New York Mets at Colorado Rockies
I’ve been rough on the Mets of late and all they’ve done in return is hang around in the NL East while the highly touted Phillies and Marlins anchor its basement. The Mets—coming off a sweep of the Marlins after plating two ninth inning runs off closer Heath Bell—are looking confident as David Wright has returned to form and catcher Josh Thole has reached base in each of his starts this season. And while they probably just lost Mike Pelfrey for the season to Tommy John Surgery—enter tonight’s starter Chris Schwinden who was 2-2 at Triple A Buffalo. Don’t bee too concerned Mets backers, as he faces be Drew Pomeranz who gives up half a dozen every time he sets foot on the mound. Add to that the fact that the Rockies have managed only nine wins despite playing teams the likes of the Astros, Pirates, and Padres and the pitcher with the teams best ERA is going to be 50 next year and you;ve got the a perfect debut for the youngster. The Mets are a scrappy team and while Jason Bay (15 Day DL) continues to be a bust, the Mets are winning with a host of young players like Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Jordany Valdespin, and now Schwinden. Wow, the last time I saw anyone testing out this many different bats and arms, Madame Tussaud’s was making a wax figure of Rodney King.

Detroit Tigers at New York Yankees
The season is early but these two teams are struggling as they both sit just above .500 and—while at first glance—going with Verlander seems a no-brainer, it should be noted that he has won only once in Yankee Stadium in his entire career and that was August of 2007. Still he is facing Ivan Nova who—despite being 3-0—has been less than impressive in any of his starts. Nova and his 3.79 ERA, have benefited from facing the likes of Jerome Williams, Clay Bucholz, and Brian Matusz. Wow two fives and a three—they might as well be playing Texas Hold ‘em because either way those three are a terrible flop. He will not see the same offensive support when his Yankees bats go up against the reigning Cy young and MVP.

Washington Nationals at LA Dodgers
Matt Kemp has picked up right where he left off last year when he missed the coveted 40-40 club by one home run. This year, he would be looking good to come though on his promise of a 50 homers / 50 steals season if he wasn’t having the problem having so many extra base hits that he hasn’t had any bases to steal. Kemp leads the majors in average (.449), Homers (10) and RBI (23) and is showing no signs of slowing down as he is on pace for 81 homers and 224 RBI. Kemp is hitting so many homers of late, the Dodgers were thinking of patenting the phrase “Bye, Bye baby” only to find out it had already been done by the NBA’s Shawn Kemp in the 90’s to save him time on father’s day. Combine Kemp’s production with the fact that Clayton Kershaw is on the mound as stingy as any Dodger pitcher as Sandy Koufax was off of it—and things don’t look good for the Nats. But this isn’t your mother’s Nationals team because again as they are playing like never before since they moved from Montreal. Their rotation of Strasburg, Gonzalez, Jackson, Zimmermann, and Detwiler not only have the lowest ERA in the majors at 2.20 but it actually goes down to 1.96 when they are on the road as Washington just doesn’t let people score. In fact, the only city where people score when Washington visits is Cartagena.
Davey Johnson’s squad is well worth the investment in this game.
