Highly touted A's starter Dan Straily makes his major league debut tonight.

The Oakland Athletics plan to call up right-hander Dan Straily, who has more strikeouts than any other pitcher in professional baseball, to start Friday against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Straily has 175 strikeouts in 138 1-3 innings while splitting time between Double-A Midland and Triple-A Sacramento this season. That's 21 more strikeouts than major league leader Stephen Strasburg of the Washington Nationals.

''I think we're all excited to watch him pitch,'' A's manager Bob Melvin said before Thursday's game vs. the Blue Jays. ''Guys like that you find a way to get into the rotation. I've seen the video, I've seen the numbers and everybody is real excited, Tomorrow will be a very good day because of it — a lot of hype, and rightfully so.''
Straily was in Oakland to watch Thursday night's game against the Blue Jays but won't be added to the A's 40-man roster until Friday.

The 23-year-old has a 2.60 ERA in 22 minor league games but it's the strikeout numbers that have the A's buzzing.
Straily recorded 108 strikeouts in 85 1-3 innings for Midland before getting promoted to the Sacramento.
He added another 67 strikeouts and allowed only eight earned runs in 53 innings there and had just finished charting pitches for a teammate when he was notified of the pending move up to the majors by River Cats manager Darren Bush.

''I sat there stunned,'' Straily said. ''I honestly don't think I said a word. It's just been kind of a whirlwind the last 20 hours.''

Straily, who once played summer ball in San Jose about 30 minutes south of the Oakland Coliseum, was in the A's clubhouse before the game but won't officially be added to the 40-man roster until Friday.
That's when he'll replace left-hander Travis Blackley in Oakland's rotation and make his first major league start. He will become the fifth rookie pitcher to start a game this season for the A's.
Straily doesn't have an overpowering fastball — he averages between 90-92 mph - but complements it with a slider and changeup that helped the fourth-round pick in 2009 quickly move through the A's farm system.
''What the organization has done very well this year is to target guys and not be afraid to get them here while they're hot,'' Melvin said. ''The numbers would suggest he's a power pitcher but at times he can pitch to contact, too.''

Straily's first order of bsiness was trying to get enough tickets to Friday's game. His fiance, Amanda Miller, is with him in Oakland and several other members of his family are expected to make the trip.
''It's pretty shocking news to be honest,'' Straily said. ''I feel honored to be brought up, I really do. This is the career goal, to be here.''

    The Book on Daniel Straily

    Prospect Info and Scouting Report

    Daniel Straily / RHP, OAK
    Born 12/1/1988 (23 yrs old)
    Springfield, OR, USA

    Height 6-2
    Weight 220
    Bats/Throws R/R
    791

    ScoutingBook Combine Ranking (8/3/2012): #193
MiLB.com Season Preview: Unranked or n/a
    Scout.com/FOX Sports: Unranked or n/a
    ESPN: Unranked or n/a
The Sporting News: Unranked or n/a
Baseball America 2012: Unranked or n/a
    Baseball Prospectus: Unranked or n/a

A 24th-round pick out of Marshall in 2009, Oakland prospect Dan Straily is doing his part to add to the aura of genius that still surrounds Billy Beane. After shredding the high-A Cal League last year with 154 strikeouts against only 40 walks, he's been doing more of the same in AA in 2012. A rare example of a pitcher whose raw stuff seems to keep getting better with age, Straily has added both velocity and movement in the past two seasons, to the point that the onetime fringe-looking prospect has become a viable middle of the rotation candidate for the Athletics very, very soon. His fastball is mid-90's, his curve is better than average, and his work ethic is off the charts. If you haven't heard much about Straily yet, don't worry: he'll be earning all sorts of ink in the next year or two.

Oakland is legit, the kid is legit, two things though, his fastball is more like 93MPH, not overpowering but lots of movement.
A type of fastball that gets you nine K's a night in AA or AAA ball, but he's in the big boy league now, that 93 MPH heater better have some serious movement, because even weak hitters like Steven Drew and the likes know what to do with a 93 MPH fast ball that doesn't tail.

Second thing, Oakland isn't cheap tonight, want the kid, you have to lay 3:2, and I'm not sure I want to lay that kind of juice, but the kid is legit.

Does he have the same type of first game that the Mets prospect had a few weeks ago?

93 on the slow gun, 95 MPH on the Bushnell (fast gun) but the fastball hops.

I can't lay -160 on a guy like this... Oakland very easily could score one or two runs....

Hope he doesn't have a debut like the great Todd Van Poppel did in Oakland...

He was a highly touted arm that was supposed to be the next Nolan Ryan...

I was at that game, Mo Vaughn and the Red Sox didn't treat him so well...

That's right, I go way back...

Remember Timmy's debut, Ryan Howard took his fastball to Saturn, Timmy never made it out of the fifth inning, Philly gave him the 'welcome kid' treatment.

Liking the UNDER here. Won't lay the chalk on him, but I think the game should stay tight.

Would be a bit concerned about that 90% strand rate but i guess its thats high cause hes good enough to get outta jams just blowing guys away. See if he can do it at the big league level
