NFL Player News - Week of January 26th

CLE - WR Josh Gordon fails drug test
    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter
Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon has reportedly failed another drug test and will be subject to a one-year banishment, according to multiple league sources.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Oh man, here we go again. Gordon is a fantastic talent, but his inability to stay clean has marred his NFL career. We wouldn't be surprised to see the Browns cut Gordon.

MIA - Miami want to re-sign TE Charles Clay
Source: The Miami Herald - Barry Jackson
Miami Dolphins impending free-agent TE Charles Clay is a player that the Dolphins would like to re-sign and are expected to offer him a contract in the next few weeks.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
It's a wise move for the Dolphins. Clay is a versatile player who can be a dangerous asset on the field. Last year, Clay had 58 catches for 605 yards and three touchdowns in 14 games. The Dolphins also have an emerging talent in Dion Sims, so don't expect them to break the bank to keep Clay. He'll have to sign a team-friendly deal to stick around in 2015.

JAX - QB Blake Bortles to work out with receivers
    Source: The Florida Times-Union - Ryan O'Halloran
Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles said he plans to have a passing camp in Southern California in February with his wide receivers, tight ends and running backs in order to work on their chemistry.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We like the motivation of this young quarterback. Bortles did not improve much as a rookie, but he gained valuable experience as a 14-game starter. Working with his receivers should help them have better chemistry on the field this next season.

NFL - Marcus Mariota may not throw at Combine
Source: Honolulu Star Advertiser - Dave Reardon
University of Oregon QB Marcus Mariota (shoulder) may opt out of throwing at the NFL Combine after spraining the acromioclavicular joint in his right shoulder during the National Championship Game.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Not throwing at the Combine--and not showing up to the Senior Bowl (he was eligible to play)--could hurt Mariota's draft stock a bit. That being said, it's not going to crush his value completely. We believe Mariota will still be an option for the first overall pick, and he may not fall farther than sixth (New York Jets).

STL - Begin contract talks with WR Kenny Britt
Source: St. Louis Post-Dispatch - Jim Thomas
St. Louis Rams WR Kenny Britt and his agents have started contract talks with the team. Britt, who has been in St. Louis just one season, indicated he wanted to remain with the club past 2014.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
It's a good move for both sides. Britt still has fantastic talent, he just needs to stay healthy in order to play up to his potential. The Rams don't have great depth at the position, and they could really use a wideout like Britt in 2015. Now, they just need a quarterback to go along with him.

STL - Keeping eye on Shane Carden
Source: St. Louis Post-Dispatch - Jim Thomas
East Carolina QB Shane Harden is being looked at by the St. Louis Rams in the lead-up to the 2015 NFL Draft.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Harden was at the 2015 Reese's Senior Bowl, but he failed to impress. Our very own Cecil Lammey and Matt Waldman report that Harden struggled with accuracy and decision making during the week of practice. Harden is likely to be a fourth- or fifth-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft. His upside is that of a career backup. The Rams need to aim quite a bit higher.

BAL - Met with Sammie Coates
Source: The Baltimore Sun - Aaron Wilson
Auburn WR Sammie Coates met with Baltimore Ravens team officials during Senior Bowl week in Mobile, Ala.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Coates was very impressive during the week of practice at the Senior Bowl. He's incredibly fast, and on film was a great deep threat at Auburn. However, at the Senior Bowl Coates showed the ability to run crisp routes and gain separation against different types of coverage. He could be a late first- or early second-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

NE - QB Tom Brady improved out of pocket
    Source: ProFootballFocus.com - Steve Palazzolo
New England Patriots QB Tom Brady completed 12 of his 24 pass attempts on scramble plays outside of the pocket this year for 198 yards and two scores. Last year, he was 0-of-4 on similar plays.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
With the Patriots strong ground game, it's wise to move Brady around from time to time. New England has benefited from the play-action passing their rushing attack sets up.

Wonder what the line on him is for never playing another NFL game. That's the side I would be on.

    Tuesday Update

CLE - WR Josh Gordon tested positive for alcohol

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon tested positive for alcohol, according to sources, and his failed test will subject him to a possible one-year suspension. Gordon caught 24 passes for 303 yards in five games last year after leading the NFL with 1,646 yards in 14 games in 2013.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gordon has trouble staying clean, and that's what has held him back as a pro. When he's not suspended, Gordon can dominate on the field. This newest infraction could lead the Browns to part ways with the talented-but-oft-suspended receiver.

