How can us sports bettors beat the books with our college football picks this weekend? Let's go through the matchups and try and find a few plays we like most, using a parly to help maximize our payout.

Boy are there some amazing games on tap this Saturday

We've got Alabama/Arkansas, USC/Stanford, Michigan State/Notre Dame and Tennessee/Florida headlining the schedule and there's sure to be a healthy amount of betting action going on throughout the day.

Below are a few free college football picks for some games that are catching my eye as we head into the third week of the football season.

Ohio State vs. California

Braxton MillerThe Buckeyes fell just short of the cover last weekend, but I think they make amends to me by beating up on the Golden Eagles.

This California team has struggled in the early stages of the season, losing 31-24 to Nevada in their opener and then giving up 31 points in a win over Southern Utah last weekend.

Ohio State, on the other hand, is looking like a serious contender under Urban Meyer.

Braxton Miller has proven to be unstoppable so far and that's not going to change against the Golden Eagles. Miller is one of the most exciting athletes in the country at the moment and should tear up a Cal D that's allowing 410.5 yards per game so far.

Cal does have some nice talent, starting with future NFL receiver Keenan Allen. However, I just don't see them being able to stop Miller from enforcing his will throughout.

Pick: Ohio State -16.5

Houston vs. UCLA

To me, this is a good situational play. The public is absolutely in love with the Bruins right now after they beat Nebraska last weekend and that may make them a little overvalued.

Houston is in a state of transition, with star quarterback Case Keenum no longer around. The Cougars have lost each of their first two games and that makes them a scary team to back with your college football picks.

However, I've learned not to trust UCLA over the years. It seems like this team plays down to their competition more often than any other “top” program out there.

Plus, the Cougars haven't really skipped a beat offensively without Keenum. David Piland had an insane 580 passing yards and four touchdowns last weekend against Louisiana Tech.

There's no doubt it's been a flawless start to the season for UCLA, but I'd still like to see a little more before I pick them to cover heavy chalk.

Pick: Houston +17.5

Arkansas vs. Alabama

There's a reason why this spread has jumped over five points since the opening college football odds were made public.

The biggest shock of last weekend was Arkansas' loss at home to Louisiana-Monroe. Making matters a million times worse, the Razorbacks now have to deal with the #1 ranked Crimson Tide. This could get ugly fast.

Alabama's made quick work of their first two opponents, beating up Michigan 41-14 on national television and then shutting out Western Kentucky 35-0 last weekend.

A.J. McCarron is growing more and more confident each week, but it most definitely helps when you've got a sick number of incredible athletes backing you up on both sides of the ball.

We found out a lot about these Razorbacks last week. When things got tough, they failed to handle the pressure, even with over 70,000 rabid fans behind them. I can't find a way Arkansas will be able to hang on with a team as mentally strong as Nick Saban's Crimson Tide.

Pick: Alabama -19.5
