Despite a horrible end to their season, the Red Raiders
earned a berth into the Holiday Bowl. Will they cover against an Arizona State team that pulled out a great season? Let's take a look at the odds.
The Sun Devils are sizable favorites for December 30th's
affair. The college football odds have them favored by as many as 14 points, while the O/U opened at 68.5.
Kickoff is scheduled for 10:15 PM EST at Qualcomm Stadium in
sunny San Diego.
Arizona State Sun Devils
The ending to their regular season wasn't what the Sun
Devils (10-3 SU, 7-6 ATS) would have wanted and now they have to settle for the
Holiday Bowl instead of the coveted Rose Bowl
After losing at Notre Dame by three, Arizona State had put
together an impressive seven-game winning streak that includes statement wins
over UCLA (38-33) and Arizona (58-21). But, the Pac-12 Championship game didn't
go as planned, as the Sun Devils fell to Stanford for the second time this
season, this time by a 44-14 score-line.
Nonetheless, the Sun Devils finished with a respectable 10-3
record (8-1 in the Pac-12) and will therefore represent the conference in the
Taylor Kelly has done a tremendous job in leading the
offense in 2013. The junior threw for 28 touchdowns against 11 interceptions
and ran for eight more scores in a fine overall season.
The big question for the Sun Devils is whether or not Marion
Grice will be able to go. The senior back, who's totaled 20 touchdowns this
year, has been out of action with a leg injury. Should he miss out, D.J. Foster
will try to pick up the slack.
College Football Bowl Picks & Predictions
Texas Tech Red Raiders
Oh how the mighty have fallen.
The Red Raiders (7-5 SU, 5-7 ATS) were undefeated heading
into a road game against Oklahoma back on October 26th. They lost to the
Sooners and then followed that up with defeats to Oklahoma State, Kansas State,
Baylor and Texas.
After starting off so hot, it must have been unbearable for
Kliff Kingsbury to watch his team crumble down the stretch.
Essentially all of the issues came on the defensive side of
the ball. Texas Tech is all the way down at #79 in total defense, having
allowed 419.1 yards per game heading into the bowl. They've been especially
poor (194.3 YPG allowed) against the run.
Offensively, things have been just peachy. The Red Raiders
are averaging a ridiculous 392.0 passing yards per game and have averaged 35.7
points. There's been some drama here lately though with news that Baker
Mayfield will transfer, meaning Davis Webb is likely to start against Arizona
College Football Pick
We first were attracted to a total play, given both team's
propensity to get involved in shootouts, but we actually think the best value
is on Texas Tech in this one.
No one is denying the Red Raiders have looked terrible over
the last couple of months, but this offense is still more than capable of
holding its own, even with Webb under center instead of Mayfield.
This Texas Tech team should be super motivated to end the
season on a high after dropping five straight to close out the regular season.
Not many will give them a shot whatsoever of staying competitive with Arizona
State, but we believe this is too many points to be getting. So, we'll side
with the Red Raiders to cover the spread for our college football pick.