NYG - Odell Beckham said he was never healthy
Source: New York Post - Bart Hubbuch
New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. (hamstring) said he played this season with two tears in his right hamstring, which never fully healed.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Wow, just wow. Beckham was phenomenal during his rookie season, and we're excited about what the future holds with this top prospect. He missed four games to start the season, but Beckham still finished with 91 catches for 1,305 yards and 12 touchdowns.

ARI - Dick LeBeau will not join Arizona staff
Source: The Arizona Republic - Kent Somers
Former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau will not be joining the Arizona Cardinals coaching staff, a source said Sunday, Jan. 25.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
LeBeau isn't joining any team West of the Mississippi according to reports. This leaves the Cardinals still searching for a defensive coordinator. Head coach Bruce Arians is still expected to fill the defensive coordinator vacancy from within the organization.

CHI - QB Jay Cutler happy with coaching addition
    Source: ChicagoFootball.com - Kevin Fishbain
Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler reportedly once touted new quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains to be the quarterbacks coach in 2012. The two had a 'strong, personal relationship.'
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The addition of Loggains suggests the Bears are giving Cutler all that he needs to succeed in 2015. It might be a last hurrah for the talented but underachieving quarterback. If Cutler struggles this season under new head coach John Fox, we could see the Bears going in a different direction at QB for 2016. Currently, there's over $19 million in dead money on Cutler's contract. However, after this year that number falls to just $3 million. It's shaping up to be a make-or-break year for Cutler.

NE - QB Tom Brady clutch in last quarter of postseason

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady has led eight playoff game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime in his career, more than any other player.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Tom Brady is clutch--period. His play has gotten him back to the sixth Super Bowl of his career. Brady could win his fourth Super Bowl title on Sunday, joining Terry Bradshaw (Steelers) and Joe Montana (49ers) as the only starting quarterbacks with as many victories in the big game.

Former Baltimore Ravens quarterbacks coach Rick Dennison was officially hired by the Denver Broncos Monday, Jan. 26, to serve as their offensive coordinator.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Dennison spent four years (2010-13) as Head Coach Gary Kubiak’s offensive coordinator in Houston before being hired in Baltimore last season to coach the team’s quarterbacks. Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco established career highs in passing yards (3,986) and touchdown passes (27) in his lone season under Dennison’s guidance in 2014 while being sacked just 19 times—29 fewer than the previous season.

SEA - S Earl Thomas expects to lean on teammates
Source: The Seattle Times - Bob Condotta
Seattle Seahawks FS Earl Thomas (shoulder) said he won't miss the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots with a dislocated shoulder, but he also admitted that it won't be a normal game for him as he plays through the injury. Thomas is unsure if he'll need to have surgery this offseason for his injury. 'My mindset is I have an opportunity to really trust my teammates,' Thomas said. 'This is the first game I'm going to have to trust them because of my injury. So I really, really, really trust my teammates, and that's what I'm banking on, my teammates doing what they need to do and I need to come through myself.'
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We're expecting Thomas to be limited leading up to the Super Bowl on Sunday. The team won't want to push him too much in practice and re-aggravate the injury.

SEA - Seattle Seahawks struggles against TEs
    Source: ESPN Stats and Information
New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski could cause a problem for the Seattle Seahawks during Super Bowl XLIX, because the Seahawks defense allowed 11 touchdowns to tight ends this season, which was third most in the NFL. Gronkowski led the Patriots in touchdown catches during the regular season.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The weak spot (yes, there is a weak spot) for the Seahawks defense is up the middle. Every team struggles with Rob Gronkowski, but he could be the difference maker for the Patriots offense. His ability to attack the deep middle seam will help open things up for Tom Brady and the passing game.

NYG - Odell Beckham to rest this offseason
    Source: NFL.com - Conor Orr
New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. (hamstring) said he'll need to shut himself down this offseason in order to enter 2015 fully healthy and in great shape. He said he had tears to his semitendinosus and bicep belly of his hamstring this season. 'It's still not right, I'm still working on it,' Beckham said. 'I'm trying to get it 100 percent for next year.'
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Beckham said he played this season with two tears in his right hamstring, which never fully healed. He was still able to put up incredible numbers even though he missed the first four games of the season. Beckham will get a boost with Victor Cruz back on the field in 2015. Defenses won't be able to contend with both, and it should help the Giants have a more robust passing game.

