame could create mismatches.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Panthers are hoping that Funchess can develop into a quality starting wide receiver opposite Kelvin Benjamin. The two have similar skill sets, but Benjamin was much further along as a wide receiver when he came out of Florida State last year. Funchess will body catch too many passes, and he lacks the "my ball" mentality that Benjamin has. We're intrigued by him as a developmental player but he'll probably only catch about 40 passes with a few touchdowns in 2015.

    Wednesday Update

DAL - No lead candidate at RB in Dallas?

Source: The Dallas Morning News - Jon Machota

Dallas Cowboys RBs Darren McFadden, Joseph Randle and Lance Dunbar are still battling each other for the starting running back position, according to running backs coach Gary Brown. 'I can't say who is going to be the lead dog right now, but those guys are going to compete and we're going to do what's necessary to win games,' Brown said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brown was a pretty good running back for a brief time during his NFL career, and now he's in charge of one of the best rushing attacks in the league. No matter who is the starter, they'll be fantasy relevant behind that monstrous offensive line. We feel Randle ends up as the guy who comes out on top in this battle in training camp.

DAL - RB Lance Dunbar to have receiving role?

Source: The Dallas Morning News - Jon Machota

Dallas Cowboys RB Lance Dunbar is expected to have the biggest impact of any of the running backs in the passing game, according to Jon Machota of The Dallas Morning News.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll have to see how this Cowboys backfield shakes out, but we think Dunbar is third in the pecking order. Joseph Randle should win the starting job with Darren McFadden playing as a backup. Even if he's the top receiving back in Dallas, we're projecting Dunbar to get about 25-30 catches in 2015.

SEA - QB Russell Wilson will be ready to play

    Source: NFL.com - Manouk Akopyan

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson said he will be ready to play this season whether he's making $25 million or $1.5 million. Wilson has expressed his desire to stay in Seattle and added that, when the time comes, he will let his play do the talking.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If he made $25 million annually, it would be $3 million per year higher than Aaron Rodgers. The quarterback market is about supply and demand--and there's not enough good QBs out there. It may seem outlandish to predict that price tag for Wilson, but the market could bear that out.

NYJ - Vote of confidence for QB Geno Smith

    Source: NewYorkJets.com - Eric Allen

New York Jets QB Geno Smith is improving year-by-year and has what it takes to be the quarterback of the future for the Jets, according to ESPN's Ron Jaworski. Jaworski said he has seen growth and improvement in Smith each year and that he just needs to perform on a consistent basis.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smith received a vote of confidence from the coaching staff earlier this year when OC Chan Gailey proclaimed that Smith was the starter. He finished last year with a bang (358 yards, three touchdowns), and Smith is hoping to carry that momentum over to this year. Gailey's spread concepts will help Smith look better, but he's nothing more than a low-end QB2 or QB3 for fantasy owners in 2015.

PHI - TE Zach Ertz to see more snaps

    Source: CSNPhilly.com - Geoff Mosher

Philadelphia Eagles TE Zach Ertz is expected to see a sizable jump in snaps this season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is something all fantasy owners need to monitor. Tight end talent is thin, but Ertz could be a solid TE1 for you this season. He's coming off the board at TE7 (7.10) in 12-team PPR leagues at this time. He could outperform that draft position if his snaps increase dramatically.

DET - RB Joique Bell aiming for 1,200 yards

    Source: Mlive.com - Kyle Meinke

Detroit Lions RB Joique Bell is aiming to become the franchise's second running back to rush for 1,000 yards since 2004. 'I'm going to rush for over 1,200 yards,' Bell said. 'That's the minimum. If I do less than that, I'll be surprised. I'll be disappointed. Anything more than that, I wouldn't be surprised at all.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bell certainly has the skill set to get that mark in 2015, but there are some obstacles in his way. First, he's not healthy and there's no telling when he'll be ready to practice. He's coming back from both an Achilles' and knee injury, but the team plans for him to be ready at some point in training camp. Second, Bell is going to be splitting time in 2015. The Lions added electric rookie RB Ameer Abdullah in the 2015 NFL draft, and he's going to challenge Bell for the starting job. Abdullah may be best served as a change-of-pace back, but he's too good to keep on the bench. Bell is a RB3 for fantasy owners if he's the starter, and that role might not be as big as some think because of Abdullah's presence.

