Only the Angels would be playing well for a change and acquire a washed-up old man and locker room cancer to ruin their momentum. This team's (mis)management never ceases to amaze me.

that washed up old man was the best closer in baseball last year.

He has actually pitched great his two games as an Angel.

    The defense failed him today.

Do you watch games? Doubt it.

Do me a favor and watch him pitch next time. He's garbage. Just like he was basically for his whole career other than a few outlier years in Pittsburgh where he developed better off speed stuff for a while.

Defensive blunders aside, I would hardly qualify that as a "great" performance today.

    it was a non-save situation.

even great closers like mariano rivera had awful numbers in non-save situations.

give the guy at least 10 save opportunities before labeling him washed up.

I've watched him all season. He's old, his stuff has fallen off and he's a bad clubhouse guy from what I've read. Why the Angels would take him -- even if they did want to get rid of Frieri -- is beyond me. The idea of this guy closing against AL teams in a pennant race is almost laughable.

you make it sound like frieri was an all-star or something. he was so awful scioscia was using a rookie from class-a as his closer. he was close to being released so to get anyone, especially a proven all-star caliber closer was a coup for the angels.

sure it wouldve been nicer to get hudson street or papelbon but it speaks to how awful frieris trade value was.

I know they were just trying to get rid of Frieri. I just don't see how trading one bad closer for another solves anything. And I'm sorry, the guy isn't a "proven all-star closer." Again, he had one fluke year in that role in the bad NL Central.

trade deadline is july 31 so i do believe angels will make another trade for street or papelbon then.

so to have grilli closing in the short term makes perfect sense especially since frieri was never going to see another save situation ever again.

there is no downside to this trade. the upside is that grilli will regain his all-star form from last season. at worst he could blow every save which is what frieri was doing anyways.

IIRC, Grilli developed better off-speed stuff after he arrived in Pittsburgh.

That magical run is over, though. Back to a pumpkin you go. Angels gained nothing from this trade. Father time is crushing the "second wind" Grilli gained on his career.

I have to give the Pirates' pitching coach credit -- he's made a bunch of guys like Grilli overachieve and appear legit.

Grilli looked good tonight. 95 mph fast ball on the paint, with good movement. And a pretty steady slider too. He looks like the goods for angels if he can regain some confidence.

frieri tonight: 0.1 innings, 5 hits, 5 ers, 19.29 era
grilli with angels: 3.1 innings, 1 hit, 0 er, 0.00 era.

anyone who believes angels made a mistake is completely clueless.

I would take either of these guys over Addison Reed. It's amazing how this guy still has a closer spot in the league after the White Sox shipped him with all the games he lost for them last year. Mind blowing.

Not exactly, the Angels bullpen has been great since the trade. Collective 1.64 ERA and 1.00 WHIP the last 10 games. Grilli yet to all an earned run in six innings in a set-up role, which he could be better suited for. Joe Smith doing nice job as closer.

angels traded for hudson street as predicted.

grilli has pitched in 9 games for angels and sports a sparkling 1.13 era. meanwhile frieri sports a 13.50 era for the pirates.