CIN - OLB Vontaze Burfict had microfracture surgery
    Source: ESPN.com - Cole Harvey
Cincinnati Bengals LB Vontaze Burfict (knee) is recovering from microfracture surgery on his left knee, and the surgeon who operated on him is hoping that he will be at full strength in time for training camp. 'I don't see any reason, if this thing heals like we want and we think it will, why he won't be back like he was,' Dr. Neal ElAttrache said. 'Microfracture has a bad connotation, but there are plenty of guys who have come back and been able to play like before. But it's not really news when it works out.' Burfict is expected to heal rapidly since his knee was in good shape structurally.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Knee injuries don't seem quite as scary these days, but microfracture surgery always comes with added concerns. Burfict will be brought along slowly as he deals with this more serious surgery. He'll be on crutches for six weeks before he can start conditioning his knee, and he'll be able to run after three months.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Parmalee and Moore have plenty of experience from their playing days in the NFL. We'll see if the Raiders can add better WRs to the mix for Moore. Parmalee will get to coach one of the most exciting young running backs in the game in Latavius Murray.

JAX - WR Justin Blackmon to return in 2015?
    Source: FOXSports.com - Alex Marvez
Jacksonville Jaguars WR Justin Blackmon has overcome his issues, and plenty of league sources expect him to be back with the team in 2015.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Jaguars aren't counting on Blackmon right now, but if he can play it's a huge bonus. Like Josh Gordon, Blackmon is incredibly talented but had substance-abuse problems. If he's clean, Blackmon will be the best wide receiver on the team and give QB Blake Bortles a quality weapon to throw to. Stay tuned.

Heard something about it be a stinger to the nerve in his elbow. Might not be 100% and still feel some numbness, but shouldn't prevent from playing at a high level. - that's what the guys on the Dallas radio station said.

NO - TE Jimmy Graham ruling out surgery?
Source: The New Orleans Advocate - Darrell Williams
New Orleans Saints TE Jimmy Graham (shoulder) caught three passes for 30 yards and two scores in the Pro Bowl Sunday, Jan. 25, and when asked if his performance would rule out surgery, he said, 'It should, which is really exciting.'
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Graham and the Saints need to get back on the right track in 2015. This shoulder injury slowed him down at times in 2014, and Graham finished with 889 yards receiving. The Saints will be cautious with him as he recovers from this injury without surgery.

    Source: ESPN.com - Coley Harvey
Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton still has offensive coordinator Hue Jackson in his corner, despite Dalton's lackluster performance in 2014 and in the Pro Bowl.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Pro Bowl performance doesn't matter...but it certainly doesn't help his case. Dalton is one of those quarterbacks who is "just" good enough. He'll get you to the postseason, but he'll struggle once there. Rinse, repeat and you have the Bengals in a nutshell over the last four years. We're not expecting drastic changes in 2015.

MIN - NFLPA against RB Adrian Peterson counseling
    Source: ESPN.com - Ben Goessling
Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson was directed by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to meet with a league-assigned psychiatrist following Peterson's suspension. The National Football League Players Association is now crying foul on the commissioner's mandated counseling, arguing that Goodell did not have the power to enforce such a stipulation. The NFLPA said the terms of Peterson's suspension violate the limits of Goodell's power under the collective bargaining agreement.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The NFLPA is standing up for their player here as Commissioner Goodell may have overstepped his bounds. Counseling could certainly help Peterson from a PR standpoint as his image was damaged in 2014. It could also help him just be a better person. Counseling could be court-ordered, but Goodell is not judge and jury here.

NE - QB Tom Brady said he feels 'perfect'
    Source: CBSSports.com - Larry Hartstein
New England Patriots QB Tom Brady has publicly stated he’d like to play well into his 40s and feels perfect after playing his 15th season, but his father Tom Brady Sr. believes it won’t end well with the Patriots. The younger Brady is under contract through 2017, although he’ll turn 40 years old prior to that season. Brady has publicly said he plans on playing until he’s 43 or 44. The 37-year-old quarterback is scheduled to make $12 million in 2015, $8 million in 2016 and $9 million in 2017. His father thinks his son’s determination to keep playing won’t go over well with the Patriots’ brass. “It will end badly,' Brady Sr. told New York Times Magazine. 'It does end badly. And I know that because I know what Tommy wants to do. He wants to play 'til he's 70. ... It's a cold business. And for as much as you want it to be familial, it isn't.'
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Brady goes to many lengths to stay in the best shape he possibly can. Things can change quickly in the NFL, but the way it looks now we could see Brady play at least a couple of more seasons.

