Blake Bortles Performs Well in Jaguars Scrimmage

The company line has been and probably still is that Bortles will sit behind Chad Henne, but it could get interesting. Let's see how the duo perform the first couple of weeks of preseason.

Rookie Blake Bortles completed 9-of-13 passes for 79 yards and a touchdown in the Jaguars' Saturday live scrimmage.

One of Bortles' passes was dropped, and another batted down at the line. Beat writer Michael DiRocco believes the Jags "have to be encouraged" after Bortles demonstrated "poise and confidence" against the Jacksonville defense. Bortles' best throw went for 25 yards behind the coverage to Mike Brown down the left sideline. His TD went to UDFA TE D.J. Tialavea from three yards out.

If you draft a QB that high in the first round, doesn't really matter if he is considered a 'project' he is expected to start in his first year. Maybe a decade ago he could get by sitting on the bench, for a few years. Not anymore, not going to work like that. He will be the starter by midway point, if not sooner.

I was at that scrimmage. The most impressive thing was the HD scoreboard. The picture was better than the live game.

You would think he'd be starting real soon, like by week 4 or 5 at the latest. Henne is no good and being the 3rd overall player picked.

If he can't beat out Henne to start week 1 you can chalk him up as a bust.

The D may be really good with addition of Chris Clemons, Red Bryant & Ziggy Hood. If the youth of offense can grow...

No way. His offensive weapons will not help him too much this season but he's the real deal.

Do you think that is a precaution? Or are people just getting hurt worse, more often?

I played for a year when I was in highschool and remember thinking that being a Pro NFL player would be like getting hit with a car going 30 MPH 25 times a day.

They will start Henne just as a courtesy and then after 3 straight losses he will be starting.

Bortles won't start Week 1. And as long as Henne doesn't bomb totally (not a given), we may not see Bortles all year.

After attending Jaguars camp, ESPN's Adam Caplan reported on NFL Insiders Monday that the team is "gonna stick to their game plan" and keep Blake Bortles on the bench all season.

Bortles has reportedly been better than expected in camp, but the Jags are intent on giving him a full year to "learn" behind journeyman Henne. "They're gonna stick to their game plan," were Caplan's words. "Chad Henne is the starter. Blake Bortles sits all year." We still wouldn't be surprised to see Bortles get late-season playing time if Jacksonville racks up early-season losses.

Blake Bortles completed 7-of-11 passes for 117 yards in Friday night's preseason opener against the Bucs.

Bortles could have had a couple more completions had Mike Brown not dropped two passes downfield. The No. 3 overall pick came on in relief of Chad Henne midway through the second quarter and immediately started picking apart the Bucs' backup defense. His best throw was a 21-yard strike to UDFA WR Allen Hurns where Bortles looked off the safety and came back to Hurns. Bortles routinely was peppering his receivers in the intermediate-to-deep part of the field. Henne is locked in as the starter, but Bortles' debut qualifies as a huge success.
