Officials in the Dominican Republic do NOT believe alcohol was a factor in the crash that killed St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Oscar Taveras and his girlfriend ... TMZ Sports has learned.

We spoke with reps at the Metropolitan Police Department in the D.R. who tell us ... Taveras was driving "very, very fast" on a wet road when he lost control and slammed into a huge tree.

Both Taveras and his GF were killed in the crash.

Officials tell us an autopsy is currently being conducted on Oscar -- but we're told there was no immediate evidence at the crash scene to lead officials to believe he was drunk behind the wheel.

Officials tell us the weather may have played a role -- because it had been raining around the time of the accident and the roads were slippery.

We're told ... Taveras is not the first person to have lost control and slammed into that particular tree -- another person died in the same exact spot last year under similar weather conditions.

sad to lose so much for something like this. the dumb things we do when we are young. can't criticize him too much, because I had 1/100000th of the money he did and probably did even dumber things than this. I was just lucky.

True, it turned out it was tragic Cards didn't make WS. They even had the lead on Bumgarner when he left the game, but bullpen lost it.

And applause to the San Francisco Giants and Bumgarner. In my book an established dynasty now .
The Royals will have their day. That young roster is the start of something special.

Officials in the Dominican Republic confirmed Cardinals outfielder Oscar Taveras was legally intoxicated at the time of his fatal car accident last month, reports the Associated Press. Taveras and his girlfriend were killed in a single-car crash on October 26.
Here's more from the Associated Press:
Tessie Sanchez, a spokeswoman for the attorney general's office in the Dominican Republic, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that toxicology reports showed Taveras had a blood-alcohol level five times the legal limit when he lost control of his car Oct. 26 on a highway in Puerto Plata.
She says the 22-year-old Taveras was "legally intoxicated when he crashed."
Taveras, 22, was considered one of the best prospects in baseball coming into the 2014 season. He hit .239 with three home runs in 80 games this summer, his MLB debut. Taveras hit a game-tying home run in Game 3 of the NLCS two weeks before the accident.

I don't know what the legal limit is there but 5x even .06% is damn near death from alcohol poisoning or at least passed out.

Exactly right, totally agree, I take it girlfriend must have been drunk too if she got in the car with him in that condition.