NO - QB Drew Brees optimistic about future
    Source: SI.com - Greg Bedard
New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees said 2014 was the most frustrating season of his career, but remained optimistic about the team's future. 'I think we've identified the problems or the things that got us beat or the things that didn't allow us to be as good as we know we can be, and we have the solution to fix it,' Brees said. 'It's going to take a lot of work, but I know we can get it done.'
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We're cautiously optimistic when it comes to Brees' future. It was certainly a down year for Brees in 2014. Touchdown passes were down, and interceptions were up for the veteran quarterback. He also fell short of 5,000 yards passing for the first time in four years--although he was only 48 yards short of that mark. We'll see if Brees can look more like the QB we've become used to in 2015.

The former Texas Longhorn was undrafted in 2011, but he did spend some time with the Saints and the Rams before heading up north. In the CFL, Chiles played for the Toronto Argonauts. He's a good receiver on deep routes, can track the ball well over his shoulder and has agility in the open field. Chiles' game is built on his run-after-the-catch ability and vertical speed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

BUF - QB EJ Manuel will have a clean slate
Source: WGR Sports Radio 550 - Joe Buscaglia
Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel will have a clean slate next season, according to new offensive coordinator Greg Roman. Roman said that Manuel has shown some good things but that his level of consistency needs to be higher.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Bills have yet to give up on Maneul, but 2015 will certainly be a make-or-break season for the young quarterback. We're not expecting much from him, and dynasty owners shouldn't feel they have any sort of value on their roster with Manuel. We'll see if the 2013 first-round pick can turn things around this season.

NE - Seattle looking to shut down Gronk
    Source: NFL.com - Chris Wesseling
New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski is an offensive weapon that the Seattle Seahawks are focused on shutting down during the Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 1. Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll thinks his team matches up well against the All-Pro tight end, though, as LBs K.J. Wright and Bruce Irvin are 'pretty tall and long' and SS Kam Chancellor is 'about as big a strong safety as you can find.' The Seahawks will be focused on not allowing Gronkowski and QB Tom Brady to take over the game.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Yeah, good luck with that. The Seattle defense has a weak spot in the middle, and that's Gronkowski's territory. They'll have to commit at least two defenders to slowing down the superstar tight end....and even that may not prevent him from having a big game. Gronkowksi is a key player to watch on Super Sunday.

Indianapolis Colts special assistant Rob Chudzinski was named the associate head coach Tuesday, Jan. 27.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
A strong move for both sides here. Chudzinski was a special assistant behind Chuck Pagano in 2014, and now he'll continue to work with Andrew Luck and this high-powered passing game. He was getting interest from other teams out there because he's a quality offensive coordinator, but Chudzinski decided that staying with the Colts was his best move.

IND - RB Trent Richardson's guarantee voided
    Source: NationalFootballPost.com - Joel Corry
Indianapolis Colts RB Trent Richardson's one-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team voided the guarantee of a $3,184,062 salary in 2015.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We'll see Richardson appeal this with the NFLPA. If the Colts win, it means they'll be able to release Richardson without paying him the final year of his rookie contract. Richardson was the third-overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft, but his career has been in a tailspin since the Colts gave up a first-round pick for him in 2013. The Colts should be in the market for a running back this offseason either through the draft or free agency.

MIN - QB Teddy Bridgewater bulking up
    Source: Vikings.com - Craig Peters
Minnesota Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater is working on bulking up this offseason. 'We know where he's going to be, what he's going to be doing, in terms of lifting,' offensive coordinator Norv Turner said. 'He's never going to be a real big man, but he's going to be a guy that eventually is 220-225. He played most of the year about 212, so continue to work and get stronger and put on a few more pounds, and he will gradually, but that strength, I don't want people to think I'm talking about getting his arm stronger, no.'
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Part of the reason why Bridgewater fell to the end of the first round last year (besides the ridiculous pro day overanalysis) was his lack of size. Bridgewater had a strong rookie year where he gained plenty of experience and was constantly learning from his mistakes. We're excited about his upside--as we always have been--because he's smart and accurate. Bridgewater can be one of the best in the game if he continues to grow and develop as a passer.

JAX - ILB Paul Posluszny returning to form
    Source: Jaguars.com - John Oehser
Jacksonville Jaguars LB Paul Posluszny (chest) said Monday, Jan. 26, that he is back to lifting after dealing with a torn pectoral muscle last season, and he expects to be 100% when offseason activities begin in April.

The story with Posluszny will always read "what might have been." He's a fantastic athlete who can fly around the field. Posluszny arrives at the ball with natural violence and can be a disruptive player on the defense. Too bad he's almost always banged up. We're hopeful he can stay healthy and shine for the Jaguars defense in 2015.

