LOL at the Blue Jays giving Russell Martin 82 million. WTF just happened? Hilarious

Easily the worst signing for any team this offseason.
    237,211, 226, 290
Those are the batting averages for the guy in his last 4 years, in which he only played in 110 games last year for the .290.
This is an absolute disgrace, total bust signing.
The catcher they have already Navarro is just as good if not better offensively.
MArtin obviously is solid working with pitching staffs, but the money he just scored is astronomical compared to his actual worth, which I would have said was about 8 mill per year MAX.

WTF was this team thinking signing an overrated catcher when they already have a good one, and have a million other holes on that team's field right now?

    Horrible upper management.
This is one we will laugh at down the road even harder.

Navarro is average at best, Martin is an improvement. But if the Blue Jays could probably get 2-3 quality arms for the bullpen or a very solid starter, their pitching staff sucks donkey balls.

Are you sure he's an improvement that much? I'm not convinced he's that big of an upgrade. Not enough to throw the guy 14 million more per year either.

Not only that, but 5 years for a 32-year old catcher.

Hard to find good catching these days though. Now they just need some guys to throw it to him.

Yeah dumb signing. Just keep Navarro and use that money towards a real pitcher.

    Martin = 15M per

    Bautista = 14M

    ......ok anthopolous

I am honestly dumbfounded by the deal. I am a Blue Jays fan...and this signing breaks my heart. Unless they already have a deal in the works to trade Navarro for the ghosts of Greg Maddux and Rogers Clemens....this makes no sense.

Benny, don't rub salt in my wounds. Benny, I can't take it.

Agreed, this is stupid money. Just don't gain that much to justify spending that money there.

Surprising how many of the top 10 catchers (or so) in the game today are actually over 27 or 28 though. Only top 10 catcher in game right now under 27 is probably S. Perez.

that is a ton of money Benny. And yeah those numbers Martin put up dont seem 82 million dollar worthy....

And Navarro is solid offensively , not so sure about his defense. But anyway what Martin brings to the table is he does an outstanding job of working with and developing young pitchers. he did an amazing job managing that staff in Pittsburgh and he deserves a ton of credit for the Pirates recent success.

Yeah, if you're a Jays fan, this is a major debacle for your team.
I just don't understand what triggered such an awful move.
So many holes in that field and in that bullpen, and you get a catcher you didn't even need and have ignored your real needs so far in free agency.

The bully doesn't worry me, but they need a 1st baseman/DH and one more power outfielder.

I was at the gym running on the treadmill when I saw the deal (5 years at that money) and literally almost fell off. Now that would have been a debacle.

baseball is a game of inches man. Have you ever played baseball?

the catcher is the most important player on the field.

When bookmakers set lines on games what is the line based on ? Starting pitchers.

I'll take Cervelli and Stewart at catcher and use that money saved to strengthen my staff.

Chan Ho Park, Gary Matthews Jr., Darren Dreifort and Denny Neagle. To name a few. And those are all from the last 15 years (and I could name a ton more). Easy to find way worse signings.

Martin will be a solid player for the Jays, and he will help the pitching staff....and like previous posters have said, he will be popular in Toronto. Is he worth that money? Nope. I would have maxed it out at 4 years and $40 million and even then would have felt stretched out a bit.

But the worst signing in the history or MLB? Get your head examined.

Also, Pujols last contract is WAY worse. Not even close. Pujols deal will end up being the worst in history BY FAR.

I agree im a Jays fan myself and I thought the contract was a wee bit ridiculous. I kept hearing rumours we were going after Nick Markakis, that would have been a much better pick up I think.

you guys are missing the point here

martin is not an offensive superstar, then again most catchers are not.

the position was very scarce this year in free agency. so martin was clearly the #1 catching free agent. the available catching free agents are just so scarce this year.

same situation with sandoval at 3B. he is a good player, not a superstar, but someone will overpay for him too, esp with the red sox and giants bidding over him

so there were a few teams bidding on him. jays, cubs, pirates were the serious suitors

when competition for a known commodity happens the price goes up and always gets inflated.

also as big bear pointed out, the jays have A LOT of young pitchers this year. anyone in baseball knows is very good at handling young pitchers.

so if their pitching staff plays well when he is catching then the contract will be well worth it.
