Mayweather vs. Pacquiao And The $100,000 Ticket

Thanks to rise of MMA, some believe that professional boxing has become less popular over the course of the last decade. However, the match next month between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd MayweatherJr. is shaping up to be a once-in-a-generation sporting and entertainment event. Financially speaking, it looks like the fight will absolutely shatter previous records in just about every way imaginable.

Before that can happen tickets for the event need to go on sale, but so far not a single person has a tangible ticket in hand. According to the New York Post, some fans are even cancelling their hotel reservations in Las Vegas because they are unsure whether they will end up with tickets for the historic bout. Pacquiao’s manager, Michael Koncz, fully blames the Mayweather team for the holdup of tickets, however this is all speculation and the truth remains to be known.

Meanwhile, ticket brokers are confounded and flustered as they scrape to get a hold of tickets that, so far, do not even exist. Face value prices, which are reported to be running between $1,500 and $7,500, are already tripling in the secondary sales market based on numerous reports and secondary site listings. There is little reason to believe prices will ease up before the start of the event. The cheapest ticket you can find anyone listing is $5,000 as of today on the resale market. The highest price is a ringside seat listing for $100,000. At the end of the day many insiders believe ringside tickets will hold up at $75,000-$80,000 per seat, which is an unforeseen amount for a sporting event.

The average ticket price right now over at SeatGeek , a ticket resale website, is $8,000. Considering the financial floor for the event was going to be $72 million if every ticket sold for face value, there is every possibility that this event will top $150 million in revenue from ticket sales alone. This always was going to be a hot ticket, but this stalemate, between both parties’ camps and the MGM Grand over allotments, is driving prices through the roof.

With the old boxing gate record being $20 million, set in 2013 for Mayweather’s fight against Canelo Alvarez, the numbers being floated around for the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather bout are absolutely staggering

The MGM Grand recently announced that, even with the holdup, there would only be a “few” tickets released for public consumption at face value. Everything else will have to be purchased from brokers or on the second-hand market, but none of that is particularly surprising considering the talent.

What has been surprising is the delay on the release of tickets. Many consumers are understandably reticent to invest in the abstract concept of good seats, especially considering what happened at this year’s Super Bowl. The holdup will eventually be lifted as this quibble over gate money will not last so long that it cuts into the boxers’ abilities to rake in a lot of cash. Yet, the current state of confusion and lack of any actual tickets has created an interesting and odd market for seats. StubHub, for example, does not even have any tickets for sale right now and the fight is scheduled for a week from Saturday. This is good news that there are no spec orders on StubHub right now as we might see the opposite of what happened at this year’s Super Bowl with ticket prices dropping for all but ringside seats.

This is a massive event for the sport and also is sure to be one of the most expensive boxing events of the decade. Michael Koncz, Pacquiao’s manager, has stated that literally every ticket in the arena will be sold.

Even famous boxing promoter Bob Arum, who never pays for tickets to these events, will have to pay for his own seat.

When people like Arum are paying the high price for admission, it is pretty obvious that this is the hottest ticket ever in the sport of boxing. So far, however, the actual market value of these tickets are proving to be an enigma.

There is no tickets available to the public. Only players of mgm will have access, talking 40-50million in action a year. 500k+ credit limits. Both fighters camps have very limited seats as well

Mayweather camp changing the terms, no shock there

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told ESPN.com on Tuesday that he wasn't signing the contract that he received a draft of on April 15 because it wasn't what he agreed to when the MGM, Mayweather Promotions and he signed the term sheet a couple months ago.
"We agreed that we would all be signatories on the final contract and then they sent us a draft of the agreement and it excluded us," said Arum, who promotes Pacquiao.

    Let me make some calls

Get your *********** out and hope you get lucky.

The much-anticipated sale of tickets for the May 2 megafight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao are expected to be put on sale later today after Top Rank signed off on the contract with the MGM Grand, the host venue for the fight.

A limited number of tickets -- reportedly fewer than 1,000 -- priced at $1,500, $2,500, $3,500 $5,000 and $7,500 will be put on sale online. MGM officials were finalizing the details and procedure for distribution of the precious seats.

"It looks like we can move forward," Top Rank president Todd duBoef said Wednesday. "We're just waiting on the final paperwork on the contract but everything is in order."

According to Yahoo! Sports which first broke the story, CBS chairman Leslie Moonves interceded on Top Rank's behalf to settle a dispute over the contract with the MGM and make sure Top Rank's signatory rights pertaining to the fight were not violated.

Moonves, who was instrumental in making the fight a reality, got both sides on a conference call and worked out the remaining legal issues.

"He was able to fairly communicate with everyone," duBoef said of Moonves. "If it wasn't for him, I don't know that we would have gotten this done. He has been instrumental from the very beginning to make this fight happen."