PHI - TE Zach Ertz to play more in 2015?
    Source: Phillymag.com - Sheil Kapadia
Philadelphia Eagles TE Zach Ertz ranked ninth among tight ends in 2014 with 293 receiving yards out of the slot, but PhillyMag.com's Sheil Kapadia believes Ertz could see more time in the slot next year if WR Jordan Matthews spends more time outside.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We'd like to see more from Ertz going forward. He was targeted 89 times in 2014 as the Eagles struggled to find consistent quarterback play. If they find the right guy to run the offense, Ertz could be a huge part of what they do through the air. In the Chip Kelly system, the tight end is usually the first and primary read after the inside/outside zone fake to the running back.

PHI - WR Jordan Matthews' role to expand?
    Source: Phillymag.com - Sheil Kapadia
Philadelphia Eagles WR Jordan Matthews played 65% of the offensive snaps and ran 92.4% of his routes from the slot in 2014, per Pro FootballFocus.com. That was the role Eagles head coach Chip Kelly envisioned him in when the club drafted him last year. However, according to PhillyMag.com's Sheil Kapadia, the team could benefit from expanding Matthews' role by playing him outside more in two-wide receiver sets while keeping in him in the slot when the Eagles use three or more wide receivers.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Matthews had a strong rookie season in 2014, finishing with 67 catches, 872 yards receiving and eight touchdowns. If the Eagles find better quarterback play in 2015, his numbers could be even better during his sophomore season.

SEA - CB Richard Sherman has torn ligaments
    Source: ESPN - Ed Werder
Seattle Seahawks CB Richard Sherman (elbow) has torn ligaments in his elbow, but he is improving daily and he is no longer receiving treatment for the injury.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Sherman isn't going to miss the Super Bowl. After the game, we'll see what kind of treatment Sherman needs to get his elbow right during the offseason. It could be interesting to see if / how this injury affects his play.

Brady is going to be ready to rock and roll against the Seahawks on Sunday. Should be a great game.

CIN - TE Jermaine Gresham in Cincy's plans?
    Source: ESPN.com - Cole Harvey
Cincinnati Bengals TE Jermaine Gresham, a soon-to-be free agent, still has a place within the offense, according to offensive coordinator Hue Jackson. 'We have a way that we do things, and how we want to accomplish things,' Jackson said. 'Within what we asked him to do this year, he did some good things. There are some things he knows he needs to do to be better, and he will work at them to be better.'
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Bengals won't go out of their way to bring Gresham back. However, if the price is right they'll make sure to extend a decent offer. If he returns, Gresham will once again be splitting time with Tyler Eifert.

KC - QB Alex Smith needs receivers?
Source: The Kansas City Star - Terez A. Paylor
Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith needs more weapons around him, according to impending free-agent LB Justin Houston. He believes the Chiefs can win a championship with Smith. “For the past two years we had winning seasons. This year, I feel like our offensive line struggled a little bit, we had some injuries that caused him to get sacked more than usual. But I think we can do it,” Houston noted Tuesday, Jan. 27.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
There shouldn't be a question mark behind the headline. Does Alex Smith need receivers? Of course he does! The Chiefs had the worst collection of WRs in the league last year. If they want to contend for the AFC West title, they need more weapons in the passing game. It was foolish for the Chiefs to pass on a WR in the first round of a historic WR draft class in 2014.

BUF - RB Anthony Dixon has knee surgery
    Source: ESPN.com
Buffalo Bills RB Anthony Dixon (knee) underwent surgery for a partially torn meniscus in his knee Tuesday, Jan. 27.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
This is just a minor procedure which should not keep Dixon from participating once training camp rolls around. We're sure the Bills will ease him back in at that time. Our very own Dr. Jene Bramel says this, "Since he played through injury and has reportedly already started rehab, it's probably relatively minor and they chose the procedure with the shorter of the two recovery periods."

NE - QB Tom Brady fighting a cold
    Source: ESPNBoston.com - Mike Reiss
New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (illness) admitted that he is currently battling a cold, but he said he expects to be 100% ready for the Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 1. 'I've had it for four to five days, my kids got sick and my wife's pretty sick right now,' Brady said. 'I brought it, unfortunately, to Phoenix, but I'll be fine. I'll be good.' Brady is focused on rest and eating plenty of garlic, which he said is one of his 'old remedies.'
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
It's the middle of the week, so we're expecting Brady to be close to full strength by the time the game rolls around on Sunday.

