Could the Yoenis Cespedes era in Boston be coming to a premature end?
One report from the New York Daily News seems to thinks so.
Bill Madden of the Daily News writes that Cespedes' signing with the Roc Nation agency may be the final straw that prompts the Sox to trade him away while they can, and not run the risk of losing him via free agency.
The fear is that Cespedes' asking price is going to rise with the new agency much like it did for Robinson Cano when he signed with Roc Nation and signed a massive deal with the Mariners.
Perhaps if Red Sox coaches were big fans of Cespedes, they'd try to get a deal done, but the report, quoting a Red Sox insider, also says “[Cespedes] marches to his own drum and the coaches all hate him."
Cespedes reportedly is not a fan of Boston, either.
But Cespedes does provide the much-needed power that the Sox lineup lacked in the middle of the order last year.
If these reports are true that Cespedes and the Sox aren't fans of each other, then perhaps a trade is the best option. Boston will have to get a legitimate starting pitcher back in return at least, as power is hard to come by these days and there isn't anybody in the Sox minor leagues ready to add a great deal of it.
Fellow Red Sox and Cuban Rusney Castillo had signed with Roc Nation and that did not scare the Red Sox away from signing him to a seven-year, $72.5 million deal.
Cespedes hit .269 with five home runs and 33 RBI for the Red Sox in 51 games last season.