SEA - WR Tyler Lockett draws praise

Source: 710 ESPN Seattle - Brady Henderson

Seattle Seahawks WR Tyler Lockett has drawn positive reviews from WR Doug Baldwin, who feels the rookie out of Kansas State is 'going to be an impact player for us right off the bat.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

You could easily make the argument that Lockett is their best wide receiver. He's lightning quick with the ball in his hands, and Lockett is a threat to score anytime he has the rock. He'll likely begin this season as the team's WR3 behind Doug Baldwin and Jermaine Kearse. Throw in tight end Jimmy Graham (likely their top target), and there might not be enough action on a run-heavy team for Lockett to be fantasy relevant in re-draft leagues. However, as a late-round flier he's a perfect addition. Also, dynasty owners should be grabbing and stashing Lockett whenever possible.

SEA - WR Doug Baldwin wants to play special teams

Source: 710 ESPN Seattle - Brady Henderson

Seattle Seahawks WR Doug Baldwin said Monday, June 29, that he wants to contribute more on special teams. 'I want to help out more so on special teams in terms of on kickoff, punt return blocking, Baldwin said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Baldwin is a steady performer for the Seahawks, but he's no more than a WR5/WR6 for fantasy owners in re-draft leagues. We could see him snaring 50 passes with a few touchdowns in 2015. The Seahawks want to run the ball early and often, plus the addition of superstar tight end Jimmy Graham means fewer targets for wide receivers like Baldwin.

CAR - WR Devin Funchess feels he is healthy

Source: The Detroit News - Josh Katzenstein

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess (toe) cited a toe injury for the reason his numbers were disappointing in his final season at the University of Michigan. 'We never got to see the full Devin Funchess at Michigan because I did play one season at wide receiver, and I was battling through an injury,' Funchess said Monday, June 29. Funchess said his toe injury was a torn ligament with some cracked bones and ruptured cartilage.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It wasn't just the injury, it was Funchess looking lost on the field at times. He's big, but Funchess doesn't win at the point of the catch with consistency. We'll see if he can flourish as the Panthers WR2 this year opposite Kelvin Benjamin.

SD - RB Danny Woodhead looks to be healthy

    Source: ESPN.com - Eric D. Williams

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead (ankle) missed 13 games last season due to a broken ankle, but he appeared fast and healthy in offseason work.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

An important note for fantasy owners here, especially PPR league players. Woodhead feels good after returning from the serious ankle injury he suffered early last season. His quickness and ability to make defenders miss in the open field is going to be utilized often when he's on the field as a change-of-pace back behind rookie Melvin Gordon. Woodhead should snare about 50 passes this year, and PPR owners should consider him a RB4 and occasional flex play in 2015.

TB - WR Mike Evans feels he was held back

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Tom Pelissero

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Mike Evans is expected to play more on an island in 2015 as the 'X' receiver in Tampa Bay's new offense, which is the same role offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter created for Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones during Koetter's time with that organization. He said Monday, June 29, that the QB carousell of Josh McCown and Mike Glennon last year held him back, too, so he is excited about a potential breakout with QB Jameis Winston.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

All the people who doubt Evans can best the numbers he posted last year need to read this story. Yes, the 12 touchdown receptions could be difficult to duplicate--and touchdowns are always more difficult to project. However, he could easily get at least 10 touchdowns this year with more receptions and more yards. Winston is a serious upgrade and a more confident passer than McCown and Glennon combined. It's lazy analysis to say Evans will suffer in 2015 because of his rookie quarterback.

    Thursday Update

NYJ - No vacation for QB Geno Smith

Source: NJ Advance Media - Dom Cosentino

New York Jets QB Geno Smith said he is already focusing on preparing his body and mind for the regular season, and the next step is to work out with WR Brandon Marshall.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Newsflash Geno - if you don't show you can produce at this level, you'll have plenty of time for vacation. Marshall can be a huge asset, Smith would be wise to be doing all he can to further the chemistry with his WR.