Seattle Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch could face a significant fine for wearing an unauthorized “beast mode” hat to media day.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
He's going to get fined, and he just doesn't care. Lynch doesn't want to talk to the media, and he wants to wear what he likes. The fines go to charity, and Lynch seems to have no problem paying.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
O'Connell was drafted by the Patriots in the third round of the 2008 NFL draft. The former San Diego State quarterback was a scrambler with a strong arm. He would be a good signing for the Browns as he would be able to guide Johnny Manziel.

IND - CFL Star Duron Carter agree to terms
Source: CBSSports.com - Jason La Canfora
Free-agent WR Duron Carter (CFL) and the Indianapolis Colts have reportedly agreed to terms on a deal Tuesday, Jan. 27, according to a source.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Official confirmation of the deal is not expected until February. It's a good addition for the Colts. Carter, the son of Hall of Fame WR Cris Carter, has starred in the CFL for the Montreal Alouettes over the last two years. He's big (6'4" 200 pounds) and can fly down the field. Carter needs to get better at beating press coverage, but he's got incredible natural athleticism after the catch. His addition will push Donte Moncrief for playing time and targets in 2015.

    Friday Update

WAS - Robert Griffin 'I wasn't healthy and it sucked'
    Source: John Keim - ESPN.com
John Keim, from ESPN.com, reports Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III blames his 2014 woes on his injured ankle. Griffin said, "Last year I wasn't healthy, and it sucked, there's no other way to say it other than that. When you get broken and dragged home in the second week of the season ... When you and your team have big things in mind ... It's just getting healthy, getting the mental break, getting a chance to spend time with family, and then formulate my plan going forward for this year, and go ahead and win games and be playing again at this time next year."
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Dynasty owners should not be giving up on Griffin. Things have gone off the rails for him since his breakout rookie season of 2012. We'll see if Griffin can get back on track this year. We see 2015 as a make-or-break season for the athletic quarterback.

TB - Sights set on QB Marcus Mariota?
    Source: Adam Schefter - ESPN
According to Adam Schefter, from ESPN, there's a real sense that Tampa Bay has its sights set on Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota with the number one overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Mariota or Jameis Winston (Florida State) should be the number one pick in the draft. Winston is the more pro-ready passer, and there's some Ben Roethlisberger to his game. Mariota has a game similar to that of Alex Smith (Chiefs), a former number one pick himself. Like Smith, Mariota played in a spread system in college and made easier throws to mostly wide open receivers. Mariota may not throw at the Scouting Combine in February due to a shoulder injury he suffered in the National Championship Game.

PHI - QB Nick Foles 'I plan on being in Philly'
    Source: Jeff McLane - Philly.com
According to Jeff McLane, from Philly.com, Eagles quarterback Nick Foles is planning on being with the Eagles in 2015. Foles, who was on Radio Row at the Super Bowl, said that he was tuning out the noise. Asked if he thought he would be back as the starter in 2015, he said, "I plan on being back and being in Philly."
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
There are rumors circulating that Foles could be on the trade block, and some think the Rams could be interested. Foles is not a natural fit for the Chip Kelly system, and we could see the Eagles try to move up in the draft for QB Marcus Mariota (Oregon). He's planning on being in Philly, but we wouldn't be surprised to see Foles dealt before the season starts.

ARI - RB Jonathan Dwyer sentenced to probation
    Source: Associated Press
According to the Associated Press, Arizona Cardinals running back Jonathan Dwyer has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor and been placed on probation in a case stemming from alleged assaults on his wife during arguments at their apartment last year.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
After Dwyer's arrest in September, the Cardinals placed him on the reserve/non-football illness list. That move kept him from playing for the Cardinals in 2014. Dwyer is set to be a free agent in 2015, and there might be a small market for him now that this legal case is behind him.

Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert (elbow, shoulder) is progressing, according to head coach Marvin Lewis.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

ARI - WR Larry Fitzgerald contract should get done
    Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban
Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald's new contract should be able to get worked out this offseason, according to team president Michael Bidwill. 'Larry and I have met about it, and I know he's interested in getting something resolved,' Bidwill said. 'I think we'll get this all worked out.'
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Under his current contract, Fitzgerald has a cap hit of $23.6 million in 2015, and there's still over $14 million left in dead money. The Cardinals need to shuffle that money around to give themselves more salary-cap room.

PIT - Le'Veon Bell able to work out
    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra
Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (knee) has been able to work out despite ending the season with an injured knee. 'The knee is close to 100%,' Bell said. 'I'm probably about 85-90%, been able to run on it a little bit. So I'm getting back to work out a little.'
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Bell had a phenomenal 2014 season, and he'll certainly be a consideration for the top choice in many fantasy drafts next year. His ability as a runner and receiver out of the backfield make him one of the most dangerous players in the league.

