Our football betting expert Ross Benjamin went a perfect 6-0 last week with his pigskin picks right here at Sportsbook Review. Read his NCAA Football betting preview article on the upcoming Akron/Penn St. game, and find out where he deems the betting value to be.
Home Opener in State College
The Penn St. Nittany Lions will host the Akron Zips at Beaver Stadium in State College, Pennsylvania with the opening kickoff slated for Noon ET. According to college football odds, the Nittany Lions are a 15.0 point home favorite. These schools have met 4 times since the 1999 season, with the last meeting coming in 2009. Penn St. won all 4 of those contests, but failed to cover in 3 of those 4.
Great Start for the Zips
Akron won their opening game of the season last week for the first time since 2007. Granted it came against Howard which is an FCS school, but it’s still a positive sign for a team that went a combined 6-18 over the last 2-seasons. Even more encouraging was the decisiveness of the win, as they blanked their outmanned opponent 41-0, and outgained them by 297 yards. The Zips were led by red-shirt junior quarterback Kyle Pohl who was 22-35 in the air for 303 yards, tossed 4 touchdown passes, had no interceptions, and was the leading rusher with 48-yards on 7-carries. Despite their porous record over the last 2-seasons under current head coach Terry Bowden, they’ve managed to go 7-3 ATS as a road underdog during that time.
Tough Itinerary for the Nittany Lions
The good news for Penn St. is they won their season opener in dramatic fashion 26-24 over Central Florida. Sam Ficken’s 36-yard field goal as time expired provided the margin of victory. The win revenged a home loss to the Golden Knights a season ago. The bad news is the game was played across the ocean in Dublin, Ireland, and they weren’t given the benefit of having the week off to recover from a grueling travel schedule. Penn St. had some shining starts offensively versus UCF, starting with sophomore quarterback Christian Hackenberg who was 32-47 passing for 454 yards. The Nittany Lions also saw two budding wide receiver stars emerge in sophomore Geno Lewis (8 receptions-173 yards), and freshmen DaeSean Hamilton (11 receptions-165-yards).
When making your college football picks note that Penn St. is clearly the better of the two teams in this matchup. However, games aren’t played on paper, and the Nittany Lions biggest opponent may be their own physical fatigue considering their rigorous itinerary during the past 10-days. Akron went from 1-11 during the 2012 season, to 5-7 in 2013, and closed last season by winning their last 3-games. All of a sudden the Zips are on a modest 4-game win streak. I have a small lean toward the road underdog in this game, with the intangible factors being a key element in my though process.
NCAA Football Betting System
Any non-conference away under of 7.0 or more, that’s coming off a an ATS win as a favorite in which they allowed 7-points or less, versus an opponent coming off a straight up underdog win, has gone 11-0 ATS since 1980. The underdog has also gone 4-6-1 straight up in those 11-games.
