Why do they play blackjack strategy different in tournaments?

I got a offer for free entry into a blackjack tournament. So I did some YouTube searching on how they work. Everyone splitting tens, double down on 10 vs 10.

    Why?

Because in a tournament it's different. If you are trailing the lead by say $50 or $100 and you have the chance to double on a hard 12 and your opponent has a 17, dealer is showing a 5, you should double. Basic strat says that's a big NO NO but in a tournament you have to take risks. Also splitting 10s vs a dealer showing a 6 you win 64% of the time - which isn't bad but in a tournament if you need to overtake the lead you'll be forced to split more than you usually would.