CHI - PK Jay Feely says QB Jay Cutler is not a leader
    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Josh Alper
Chicago Bears PK Jay Feely said QB Jay Cutler isn't a leader off of the field. 'That's not who he is. You're going to have a vacuum there,' Feely said on Mad Dog Sports Radio. 'So you have to know that as a general manager or a head coach, 'Hey, we're not going to have that leadership from this position, so we've really got to have other guys that are going to step up and are going to be our verbal leaders.''
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Feely is not saying anything people haven't thought for most of Cutler's pro career. The Bears seem to be "all in" with Cutler this year. Part of that (most?) is his $19.5 million in dead money for 2015. If Cutler doesn't get it done this year, the Bears could easily cut him before 2016 as there's only $3 million left in dead money on his deal at that time. It's a make-or-break year for Cutler.

Woods has 23 years of coaching experience, including 11 seasons as an NFL defensive backs coach with Oakland (2014), Minnesota (2006-13) and Tampa Bay (2004-05). During his eight years with the Vikings, Woods coach cornerback Antoine Winfield, who made three consecutive Pro Bowls (2008-10) under his instruction. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
This means the Broncos will be moving to a 3-4 defense. This aggressive approach should be a great move for both Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware. The Broncos already have a fantastic secondary, but they'll have to find a nose tackle (Terrance Knighton is a free agent) and one more inside linebacker to start next to Brandon Marshall.

Former Kentucky head coach Joker Phillips has joined the Cleveland Browns staff as wide receivers coach, according to a league source.

A former wide receiver with tons of experience, Phillips takes over a position group that could be missing Josh Gordon (possible suspension) for all of 2015. At Kentucky, Phillips coached both Stevie Johnson (49ers) and Randall Cobb (Packers). We believe Andrew Hawkins will continue to shine for the Browns despite the huge question mark at quarterback.

'I feel pretty confident that I would pass that physical and my neck is in good shape.'
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The physical he takes in early March will just be a confirmation for the team...and it will fully guarantee his 2015 salary of $21.5 million. We have a feeling that Manning will come back, and he will make a decision around the Scouting Combine.

DEN - QB Peyton Manning not worried about offense
Source: The Denver Post - Troy E. Renck
Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning said he feels comfortable in almost any offense 'aside from the Delaware Blue Hen Wing T.' He said that a change to a new offensive philosophy by head coach Gary Kubiak shouldn't be a problem.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Manning, a historian of the game, broke off a Tubby Raymond blast this morning in a press conference. That's pretty solid. Kubiak made Matt Schaub work, and we have no doubts Manning would be a very productive in Denver's new system.

DEN - QB Peyton Manning's decision may come soon
    Source: ESPN.com - Jeff Legwold
Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning may make a decision on whether he plans to return for another season in the near future, according to his dad, Archie Manning. Archie thinks his son will make his decision 'maybe in the next week or two.' 'He's given a lot of thought to it,' Archie Manning said. 'My advice for him is to go through the process, get away a little bit, let your leg heal, give it a lot of thought and decide what you're going to do … (I) think he's taken a good evaluation of where he is physically.'
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Manning isn't going to keep everyone waiting around. He knows the team needs to know which way they're moving forward. We think his decision will be to return in 2015, and we'd imagine that sometime around the Scouting Combine we'll find out.

NE - RB LeGarrette Blount has charges withdrawn
    Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount completed his 50 hours of community service, and his drug charge from earlier this season has been withdrawn, according to his attorney.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Blount was charged with marijuana possession in August with Le'Veon Bell. Now that he's been through the legal process, the NFL could step in with a fine or suspension. If suspended for 2015, we can't see it being more than maybe a game or two. The NFL might decide just to fine Blount instead.

CHI - WR Brandon Marshall may not return
    Source: ESPNChicago.com - Michael C. Wright
Chicago Bears WR Brandon Marshall may not return to the team in 2015, in the opinion of ESPNChicago.com's Michael C. Wright. The thinking is that Marshall and WR Alshon Jeffery are too similar of receivers, and the team needs more diversity at the position. Wright also wrote that this was strictly a possibility, and he expects Marshall to be on the team in 2015.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Bears have gone "all in" with QB Jay Cutler this offseason. Getting rid of Marshall would go against that direction. We don't see Marshall playing anywhere else in 2015. The Bears will give this group one more chance to prove themselves. If they fail, then expect multiple changes before 2016.

