The Tampa Bay Rays could finalize a minor league contract with free-agent DH/outfielder Hideki Matsui as soon as today, the Tampa Bay Times reports.

The deal has been rumored for several days, though the team has declined to comment.

Matsui, 37, hit .251 with 12 homers and 72 RBIs with the Oakland A’s last season, but he apparently didn’t draw much interest during the offseason and spring training. Part of the reason for that might be his inability to play regularly in the outfield because of his sore knees. He has played only 68 games in field in the past four seasons combined.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, Matsui, if signed, eventually will be sent to Class AAA. If he hits well there, he could get might earn a promotion to the majors.

In his nine-season major league career, Matsui is a .285 hitter with 173 homers and 753 RBIs. He played seven seasons with the New York Yankees and one season with both the Los Angeles Angels and the A’s.
