Why is College/NFL kicking so damn late?
Can't remember the last time college football didn't open until September? Also first NFL Sunday is basically middle of September? Wtf? Always look forward to that last week of August for some meaningful football but guess I'll have to wait another week

college always kicks off labor day weekend, nfl the following week. we just have to wait for it to cycle back around to get august football again.

IMO they should move football back and have it start in October.
the weather is still nice out. It just does not feel like football season yet. I think of cold weather and snow when i think of football.
No reason to have the season wrap up in January. They could extend it through February and March and that way we would have something else to watch other than basketball in Feb/March until baseball starts back again.
Its very depressing when football ends b/c its cold outside and the days are short and there is no football on tv.

The right answer is because Labor Day is September 7th this year, the latest it can possibly be.
College Football always starts the Thursday before Labor Day, NFL the Thursday after.
WNBA is playing later this year, I doubt the NFL wanted to compete with that powerhouse any longer than they have to, LDO.

So the NFL has a lifetime deal with the national labor day society that states it cannot ever start it season ever a different weekend? My lord when is Superbowl weekend? Valentines day?
It is no big deal, the Super Bowl is still February 7. It is still the first Sunday in February just like recent years.
There is talk that after expansion, the Super Bowl will be moved to early May.