PHI - RB LeSean McCoy open to restructure
Source: Philadelphia Inquirer - Jeff McLane
Philadelphia Eagles RB LeSean McCoy has said he would restructure his contract to lower the $11.95 million cap hit for 2015, but he will not take a pay cut.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
McCoy still has $4.4 million in dead money left on his deal. While he says he won't take a pay cut, we're not so sure. The Eagles could move some of the money around to give themselves more room underneath the salary cap this year. Stay tuned.

Chancellor is fine, the only real injury in the secondary is Sherman so will be interesting to see how he looks. Bye week after Championship Games helped him.

Congrats again to Rodgers. And congrats to J.J. Watt for putting himself in the discussion.

SEA - S Kam Chancellor looked great Saturday
Source: New York Post - Paul Schwartz
Seattle Seahawks SS Kam Chancellor (knee) looked great in practice Saturday, Jan. 31, according to head coach Pete Carroll.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Good news for Seattle and Chancellor. How physically ready some of the Seattle defenders are will be a question that will likely be asked early.

JAX - Owner supports QB Blake Bortles
Source: Ryan O'Halloran - Florida Times Union
Ryan O'Halloran, from the Florida Times-Union, reports that Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan is incredibly supportive of QB Blake Bortles. “I love [quarterback] Blake [Bortles], and I think he’s a key building block moving forward,” Khan said. “We have to unlock his potential and we needed to have somebody who has done that before and has a great track record. I think [new offensive coordinator] Greg [Olson] is about as good as it gets.”
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Bortles gained a ton of experience during his rookie year in 2014. He didn't improve much as the season went on, but the Jaguars will work diligently to put a better offense around him in 2015. He's their franchise quarterback, and they'll give Bortles every opportunity to succeed this year and in the future.

NYJ - QB situation still unknown in NY
    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini
New York Jets QB Geno Smith said he still hasn't received a definitive answer from head coach Todd Bowles on the team's quarterback situation.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Michael Vick is set to be an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins in March. Geno Smith is still under contract, and he finished off 2014 with an amazing 358-yard performance (with three touchdowns) against the Dolphins in Week 17. Matt Simms and G.J. Kinne are still kicking around on the roster as well. Arguably the best free agent QB is Mark Sanchez (Eagles), and it would be unlikely to see him come back. The Jets have the 6th overall pick in the draft, and they could see a guy like Marcus Mariota (Oregon) or Jameis Winston (Florida State) fall to that spot--if they're lucky. Obviously, stay tuned.

ARI - WR Larry Fitzgerald contract to be done quickly?
    Source: ESPN.com - Josh Weinfuss
Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald's new deal could get done quickly following the Super Bowl, according to team president Michael Bidwill.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
For a time it looked like the two sides could potentially part ways in 2015. Now, that doesn't seem to be the case. Fitzgerald has already said he wants to get a new deal done and stay with the team. He is slated to earn $16.25 million in 2015.

CAR - TE Ed Dickson wants to return
Source: Charlotte Observer - Joseph Person
Carolina Panthers TE Ed Dickson, who signed a one-year contract for the 2014 season, wants to return to the team and has discussed a multi-year deal.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Dickson didn't do much for the Panthers in 2014. He was only targeted 17 times, caught 10 passes for 115 yards and one touchdown. If re-signed, Dickson would maintain his spot as a reserve tight end behind starter Greg Olsen.

PHI - Negotiating with WR Jeremy Maclin
Source: Philadelphia Inquirer - Jeff McLane
Philadelphia Eagles WR Jeremy Maclin confirmed negotiations between his representation and the Eagles are ongoing.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
If the Eagles need more time to get a long-term deal done with Maclin, they could always use the franchise tag on him. That would give him a one-year guarantee of around $12.7 million, but most importantly it would give the Eagles until July 15th to work out a new deal. The veteran receiver is likely seeking a five-year deal worth over $10 million per year.

DAL - Cowboys believe in RB Joseph Randle?
    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer
Dallas Cowboys RB Joseph Randle was the team's primary backup this year, and there are people within the organization that believe he can be a 1,400-yard rusher as a lead back.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
No offense to Randle--but he's no DeMarco Murray. He's arguable faster than Murray, but he's not as powerful or instinctive as a runner. Now, behind that monster O-Line, Randle could be a 1,000-yard rusher...but would he be as dangerous as Murray on a game-to-game basis? This is a huge question mark for the Cowboys as they are facing the decision of whether or not to re-sign Murray in free agency this offseason.