STL - QB Nick Foles instilling confidence

    Source: NFL.com - Conor Orr

St. Louis Rams QB Nick Foles' command of the huddle is something that has been missing from the quarterback position in recent years, according to TE Jared Cook. 'Hopefully, he can make all of us better,' Cook said. 'This is something we've needed the past few years -- somebody to fill the mold, step in, grab the ram by the horns and say, 'Let's go, guys! This is our time!''

Foles is certainly an upgrade from the likes of Austin Davis and Kellen Clemens, but with a questionable offensive line and WR/TE group that lacks star power, this team is still going to be run-heavy when they are successful at controlling the game and inconsistent when they are not. Foles has a ton of motivation playing for a long-term extension or free agent value depending on the Rams approach to his future, but there probably isn't any fantasy profit to be had here.

MIN - RB Adrian Peterson has nose for end zone
    Source: NFL
Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson has score double-digit touchdowns in every season of his eight-year NFL career. Last season is the exception as he only played in one game due to allegation of child abuse. When Peterson has played at least 12 games, he has scored at least 10 touchdowns. From 2007 to 2013, Peterson averaged 12.29 touchdowns per season.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Peterson has taught us to not let typical human performances be the bounds of our expectations when it comes to his production. He hasn't had a good QB since Brett Favre in 2009, when Peterson scored 18 rushing touchdowns and set career highs in receptions and receiving yardage. He's worth considering at #1 overall.

    WAS - Robert Griffin critiqued
Source: The Washington Post - Scott Allen
Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III's decision-making, fundamentals, footwork and his inability to find open receivers are all reasons why Griffin isn't good enough to be successful in the NFL, in the opinion of ESPN NFL analyst Mark Brunell.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The franchise seems reluctant but resigned to starting Griffin to begin the season, and well, we'll see where it goes from there. He doesn't seem to have the support of head coach Jay Gruden, and only the repeated failures of once coveted backup Kirk Cousins has kept Griffin atop the depth chart. Colt McCoy could be the caretaker for this offense again yet. All of it adds up to every Washington fantasy option inspiring little enthusiasm at current ADP.

RG3 was great when he was just playing and didn't receive all the coaching. Seems the more coaching he gets, the worse he gets. Too many things going on in his head.

I think he still hasn't gotten the knee injury out of his head and he 2nd guesses himself way too often in the pocket.

    Sunday Update

DAL - WR Dez Bryant deal coming soon?

    Source: FOXSportsSouthwest.com - Mike Fisher

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant impending long-term deal may be announced after the July 4 weekend, according to Mike Fisher of CBS Dallas-Fort Worth. The comfort level in the negotiation process has supposedly increased of late. Both sides have until Wednesday, July 15, to agree on a long-term deal.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Deadlines spur action. Either way bet on Bryant to be ready to play and signed on the dotted line for at least one year come Week 1.

CLE - WR Dwayne Bowe excited for opportunity

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Cleveland Browns WR Dwayne Bowe said he's excited to be on a new team and in a new atmosphere. He added that he wants to fill the shoes of standout WR Josh Gordon, who is serving a season-long suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy. Bowe said it's his job to replace Gordon in Cleveland's offense and he believes he can do just that. Bowe implied that he'd like to score more touchdowns this season after not scoring any with the Kansas City Chiefs last year. 'I got us down in scoring range and with our offense, it was based on running back to the tight end and my job was to play football,' Bowe said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bowe may be excited, but fantasy owners need to proceed with caution when considering Bowe in drafts--even late. The career underachiever has done little to give fantasy owners confidence that he'll actually play up to his potential. The QB situation in Cleveland leaves a lot to be desired as well. We're recommending avoiding Bowe unless he's a WR6, late-round flier in your league.

