Both the Longhorns and Red Raiders are sitting at 6-2 on the season. Which Big 12 team will be handed their third loss, and which side should we be taking with our college football picks? Check out our play inside.
Texas vs. Texas Tech
Texas Tech has opened as a seven-point favorite and there
hasn't been too much movement as of yet. An odds line of 6.5 has been put on offer by
sportsbooks such as Bookmaker and BetDSI.
The total for this conference battle is at 67. The OVER has
gone 5-3 in the Longhorns' eight games so far and 4-3 in Texas Tech's seven
Whoever thought the Big 12 would be any less competitive
with the losses of Missouri and Texas A&M were kidding themselves.
Just ask the Longhorns. They've already fell victim to
Oklahoma and then were outlasted by West Virginia, one of the new teams in the
Texas has rebounded nicely however, winning consecutive
games over Baylor (56-50) and Kansas (21-17). The win over the Jayhawks was
probably a little too close for Mack Brown's liking, but a win's a win.
The Longhorns were actually down by three and needed a
last-second touchdown drive, led by Case McCoy, to head back to Austin with the
win. McCoy replaced David Ash, who struggled from the onset and finished with
only 63 passing yards and two interceptions. McCoy was 5-of-7 for 68 yards and
the game-winning score, which was caught by D.J. Grant.
If Texas wants any chance of overcoming Texas Tech this
weekend, they have to be much more fluid offensively. Reverting to the
productivity they showcased against the Bears (56 points and 525 yards of total
offense) would be ideal.
Texas Tech Red Raiders
The Red Raiders are no strangers to a tough schedule, as
they'll be playing a ranked opponent for the fifth consecutive week.
Over the last month, Texas Tech has beaten West Virginia
(49-14) and TCU (56-53) but then fell short against Oklahoma (41-20) and Kansas
State (55-24). The blowout loss to the Wildcats came this past weekend.
The Red Raiders will be happy they never have to deal with
Collin Klein again. Klein had only seven incomplete passes and finished with
233 passing yards, 83 rushing yards and four overall touchdowns.
It was simply a helpless feeling for Texas Tech as Klein masterminded
scoring drives seemingly every time he touched the ball. The Red Raiders did
their best to keep up offensively, but they turned the ball over three times
and also had their momentum killed by some untimely penalties.
Considering Tech hasn't been back at home since October 13,
they'll be ecstatic to get to face off against Texas at Jones AT&T Stadium.
College Football Pick
The Longhorns dominated Texas Tech 52-20 in this meeting
last season, but that game was in Austin and this year's Red Raiders are
Regardless of the defeat, Seth Doege tore up Texas for 381
yards and two touchdown passes in 2011 and I expect he's going to have another
big day against a Longhorns defense that's allowing 32.8 points per game.
Texas has been shaky at best on the road this season and now
they have to contend with 60,000+ rabid fans in Lubbock. Tech will be out for
blood after laying a dud last week and also have redemption on their minds
following last year's embarrassing defeat to the Longhorns.
A play on the OVER is also worth considering when you take
into account both offenses and how productive they've been, but our primary
pick is on the Red Raiders at home. Good luck with your college football picks