JAX - QB Blake Bortles given homework

    Source: The Florida Times-Union - Ryan O'Halloran

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles was given a checklist by offensive coordinator Greg Olson before the Jaguars six-week break in offseason programs. 'A lot of it is him homing in on the protections,' Olson said. 'When he gets back here, we want him to be completely clear on what he's doing at the line of scrimmage in terms of that,' said Olson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bortles looked lost at times last year and needs to be more in tune with the chaos around him to harness what second-year #1 WR Allen Robinson and big ticket free agent tight end Julius Thomas bring to the table as passing game weapons. The team will assume more of a "bullyball" mentality with additions on the offensive line and second-round RB TJ Yeldon, but in the end the team will go as far as Bortles can take them.

NYJ - No pressure for QB Geno Smith?

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

New York Jets QB Geno Smith said he doesn't feel any pressure heading into training camp. 'I feel like we have a lot of room for improvement, but I love the way we're working and competing,' Smith said. 'To have guys around me that are so, so good, it takes all the pressure off of me.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smith shouldn't feel any pressure because he is still slated to start despite playing among the worst ball of any QB in the league the last two years. With Brandon Marshall and Chan Gailey, Smith will be out of excuses if he can't get it together this year. Ryan Fitzpatrick, who had his best years with Gailey in Buffalo, is waiting in the wings if Smith falters.

BUF - QB EJ Manuel afraid to cut it loose?

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel was called 'timid' by former FS Ronde Barber. He holds the ball,' Barber said. 'He's scared to deliver it when he needs to.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Tyrod Taylor is in line to possibly start not because of his ability, but because of the lack of ability from EJ Manuel and Matt Cassel. This is not good news for anyone in this offense.

TB - QB Jameis Winston's confidence a plus

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston has the mentality needed to succeed in the NFL, former FS Ronde Barber said. 'I've played against guys that have supreme confidence in themselves and their ability to make plays,' Barber said. 'You can already see it. He has no fear letting the ball go.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That should surely benefit Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson, who are big receivers who win at the catch point. Evans in particular has a higher ceiling with an aggressive QB like Winston. He could surpass his already astonishing rookie numbers.

GB - TE Andrew Quarless arrested

Source: Miami New Times - Tim Elfrink

Green Bay Packers TE Andrew Quarless was arrested early Saturday, July 4, for allegedly firing a gun into the ground, according to police. Quarless supposedly was involved in a fight and fled the scene, but was apprehended. The tight end has been charged with discharging a firearm in public.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's not good. Quarless is facing up to a year in jail for the first-degree misdemeanor (in Florida). The league is going to take any arrest involving gun play quite seriously, so a suspension could be a possibility once the legal process has been exhausted. That might take some time, so Quarless could be okay--for now. Fantasy owners are avoiding the Green Bay tight end anyway, and this incident isn't going to improve his standing in fantasy circles.

ATL - RB Tevin Coleman the frontrunner to start?

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Steven Ruiz

Atlanta Falcons RB Tevin Coleman should end up starting Week 1 ahead of RB Devonta Freeman, according to Steven Ruiz of USA TODAY Sports, because Coleman has top-end speed and was picked by the coaching staff.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Freeman and Coleman are both going to have sizable roles no matter who the ceremonial starter is for Week 1. Freeman will get more work on passing downs and in no huddle situations, while Coleman should see more early down work. Both backs will have the chance to increase their role with success, but don't expect a 300+ touch back to emerge this year in Atlanta. Both are going in the fifth round or later, with Freeman usually going 2-4 rounds after Coleman.

TEN - QB Marcus Mariota's accuracy helping WRs

    Source: ESPN.com - Paul Kuharsky

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota will help make the receivers more dynamic because of his 'unbelievable accuracy,' according to WR Harry Douglas. 'If you have an accurate quarterback, it allows us to get more yards after that catch,' Douglas said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mariota's accuracy was apparent in the context and structure of a play, but not as much outside of the structure of plays. Big receivers like Justin Hunter and Dorial Green-Beckham don't need a hyperaccurate QB, but they do need one that is willing to take chances and throw them open. Even if you are very optimistic about Mariota, there should be some rough spots this year as he transitions to more pro style elements in his offense and playing without a top-end running game and tempo advantage.

Dwayne Bowe is excited for opportunity to be #1 wr? Has he looked at Browns qb depth chart? They don't have a real qb on roster.
